Bill Press: 'Fairness Doctrine' Will Remedy 'Conservative Media Conspiracy'

Bitter over the decision, by the owner of the Washington, DC area radio station which carried his show and other left-wing hosts, to drop its liberal talk show format which didn't garner enough listeners to even show up in the latest ratings, Bill Press charged in a Sunday Washington Post op-ed: 

There is no free market in talk radio today, only an exclusive, tightly held, conservative media conspiracy. The few holders of broadcast licenses have made it clear they will not, on their own, serve the general public. Maybe it's time to bring back the Fairness Doctrine -- and bring competition back to talk radio in Washington and elsewhere.

In the February 8 piece, “Another Right-Wing Conspiracy in Washington?”, Press lamented that while the owner of WWRC, dubbed “Obama 1260" by owner Red Zebra, “will add Ed Schultz to its conservative lineup on 570 AM,” he'll be “outgunned in this market by at least 15 conservative talkers.”

He proceeded to list them without, however, acknowledging that the DC market has a far-left Pacifica station as well as two stations which air NPR talk shows: “Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, Chris Plante, Michael Smerconish, Michael Savage, Andy Parks, Fred Grandy, Bill Bennett, Monica Crowley, Bill O'Reilly, Dennis Miller and Lars Larsen. No matter how good Schultz is, that's not a fair contest -- nor a fair use of the public airwaves.”

But many of those conservative hosts are hardly pulling in great ratings in the DC market either, though more listeners than the station which aired Press, so maybe DC just isn't a very good market for talk radio and thus switching to a low-cost financial news format, as WWRC will do on Monday, makes business sense. Last Monday, on his DCRTV.com blog, Dave Hughes noted:

The last PPM numbers it had when it ranked showed WWRC in 35th place full-day, age 12+. Red Zebra's co-owned righty talker, WTNT, while it may have seen its ratings rise a bit of late, still ranked 32nd overall in the latest ratings round-up. WTNT's Bill Bennett morning show was its highest-rated at 25th place. Even at the market's dominant righty radio talker, Citadel's WMAL, things are not good. It placed 16th in the latest PPMs, with middayer Rush Limbaugh in 12th.

Bill Press laments after his firing. Well, we got that out of the way ...

If the "progressive" radio stations were prevented from airing, that would be one thing. However, if they air and no one listens, that's what competition is all about. Again, this is the difference between equality of opportunity versus equality of outcomes. The opportunity is the same, but the outcome isn't - and liberals use that as evidence of inequality. No, it's equal in opportunity. That's all that counts.

Why does conservative radio

Why does conservative radio thrive? Because they listen to BOTH SIDES of an argument. Medved, Rush, Hannity...all of them say "this is myopinion, if you disagree with me then I would like to hear from you, give us a call".Then when some libtard calls in, they dismantle them with logic.

Lib radio does not do that. They can't do that because they can't defend their positions with logic. They rely on emotion. So all they do is harp for the entire show and ttake calls from morons who agree with them and spout BDS crap.

That's why they fail.  

Talk Radio is conservative

Talk Radio is conservative because it is the medium can that be monitored by the workforce while it is working.  I cannot count the number of offices I have been in the past twenty years that have a communal radio tuned to Talk radio while the folks inside are actually working.

Daytime TV on the other hand is unrelentingly liberal because it is viewed by the non-employed as they sit on their couch.  People with jobs cannot watch TV so that forces that demographic to occur in this manner.

So, if talk radio were forced to change its content, the audience will not change (The employed conservative will listen to radio while the unemployed liberal will still select TV), the listenership will simply dwindle as Conservatives have less reason to tune in.

The Attack

The attack will come from nimrods like Bill Press, Hussein, Reid, Pelosi, Franken - all of the Left.  They can be as relentless as a hemorrhoid on a cross Atlantic flight.

This ''Fairness Doctrine'', the most misnamed idea ever conceived, will be attempted until it is law. The Local Community Radio Act will be instituted as well, if we're not very vocal - marching in the streets vocal. We have seen this past week that a ''100 to 1 Against the Spending Bill'' barrage of callers and emailers aimed at the Senate doesn't mean a darn thing to the Left. Hussein won. Now - that's all that matters.

This will get as much push and play as Algore and his Fantasy Global Doom Scenario.  They will, as Gore screamed, ''play on your fears'' until the Ignorant Masses march in lock step off of the cliff of Freedom.  When they shut down the Freedom of Speech all the rest of the Rights we have had for centuries will fall like dominoes.

Bill, take a moment and read what you wrote.  That the license holders can choose what they will program -  on the stations for which they, not the government, hold licenses - indicates that the free market is alive and well.  It seems to me that the free market in broadcasting ends as soon as the government tells the license holders what they can and cannot broadcast.

You tried competing.  Air America and Obama 1260 failed.  ("I won" sound familiar?)  Try offering programming that is competitive.  There are lots of AM stations out there that don't broadcast Rush et al.  Go sell your liberal pitch to them if you want to get on the public airwaves.

Conservative talk radio has

Conservative talk radio has the numbers of listeners it has because it is about the only source for conservative opinions/views and balanced reporting.

Rush has an audience larger than any of the TV news shows including the much over hyped Meet the Press, which on a good Sunday might get 4 million viewers.

Redefining "free market"

According to Press:  There is no free market in talk radio today, only an exclusive, tightly held, conservative media conspiracy.

My guess is he's trying to define the free market as a smorgasbord of ideas rather than an economic phenomenon where consumers decide winners and losers.

Why would Press do this?  He's lost so many times based on the real free market--this isn't the first time he's lost his job--and nobody listens to him because he never makes a point.  Now he wants his definition of the free market to be enforced by like-minded government.

If you can't beat 'em, have them regulated out of business.

No right minded station owner is going to put the money losing lib talk on after a conservative. They'll either go to music or sports talk. Look at the station in Miami that dropped the losing lib talk and went to sports talk.  

A story at World Net Daily takes another angle. I never thought of this. Will Christian radio have to give equal time to Isalm? With the current way of thinking in DC it will. Can you image listening to David Jeremiah  one hour then an hour of some Muslim trying to contradict everthing he just said. What about the car care show. Will they have to give equal time on how to maintain you camel or ass? Thinking the way the libs think.

To libs it might sound silly about having a show on about home inprovement and then another on how to decorate your cave. That is exactly the way I see it when those nimrods in DC get in charge of it. And they'll probably take it all the way to cable and satelitte. Will they reconize that PBS and NPR are left winged and give consevatives equal time on their stations? I live to far to get 630AM on most radios, but I am well within range of NPR, WTOP LIB NEWS Radio. I never knew that straight news could be slanted in this country until I listened to the simulcast that goes over three DC stations at once. If Bill Press can't make it here, he needs to find a small PBS station in Eastern Montana to hide in.

There was a fellow in England that was trying to expose a government supported group called "Common Purpose".  He claimed that the EU was using it to infiltrate all levels of British government to break the last resistance to the EU SupraState. ( Like a shadow government) He pointed out the emergence of such art as above at the beginning of his speech (almost en passing).  Last year I posted a link in the forum to the speech.   That group is in the US also.  If some of you will recall, the phrase "common purpose" came up quite a bit during the primaries.

Hearings

I can't wait to see Senate hearings in which Limbaugh and Savage are grilled by Stabenow and Reid. I will stay home from work to watch that for the sheer entertainment value. My God, these Senators will be destroyed in any debate with these talkers. The Senators may well have their underlings conduct the questioning just to avoid the public embarassment. The public would see first just how stupid their "leaders" really are.

Having grown up in the LA

Having grown up in the LA area, I had the misfortune of knowing Bill Press quite well.  I don't know if I've ever seen someone more proud of his ignorance than Bill Press is.  One could argue that some liberals are talented broadcasters (Keith Olbermann and Stephanie Miller certainly have their moments), but Bill Press is as boring as he is obnoxious.  He's also neck deep in corruption.

I have always been a student of History.  I always wondered how the German people of the 1920s and 1930s could have allowed a Nazi/Socialist regime to take over and ruin/destory Europe and their own country and lives.

Kingfish: The young adults in our country are, for the most part, ignorant of history. In addition, they have been fortunate to live in an America where they have only known freedom and prosperity. I'm not saying that we should go back in time. But that today's young adults are the products of the privilege that comes from all that has been available to them. The responsibility for everything bad that happens must be foisted on someone else. And any apparent flaw which mars their utopian sense of privilege is considered dangerous ideology. You are correct. The whole process can be easy when the minds of the people have already been primed.

AM RADIO WILL BE HISTORY

The Fairness Doctrine is on its way and AM radio will be on its way out the door.

Obama's mission: To destroy any ounce of opposition to his plans to destroy America once and for all.

Worried: I'm planning to mount a campaign to encourage conservative talkers to start raising funds for a legal challenge. I personally don't believe that marching on Washington would accomplish much. Heck, the drive-by media certainly wouldn't give it any air time.

I can't site sources at this time, but that type of grass roots planning and action is already taking place. People are preparing for hearings, and top attorneys have pledged to be on board. There will be a stinking mess if the liberals try pushing the Fairness Doctrine, and it will be made clear that the Doctrine is an indefensible attack on the First Amendment.

I don't expect that here.  The left in this country seem to want to push everyone into the cities.  Think Bulgaria, not Cambodia.

 

Left-wing talk radio

Everyone seems to ignore the fact that the left already has radio programming that is broadcast nationwide - it is called NPR, National Public Radio, which we all have to pay for.  What they also want and obviously think they somehow deserve is private, commercially profitable radio programming, which apparently is impossible because no one wants to listen to them.  Any government meddling to promote some illusory standard of fairness will only result in profitable enterprises become commerically unviable.

If Little Billy is aware of conservative media's dominating talk radio, then How the Hell can it be a "conspiracy"?

Conspiracy:

1. a secret plan to carry out an illegal or harmful act
2. the act of making such plans

Best I know, there was never a secret plan to start conservative talk radio, and it's not an illegal act either. Yet.

However, Chairman Obama may "Change" that too, before Jan. 20, 2013 arrives.

Let talk radio live by the free market

Will a Fairness Doctrine be pretty much a bailout for liberal radio?

Libtalk has succeeded in a couple cities but mostly is far behind conservative hosts, despite then-Air America bigwig Jon Sinton's prediction in 2004 that "in five years, we'll be on 600 stations" (in a story plugging Air America in the Boston Globe). Boston is an interesting case...AAR lasted from Oct of '04 till Dec of '06, when Clear Channel pulled the plug on WKOX and WXKS' libtalk, substituting "Rumba" Spanish programming.

The latest effort to bring it back came in December when a sports station put on two libtalk shows--they had to buy the time. And these shows have suddenly disappeared now as well. Naturally the libs feel it's a big-media conspiracy to deny them their First Amendment rights, but the FD is more like a squelch on the freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Stations should air what they want, and I don't want the government stepping in. A "localism" bill may be a back door way of bringing the FD back. And yes, nothing wrong with local shows, but let the market decide. What does it say when libtalk crashes and burns in places like Boston and D.C. (At least it wasn't forced on.)

(Meanwhile, Boston conservative host Howie Carr was #1 in his time slot recently. Maybe he's like what Rush claims to be: "I _am_ equal time!" Equal time to oppose the liberal slant elsewhere in media.)

 Liberals are fooling themselves if they want to deny these freedoms with the return of the FD. If left talk flies, great, and if not, that's fine too, but let the market decide! Besides there are many, many other media outlets out there for them.
