In the wake of the revelations about South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, considered a potential 2012 GOP presidential contender, Washington Post editorial writer Jonathan Capehart declared on MSNBC: “Maybe what the Republican Party is going to have to do is skip a generation and wait for the Meghan McCains to come of age so that they can run for office and take over the mantle of the party.” Capehart proceeded to pass along “a little joke” from Post colleague Charles Lane who “said at the rate Republicans are going, the only marriages that will be worth anything are the gay folks getting married in Vermont.”
At about 3:13 PM EDT, anchor Tamron Hall prompted Capehart's comments as she raised the name of the liberal younger McCain in forwarding the view the party must move left: “We've seen a lot of young Republicans, Meghan McCain and some others who've come out and said listen, this party has to modernize. They can no longer turn their backs on gays and tout family values as the way in.”
The June 24 exchange:
TAMRON HALL: We've seen a lot of young Republicans, Meghan McCain and some others who've come out and said listen, this party has to modernize. They can no longer turn their backs on gays and tout family values as the way in. And here again, the family values argument gets a slap in the face by someone who is quoting the bible and asking folks for forgiveness. Does this drive home what some of these young Republicans are talking about, that it needs to be about policy and not what's happening in your private life?JONATHAN CAPEHART: Right. You know, what this now latest revelation shows is that maybe what the Republican Party is going to have to do is skip a generation and wait for the Meghan McCains to come of age so that they can run for office and take over the mantle of the party. You know, a colleague of mine, Chuck Lane, made a little joke just before I came on air. He said at the rate Republicans are going, the only marriages that will be worth anything are the gay folks getting married in Vermont. The Republican Party has a serious, serious problem and right now the only person -- the folks that you listed, David [Shuster] -- who actually has a chance of coming back and making a serious run in 2012 is Bobby Jindal. You can recover from policy mistakes and substance mistakes. You really can't recover from moral mistakes.

June 24, 2009 - 17:21 ET by MozillaAmerica doesn't want a dictatorial regime of Obama or the current leftist drunks. There aren't even Bill Clinton type of Liberals, who were bad, but not nearly as insane. Now they are insane. America won't stand for that. All the GOP has to do is go Conservative and they will win elections. MSNBC is afraid of the truth so they hide things, smear, lie, misguide, and only paint the GOP as bad when the DNC has its skeletons in their closets and so on. Liberals have became Far Left nuts. Where is the liberals who are tolerant? If all you can nominate is people who are intolerant then you have lost America.

Meghan is just another young voice that the news has barely tapped. When you watch these shows, the same politicians and experts and pundits and strategists are interviewed every day, rarely with something new or interesting to say. They wanted Meghan to be another Luke Russert - the child of a respected voice who can add to the father's legacy. Instead they got a wild-child caricature of John McCain.

June 24, 2009 - 15:31 ET by danebramageThey are so steeped in their Marxist assumptions--e.g. the inevitability of "progress" and their victory over that stupid Christ guy--that they never even entertain the possibility that they might be wrong. They truly believe that history, after an inexplicable hiccup of some thirty years, has finally gotten back on track and that they represent the inevitable wave of the future--an unstoppable tsunami that must necessarily overwhelm any attempt to thwart it. That's what underlies all this sophomoric nonsense about Republicans needing to "modernize."
Which will just make it all the more amusing to watch their faces when they get their asses whipped in the coming elections--possibly in 2010, but definitely in 2012.

June 24, 2009 - 20:52 ET by Another Dead KennedyAre you kidding me? The democrats lost the election after Clinton to the most conservative president we've had in decades. Spitzer's seat was passed to the lieutenant governor (no election since), Villaraigosa is still serving his term, and Edwards bowed out of the presidental race (though since '05 a republican has been in his senate seat). So yes, generally when a politician gets caught screwing around, the opposing party wins the next election. Watch for NY. LA mayor will always be a Dem. I'll give you that one.
Are you kidding me?
June 24, 2009 - 22:21 ET by fitzfongAre you kidding me? Decades? The Democrats lost the 2000 election to a moderate Republican (the "Compassionate" Conservative qualifier, the Ted Kennedy education bill and prescription drug entitlement should have given you a clue)...and Reagan had only been out of office for 12 years when Bush took office...not exactly decades. Gore lost in large part because he threw Clinton under the bus after the scandal in a miscalculated attempt to advance his own prospects. When a Governor resigns, the seat usually passes to the Lieutenant Governor...meanwhile, as a resident of New York, I can guarantee you that a Democrat will win the Gubenatorial Election in 2010 (whether that be flavor-of-the-month Andrew Cuomo or a return of the self-named "Sheriff of Wall Street"...that's right Spitzer is testing the waters for a comeback in case you haven't been watching the news). Blagojevich was replaced by a Democrat...who will be replaced by a Democrat. In New Jersey, after McGreevey's shame, they pulled their usual pseudo-parliamentary shenanigans to ensure that a Democrat kept the seat warm for Jon Corzine (another Democrat) to secure election at the next time of asking. Gavin Newsom slept with his campaign manager's wife, and still fancies himself a front-runner for a promotion from Mayor of San Francisco to Governor of California. And you know what? He is the front-runner (if, for no other reason than that it's difficult to see California going back to Governor Moonbeam after 8 years of his incompetence in the late '70s and early '80s). When John Edwards bowed out, did John McCain win the following Presidential Election? Oh, and Villaraigosa won reelection as Mayor of Los Angeles earlier this year...securing enough votes in a multi-candidate race to avoid a one-on-one run-off. But feel free to hang on to your theory against the wind of the facts.

Palin is clearly the most competent conservative candidate out there.
Ask her what government 'programs' she would initiate and you will get those deer in the headlights look because she obviously has none in mind.
These reporters assume that unless someone has Noam Chomsky and Upton Sinclair on their bookshelves, they are stupid, uninformed and anti-intellectual. Ask Sarah Palin what Liberal rags she reads and there will be no ready answer. Ask her what Conservative publications she reads in order for her to remind herself that she's a Conservative-again, crickets chirping.
She has no way of standing up there in front of people articulating what it means to be a Conservative and a Patriot and an American because to her it simply comes naturally...she lives it every day. Might as well ask her why she believes in God.
Also, she has not only the rustic Alaskan frontier thing going on, but also I think a rather Bohemian streak that anyone who's open-minded enough would appreciate. She is not the enemy of free-expression and Liberalism.
