Artists frequently describe their purpose as "provoking" social conversation. But we have a glut of artists, who reject the mundane life of real jobs, trying to be provocative. To stand out (and attract payment), certain aspiring artists simply cross the line of reality. They toss off wild ideas just to be provocative, and don't grasp that in so doing, they make it impossible for the ensuing social conversation to be rational.

• If art has no connection to reality, it's simply playtime. It's just children playing make-believe for the sake of playing.
• When playtime is over, and these people must return to reality, they face a crisis. When their imaginations can't let go of their "provocative" ideas, it becomes a neurosis.

It's a shame. I saw this Sunjata guy in the Kevin Kline version of "Cyrano." and I thought he was pretty good. Too bad he's kind of a nutcase.

This nation has become too stoopid to survive in its present form, which is why I believe it was possible for both the US House and Senate to vote to essentially kill it yesterday, and most government-schooled Americans are utterly oblivious to that sad fact.

Leary has gone on record saying that he hates the 9/11 Truth movement.  Glenn Beck interviewed him a couple of years ago, and the subject came up.  Leary took the opportunity to give the Truthers a piece of his mind.

 I doubt this episode will be sympathetic towards Truthers.  If it is, Leary was probably not involved in the writing process.

There is NO intelligence or sanity requirement to be an actor.
I have some respect for actor Keanu Reeves. When he had cameras shoved in his face asking about popular issues, he replied "....hey I'm an actor...." not a scientist or political expert, go ask someone else who is. I believe he said this in approx' the 1996-2000 time frame.
It was refreshing to hear.

As for rosie & these other boneheads I can't believe it when they say somethink such as "... I don't need to read or watch [insert conservative name] new book [or show] to know what that jerk is all about..." They're experts in IGNORANCE. Any person with half a brain wants to hear both sides before passing judgement. Our legal system is based on this idea.

And, of course, George W. Bush concocted and then allowed 9/11 to happen, right? Sorry, left out the other two princes of darkness: Karl Rove and Dick Cheney and their assistant then, Rumsfeld.

Denis Leary is hilarious. And up till now Rescue Me has been on my must watch list.

So when I read of a 9/11 Liars Season 5 storyline my heart sank faster than Tax Cheat Daschle's confirmation.

But here's the thing. If Rescue Me remained true to its characters and their "arc," as developed so far, this element of the Franco character would have been hinted at, if not revealed, in the past four seasons starting in 2004.

But Franco didn't wake up one morning in Seasons 1-4 and decide he was a nut.

Franco was well established as a supreme narcissist, and a womanizing heartless dick, in Seasons 1 through 3. He is without a serious thought in his head.

A DIMWIT, albeit marginally smarter than the other certified moron, the Probie, who suddenly decides he's gay. Or not. And all hilariously written by Leary and Peter Tolan (a writer I've admired for The Larry Sanders Show, Analyze This, et al.)

Franco has never made any mention of 9/11 conspiracies at all. Which is a bit weird as the whole premise of the show is founded on the devastating effects 9/11 had on the individual firefighter. You would think it would come up.

Okay, oaky -- this is fiction here. An alternate universe which incorporates real events into made-up people. So let's just accept that a successful drama needs actual DRAMA to drive the show, else it would be a boring one hour; and allow the dick Franco his sudden conversion to nutjob.

What would be the truthful reaction of an established character like TOMMY GALVIN ?

I suggest that the Tommy character, as brilliantly developed by Leary, would DECK HIM -- and kick his ass straight out of the Ladder; and/or the Fire Department totally.

So if they follow through the Story Arc with honesty, then I'll continue watching. But if it's just a sop to an actor who's clearly gotten more than his fair share of mental problems, then screw RESCUE ME. Sorry Denis, you will have lost a big fan in that case.
