President Obama Rejects Brian Williams' Dig at Bush

In an interview excerpt aired on Tuesday's NBC Nightly News, from the NBC News special, 'Inside the Obama White House,' set to air at 9 PM EDT/PDT tonight (Tuesday) and Wednesday, Brian Williams used President Barack Obama's upcoming speech to Muslims in Cairo to take a dig at former President George Bush, as he contended: “It's a speech that your predecessor perhaps could not have given constitutionally, given who he is, and could not have given because the attack came on his watch.” Obama rejected Williams' premise: “I'm not sure that it's true that President Bush couldn't have given a speech in the Muslim world.”

That interview was conducted earlier Tuesday at the White House after Williams had a long sit-down with Obama on Friday, a session excerpted on Friday's NBC Nightly News which showed Williams cuing up the President to rebuff critics of his Supreme Court nominee. My NB post, “Williams Cues Up Obama to Agree: 'That's One of Those She'd Rather Have Back,'” recounted:

NBC provided a platform Friday for President Obama to fire back at conservative critics of his Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, as Brian Williams cued him up to agree her comment that a Latina judge would make better decisions than a white male one, is “one of those she'd rather have back.” Obama naturally agreed as NBC Nightly News aired his response for an uninterrupted two-plus minutes -- an eternity on TV news.

The Tuesday, June 2 NBC Nightly News aired this exchange:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: You're about to give a speech to the Muslim world, really, the tent pole of this big trip you're embarking on. It's been said it's a speech that your predecessor perhaps could not have given constitutionally, given who he is, and could not have given because the attack came on his watch. Other than your personal style, what has changed to enable you to give this address?

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Well, you know, I'm not sure that it's true that President Bush couldn't have given a speech in the Muslim world. A U.S. President, even where there's a lot of tension in various parts of the world, is always, is always received as a critical figure in world economics and politics, and people want to know what they have to say. So I wouldn't suggest that somehow I'm uniquely positioned to deliver this speech...

The full segment on the newscast which, like on Friday night, showcased one question from Williams and the answer from Obama:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: And back here at the White House, the President's helicopter lifting off from here tonight on the first leg of the most important trip of his presidency thus far. He will mark the D-Day anniversary, among other things, and he will fulfill a promise to make a speech to the Muslim world. The President flies from Washington to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, then on to the speech at Cairo university. He makes two more stops, in Germany and France, for the D-Day events before returning to the U.S. on Sunday. When I spoke to him today, I asked him about the importance of this particular speech.

WILLIAMS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA: You're about to give a speech to the Muslim world, really, the tent pole of this big trip you're embarking on. It's been said it's a speech that your predecessor perhaps could not have given constitutionally, given who he is, and could not have given because the attack came on his watch. Other than your personal style, what has changed to enable you to give this address?

OBAMA: Well, you know, I'm not sure that it's true that President Bush couldn't have given a speech in the Muslim world. A U.S. President, even where there's a lot of tension in various parts of the world, is always, is always received as a critical figure in world economics and politics, and people want to know what they have to say. So I wouldn't suggest that somehow I'm uniquely positioned to deliver this speech.

And I also don't want to, you know, load up too many expectations on this speech. After all, one speech is not going to transform very real policy differences and some very difficult issues surrounding the Middle East and the relationship between Islam and the west. But I am confident that we're in a moment where in Islamic countries, I think there is a recognition that the path of extremism is not actually going to deliver a better life for people. I think there's a recognition that simply being anti-American is not going to solve their problems. The steps we're taking now to leave Iraq takes that issue and defuses it a little bit. And the question then is how do we now go forward with a honest, serious relationship based on mutual respect and mutual interest? And so what I hope will happen as a consequence of this speech is people will have a better sense of how America views its relationship to the broader world and to Islam. I do hope that we can start opening a dialogue that will be more constructive moving forward.

WILLIAMS: A part of our conversation with the President here at the White House earlier today.

President Bush gave speech to Muslims, in Muslim world..

President Bush did deliver a speech to Muslims, while in the Muslim world..

June 30, 2004
Bush urges Muslims to embrace his vision
By Maura Reynolds, Los Angeles Times

ISTANBUL, Turkey — Standing at the literal and metaphorical bridge between Europe and Asia, President Bush made an impassioned appeal to Muslim and European nations yesterday to discard the past and embrace his vision of a democratic and pluralistic Middle East.

Against the backdrop of the Bosporus Bridge, which links the Asian and European sides of this ancient capital, Bush held up Turkey as an example of a secular and democratic Muslim state, one he hopes Iraq and other Middle Eastern nations will emulate...

[..]

In the 27-minute speech, Bush apologized to Muslims for Americans who "speak in an ill-informed and insulting manner about the Muslim faith." Then citing the common origins of Christianity, Islam and Judaism, Bush warned of the danger of those who "incite hatred and murder with conspiracy theories and propaganda," and appealed in return for more tolerance and respect from the Muslim world.

"Whatever our cultural differences may be, there should be respect and peace in the House of Abraham," Bush said.

President Bush also in numerous speeches, including addresses to the United Nations, spoke directly to the Muslim world - and he did it in terms that not even a God-like figure, in the media's eyes,
like Obama can express in a more sincere and meaningful manner.

It's nice that Obama dissed Brian Williams, but he should have set the record straight for the agenda driven Williams.

To be fair...

Gary, to be fair, Obama may not have remembered that Bush gave that speech.  But I'm still stunned that he rebuffed a cheap shot at Bush by Williams.  He easily could have let that pass.  The president deserves a little credit for doing the right thing.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Be realistic...

"...But I'm still stunned that he rebuffed a cheap shot at Bush by Williams."

I'm a bit more cynical; politicians like Obama don't do things like this unless they stand to gain something.  I mean, unless they are stupid.  Hmmm...well, uh...

I don't give anybody credit for "doing the right thing" unless they do it consistently, reflexively, and with no expection of payment or a political quid pro quo.  Doing the right thing for the right reason is a manifestation of a solid moral, ethical, and spiritual base that I believe is sadly lacking in our president.  But then, who am I to judge him, being a person who doesn't always do the right thing myself?  But I try.  To quote a song, 'I'm just a sinner, saved by grace."  As scripture says, there is none righteous...no, not one.

However, if his lordship wants to "do the right thing," how about visiting the bedside of the wounded soldier, and the family of the dead soldier assaulted by a Muslim terrorist today...maybe pin the Purple Heart Medal on them?

Chief, Tally another

Chief,

Tally another cynical vote from me. When Obama took the high road, I immediately thought….. White House internal polling must show the public is tiring of the gratuitous shots at the expense of President Bush.

When a politician develops a reputation for throwing people under the bus, what are we supposed to think when we see a glimmer of decency?

While Bush was no star

While Bush was no star orator, Obama's no great shakes either without his teleprompter.

Often, when Obama speaks sans teleprompter the things he says and does - down to the gaffes and Freudian slips - are the genuine Obama.

I think this was a moment, albeit brief and fleeting, of Obama actually being honest.  On another day, with advanced notice or this experience, Obama might not be as kind.

He could have let this pass.  He could have taken a cheap shot at Bush.

He didn't.

Kudos to Obama.

here's a little bit... bit... bit.

But I hear you. The question is, did Brian Williams hear anything?

I'm cynical too, but have a different take.  I think Obama was criticizing Bush for not giving a speech even though he could have.

Great post

Facts be damned when a member of the MSM wants to engage in revisionist history and continue the "blame Bush" meme.

BrentBaker & Commenter Gary....

Great job, both of you deserve major kudos.  What the hell's wrong with the incompetents at NBC (& CBS, ABC,CNN).  Their BushDerangementSyndrome never quiets down, never stops the pummeling of Bush's tenure, and never starts being historically accurate as Gary so perfectly demonstrated.  These A$$Clowns at NBC are pathetic.  But let's be real here.  The combined A$$e$ at NBC,CBS, ABC, CNN, NYT, WaPo and LATimes, are fiddling while Obama burns the country.  They are complicit b/c they're ignoring the fiscal disasters this President is causing, without even putting stories on the news how devastating this recession is hitting us, and how EVERY policy Obama's done and wants, are the OPPOSITE of what our Capitalism needs.  We can't even be freaking Norway, b/c they drill the living daylights out of their land and waters (as they should) to keep their welfare state chugging along.  Our Dems are even too dim-witted to permit that, when that would be the only way their entitlement state increases  could be paid for.  We are TOAST, and the MSM's complicit in the crime against our economy by these Democrats.

I second these kudos

Gary, I simply find it amazing how quickly you can come up with info sometimes. Kinda nice to see Obama refuse the bait for once.

hey, general c..

Well, thanks for the compliment.. but seriously now.. it's not that difficult. I'm reading this excellent post by Brent Baker. The first thing in my mind is... Pres. Bush, contrary to the MSM projected smear, is solidly on record on this issue. I know that. I paid attention as history was made. Finding a bit here or there is relatively easy. It would be a lot easier, mind you, if the MSM had been widely interested, at the time, of informing the American people of what the news was. They were not - just the same, bits popped up from time to time.

Bottom line here - it's no surprise that Brian Williams, famous powerful national network anchor and all, never noticed. His interest was only in promoting his agenda. Still is.

Well I for one

Am here because of poster like you and others. NB puts the liberal media in context like nobody else. I honestly think there should be a show or even a station dedicated to setting the recored straight. Maybe we should lobby for a PBS segment? : ]

What the heck, if Mr. Bush couldn't

"Brian Williams used President Barack Obama's upcoming speech to Muslims
in Cairo to take a dig at former President George Bush, as he
contended: “It's a speech that your predecessor perhaps could not have given constitutionally"

If Mr. Bush couldn't do this constitutionally, How in the world can Mr. Obama?

 Jack Van Nostrand

What Speech?

Williams is talking like the speech is a done deal, -it's not. We don't know how the speech will be received yet, or what he will say. In the arab world, they do not respect groveling and appeasement. If that's what the Bamster has in mind his speech will not be seen as a great success except of course by the mewling US media.

In going to Egypt, I hope that he is not doing anything reckless that will place himself in danger. I can't stand the man, but I want him safe. Egypt is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for Americans.

Egypt dangerous for Americans

And Egyptians, too.

RIP President Anwar Sadat, 1981.

I took it differently.

I took it differently.  More of an obliquely delivered assumption that though he could, President Bush would not be expected to address Islam-I could infer that Obama truly does not believe that GWB could say anything positive as a huge plank of his campaign's platform was how Bush had managed to piss off everybody in the whole wide world.

As pointed out above, Obama is either ignorant that GWB actually did speak directly to the Muslim world, or doesn't want to point that out in his (Bush's) favor.

So he is truly ignorant of what the U.S. President just before him did or didn't do, which is bad, or he won't acknowledge it, which is worse.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

tired of liberal lies I

tired of liberal lies

I used to watch Brian Williams but since he has lost all journalistic integrity and took up kool-aide drinking I stopped watching all the MSM.  I honestly believe that the KNOW they're going the way of the dinosaurs and that they don't care anymore and just want to use their platforms for the time left to promote Obama and their socialist agenda.  And if I see one more story how great the economy is doing because the economic numbers are just bad but not a "bad as projected" I'll scream.

"And I also don't want to,

"And I also don't want to, you know, load up too many expectations on this speech."

You sure wouldn't know it by how he acts like he's the greatest thing ever to live amongst civilization.  What an arrogant ass Obama is.
