Stephanopoulos Pushes Obama to Drop Tax Cuts and to Prosecute Bush's Crimes

Photo of Brent Baker.

Interviewing President-elect Barack Obama for Sunday's This Week, ABC's George Stephanopoulos zeroed in on criticism of including tax cuts in the “stimulus bill” and repeatedly pressed Obama about naming a special prosecutor, a 9/11-like commission or at least getting “your Justice Department to investigate” what an e-mail Stephanopoulos showcased on screen described as “the gravest crimes of the Bush administration, including torture and warrantless wiretapping.” On taxes, Stephanopoulos demanded: “Do you really believe those business tax cuts are going to work to create jobs?” He soon yearned: “But you might give up on some of the business tax cuts?”

Stephanopoulos put this e-mailed question up on the screen from “Bob Fertik of New York City,” failing to note he's a left-wing activist with “Prosecute Bush & Cheney!” at the top of his Web site: “Will you appoint a special prosecutor (ideally Patrick Fitzgerald) to independently investigate the gravest crimes of the Bush administration, including torture and warrantless wiretapping.?” As Obama expressed reticence, Stephanopoulos pushed for alternatives to drag national security officials into the legal process: “So, no 9/11 commission with independent subpoena power?” Not giving up, he offered another way to go: “So, let me just press that one more time. You're not ruling out prosecution, but will you tell your Justice Department to investigate these cases and follow the evidence wherever it leads?”

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Fertik's blog now features how Stephanopoulos posed his question: “Let me thank Stephanopoulos for raising the issue of accountability for the crimes of the Bush Administration -- a topic that is taboo in the Washington Establishment.”

In between those two topics, Stephanopoulos delivered an unintentionally preposterous exchange in which he assumed Obama can do everything but walk on water:

STEPHANOPOULOS: At the end of the day, are you really talking about over the course of your presidency some kind of a grand bargain? That you have tax reform, health care reform, entitlement reform, including Social Security and Medicare where everybody in the country is going to have to sacrifice something, accept change for the greater good?

OBAMA: Yes.

The messiah has arrived. Or Republicans will have to play dead.

Stephanopoulos at least hit Obama with Vice President Dick Cheney's admonition: “Before you start to implement your campaign rhetoric you need to sit down and find out precisely what it is we did and how we did it” to keep the nation safe.

Highlights from the pre-taped interview session aired on the Sunday, January 11 This Week:

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: It's been pretty well-received in the Congress. But you're getting some pushback as well, especially from Senate Democrats on the tax cut portions. Senator Tom Harkin said this is trickle down economics all over again. They're focused especially on the business taxes. Do you really believe those business tax cuts are going to work to create jobs? Or did you put them in so you could get Republican votes?

[OBAMA]

STEPHANOPOULOS: But you might give up on some of the business tax cuts?

....

STEPHANOPOULOS: Let me press down on this, at the end of the day, are you really talking about over the course of your presidency some kind of a grand bargain? That you have tax reform, health care reform, entitlement reform, including Social Security and Medicare, where everybody in the country is going to have to sacrifice something, accept change for the greater good?

BARACK OBAMA: Yes.

STEPHANOPOULOS: And when will that get done?

OBAMA: Well, the -- right now I'm focused on a pretty heavy lift, which is making sure that we get that reinvestment and recovery package in place. But what you describe is exactly what we're going to have to do. What we have to do is to take a look at our structural deficit, how are we paying for government, what are we getting for it, and how do we make the system more efficient?

STEPHANOPOULOS: And eventually sacrifice from everyone.

OBAMA: Everybody's going to have to give, everybody's going to have to have some skin in the game.

....

AUDIO OF DICK CHENEY: Before you start to implement your campaign rhetoric you need to sit down and find out precisely what it is we did and how we did it. Because it is going to be vital to keeping the nation safe and secure in the years ahead and it would be a tragedy if they threw over those policies simply because they've campaigned against them.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Are you going to take it?

....

STEPHANOPOULOS: The most popular question on your own website is related to this. On change.gov, it comes from Bob Fertik of New York City and he asks, "Will you appoint a special prosecutor (ideally Patrick Fitzgerald) to independently investigate the gravest [Stephanopoulos says "greatest"] crimes of the Bush administration, including torture and warrantless wiretapping?"

OBAMA: We're still evaluating how we're going to approach the whole issue of interrogations, detentions, and so forth. And obviously we're going to be looking at past practices and I don't believe that anybody is above the law. On the other hand I also have a belief that we need to look forward as opposed to looking backwards. And part of my job is to make sure that for example at the CIA, you've got extraordinarily talented people who are working very hard to keep Americans safe. I don't want them to suddenly feel like they've got to spend all their time looking over their shoulders and lawyering up.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So, no 9/11 commission with independent subpoena power?

OBAMA: We have not made final decisions, but my instinct is for us to focus on how do we make sure that moving forward we are doing the right thing. That doesn't mean that if somebody has blatantly broken the law, that they are above the law. But my orientation's going to be to move forward.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So, let me just press that one more time. You're not ruling out prosecution, but will you tell your Justice Department to investigate these cases and follow the evidence wherever it leads?

OBAMA: What I -- I think my general view when it comes to my attorney general is he's the people's lawyer. Eric Holder's been nominated. His job is to uphold the Constitution and look after the interests of the American people, not to be swayed by my day-to-day politics. So, ultimately, he's going to be making some calls, but my general belief is that when it comes to national security, what we have to focus on is getting things right in the future, as opposed looking at what we got wrong in the past.

Tax Cuts and Reduced Spending is the only thing that can work

I love how the economically illiterate, Stephanopoulos is just clueless about basic economics. Government cannot create jobs, all they can do is rob capital from the private sector and redirect it into make-work jobs that are not sustainable without further government intervention and thus prevents the creation of real jobs.

Arrogant Conceit: Obama Thinks He Can Reform The Economy (John Stossel, ABC News)
Economic Illiteracy Is Not the Change We Need (Art Carden, Ph.D. Professor of Economics)

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is Not Pollution

And the people who fill the Government jobs retire much younger than the at large population.

Count on supporting them 15 more years than a conventional retiree.

Count on supporting them 15 more years than a conventional retiree.

Hold on there junior, the government employee is supported by a pension that he or the government or both put money into.  The terms of the pension are spelled out and the employee makes sacrifices in terms of money and some advancement opportunities.

In the pension fund I am in the City it is totally self supporting and tied to the stock market.  I put in about 10 percent and the city puts in about the same.  It is in the terms of employment just as with any employer.

Yes I can retire now at 51 and live comfortably for teh rest of my life, but that is a choice I made 27 years ago.  I accepted the idea of being limited in my salary no matter what good work I did.  No bonus, no raise commensurate with my work and so on.

So bottom line is the contract was drawn and we stood by our part and expect the government to stand by theirs.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

→ I know

I didn't say it wasn't in your contract.

I'm just saying the Government is overly generous.  Can't blame you for buying into it.

But yours sounds more like a 401k than a Government paid retirement.  I've got the same thing in a private sector job, except I do get raises commensurate with my individual achievements and the Pension plan isn't tied to the Stock Market unless I want it to be.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Are you bragging?

Cities and States all over the country are facing REAL fiscal crisises due in part to the nifty contracts they have doled out the some of the biggest unions on the planet, government unions. All to get a loyal vote from the biggest block of voters this country may have, government employees.

50 at 55 is insane and is bankrupting our country. So sorry, We beg to differ.

You don't understand.  The fund is self supporting paid for by years of contributions into it.  It is a defined pension fund, it does not rely on any more funds to come in to pay off the pensioners.  In other words the City, state or Feds could stop paying into it now and the fund would pay off,

This is unlike a pension fund with a company who does not guarantee a separate fund they will not touch.  What the politicians lead the public to believe SS is.

Most local governments set their funds up like mine.  Like CA said it was more of a 401K fund, except I don't own it and do not get to decide what vehicles the fund is into.

And like I said it was a decision I made long ago, one you really don't understand.  In a government job you are limited and your salary pigeon holed, with no bonus and your fate at the whim of politics.

There was a period of time when times were tougher teh politicians said everyone had to take a 2% cut and then for 5 years there were no merit increases or cost of living adjustments.  This year I received a 2% increase in salary for a total of last years effort.

We also do not have the option of striking if we are union, Texas right to work, and while there is a union most dont belong.  I think unions suck too.  Do some research before you point fingers.

Taxed to death

where everybody in the country is going to have to sacrifice something

Isn't it enough that I, a simple working man, not on the government dole, already sacrifice almost 50% of my earnings to taxes?

SS tax

Wage tax

State tax (2 states)

Sales tax

Real estate tax

Death tax

Property tax

School tax

County tax

License tax

Liquor tax

Pet license tax

And on and on the list goes. Just got notice from my trash pick up company that although I pay taxes to cover the cost of a landfill, those taxes have been diverted to other uses (with no input from the taxpayers) and my trash bill will rise.

Talk about taxation without representation.

The fact that that dwarf

The fact that that dwarf Stephanopolous is an economic illiterate notwithstanding, his use of this kook's letter is absoloutely hilarious.  Patrick Fitzgerald is damaged goods.  He's a disreputable, partisan, heavy-handed "prosecutor"....Mike Nifong with better PR.  His team already botched a major case last week, and the Blagojevich mess is going to put this fraud's prosecutorial career to bed once and for all.  I can't wait for Scooter Libby and Conrad Black to pick at his carcass once Blago is done with him.

"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." -Ronald Reagan

fitzfong.blogspot.com

Perhaps this is why he is

Perhaps this is why he is the only one left from the Clinton administration that Obama didn't pick.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

Don't sell Fitzgerald short

Don't kid yourself. If Fitzgerald takes down Blagojevich, he'll have a credible case to present himself as being above both parties. He will have taken out a Republican and a Democrat. Rudy Giuliani became a mayor with much less.

Of course, that presumes that he can make a case against Blagojevich. I've heard a number of legal scholars question his methodology, but if he wins the case, no one will remember that two years from now. I suck at predictions, but four years from now, I wouldn't be surprised to see Fitzgerald run for serious office.

Remember The Godfather? Don Corleone agreed to meet with Solozzo because he was told that Solozzo was a serious man. Fitzgerald is a serious man.

But that's the problem with

But that's the problem with Fitzgerald, KC.  In his efforts to protect Obama, he prematurely charged Blagojevich.  As a result, he's prosecuting a guy with insufficient evidence of a crime...he actually requested an extension because he now has a shockingly weak case.  He gave no such consideration to the Bush Administration...he proceeded with an investigation of a non-existent crime even though he knew from day one who the responsible party was.  Because the actual source of the leak was insufficiently linked to the Bush Administration to achieve his partisan objectives, Fitzgerald kept digging in the hopes of creating a process crime.  The fact is that he never proved a crime was committed in court, but was able to use a biased judge and biased jury to convict Libby by inference.  In the Blago matter, Fitzgerald has stopped an investigation and arrested a man before an actual overt criminal act was committed.  In this case, he's going to have a much harder time stacking a jury with the willing partisans he needs to secure a conviction.  If a crook like Blago beats him publicly...and does so because Fitzgerald reined in the case too early in order to protect Obama, it's not going to be Obama who suffers the consequences.  It will be "The Prosecutor's Prosecutor" who will twist in the wind.  And deservedly so.

"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." -Ronald Reagan

fitzfong.blogspot.com

You may be right

Not being a lawyer, I don't pretend to know the reality of Fitzgerald's legal skills - only the perception of them generated by the press. I suppose I take it for granted that the public will forget the details six months after the trial / plea bargain, and just remember that Fitzgerald won the case and took down a corrupt governor. For a political candidate, that's an impressive resume.

I have heard, and am simply passing along, the justification for why Fitzgerald stopped the investigation - he already had enough. After all, if you demand pay for play (and Fitzgerald can prove Blago made such offers), you don't have to wait until the office is sold before you have evidence of a crime. The first offer is enough to convict. And if he had enough already, Fitzgerald may have been free to stop the appointment process before it could be undone.

But wait a second, here, fitz. We don't even know if he intends to run, or where, or under what party. I am saying, though, that if he decides to run, he's got a serious resume.

I have no doubt he intends

I have no doubt he intends to run...in fact, I think getting the Senate nod was probably one of Fitzgerald's considerations.  "Elliot Ness Takes Down Corrupt Governor, New Governor Appoints Him to Senate...Everyone Happy".

Amen, fitz

I have been so disgusted by Fitzgerald. I think he is a total boob. He never gets anything right, as far as I can see, but gets praised as brilliant. Carcus picking can commence at any time, as far as I'm concerned.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So, let me just press that one more time. You're not

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

Revenge will be sweet...

When the armed revolution starts (within 4 years) to remove the communist, aka Democrats, from power old Stephanopoulos and Fretik might want to avoid dark alley's, in fact they might consider living somewhere other than the U.S..  People will remember the name of traitors and they won't be treated kindly.

I see the NYSlimes hasn't learned a lesson and are printing more stolen, or provided by a democrat congress critter, national security secrets. Hasten the death of the Lame Stream Media by all means possible. Don't subscribe to their pravda outlets and boycott their advertisers, what few they have left.

Old, Retired and glad of it.

The fuse that starts the

The fuse that starts the armed revolution in this country will be lit if the Obami administration even attempts to prosecute President Bush for anything.

Or when they attempt to

Or when they attempt to disarm 'we the people'.

Crimes?

I just don't get the "crimes" of the Bush administration bit.  What crimes?   If anything, if any crimes were committed by an administration it was the Clinton administration.   Bush's years were pretty squeaky clean when it comes to that.

It is kind of like the

It is kind of like the statement "I can't describe to you what is pornographic but I can tell you when I see it".

It is easy for George to identify when the President is committing a crime as he was front and center when Clinton was violating the constitution by lying under oath.

I always felt the Republicans left him off the hook to a certain extent seeing that in Arkansas State Bar took his license to practice law since they felt lying under oath was that big of a deal.

I highly doubt Obama would ever have Bush investigated because someday down the road the shoe may be on the other foot.

Stephanopoulos

Anyone else here want to belt Stephanopoulos and wipe that smarmy smile off his face?

George Bush led the charge and freed over 50 million people. Democracy has taken hold in the mideast. The terrorists are on the run.

On the other side is obama who will do whatever he can to allow Iran to get a nuclear bomb. Remeber Biden's comment about obama not responding in a way you think we shoul.

Stephanopolus

This man should be indicted for stupidity.   Who

does he think he is to even try to push his agenda?

Don't forget George Bush has kept us from being

attacked in the last 7 years and as he said, it was

not by coincidence.   The two George Bushes are

class people that Stephie will never, ever, ever

be.

Seems George is soliciting

Seems George is soliciting himself to be the prosecutor in a future investigation of allege Bush crimes.

OBAMA:

"What we have to do is to take a look at our structural deficit, how are we paying for government, what are we getting for it, and how do we make the system more efficient?"

IOW, it's Gore's "Reinventing Government" mandate all over again. Gee, that lasted quick, didn't it? I mean, hey, it does need to get done, but it was supposed to be done, what, 10 years ago? Wanna blame W? Of course you do! But, a "fix" that can be undone so quickly isn't much of a "fix" at all, is it?

<edit, mixed up my SPs> And when will they stop with the "prosecute Bush and Cheney" crap? It's been investigated, attempted, beaten to death. If they were indictable, the Dem Congress would have done it by now, if only to get even for Clinton. Give it up, you wing-nutz! <end edit>

The problem for these people is, Obama actually is a smart enough guy to realize that campaign rhetoric is just that. Guys like Stephie and Fertik don't have a clue.

Same old song and dance.

Always remember this when

Always remember this when watching Georgie and his little Sunday morning show (particularly when Georgie is interviewing Obama): the Executive Producer (the person who runs the show) of George's Sunday program is Ian Campbell.

Ian is the husband of Susan Rice, who just got named by Obama to be US Ambassador to the UN in Dec. Rice is an Albright protegee (a Clintonista, in other words).

A disclosure is called for from ABC. There is a connection between the George's Show and the White House the public should be aware of as they watch anyone from the Obama Administration being interviewed by George.

So how credible is George when he interviews Obama? How tough will he be? How deep will he drive the questions to get the answers from Obama?

Of course, all this backroom stuff could be a simple oversight by ABC. Any day now, they will have full disclosure about the relationship of Ian Campbell and the White House. Most any minute now. Pretty soon. Maybe next Tuesday.

Who caused the problems at Fannie and Fredie?  Did Obama get a great deal on his mansion from felon Rezko?

Obama will only get far left questions

the media is so drastically left wing now that every question to Obama will be about why he isn't acting more radically left.  It's going to be a scary 8 yrs.

Georgie the creepy little cretin...

Obama, to his credit,

Obama, to his credit, deflected pressure from Stephanopoulos by stating his desire to focus on the future rather than the past, just as Bush, to his credit, had responded in a similar manner to goading [to further investigate the Clintons] from those such as the "neutral" Bill O'Reilly.

One might suggest a significant distinction in that Clinton had already been investigated more than any other president in US history, while the Bush administration was subjected to nowhere near the same level of scrutiny.  Nevertheless, I'm firmly in the "looking forward" camp.

Jer

Jer - Well Obama's got a long way to go to show he's above

political persecution.  Bush walked the walk and never tried to sling mud at Dems.  I seriously doubt Obama will be as statesman like.  I think he'll be much more ruthless and classless like Clinton.

Bush was not subjected to the same level of scrutiny?  Damn straight.  He was subjected to much much more bogus scrutiny for nothing.  Clinton was investigated for past and current crimes that were obvious. Bush didn't have any of those.  He didn't sexually harass people or make shady land deals. All he did was run the country and they went after his admin unfairly for pure political reasons.

Obama has already been the least scrutinized Presidential candidate and I'm sure he'll be the least scrutinized President ever and therefore probably the most corrupt.

Something appears to be wrong with your computer.

 You typed this -

Obama, as usual, deflected actually answering a direct question  from Snufalupagus by stating some vague talk about hopychange in the future then passed some gas.

Jer,

Must disagree.

The Bush administration was subjected to just as much scrutiny....the difference being, there was no malfeasance to be prosecuted.  If you recall, Pelosi & the dems were swept into Congress in 2006 on a promise of getting rid of the evil Chimpie McHitler and the Vile Darth Cheney.

Pipe dreams as it turned out.

I agree, though, it's counter productive to incessantly investigate the past (and pro sports).

I sincerely hope Obama keeps his eye on the ball...we live in interesting times.

"...the Bush administration

"...the Bush administration was subjected to nowhere near the same level of scrutiny..."

LOL. Bush has been investigated up one side and down the other.  The truth is he has not committed an obvious transgression like Clinton did, so there was no call for a special investigation (other than from the wacky far left).  If the Dems could find something on him they wouldn't hesitate to pounce.

"...the Bush administration

"...the Bush administration was subjected to nowhere near the same level of scrutiny..."

LOL.

You may find the statement funny, Smartypants, but, unless you were in a coma during the 90's, you can't plausibly deny its accuracy.

Pardons

I hope Bush issues a huge stack of pardons for himself, Cheney, Libby, those two Border Patrol Agents, and anyone from his administration who might be wrongly persecuted (excuse me, prosecuted) for doing their jobs.  His critics will assume the worst anyway, so he shouldn't worry about what they'll say.

Welcome to the era of unity, you racist!

Very well said, nk

Thanks....that was great.

I thought unless the former

I thought unless the former Presidents and their staff committed grievous offense like treason then they generally got passes from the current President.  Obama does not seem to respect teh Presidential codes and unspoken rules so we shall see what he does or does not do.  I think he will vote present on this one.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Just Ask Obama for a job!

Hey Stephanopoulos why don't you just leave TV and join all the other former Clinton staffers, in the White House!

Boy, nothing like trying to

Boy, nothing like trying to put words in someone else's mouth.

What does he think, Obambi can't think for himself?

Fictitious Crimes

The left is more interested in persecuting Bush and Cheney for fictitious crimes, that exist only in the minds of zealots (like Georgie S.), than actually getting the nation through this economic mess brought on by Democrat policies.  The media is always anxious to pursue investigation of Republicans but rarely do they show such enthusiasm for Democrat transgressions.  Why is there no curiosity as to the origins of the financial meltdown?  Why do they show litte interest in Obama's background and friends?  Why is Sarah Palin still being skewered, more than two months after the election?!  It's amazing.

Bob Fertik's web site banned me

Fertik's site at democrats.com has been calling for Bush's impeachment for many years. The problem with the "impeachable offenses" Fertik, et. al. listed was that Bill Clinton also did them. I posted this on the site's public forum:

"I have to wonder if Bob Fertik and the other founders of this web site favor the retroactive impeachment of Bill Clinton. After all, Bill Clinton claimed Iraq had WMD, was a threat to the US, and had operational ties to al Qaeda.

"In 1995, Madeleine Albright told the viewers of 60 Minutes that 'the price was worth it' when Lesley Stahl cited that 500,000 Iraqi children had died as a result of sanctions placed on Iraq. Of course, sanctions were placed on Iraq because Saddam allegedly had WMD. Sanctions were not lifted on Iraq until after that country was liberated in 2003.

"In 1998* Osama bin Laden cited those deaths and the U.S. presence in Saudi Arabia (which Clinton expanded to enforce sanctions placed on Iraq due to Saddam’s alleged WMD) as rationales for sending Clinton “messages with no words.” Those messages were sent during the summer of 1998 when al Qaeda bombed two U.S. embassies in Africa (i.e., American soil), the USS Cole in 2000, and 9/11.

"Instead of attacking al Qaeda after the embassy bombings, Clinton bombed Iraq’s “nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons programs” for four days and then launched a war of choice in Kosovo (without Congressional approval)

"If Fertik is serious about impeaching Bush over Iraq, let’s first conduct a retroactive impeachment of Clinton so that we can get all the facts out on the table before we proceed with impeachment hearings against Bush."

My post was post was promptly deleted and my account banned. Obviously, Fertik has no interest in the truth.

* It interview was actually in 1997.

What did you expect sir.

You pounded a propangandist all about the head with facts and truth.

Might as well toss a bucket of holy water at a vampire. Same effect, much screaming and an imediate dismissal of the likes of you, Mr. sane man.

Hey Steffie

Pull up your dress, go back to the Green Room and chew on some celery.

BTW Arnimus, I thought Clinton was impeached?  Steffie gets the assist.

O's last day 1-20-2013

SteffiNADless, I have a better idea:

Why don't we arrest your former boss and try him for gross dereliction of duty. After all, it was your former employer, William Jefferson Clinton, who was much too busy playing "stash the stogie" with a hideously overweight intern when he should have been carrying out his sworn duty to defend this nation from foreign attack.

While we're at it, why don't we look into your own duplicity in the five attacks AQ carried out against this country?

After all, you did have Billy Jeff's ear, did you not?

-Or, were you too busy covering up for the incompetence of Bill Clinton?

Sure, Boy George...why

Sure, Boy George...why don't you come across with the inside stuff on Vince Foster, Ron Brown, Travelgate, Whitewater, Broaddrick, what was going on in Mena, and on and on and on.

One of the 24% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 89% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

Barry Seal isn't here

Barry Seal isn't here anymore to talk about Mena either.

RR GOP

Just excactly how many investigations would you like to see, RR.  Were four separate ones regarding Vince Foster not enough since they all unequivocally established he committed suicide?  Were three independent counsel and fifty million dollars inadequate to properly investigate Whitewater, travelgate, filegate, etc?  Were twenty Republican-lead committees and subcommittees wasting taxpayer money by springing into action every time the Clintons sneezed insufficiently zealous?  Why didn't we simply grind the government to a complete halt for eight years and force the Clintons to testify before a federal grand jury every single day of his presidency?

Vince Foster's

Vince Foster;s suicide compares well to one of LBJ's enemies found dead in a field when LBJ was a senator. He committed suicide by shooting himself 14 times in the back.

Right, solid analogy,

Right, solid analogy, coco...

Foster was shot once.  The FBI, the National Park Service, Republican IC Robert Fisk, Republican IC Ken Starr, and a whole bevy of congressional Republican investigators all concluded it was a suicide, despite Herculean efforts to somehow implicate the Clintons.

Time to put the murder fable to bed.
