NBC's Todd: Palin Will Attract 'Car-Wreck Watchers;' All Call Palin Decision 'Bizarre'

Photo of Brent Baker.

Sarah Palin's “bombshell” holiday announcement that she will resign as Governor of Alaska managed to trump Michael Jackson as the lead on the ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts Friday night as NBC's Chuck Todd predicted she will now make fundraising appearances for GOP candidates where she'll draw in “car-wreck watchers.” CBS reporter Nancy Cordes reflected the tone of the stories when she described “a rambling, at times confusing announcement,” while on all three newscasts Palin's decision was called “bizarre.”

NBC News White House reporter Chuck Todd, who suggested she decided to quit so she could “make a lot of money” on the speaking circuit free of ethics complaint hassles, also predicted she will bring in big crowds at fundraisers for GOP candidates which will also entice those not so impressed by her:
She may spend the next year campaigning for Republicans all across the country. She's probably going to be the person that can attract the largest crowds, some of it is car-wreck watchers -- you know, they just are coming, kind of curiosity-seekers. It doesn't matter. She can attract a lot of people.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Before Todd, NBC reporter Peter Alexander applied the “bizarre” label: “It was just the latest bizarre twist for the self-described maverick...”

ABC and CBS reporters refrained from using that description themselves and left it to others in their July 3 coverage. In the World News story by David Wright, ABC's own Cokie Roberts maintained:

It's mystifying. It was a bizarre statement. It didn't make a lot of sense and it doesn't seem to be the kind of thing someone would do if someone was running for President.
On the CBS Evening News, in the piece from Nancy Cordes, the Politico's Mike Allen, a veteran of Time magazine, declared:
This is very unusual, even bizarre. Governors just don't stop in the middle of their terms when there's no clear reason.
Following Cordes, CBS News political analyst John Dickerson, also a veteran of Time, told fill-in anchor Maggie Rodriguez:
It's bizarre and there's no good explanation. And if she were trying to do away with the kind of speculation that she says has so irritated her, this not the way to do it.

Todd is just jealous that Sarah Palin can get people to listen to her. If NB stopped monitoring that network they would lose half their Neilson rating.

Car Wreck, What do you Call NBC News?

Funny Chuck used the term car-wreck. What else would you call NBC "News"?

Car Wreck!

You can add CBS, ABC, CNN & PMSNBC to that group!

Yep...'bizarre' has been

Yep...'bizarre' has been the talking point word of the day for the msm...nothing new with this tactic....same old-same old...was a bombshell though...no matter how you look at it.

She will raise tons of money, be a great organizer...who knows what's coming down the road, think there will be more coming yet...just glad Jackson is off the news for a bit.

Lot's of time yet politically speaking...going to be interesting.

bt, you've got that

bt, you've got that right.  Bizarre is the nature of the attacks on Palin.  No other politician has been subjected to that kind of scrutiny or personal attack that I can ever remember.  The fact that they couldn't find any dirt made them make stuff up, like non existant ethical violations.

But the really sad part is

Nothing ever stuck, not because she had the help of the judicial system, or friends in high places, no, nothing stuck simply because it wasnt true. If Sarah continues this fight she will be a great contender for us, a great asset.

Bombshell

I am hoping that there isn't some medical crisis, such as a diagnosis of terminal cancer, looming in the Palin family. I could see that as a reason to just hunker down till it has passed. Who knows what brought this on. Time will tell.

Hi BT

Maybe she's going to be a 'car wreck' because the tolerance and compassion crowd keep slashing the tires, putting sugar in the gas tank and cutting the brake lines.

We are losing this war folks the 'tolerant' ones just took another scalp. I have said countless times we are in their sights for total  destruction to pave the way for the socialist state and one party rule. The constant barrage of vindictive, profane slime takes its toll on anyone. being a conservative politician is fast becoming equivalent to being a pedophile. The SCM is the facilitator of these affairs. They are no longer just biased they are active participants in an orchestrated hive mind hate campaign. This competent and decent human being has been the target of a hate campaign from the second she accepted the nomination. The unrelenting unrepentant sliming of this person is a disgrace and shameful in all who participated. Michael Jackson, reviled as a pedophile just a few years ago, is feted in the news (and congress) as some kind of folk hero. Not to mention Al Franken stealing his seat in the senate. The world is turned upside down.

Sarah Palin's

Sarah Palin's “bombshell” holiday announcement that she will resign as Governor of Alaska managed to trump Michael Jackson as the lead on the ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts Friday night........

It's comical.... they are making Sarah into a really big star and they can't help themselves.  They impulsively report what she is doing.  Car-wreck people may show up to see her but might aslo turn into converts after listening to her.  The MSM must remember, she already has a larger following than they do.  And nothing they do to Sarah or any other Republican is going to remove the stench from the corpse that is the obama agenda.

The MSM are the car wreck

The MSM are the car wreck people. Remember OJ's house with two dozen TV stations camped out there and actually reported "how bizarre it was that people were coming by OJ's house". It is the MSM has been bizarre for many decades.

"DumbAssity of Dope"

"...Car-wreck watchers..."

Well, Chuck Todd would know all about car-wrecks and the people who like to watch them...He works for MSNBC, the biggest car-wreck on TV, and it's loyal viewers are it's car-wreck watchers...

But nobody knows car wrecks better than CNN's Rick Sanchez, who likes to get drunk and kill pedestrians.

Cool...That's right...I had...

forgotten about that...Sanchez is such a loser...As far as I'm concerned, the entire MSM is a car-wreck...

Thanks for the reminder...Given what Sanchez said today about Sarah being pregnant again as a reason why she's leaving office, it's relevant.

Now that CNN has fallen into the cellar behind MSNBC (I still can't believe that MSNBC's ratings are higher than CNN's...Who are these people who watch that channel??), they are in major panic mode, and will likely do and say just about anything in an attempt to crawl back in front of MSNBC.

Hat Tip

If the 'out of politics forever' story turns out to be true, let's give a tip of the hat to the far-left, they accomplished their mission. If only Republicans could be as single-minded and vicious in their determination as they are, we might have won the last election. We saw it again in the treatment of David Lecherman just last month; after an apology, Republicans said 'good enough' and moved on. Democratics would not have stopped until Lecherman was fired. Why are we such pushovers? I don't want to be exactly like them, we just need to be a little more ruthless.

Let's use this as incentive to go after the Bamster and his thug administration harder and more relentlessly than ever. The 2010 election primaries are fast approaching and there are lots of RINOs that need to be challenged and lots of democratics that ran disguised as conservatives and need to be thrown out.

Beltway Republicans have proven they care about their own careers and their little friends in DC, just as bad as Democrats.

daydreams

If I got to write the plot for this, the next scene would show her in the passenger seat of a helicopter, rifle with scope in-hand, chasing down the foul-mouthed cretins who incessantly and viciously attacked her and her family for the past 8 months, as if they were Alaska wolves.

If that's the stereotype the PDS Leftists want people to have of her, let them have it....

Go ahead, Sarah -- reload and make another pass.

She will not leave the GOP

She will campaign for Conservative canditates where ever they are and no matter what party.

Palin will not leave the Republican party, she will help rebuild it!

Cacciato, I am merely saying that it is obvious the press will not leave Sarah Palin alone and they have something against her. Even after the election, the press does not want to leave her alone and her court costs might end up being in the millions. I'm not sure she is stepping down to get out of the spotlight.  AT least three options would pretty much require her to free up time.

  • US Senate (unseating former Governor Murkowski's Daughter)
  • Going "on the speaking tour" to ca$h in
  • Running for President

But I don't ubderstand, how

But I don't ubderstand, how could the msm speak to call Palin Bizzare when they are being teabagged by the new god Obama?

It IS bizzare

There are republicans calling this bizarre.

"I am real surprised. It is real unconventional," William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, told FOX News. "It would make sense to finish the governorship and then run for president in 2012."

“There is just no good way to say quitting has made her more qualified to run for higher office,” said veteran GOP pollster Glen Bolger.

“I think Sarah Palin is on the verge of becoming the Miami Vice of American politics: Something a lot of people once thought was cool and then 20 years later look back, shake their heads and just kind of laugh,” quipped Republican media consultant Todd Harris.

Those last two quotes are from Politico. Granted, there are some who think it's a calculated move to be able to raise money free of the ties of Alaska politics - which it will. But, to say this move is not odd is just ignorant.

Tim Pawlenty, the governor in MN and a contender for the GOP presidential nom in 2012. He's not running for reelection in 2010 either... but, he's sure not quitting.

LOL

William Kristol - wasn't he Chief-of-Staff and campaign advisor for Dan Quayle ?  How did Quayle's 1996 primary results go ?

"And from a bunch of loser RINO's as well"  -- Free Stinker

Who WOULD carry a credible opinion of her?

Republican strategist and CNN contributor Ed Rollins said that, to a certain extent, Palin's announcement makes her look "terribly inept."

"I think everyone is shocked by this, and I think to a certain extent everyone is going to assume there's another story. You don't just quit with a year and a half to go. You certainly don't do this as a stepping stone to run for president. You finish the job that you're in, and obviously she's not doing that," he said.

“Palin is at her best when she’s being folksy, but there is no way to be folksy when you’re resigning as governor.” GOP strategist Dan Schnur

“I think she felt too moored to Alaska and she had to get out of there to solidify her national and international credentials,’’ Dick Morris said. “But that opens yourself up to the attack that you’ve only served half your term, two years. What kind of basis is that to think you could be president?

“I think it would have been better to serve out her term – I think it’s better to get that experience under your belt,” Morris said.

Who cared that Obama didn't finish his term in the Senate ?

You're doing a little better there Cur.

Ed Rollins - what has he done lately?

Now Dick Morris, the man is a weasel, but (credit where credit is due) that weasel knows what he's talking about when it comes to politics.  That's the first legitimate quote you've regurgitated.

Meanwhile, who cared that Barrack Obama didn't finish his term in the Senate?

<cue cricket chirping sounds>

Excellent Point

What's he going to run for next?

I hope he fails, too.

King of North America

King of North America probably . . .

Spot on, Free! Not that I can add to what you said, but he

mentioned my current Gov (formerly my state rep).

Tim Pawlenty will not resign because he has nowhere to go unless he runs for senate... in which case he better not go soft like non-stormin' Norman did and lose to some libtard in typical fashion.

'who cared that Barrack

'who cared that Barrack Obama didn't finish his term in the Senate"

There is a bit of a difference.  Obama was elected president.  He didn't QUIT with a year and a half left in his term.

Seriously, if the GOP wants someone to get behind, it's Tim Pawlenty.  He's finishing his term as MN gov and - very likely - will be a contender for the nomination.

I'm not a Dick Morris fan particularly, but he knows his stuff.  Glad I found one you liked :-)

What do these creeps care...they completely ignored the huge crowds that Palin pulled in (like the 60,000 at The Villages) and even the respectable McCain crowds.

When employment's at 15% (or higher) the Soros-ACORN system will still get tens of thousands bussed in from Great Society cities for mass rallies where Dear Leader can pontificate before his styrofoam Greek columns.

When all else fails, simply inflate the numbers---in other words, lie like they do with everything else.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

different

Palin said she was different and she proved it today. That's a good thing.

He has already failed... his country.

What Palin did makes perfect sense...

to me, after she explained her decision.  But then, I am not a Conservative hating Liberal who will put a DNC spin on things.  I noticed too that she put together a very articulate speech with no teleprompters.  How novel in this day and age.  Right now I like Palin and Romney.  I have a bumper sticker on my car that says, Don't blame me, I voted for Palin.  Jim Webster

If so...

If it makes perfect sense, then why does't EVERY governor who's not running for re-election quit with a year and a half to go?

For that matter, why not every president, or any elected official facing lame duck status quit.  That was the only clear reason she gave.

Again, Gov. Tim Pawlenty in MN, another very legit presidential candidate in 2012 (who's not running for reelection in 2010) isn't quitting.

This is't an example of "not politics as usual," it's an example of someone throwing in the towel.  And I doubt anyone on this site would be so supportive of the decision if this has been a democratic governor with presidential aspirations.

ahem,

"Again, Gov. Tim Pawlenty in MN, another very legit presidential
candidate in 2012 (who's not running for reelection in 2010) isn't
quitting."

Wrong.  Tim Pawlenty is going nowhere and has damaged his rep to run for dog catcher.

2 things more 'bizarre'

The coordinated use of the word 'bizarre' to deride this move makes it clear it's on the Libs' talking points.  They're trying to plant it in the people's heads that Palin is not just different from everyone else, she's mentally or emotionally unstable.

Two things are more bizarre here, though:  First, every nutcase commentator on the Left has been foaming at the mouth, calling her names, and trying to push her out of office with repeated, groundless ethics accusations, and now that she's stepping down these same whores are criticizing her for stepping down.

Second, the Leftist news would not cut back on the Michael Jackson smokescreen to devote meaningful time to critical analysis of the economy-killing "cap and trade" scam or the health-care-system-killing "health care reform" bill.  But they'll give MJ a break in order to be critical of Palin for awhile.

They're so scared of her that they're already trying to preempt her possible candidacy in '12.  It's brazen propaganda and collusion....

Kill your TV.

No One Listens!

I'm really surprised at the number of people who completely tuned out Governor Palin's explanation for stepping down.

Chris Wallace, filling in for Bret Baier on Fox News' "Special Report", kept asking Carl Cameron, with earnestness, "But, why?  Why?"  Do you have ears and the ability to comprehend, Chris?  Judas Priest!  Carl Cameron was no better offering up conjecture and forecasting of his own making.  *shaking my head*  Report the news, fellas.  Please.

The DNC Chairman released a statement saying it was Governor Palin's "usual pattern of bizarre behavior."  If that's not setting up the parrots of the party for repeating that phrase, a way of continuing the denigration and degradation, I don't know what is.  Disgusting individual.  Heinous comment.

Mike Huckabee, of all people, said Governor Palin's choice to leave office was "out of the ordinary."  Really Governor Huckabee?  Saving the people millions because Governor Palin has removed herself, and the finances of Alaska from the table of frivolous lawsuits?  I'd say that was courageous and valiant.  The right thing to do.  The wise thing to do.

Governor Palin didn't "quit" her job.  She stood down.

She spent more than a few moments explaining that because of the egregious and nefarious behavior of those that mean to do her, and her family, deliberate harm (emotional, psychological, and financial) it is costing the State of Alaska millions of tax payer dollars.

Millions of Alaskan dollars spent on frivolous and baseless lawsuits and charges being brought against the Governor...  simply because of who she is.  Because they are formally filed, they have to be formally heard - the legal process.  That costs money.  That costs Alaskan's money.

She explained how it has been months since the election and the deliberate and focused personal attacks against Governor Palin and her family have not stopped, nor have they slowed down.

She couldn't justify staying in office, knowing those that oppose her are deliberately targeting her state, through her, for quasi financial ruin.  It costs big bucks to legally prove your innocence when people find the most inane things to cause a legal flap about; logos?  caps?  handshakes?

She's stepping down so Alaska can continue to thrive and succeed, to be the leading State in energy.

Remember the basketball analogy she used?  She's passing the ball so Alaska can win the game.

As the Governor explained, the attacks will not stop.  That could cost Alaska many more millions - for nothing.

Governor Palin is far wiser than her foes.  They can no longer accuse the Governor of Alaska of wrongdoing or ethics violations, but Governor Palin can continue to be a leader; to the people of Alaska and to the people of this Nation that believe in her and share her strengths, convictions, ethics, morals, and vision.

I applaud Governor Palin for seeing through the evil and vindictive minds of those that believed they could use the kill-two-birds-with-one-stone approach of "break Palin's will" and "break Alaska's bank" game.

Didn't work.

Both excellent posts!!

BPB

You have to understand the mindset of the media. They cant understand someone doing something that doesnt advance themselves. It is beyond their comprehension. The DNC well the head communist is worthless as tits on boar hog. His opinion has the same value.

A selfless act

that will not go unrewarded...she will have my vote if she chooses to run in '12

Hold the champagne, SRM

3 years from now what Palin did on Friday will not matter much. What will elect her or whomever the GOP chooses to run for president in ’12 is an overwhelming anti-Obama feeling in this country.

Back in the dark ages before computers existed in homes and there were only 3 channels on the TV if you had a good antenna, this country voted for Reagan over Carter because all of us, liberal and conservative, were so fed up with Carter. We were all so universally fed up with Carter that we would even vote for some guy we hadn’t heard much about except that he starred in a movie with a monkey and hosted the western show Death Valley Days.

I think right now that the country is beginning to feel about Obama the same way we felt about Carter in 1980. This move by Sarah Palin gives her 3 years to raise money if she wants to run for president and get out and spread her message. Run, Sarah, run.

Speak for yourself

there were some of us (I was 14 and learning about Reagan's speeches then) when Goldwater was running. Also, he had that little job called Governor of California where he had fixed some pretty huge messes.  I am sorry to see Palin stepping down, because even though it is Alaska, she has developed more executive experience than Obama ever had when he ran for office.  Now THERE's a guy who ran on being a celebrity.

"What experience and history teach is
this - that people and governments never have learned anything from history,
or acted on principles deduced from it."

G. W. F. Hegel

Yes, but...

Yes, that is true Reagan was Governor of California, but you have to remember those times, The newspapers and Walter Cronkite and Huntley and Brinkley were the gatekeepers of all news. I lived in NYS at the time and we didn’t know much of anything Reagan did as Governor of California, but we knew about the chimp and the TV show, and we all knew we wanted to be rid of Carter.

Today though, with information coming from the internet, and with Obama becoming far worse than Carter at warp speed I think the Republicans could name almost any unknown candidate in 2012 and they will win. I think Sarah Palin if she uses the next 3 years well will be a terrific candidate.

Tribute to the Fallen American Soldier

History will record that the American Soldier and those American Soldiers who have fallen, rank in the greatest humans who have ever lived on this planet.

The American Soldier has set free millions in bondage and defended the freedom of America with willingness of the ultimate sacrifice.

The Fallen American Soldier is someone who walked the hero's path. Someone who walked into the heart of darkness for Duty, Honor and Country.

The American Soldier waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, their families and America, its citizens and freedom.

The American soldier is the fiercest Warrior ever in history, because their mission is the defense of family, neighbors, America and freedom.

The families of the American Soldier, while their faces beamed with pride, their hearts were filled with anxiety and tears as they watched their American Soldier leave to defend them and this Great Country.

Families and neighbors look with horror as the military vehicle stops in front of the home of the American Soldier, to inform them of the ultimate sacrifice of their hero.

No honor can be too great; every tribute is too small for the Fallen American Soldier and their families.

God Bless the American Soldier and their families!

God have mercy on every American Soldier in our History who has made the ultimate Sacrifice in defense of this 'Great Nation' and setting Humans free all over the World.

Palin

I can understand the snarky MSM treating Palin as "irrelevant." What I don't understand is need to destroy!

That's just it putz , unlike McCain ... she truly is a maverick.

Palin still has more executive experience than Obama. And she doesn't need a telepromptor to get the job done!

Here's a funny collection:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-07-03/palin-resignation-10-theories-why/

Or is it simple economics?

If you are paid 125K per year to be Governor, but the endless Dem attack dogs file frivilous ethics charges that cost 500K in the last year, then who in their right mind would stay on this job?
Here in MN, BTW, one StarTribune columnist repeatedly advocates right now for suing Gov Pawlenty now, so this has become a mainstream Dem attack plan against Republicans.
Oddly, when the Repubs were using charges and courts in the fight to keep Schiavo alive, the media was all over the right as "intrusive."   Somehow, frivilously filing charges against Repub Govs isnt viewed that way.
And maybe the media yawning over Letterman's sodomy joke was the last straw....
The story will come out, but a maverick she really is!

Liberals and lawyers

Which explains why liberals are so against any kind of reform involving law suits. Like having the loser of a frivalous lawsuit pay the court costs, etc.

William Shakespeare was right.

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason

Re lawyers

Remember, the Bamster only got where he is by using various legal machinations against his opponents, even those in his own party, to knock them off before the elections started. That's how he won his Illinois State Senate position and his US Senate position. Without the legions of dem lawyers he would still be a community organizer.

All these tactics are textbook democratic machine techniques and they have worked well in Alaska.

Mike Ditka's fault

I blame Mike Ditka for this idiot being elected. Since politics now are a popularity contest, Ditka would've crushed Barry for U.S. Senate and he would've remained a nobody with no hope of a Presidential run.

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason

"Palin still has more

"Palin still has more executive experience than Obama."

-Not by the 2012 election, she won't.  Unlike Palin, Obama will have served a full term in office.

I find it rather funny that

I find it rather funny that when someone throws the MSM a fast ball they start using words like bizarre, unusual, rambling, doesn't make sense.......you have to love them..... bless their little hearts.

Good Point

Well, they are use to getting a heads-up on such things when they involve their allies in government.

"I ask, Sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
George Mason

Well look...

it's pretty well know that Todd isn't very intelligent (shit, just look at this dude), so when Pailin comes out fighting the state run media, idiots like this chump won't know what to do.

Happy Independence Day and God Bless America!

Blast on the Blackberries

Another blast on MSM blackberries.  This time it's just a little more difficult to identify.  The word "bizarre" is a bit more common than the word "gravitas", but can there be much doubt that someone, somewhere is feeding these goofball "journalists" talking points that are being printed and aired?
