After Guilty Verdicts, NBC Fails to ID Jefferson's Party Affiliation

Wednesday's NBC Nightly News devoted a full minute to the guilty convictions for bribery, racketeering and  wire fraud against former nine-term Louisiana Democratic Congressman William Jefferson, but failed to name his political party.

ABC's Charles Gibson mentioned Jefferson's party in a brief World News item. The CBS Evening News didn't air anything about Jefferson's convictions which were announced just under an hour before the 6:30 PM EDT feeds of the newscasts shown in the eastern and central time zones, though Couric did manage to highlight how “Giants quarterback Eli Manning agreed today to a six-year deal for $97 million, making him the highest-paid player ever in the NFL.”

NBC considered the case important enough to send Pete Williams to the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia (just a few blocks from MRC HQ), but he didn't cite Jefferson's party and while anchor Brian Williams set up his colleague by referring to the “case of the cold, hard cash, money that was famously found in the freezer at the home of William Jefferson,” he identified Jefferson only as “a former Congressman from Louisiana.”

Gibson on World News:

Former Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson was convicted late today of charges including bribery and money laundering. His is the case where the FBI found $90,000 of cash in his freezer. Jefferson, a Democrat who once represented parts of New Orleans, was found guilty on 11 of 16 charges. He could face 150 years in prison when sentenced.

From the Wednesday, August 5 NBC Nightly News, transcript provided by the MRC's Brad Wilmouth:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: We are back now with the case of the cold, hard cash, money that was famously found in the freezer at the home of William Jefferson, now a former Congressman from Louisiana. Tonight, there is a verdict in his criminal trial. Our Justice correspondent Pete Williams at federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, tonight. Pete, good evening.

PETE WILLIAMS: Brian, this verdict comes four years after the FBI watched Congressman Jefferson outside a Washington hotel accept a briefcase stuffed with $100,000 in cash. The jury found him guilty of planning to use that money to bribe officials in Africa who are willing to help U.S. companies in which Jefferson’s family had an interest. $90,000 of that money was found in his kitchen in his freezer wrapped in foil packets and hidden in frozen food containers. The jury also found him guilty today of taking bribes from other companies to help them do business in Africa He could face a long prison term. He’ll be sentenced in October, Brian.

PRESSTITUTES

Their perfidy has already been their downfall. Now they are promoting Dem lies that the Teaparties and Townhalls protesters are merely paid shills of the GOP. Then why do Republican pols get booed just as heartily as Dems? The Dems are using Soviet tactics to try to defuse and discredit the protesters BEFORE they gain enough momentum to sweep the Dems from Congress and Obama from office in '12. The Networks and Newspapers have degenerated, willingly, into PRESSTITUTES.

Conventional Wisdom says African-Americans are all Dems.  I don't think the Media can trick anyone into believing Jefferson is anything but....

I honestly have hope Americans, in increasing numbers, are shifting to a common sense embrace of human nature.

I like to believe there's only so much head-patting, condescending patronization an oppressed minority will endure before they start saying "I ain't your damned pet!"

Liberals have a disgusting tendency to expect less than excellence from specific minorities.

All human beings should be encouraged to strive for excellence.  That Liberals promote something far less for specific ethnic monorities is racist and victim-mongering.

So they didn't think it necessary to use his party affiliation.  I guess not, since that would only be necessary for objective reporting, unless they also don't ever use the Republican label. BLAHJAHAHA, yea, that's good one.  Idiots.

ah, Brian...

I remember seeing him in an interview saying that he thought Bush's response to Katrina was slow because the people of New Orleans were black. He had no opinion about the slow response to help say, the white residents of coastal Mississippi.

A month two later, when blacks were attacking non-blacks across the country on Juneteenth, and murdered a Mexican in Austin, TX.... well, Brian sat on that story.

STATE CHANNEL 1...

Funny, I remember that this incident with Jefferson happened in the rescue & recovery phase  after Katrina. If I remember correctly, he redirected several police or National Guard personal to his home to go get the $90,000 that was in the freezer.

I also remember something about at least one of the trucks used in that little stunt getting stuck in the mud in his or a neighbors yard because the lawns were so waterlogged. They had to towed/pulled out before they could do what they were susposed to do.

Every time Ms. Douglass puts out another video urging Americans to report on their neighbors, it will just raise the hair on the backs of Independents and Democrats as well!  It would be such a laughable situation if it wasn't our country they were hellbent on destroying!!

What I laugh about most is their little statement about us being GOP mobs - I haven't related to the national GOP since they threw all conservative fiscal and social values out the window!

I'll bet Howard Dean was having a hard time holding back his rants while they were putting that video together.  As I watched it, I experienced deja vu and could almost see him hollering and hollering and hollering and hollering in Iowa.

Speaking of reporting on neighbors

where are all the people who were wailing and screaming that the Patriot Act was straight out of 1984, Bush was Big Brother, and men in black would descend from black helicopters to abduct you from your home in the dead of night to deprive you of your civil rights?  Where are they now that the government is truly using totalitarian tactics like this to curtail our civil rights, or protesting Obama's proposed Brownshirts--excuse me, "civilian security force"--and fighting the Fairness Doctrine (and all its FCC backdoor tactics)?

Motherbelt, check out USA Today...

They buried this story on page 4A, did not mention one time that "Cold Cash" Jefferson was a Democrat and only put any reference to his party affiliation under his picture.

William Jefferson,
the former Democratic congressman who served the New Orleans area for
nine terms, was found guilty today of 11 of 16 corruption charges.

And even published an editorial about his corruption:

Why not Jeb Bush?

Today's Washington Post....

....actually noted he was a Dem in the second paragaph on the front page.

Normally it takes the Post until at the least the 10th paragraph on an inside page to mention it.

....but Brian Williams was identified as a tool.

no report will mention that...

Jefferson's first and loudest claim was, "they're out to get me because I'm black". Only later did he come up with the idea that he had some sort of congressional immunity from searches.

At least they didn't tag him

At least they didn't tag him a Republican like Fox News did by tagging Sanford a Democrat.

But hey, one point for MSNBC - they got it right this time!

I probably sound like a lot

I probably sound like a lot of people you disagree with, but if you'd prefer to ignore all history whilst making an argument, I'm happy to oblige.  Is it a deal?  From now on, all discussions must exclude anything that's ever happened in the past?

"If we love our country, we should also love our countrymen." Ronald Reagan

You've got me all wrong

I don't want to ignore all history.  I just wanted to poke fun at your pathetic example.

I'm not sure you understand

I'm not sure you understand what pathetic means.

"If we love our country, we should also love our countrymen." Ronald Reagan

then let me explain

There have been so many examples on this site of the MSM leaving off the party affiliation of democrats caught up in scandals that you would have to be an idiot not to realize that it is a deliberate and willful attempt to shield the MSM's party of preference.  The isolated mistake in identification that you cited was pitiful.  Bringing it up makes you look pathetic.  The MSM is shamelessly in the democrat party's hip pocket.  Does that help clear it up?

One isolated incident?

One isolated incident?  Sorry sweetheart, it happens all the time.  Note how they did it with Foley too:

So either Fox is just stupid, or deliberately and continually misguiding their viewers.  You're rhetoric is pathetic.

Eli's Party Affiliation

Did Couric identify Eli Manning as a Republican? If you stereotype him, he is a southern wealthy white male.  Probably well dressed too.

"After Guilty Verdicts, NBC (D) Fails to ID Jefferson's (D) Party Affiliation"

- Relying upon the State Run Media for your information is like relying upon an embezzler to manage your portfolio.

No bias in the state-run media? I feel the monkeys coming!

It is amazing how often we here from the state-run media how not only are they even-handed, but that if anything they tend to tilt to the right.  I would like to know to what right they are referring.  Would that be to the right of Josef or Vladimir?

This is just another fine example of how the media (arm of the Democratic Party) downplays or buries stories when they feel that it is necessary to protect the sterling image of the Democratic party.  They are like a relentless pack of demented hyenas (normal hyenas are equal opportunity carnivores) who will drag down anyone they feel either presents threat or has an "R" after their name.

Eli's coming up with 'giant' headache.

Poor Eli will need that 'huge' contract.

He works in New York and lives in New Jersey. Tim Geithner is probably sending out a hoard of IRS bloodsuckers to join up with the state auditors in checking out Eli's itinerary, plus his phone and travel records, to make sure the federal and state governments gets their 'fair share'.

“Less 1984 — More 1776"

Isn't it surprising,,,

...that Jefferson's conviction was even mentioned? There was nothing about a trial even happening in the SRM that I heard.

See, you blew it SRM. If you didn't mention the conviction, why most of us, wouldn't know or care, because you kept Jefferson out of the news for so long everyone forgot about him. Out of sight, out of mind.

Cut Brian some slack.

Cut Brian some slack.  There is a really good chance that he doesn't even know what party Jefferson belongs to.  He is not the brightest guy.  He probably just reads what is put before him with no thought, no consideration and no care.  He is a true modern professional.

Even my dog knew he was a Democrat. NBC listens to General Electric way too much. Understandable, since they own NBC.                                   Angry Mob!

Bri Bri

Truly amazing, even for nbc, that there was not one mention of party affiliation. Do those in the loyal, state-run media not realize that they bring more attention to the story by omitting the party vs. naming his party affiliation? Just when you think their little credibility cannot sink further.....

We can figure it out

We are so used to the media protecting democrats and dragging Republicans through the mud that we know how to read news articles. We have developed the ability to supply the missing words in articles.

If it's political corruption, we know that it's a democrat. If it's lies or tax cheating, we know it's a democrat.

Jefferson

Jefferson wasn't just any run-of-the-mill democrat. He was the prototypical New South Democrat. Black in a very safe district that would forever be safe, until Katrina intervened. It would even have taken a federal judge to change that. He was the product of Harvard Law. His bio would be impressive if not for sticky fingers. He has been on the forefront of democratic politics in Louisiana for years. Not only is his affiliation relevant, if these "news organizations" were really in that business, they would find enough material to fill several documentaries on the New South. How, in one generation, black political power went from nothing to national influence and the influence of this power and money on many "Jeffersons" at all levels throughout the South would make a fascinating story. That story is not all bad either, there are many honest politicians that have not succumbed to that influence. That is why Jefferson's affiliation is so important. The omission proves they are not interested in honest journalism.
