CBS and NBC Push Obama's Health Agenda, Empathize with His Challenge

The White House's decision to offer interviews with the President to the medical doctors who are correspondents for ABC, CBS and NBC paid off Wednesday night with stories that embraced the assumption health care must be reformed; and interviews on CBS and NBC which put Obama's efforts in the best light. Ironically, ABC's Dr. Tim Johnson, a long-time advocate for government-directed universal coverage, didn't presume Obama's prescription is benign.

Anchor Katie Couric led the CBS Evening News by making the underlining case for Obama's view that government intervention is needed:

They've been talking about it for decades. President Obama says he wants it done now, as in this summer -- universal health care. As he put it today, it's time for us to buck up. And there are a lot of bucks at stake. Since 1999, health insurance premiums have increased 120 percent -- four times as much as wages. And about one and a half million American families lose their homes to foreclosure every year because of sky high medical bills. A number of proposals are making their way through the House and Senate this week.

In the subsequent story, Chip Reid did spend some time on the burden the new health care requirements would place on small businesses, before CBS played an excerpt from Dr. Jon LaPook's Obama interview in which LaPook empathized: “Mr. President, when people hear you talk about a national insurance plan, there are fears of socialized medicine, rationed care, limited choice. How do you handle this?”

NBC's Brian Williams began: “The President tried again today to be heard on the subject of health care. In an interview you're about to hear, he said today the worst thing would be to do nothing at all. Whatever Washington comes up with will affect every one of us, and the newest idea for how to help pay for it all is to get the money from the people who have the money -- the wealthiest Americans.”

Reporter Kelly O'Donnell hailed a “milestone,” asserting: “On Capitol Hill, a milestone: plans from both the House and Senate...”

Dr. Nancy Snyderman pleaded for Obama to press the public to “pony up,” presumably meaning through higher taxes: “What I haven't heard anyone ask is for the American public to pony up, too, that this is going to require some give for all the stakeholders involved.”

She also fretted to Obama: “What I haven't heard anyone ask is for the American public to pony up, too, that this is going to require some give for all the stakeholders involved.” Snyderman used some of her ten minutes with Obama to talk about something other than his policy wishes: “Mr. President, I know you hate this, but is the battle with the cigarettes going okay? I would be remiss as a cancer surgeon not to ask you how you're doing.”

(The MRC's Brad Wilmouth helped collect these transcripts.)

ABC anchor Charles Gibson delivered a less-promotional set up to the coverage:

Good evening. President Obama's sport is basketball, and he is now putting on a full-court press for health care reform. He got a boost today when a key Senate committee passed one version of reform legislation, but the committee vote was 13-10 – 13 Democrats in favor, 10 Republicans against. The President says he wants bipartisan support for reform, but so far, he's not getting it. And now there are even some in his own party expressing skepticism. Jonathan Karl is on Capitol Hill.

The questions posed by Dr. Tim Johnson and aired on World News:

- Charlie, I had 10 minutes with the President, and I began by asking him who would decide what medical care is unnecessary, and therefore should not be paid for?

- The House bill that came out yesterday proposed a so-called health benefits advisory committee – 25 people appointed mostly by you, headed by the surgeon general – who's going to figure out what benefits will get paid for and what won't.

- I then quoted from some doctors who were very worried about increasing coverage without enough primary care in place. One of them said, "I fear that the plan will increase insurance coverage without increasing the ability of primary care physicians to take care of everyone who needs care."

- At this point, the President made a surprising statement about his timetable for solving primary care problems.

BARACK OBAMA: We're not going to solve all of them immediately overnight, and that's why I think we have to anticipate this program's not going to start up probably until 2013. That gives us four or five years to start developing programs to solve this problem.

CBS Evening News. Couric's intro:

Good evening, everyone. But chief White House correspondent Chip Reid tells us there is growing opposition from small business owners who would pick up a big part of the tab.

The questions aired from Dr. Jon LaPook to Obama:

- Do you believe that each individual American should be required to have health insurance?

- Mr. President, when people hear you talk about a national insurance plan, there are fears of socialized medicine, rationed care, limited choice. How do you handle this?

- Let's talk about how you get rid of unnecessary procedures. You've said that if doctors have the right information, they'll do the right thing. And generally, I like to -- I'm a physician, practicing, I like to think that's true. But actually, there are a lot of times when that's not the case. For example, angioplasties, elective angioplasties, when you open up a clogged artery in the heart. It turns out that about 30 percent of them are unnecessary.

BARACK OBAMA: Right Why are they still overdoing them, do you think?

LAPOOK: I think -- because they believe, there's this thing about, if an artery is closed, it's got to be better if it's open, and it turns out that's not true. So how to you make that doctor do the right thing?

Brian Williams at the top of the July 15 NBC Nightly News:

Good evening. The President tried again today to be heard on the subject of health care. In an interview you're about to hear, he said today the worst thing would be to do nothing at all. Whatever Washington comes up with will affect every one of us, and the newest idea for how to help pay for it all is to get the money from the people who have the money – the wealthiest Americans. Our chief medical editor, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, interviewed the President earlier today. She's standing by at the White House. First, Kelly O'Donnell's at the Capitol with a look at where all this stands tonight. Kelly, good evening.

The questions aired from Dr. Nancy Snyderman:

- What I haven't heard anyone ask is for the American public to pony up, too, that this is going to require some give for all the stakeholders involved.

- On the issue of an individual mandate for health insurance, the President said he's been persuaded.

- But how to pay for fixing the nation's health care system. Mr. Obama has repeatedly said he's against any direct tax on people's health care benefits.

- And on managing his own health. Mr. President, I know you hate this, but is the battle with the cigarettes going okay? I would be remiss as a cancer surgeon not to ask you how you're doing.

tired of liberal lies The

tired of liberal lies

The MSM acting like tools for the administration-I'm shocked!!

I think we should start

I think we should start calling them the MOI instead (Ministry of Information). They have obviously found a new mission.

I'm sorry to say, but WE are

I'm sorry to say, but WE are now the Soviet Union 20 years ago.

"And about one and a half

"And about one and a half million American families lose their homes
to foreclosure every year because of sky high medical bills."

Well, since you put it that way, I guess it probably does make sense to completely ruin the entire system for the other 300 million each year who don't.

Not.

But Obama says the worst

But Obama says the worst thing would be to do nothing!! We have to do something!

Why not just help out those people who really need the financial help?  Because, as Rahm Emanual says, you never want to let a crisis go to waste.

the people who have the money – the wealthiest Americans.

but it turns out that small business owners are going to pick up a big part of the tab....

And Nancy Snyderman wants even more than that:

What I haven't heard anyone ask is for the American public to pony
up, too, that this is going to require some give for all the
stakeholders involved.

Gosh, these MOI (Ministry of Information) folks just get all dewy-eyed at the thought of their hero exhorting all Americans to sacrifice for the (sort-of) good of all....

About one and a half million lose their homes...

...because they were given mortgages they never should have had to begin with.

Why don't they take their high medical bills to a richer neighborhood, pick a front door at random and give their medical bill to the person that owns that house to pay, seeing they have more money and are better off and all that.

Or better yet if someone had won the lottery in their town send the winner the med bills, in the spirit of socialism and sharing the pain.

Why don't they take their

off and all that.

Because you have no way of actually forcing him to do that.

If, however, you get the government to go around and forcibly collect money from all your neighbors to give to you, that's OK.  AND they have the wherewithal to make them do it!

Each time I see Katie C. I

Each time I see Katie C. I can't help but notice her increasingly creepy appearance due to all of the plastic surgery. The fact that she is morphing into Kabuki doll in a vain attempt to appear young and is oblivious to the actual results is a giant red flag. I don't think she has a good grip on reality, and it shows.

Re K-K-Katie

I wonder if she has concluded that a woman anchor at See-BS is not going to work so she is trying to look like a man. A tiny, slightly effeminate man however. Or maybe she is trying to look like Chris Matthews?

Parable of the Car that isn't Working

A couple has a car that isn't working and since neither of them are mechanical, they want an expert to 'Fix' the car.

They approach a very confident young man who ensures them he can 'Fix' the car.

He tells them if they will select him, their Car problems will be over, he is very likeable and confident and his words are soothing - they decide he is the one they want and sign a contract to have him 'Fix' the car.

Some time later they ask him how he is doing - he responds 'I won' the contract and you will just have to 'Trust Me'.

They ask 'what is wrong with the car?' - he responds 'I am replacing the muffler system' - they ask - 'is that expensive', he responds 'yes but it is necessary'.

Some time later they ask him 'is the car 'Fixed yet?' - he responds 'I am now replacing the electrical system' - they ask - 'so that is what is wrong with the car?'

He responds 'I have a great deal of experience organizing communities and selling newspaper subscriptions door to door and when you question me it makes me angry'.'

Some time later they ask him 'is the car Fixed Yet?' - he responds 'I am replacing the engine with a really expensive engine, it will save you money in the future and might 'Fix' your problems with the car'.

Some time later they ask him 'We really need our car because we have given you all of our money and are now borrowing money to pay you.'

He responds 'This may take months or even years, you must be patient, after all I didn't break the car someone else did - the broken car was brought to me.'

They respond 'But you asked for the job and we selected you because you said you could 'Fix' it'.

He responds 'I have to go now, no one seems to care about my problems.

I have parties to attend and $100 a pound beef to buy, and my wife needs a $6000 purse and $500 dollar sneakers, your little problems are interfering with my Life'.

BTW he asks 'Can you tell me how to distinguish a Door from a Window on my new home?'

Passive versus Aggressive

"Code named "Aktion T4," the Nazi euthanasia program to eliminate "life unworthy of life" at first focused on newborns and very young children.

Midwives and doctors were required to register children up to age three who showed symptoms of mental retardation, physical deformity, or other symptoms included on a questionnaire from the Reich Health Ministry.

A decision on whether to allow the child to live was then made by three medical experts solely on the basis of the questionnaire, without any examination and without reading any medical records.

The Nazi euthanasia program quickly expanded to include older disabled children and adults.

Hitler's decree of October, 1939, typed on his personal stationery and back dated to Sept. 1, enlarged "the authority of certain physicians to be designated by name in such manner that persons who, according to human judgment, are incurable can, upon a most careful diagnosis of their condition of sickness, be accorded a mercy death."

http://www.historypl... tm

-----------------------------------------------------

Hitler was very popular with the German people and 89.9% voted for him to have more power than any leader in modern history.

The NAZI's (National Socialist German Workers Party) created at least 6 'Death Centers' for these Mercy Killings and were very 'Aggressive', about sending weak, handicapped, elderly and seriously ill people to them.

There are over 5,000 'Life Centers' in America that we call Hospitals.

Barack Obama has indicated that ObamaCare will be very 'Passive', about sending weak, handicapped, elderly and seriously ill people to them.

"Free" Universal Heath Care ? an impossibility

Debating Barack Obama Voters by asking them if they want more 'Free Benefits' or something others will pay for, is akin to asking a Kindergarten class if they want ice cream and candy for lunch or vegetables and a salad.

The children will be very excited and everything will be fine, until the sugar high is expended by running, screaming and yelling and then the low is experienced.

"Free" Universal Heath Care will bring excitement for a period of time until reality sets in.

Costs will soar, taxes will be raised then rationing, curtailing of treatments and diagnostic tests will begin.

Discussions will begin about "life unworthy of life" and the high costs associated with that.

Babies and small children will be considered first.

Should Americans be paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to save a baby that is born premature?

Should mere children receive treatments for diseases and birth defects that cost thousands?

Then discussions will begin about the elderly, "How much should be spent on someone who only has a few years to live, no matter what we do for them?"

Next will be discussions about those who are handicapped, "Do they really have a quality of life that helps society or are they a drain on the resources of society?"

Next will be discussions about those who are horribly damaged in automobile or other accidents, "what will they add to society after many thousands of dollars are spent to repair them?"

"Why should those who are terminally ill, drag society down as well, after all the money spent will only increase their life for a short period and they are already suffering anyway."

This was the thinking behind the NAZI Germany plan "Code named "Aktion T4".

The plan was instituted only 70 years ago by a Socialist Government called (National Socialist German Workers Party) or NAZI.

Why don't CBS and Katie

Why don't CBS and Katie fund the zero liability voter who gladly vote to take other people's money?

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

automatic redundant reflex action

From the meaningless for what it's worth department:  I find that I now automatically skip any article that has in it Katie Couric's picture.  I don't even read the title.  I guess I miss a lot.  She has become so marginalized as a liberal mouthpiece that I no longer see that she has any relevancy.

Is The High Cost Of Health-Care Worth It?

I have heard these two points made many times by the MSM and by politicians. I have always been disturbed by them. It seems to me that we should be grateful that modern-day heath care is available. Modern health-care is a luxury that has never been available to humanity before. It is astonishing that something that has never been available in the past, is now considered an inalienable right by many in the media and in politics.

Since 1999, health insurance premiums have increased 120 percent -- four times as much as wages.

In the past decade, costly medical research, medications, revolutionary equipment and minimally invasive surgical techniques have been developed. New lifesaving treatments and quality-of-life improvements are available today that were not available a decade ago. New diagnostic equipment has been invented and made widely available. It stands to reason, that the cost of the development and implementation of these improvements to our heath-care system need to be paid for. It is a good thing that we are devoting a larger portion of our incomes to lifesaving and quality-of-life improvements due to medical advancements.

And about one and a half million American families lose their homes to foreclosure every year because of sky high medical bills.

Freedom is defined as the ability to make your own choices.  Today we have the freedom to choose life-saving medical diagnoses and treatments that were not available a generation ago. Often these treatments are costly and tough choices must be made. We are free to chose costly medical treatment and the possible forfeiture of our savings and home. We are also free to hold on to our assets and risk the primitive treatments that were available generations ago.  Today we have more health-care choices because many treatments are available today that were not available years ago. Although the cost is higher, we have more freedom to choose today. . In the past, death and/or discomfort was our only option.

IMHO, socialized health-care will reduce our health care options in the future.

Taxing Issue

The most telling statement came from Snyderquack:

"Mr. Obama has repeatedly said he's against any direct tax on people's health care benefits."

So I guess it will be an "indirect" tax then.  This has got to be the biggest swindle ever perpetrated.

"I think that when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."  Barack Obama to "Joe the Plumber"

Changing His Story?

I saw a short clip of the Snyderman interview where Oblahma made this comment,

Obama:  "Well, let me — let me talk about what I think the American people are going to have to do.

First of all, the American people have to recognize that there's no such thing as a free lunch.  Right?  So, we can't just provide care to everybody that has no cost whatsoever, you don't end up having to make any decisions."

What happened to the "not pay one dime more" spiel?

Katie Looking More Masculine

Looks like those male hormones are working out really well for Katie.  Or perhaps it is all that liberal hate permeating through.  Either way she is looking like she could now not only fit in at N.O.W. but perhaps be its spokes'man'.

Winston Churchill ~ "Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy."

Margaret Thatcher ~  "The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money".

It's astonishing how the

It's astonishing how the Old Media, the Congress, and the democrats in general refuse to call Obama's plan what it really is: Obama's National Healthcare RATIONING Bill.

If the bill passes, those who need what the government determines is too expensive medicine, or wait in line a year for critical treatment, or are not the proper recipient for a kidney transplant need to make sure their will is current. The US government has decided that these people should die.

People who would live now with proper treatment, will die under Obama's plan. Simple as that. And the deaths of those allowed to die will haunt those who support Obama's bill forever. If they still have a conscience.

Rationing health care is what occurs in each and every country with national health care--Canada, the UK, South Africa, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Russia etc.  That's the reality.

Say hello to Obama's healthcare world. And goodbye to the great healthcare we now have.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

Sure, you're too old for a new knee

They will cut off stuff for oldsters that aren't in their families, but even more insidious is the comparative effectiveness stuff--basing prescribed treatments on shaky or tiny studies...

Obama's plans on health care and everything else

Forcing legislation through in the middle of the night (cap & rape I mean trade) and ramming this health care program through that will RUIN the standard of care we have in this country.  Let's all just get started with the new B.O. Chant now...  SIEG HEIL......

They give away all of our money & tell US to " buck up"? How about throwing out every last one of these people & start over. Cut their pay. eliminate their healthcare & put them on the same playing field as US. Make them pay taxes. Make them retire with the same benefits that WE have. Make them sell off all of their stocks in the companies that they single out to help. Eliminate their outragous " pay for life" benefits. Make them retire at the age of 65. I say WE show them just who is the boss. Pass a bill that will allow US to fire them if they don't do OUR bidding.

Not universal

Sorry--drifted off for a second. At least the proposals that are being floated (make that passed in five minutes) are not going to cover millions--so this is not universal.

Re not universal

This is a big unreported issue with Obamacare that Keith Hennessey pointed out the other day:

Does the House Really Want to Raise Taxes on Eight Million Uninsured People: http://keithhennessey.com

Keith points out that there is a significant bracket of folks that will get hit with the 'fines' of  2.5% of their income because that amount will be less than what an insurance policy will cost them.

Dr Obama

For example, angioplasties, elective angioplasties, when you open up a clogged artery in the heart. It turns out that about 30 percent of them are unnecessary.

BARACK OBAMA: Right Why are they still overdoing them, do you think?

I honestly did not realize he will personally be second-guessing doctors. Isn't that above his famous pay grade? And might it not be time-consuming? Maybe a Dr Czar?

Obama: The same way the MSM does - after all..

I just couldn't resist making a stab at our president's probable answer....

LaPook empathized: “Mr. President, when people hear you talk about a national insurance plan, there are fears of socialized medicine, rationed care, limited choice. How do you handle this?”

Obama: The same way the MSM does - after all we're all doing this as a team, right?
