USA Today's Neuharth Blames Iraq for Economic Downturn

Photo of Brent Baker.

The current “money mess” is “primarily because we've spent or authorized more money on the Iraq war (its sixth anniversary is next Thursday) than we're putting into the stimulus program,” USA Today founder Al Neuharth contended in his weekly “Plain Talk” column on Friday. While “many Democrats as well as nearly all Republicans in Congress gave Bush” the authority to go to war in Iraq, “by contrast, the votes on President Obama's recovery or stimulus plan to clean up the mess that Congress helped create with the Iraq misadventure” were not so bi-partisan.

After citing how 246 Democrats House Democrats, but zero Republicans, and 56 Democratic Senators, but only three Republicans, voted for the “stimulus” package, Neuharth scolded Republicans: “Both parties got us into this mess, but only one is trying to get us out of it.”

The Heritage Foundation's James Carafano, in one of two “other views on Iraq and stimulus” printed below Neuharth's column, corrected Neuharth's finger-pointing:

We averaged 8% of our GDP on defense over a decades-long Cold War and never faced an economic downturn like this. Today all defense spending, including Iraq, is only 4% of GDP. Blaming the Pentagon for the recession is just bad math.

In the second “other view” far-left Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio agreed with Neuharth's assessment.

An excerpt from “Money mess created by six years of Iraq,” Neuharth's column in the Friday, March 13 USA Today:

Much is being written and said about the new stimulus law (officially the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009). Not enough of us explain or realize why we're in this money mess.

It's primarily because we've spent or authorized more money on the Iraq war (its sixth anniversary is next Thursday) than we're putting into the stimulus program. Comparison:

- The Iraq war $864 billion.

- The stimulus program $787 billion.

Sure, greedy bankers, covetous Wall Streeters, irresponsible buyers of homes and cars they couldn't afford all contributed to this recession. But if we hadn't blown that huge bundle in Iraq, we could have handled our problems here at home more easily....

Many Democrats as well as nearly all Republicans in Congress gave Bush that blank check. Votes on the Iraq resolution:

- House of Representatives: Yes, 215 Republicans, 81 Democrats.

- Senate: Yes, 48 Republicans, 29 Democrats.

By contrast, the votes on President Obama's recovery or stimulus plan to clean up the mess that Congress helped create with the Iraq misadventure:

- House: 246 Democrats, 0 Republicans.

- Senate: 56 Democrats, 3 Republicans.

Both parties got us into this mess, but only one is trying to get us out of it. As a political independent, I understand that. No matter your party affiliation or inclination, you should, too.

iraq and the gwot are major factors

by a tremendous devaluation of the us dollar.  but to say that only one party is trying to fix things isn't going to solve anything.  come on.

swing hard in case you hit it.

Actually, wasteful social

Actually, wasteful social spending is the big cause of the devaluation of the dollar.  It is naturally inflationary, because there is no return.

We have poured trillions into the "war on poverty", with no results.

The "stimulus package" is just more wasteful social spending.

government spending and borrowing

that's what is devaluing the currency.  it really doesn't matter on where the spending is directed.  social spending and entitlements or military are both big ticket items.

National defense is a

National defense is a Constitutional expense of govt; social spending is not.  Big difference.  Besides, the numbers prove you wrong.

I always hear lefties

I always hear lefties squealing about "war profiteering", so I wonder why they now think war is not profitable.  Which is it?  Were they lying then, or are they lying now?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Robert

the answer to your questions, on lying, are both yes.  They lied then, they lie now.  And they'll lie in the future.

When you consider

Democrats won the election by convincing ignorant people to be idiot voters, by promising them lots of other people's stuff for free -- why not give this a whirl.

My neighbor, who watches nothing but CNN, said something similar to me last week ...

Another disciple of the church of false alternatives

Once again, they present a choice of going along with the bloated, wasteful, politically-motivated, crony-rewarding plan, or you're just not trying to get us out of it.

He's a political independent, so he says, but he can only think like a Democrat. Well then, what's the difference?

KC, you have to remember:

KC, you have to remember: It doesn't matter if they fail spectacularly.

At least they tried!!!

What's your point, Al? That the Democrats voted for something they didn't believe in back then, so Republicans should do that now?

And by all means, Al, please explain how the Iraq "mess" caused banks to fail and thousands of Americans to buy houses they couldn't afford, and American carmakers' sales to tank.....we're listening....

These Communists are always

These Communists are always going on and on about the "military-industrial complex" and how the Conservatives like war because it's good for business.  But this war apparently wasn't good for business?

BTW, I know it was Eisenhower who coined the term 'military-industrial complex'.  Personally, I think he was pretty limp as SHAEF commander...should have let Patton loose a lot earlier against the Germans and later against the Russians, thus saving millions of lives because of the violence and oppression of the Communist Bloc.

But, it's hard to argue with success...no matter how many GIs were needlessly sacrificed I suppose.

Ancient Al

I guess Neuharth should know his politics; he's only been in the news business covering it since the Teddy Roosevelt administration...

THis is of course

THis is of course NONSENSE.

The US defense outlay now WITH the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan makes up signicantly less of the percentage of the budget as Defense made in 1938 when we were unprepared for war.

THe army is significantly smaller, the Airforce about the same size and the Navy is smaller now than in the pre-WWII era.

What has grown since then?  Social programs which have EXPLODED!

Facts on the stimulus vs. Iraq

The Congressional Research Service (October, 2008) reports spending on the war on terror as:

This $864 billion total covers all war-related appropriations from FY2001 through part of FY2009 in supplementals, regular appropriations, and continuing resolutions. Of that total, CRS estimates that Iraq will receive about $657 billion (76%), OEF about $173 billion (20%), and enhanced base security about $28 billion (3%), with about $5 billion that CRS cannot allocate (1%).

You can read any newspaper to date and find that the current stimulus amounts are about $2 trillion including bank bailouts, the stimulus bill, etc.

This all proves that there are old fools, there d**n fools, and that there is Al Neuharth.  Al, when you can put some facts behind your rants other than PROJECTED spending including interest and obama's future spending, come on back.

FYI, Al, your economics also sucks.  Both spending groups are bad; however, Iraq had some possibility of preventing ANOTHER 9/11, while your "Stimulus" bill throws money away at projects which should not be done and in many cases allow bad decisions to continue.

One bad example of spending:  BO "saved" 25 cop jobs in Columbus, OH.  For how long?  When the stimulus spending is gone, the doofus mayor will cut these jobs again rather than cut things like live-in partner benefits and other parts of his bloated budget.  The spending in Columbus, Ohio has been out of control since the
Democrats took over the whole City Council and Mayor's office about 8
years ago.

All of the city and state bailouts are exactly like this.  Only die-hard socialists like you won't admit that the federal government should not be propping up loser states like California.

Thank God that the Republicans finally got some stones to not spend like drunken sailors on economic stimulus.

In the CBO

In the CBO Director's letter to Senator Gregg, Senator Grassley, and Congressman Camp on February 11, 2009, regarding the stimulus legislation, he says:

[...]

In principle, the legislation’s long-run impact on output also would depend on whether it permanently changed incentives to work or save. However, according to CBO’s estimates, the legislation would not have any significant permanent effects on those incentives.

Neuharth writes:

Both parties got us into this mess, but only one is trying to get us out of it.

Unfortunately, the party Neuharth thinks is the only one that is trying to get us out of this mess, is the party that didn't put incentives to work or save in the stimulus bill they wrote.

Dear Al,

you're irrelevant.  And your paper is nothing but fishwrap, or maybe bird cage liner.  As has been demonstrated by everyone upthread, you have no grasp of economics, world events, or common sense.  So, just go back to giving the Obamunist his daily tongue bath, like you do now, and STFU....

UN... I heartily Second

UN...

I heartily Second that!

Neuharth scolded

Neuharth scolded Republicans: “Both parties got us into this mess, but only one is trying to get us out of it.”

He could have very easily continued with........."and only one party has ever wanted America to win it, with the other only wanting loss completely carefree of consequences."

Neuharth is lying

Neuharth scolded Republicans: “Both parties got us into this mess, but only one is trying to get us out of it.”

Curious that USA Today's Neuharth fails to mention that Republican Eric Cantor (Minorty Whip) and the Congressional GOP presented to Obama an alternative stimulus plan on Obama's THIRD DAY in office, to which President TelePrompter replied: "I WON, SO I TRUMP YOU".

Republicans presented a plan, and Pelosi shut them out then stated "YES, WE WROTE THE BILL, YES WE WON THE ELECTION"

Oh, and check this out: Beginning tommorrow:

...officials throughout the (Democrat) party plan to hammer the idea that Republicans are just saying “no” to the president’s budget plans without offering their own alternative.

Others involved in the planning included White House senior adviser David Axelrod; the DNC chairman, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine; and DNC Executive Director Jennifer O'Malley Dillon.

The plan follows the private complaints of some Democrats that Obama let the GOP get the better of him during the debate over pork in the budget bill he just signed, and growing concerns among some Democrats that charges of big spending could stick to the president. .... (via hotair/ politico)

Wow. The Democrats are in perpeptual campaign attack mode. Its no wonder that President TelePrompter hasn't filled the critical staff at Treasury.

Neuharth is as worthless as

Neuharth is as worthless as his newspaper is.

Does this idiot not realize that since this dumb assed empty suit has been in power we have spent MORE THAN ONE BILLION DOLLARS AN HOUR!!!

WE COULD HAVE GIVEN EVERYONE IN THIS COUNTRY OVER 18 THAT VOTED ONE MILLION DOLLARS EACH AND STILL HAVE COME OUT AHEAD!!

IT'S IDIOT'S LIKE HIM THAT NEED TO JUST SHUT-UP AND GET OUT OF THE WAY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE OR HE WILL GET RUN OVER.  ONE BILLION DOLLARS AN HOUR PEOPLE!!!  ONE BILLION DOLLARS AN HOUR AND THEY HIRED 25 NEW POLICE OFFICERS!!! THAT'S IT, THAT'S ALL WE GET FOR OVER A TRILLION DOLLARS OF OUR MONEY!!

How close is USA Today to going out of business?  Close I hope.

REXY...

Neuharth & his paper might be worthless, but at least they will give you a nice multi colored pie-chart to look at when looking at an issue that you found left at a fast food place when stopping in for a quick bite to eat on the run.

As for the cause, I'm locked in on those in the banking & finance commitees on Capital Hill, as well as Wall Street & over the top spending by Congress with Persidential vetos all seem the problem as I see it. Iraq & the War On Terror have nothing to do with it.

Watch and listen...

When I watch and listen to old fools like this I no longer wonder why teachers are banging the students and grown men, and women, are raping new born babies. If you collected all the brains in the democrat party and inplanted them in a Hummingbird it would try to fly upside down on one wing. Too much rattling noise inside the skull, like a BB in the hull of an aircraft carrier.

Oh Scrap... I could hug

Oh Scrap...

I could hug you!

What a succinct post.

LOL Scrap. But in a way

LOL Scrap.

But in a way that idiot has made a half true comment. One party got us into this mess, the democraps because they created the GSEs, they created the devastating policies on lending that had to be used by lenders at the threat of regulatory actions, they created the poisonous bundling and purchases of mortgages and they threatened to filibuster oversight and reform playing the race and class warfare cards against all attempts by republicans to place the system on sound footing. He is also right that only One party is offering ideas to get us out of the mess instead of deeper into the mess, and that party is the Republican Party.

I know comments like this

I know comments like this need to be noted in the battle against bias, but is there really any reason to even debate the details of the rantings of a what, 150 year old man who gets more and more out there the older he gets? Just post the comment next to his picture and that's should be enough - and I'm only sort of kidding.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

Idiot Al

This idiot bloviates and wants to lay the blame for the country's financial mess on our efforts in Iraq then will sit there and rake in the profits from all of the subscriptions to Army, Navy and Air Force Times by the soldiers out there in harms way reading his fish wrap.

For those that don't know all of the Military Times publications are put out by Gannett News Services.

They are NOT our friend.

"I May Be Changed By War, But I Will Not Be Defeated By It" - Audie Murphy

Neuharth's nonsense

Our military budget accounts for about 5% of GDP. Spending on Iraq amounts to about 15% of that 5%. Obviously, this mess was caused by factors other than Iraq.
