Angst on PBS Over Too-Long Wait for Obama's Inauguration

Photo of Brent Baker.

In the midst of a discussion about President-elect Barack Obama's national security team, Washington Week host Gwen Ifill on Friday night's program sought confirmation for her theory that “what people are beginning to say is that this President-elect should be President now” as “people are saying why isn't Barack Obama leading the fight about the auto-makers?”

New York Times reporter Peter Baker agreed: “That's right, exactly.” He proceeded to fret over how “people voted for change and this strange, odd 77-day waiting period that we impose...between our election and our inauguration” just isn't compatible with the “hyperactive 24/7 fast-moving culture that we have today.” Baker admired how “Obama is trying to find some balance between respecting President Bush,” whom Baker conceded is “still in charge,” and “finding a way to assert leadership.”

The exchange on the Friday, December 5 Washington Week on PBS:

GWEN IFILL: Is there any way to look at this and think to yourself that maybe what people are beginning to say is that this President-elect should be President now? I mean, there seems to be this pressure, people are saying why isn't Barack Obama leading the fight about the auto-makers? Why isn't he -- I saw a poll where his approval rating was higher for his handling of the Mumbai attacks than President Bush's, even though he didn't do anything.

PETER BAKER, NEW YORK TIMES: That's right, exactly.

IFILL: So there's this desire-

BAKER: People voted for change and this strange, odd 77-day waiting period that we impose, in effect, between our election and our inauguration -- which is necessary to build a new government and get ready -- but it's such a long period in a hyperactive 24/7 fast-moving culture that we have today. And Barack Obama is trying to find some balance between respecting President Bush, who's still in charge, and finding a way to assert leadership. He's had, so far now, six press conferences since the election. He's going to have a seventh on Sunday, Pearl Harbor day. This is an unusual amount of public exposure for a President who hasn't yet taken office and he's been faster in naming his top appointments than any President-elect in modern times. He's got more than half of his cabinet and senior White House team already named. He wants to show action, he wants to show leadership but he has a little bitted number of tools to do it.

DAVID WESSEL, WALL STREET JOURNAL: And look, it's not surprising, given how rapidly the economy is deteriorating, the prospect of the auto companies going bankrupt before the inauguration -- it's an urgent problem, and if you think the President is a lame duck and is impotent then you want the new guy to take over.

"Hyperactive fast moving culture"

Maybe they shouldn't be so hyper-active

I don't know when they changed it,

But Inauguration day used to be around mid-March.

These folks would have really gone bonkers (  a good thing).

Yeah but,  wait till obama is in office and watch the 'get something done' spotlight will shift away from the President back to Congress, which is where it should be anyway.  The President can only wait to sign a bill passed by Congress.  And the problem isn't that President Bush is a Lame Duck or 'impotent'.  Congress is a self-led institution and has it's own leaders.  If they want to get something done all they have to do is 'do it'.

Why don't we just move it

Why don't we just move it back to March 4?  Just to piss 'em off.

Hey

Can Bush, as Commander in Chief, declare an emergency? Hole up in the White House? How about an executive order declaring the Statehood of Hawaii as invalid, no valid signature on something? Then no President Obama from Hawaii, right? Naa, I guess not.

Or...

He could deam the county in such bad shape that he issues an emergency executive order declaring that he needs to stay in office to see the county through this crisis.

I will cry when GWB leaves office.

I don't mind waiting-

Personally, I am enjoying watching Congress squirm!

They broke it, let them fix it!

Be careful of the words you speak.  Someday you may have to eat them!

OJT

"strange, odd 77-day waiting period"

Yes, how strange that there's on-the-job training. Most people go through OJT before being let loose. For the presidency though, let's just let him have at it.

odds keep rising

I remember the year 2000 when Al Gore thought the electoral college was odd because where he came from the one with the most votes wins.

Now the 77 day waiting period to swear in Obama is odd.

What's next?

Oh, yeah. Capitalism will be odd.

Then gun ownership, then Christianity, then . . . .

I notice the liberals arent

I notice the liberals arent complaining about the EC this time around, nor are they complaining about election and voter fraud.  The Jackson/Sharpton syndicate has been strangely silent.

It seems that it's only when conservatives win then it's voter fraud and intimidation.

I saw a poll where his

I saw a poll where his approval rating was higher for his handling of the Mumbai attacks than President Bush's, even though he didn't do anything.

Well there's a storyline we might as well get used to.  Obama does nothing...public cheers wildly, the Constitutions twenty-second amendment limiting a President to two terms seen as out of step with the majority of Americans.

I saw a poll where his

I saw a poll where his approval rating was higher for his handling
of the Mumbai attacks than President Bush's, even though he didn't do
anything.

Uh, yeah.

It works, because when you actually make a decision and stand up for something, that's when you get into trouble.

   Actually I'm kind of

Actually I'm kind of anxious for obama to take over because I want to see how the media changes it's reporting of the personal responsibility, by the President, for solving problems and if obama will become the reconstituted bill clinton who 'feels our pain'.  Not someone to fix our pain, just someone who empathizes with us.  Take Katrina and New Orleans, clinton would have been photographed surrounded by beleagured residents (minorities of course) a tear in his eyes, while he gives gentle hugs of support.  The man would have been portrayed by the media as a Saint.  I have the feeling obama is going to become the 'conscience' of the country, a gentle ruler who will encourage, warn, and scold us when necesary, but will not be held responsible for failings of those who work for him or problems for which there are no good solutions.

polls? we don't need no stinkin' polls!

...and I saw a poll one that predicted John Kerry to be the winner.

Rules? I Don't need no stinkin Rules

Everthing will be Bush's fault anyway, why not wait till 1/20?

Change!

Peter Baker understands the Constitution better than most. Unlike President Bush who clings to the dreadful strict-constructionist dogma rejected by the majority change generation, Baker insists that change occur now! This "strange, odd" period of delay is culturally passe'. He knows that when our culture changes the constitution must change also. Recall that it wasn't until recently that the mention of God in the public discourse was actually constitutional! When those that believe in God failed to assert their rights the loudest mouths pronounced a new interpretation of the "old" constitution. We should all march on the White House and demand Bush simply transfer power now. After all, Bush can give up 77 days. That is not much in return for a future tit for tat. Maybe two years down the road another group can march and demand ObamaOne become ObamaGone. Maybe they could have a "sit-in" at the Capitol and tell Pelosistosis to go home to her plastic surgeon. Let's march for Change!

Was George Bush a good President?

I would have to say no. Now before somebody says I am drinking the liberal Koolaid, I give him credit for his accomplishment.

First I do not fault him for going to war with Iraq, because the Dems and Republicans all saw the  same the same evidence,

I believe he did a fantastic job of bringing the country together after 911, He has also helped to keep our nation safe after the initial 911 attack, for which all Americans should be grateful.

Now for the bad. He along with a Republican house and senate spent like drunk sailors and along with the scandals helped the Dems take back power in 06.

His privatizing social security failed, his guest worker program failed, he could have said it was none of anybodys business why he fired the attorneys, but instead he said it was non political and it caused many people to lose to their jobs

He almost doubled our national debt, our federal deficit is at a record number.

What is going on now is certainly not  all his fault, but it is pretty sad to be ending your term with unprecendted federal bailout and the biggest loss of jobs in 30 years.

He had my vote

Dammit Shawn!!!!

I can't really argue with you. Sure, I could argue how dems are just as copable on certain points, but in the end, History will be the final judge of Bush's performance, not you, nor I, nor these leftist idiots who can't stop drooling over their own messiah long enough to do their damn jobs.

I think that the most

I think that the most important job of the President is to keep Americans safe, and Bush has done a tremendous job of that.  I think that all these characters around the world that want harm to come to us knows that with Bush, if you cross the US in such a way that he will find out who is responsible and kick your a$$.  That's the main reason I voted for McCain.  I'm sure these guys knew McCain would respond the same way Bush did.  With Obama, I bet they will be willing to take a chance and see how Obama will react (just like Biden said).  Very scary prospect.

Gee, I wonder...

If we'll hear all of this B.S. when a Republican wins????

Concur with that. Also

Concur with that.

Also wonder, since the comment was made of as “people are saying why isn't Barack Obama leading the fight about the auto-makers?”
IS Barack REALLY gonna do what the Big three need to become profitable? 1.) Beat the unions into submission? Hardly.
2.) Remove restrictive requirements on car design? No way.
3.) Reduce taxes on the production? Hee=hee....

IS Barack REALLY gonna do

IS Barack REALLY gonna do what the Big three need to become profitable? 1.) Beat the unions into submission? Hardly.

I agree; there's not a chance.

Without the unions, we could be building plants like this

And they wonder why our corporations move their operations out of the country!!

motherbelt

"And they wonder why our corporations move their operations out of the country!!"

"That One" said he wouldn't let any corporations move out of the country.  Now I wonder HOW he's going to do that.  Will he wave his magic wand so the people who own the corporations will be happy to pay more taxes?  Or, will he send in his civilian force to "convince" them by any means necessary not to relocate?

"If we conservatives moved to those seven non-existent States, the government couldn’t find us and tax us to death!"

LMM

I'm guessing he'll appropriate some "soldiers" from the protections racket to convince them to be "good corporate citizens".

It's funny MB

If you buy a Ford, you may be keeping Brazilians working. If you buy a Toyota, you are likely keeping Americans working. Toyota has six plant in North America. The one in San Antonio has recently begun operations again on one line, with the second to come online by March hopefully. Of course, during the three month halt in operations, the workers were still paid, and Toyota used the time for more training. From what I understand, most of the employees were still required to report for work and trained while the lines were down.

Hmmm, efficient use of down time even. I wonder why foreign companies are kicking our butts?

Gwen Ifill asserts:

Gwen Ifill asserts: "“what people are beginning to say is that this President-elect should be President now” and “people are saying why isn't Barack Obama leading the fight about the auto-makers?”

"[W]hat people are beginning to say ..." and "people are saying ..."?

That is one of the most favored techniques employed by leftists in the Washington press corps like Gwen Ifill.  Allege that so-called "people say" something when in fact it is leftists like Gwen Ifill who say things and then allege that it's "people" who are saying such things.

Retarded?

Gwen Ifill asserts: "“what people are beginning to
say is that this President-elect should be President now” and “people
are saying why isn't Barack Obama leading the fight about the
auto-makers?”

Are these people retarded?  She doesn't seem to understand that the President elect has a waiting period until he takes over. I truly don't think she understands that.  I think she's that stupid.

Are these people retarded?  I'm not being sarcastic, I seriously wonder.  Holy smokes.

Well, all you MSM types who

"Some Democrats" (got that, Gwen?)  think he should be doing more!

Well, all you MSM types who are in such a hurry for Obama to take over, how about a call for him to cancel his vacation?

Should he really be going off to Hawaii when the country is in such bad shape????

I wish someone would actually say he shouldn't go.  I would love to see the MSM have to turn on a dime and start saying well he really isn't President yet so he can't do anything.

Mike, you answer your own question.

These people are in fact retarded by definition.

I could maybe understand

I could maybe understand ignorant Americans who don't know their constitution very well wondering why Obama can't just get in their and take over right now.  But Gwen Ifill and the other two chuckle heads should know better.

By repeating stupid statements made by ignorant people, they give stupid statements legitimacy.  Plus, it makes them look ignorant, too.

take "look" out of your post and i'll agree.

----- Radical  Liberal

These power-hungry morons

These power-hungry morons don't want an inauguration, they want a coronation.  How do such childish brats get into positions of influence?  It boggles the mind....

BTW This also shows that they think a president is a dictator. What will Barry do - issue an edict that all poverty, and all financial crises and all problems of any kind no longer exist - and SHAZAAM! Instant utopia???

These people are dumber than I thought.

power-hungry morons

power-hungry morons

Now that's a truly frightening thought!

I think Obama fears, the

I think Obama fears, the longer the "pretend inauguration" takes place, the sooner the American public will find out they've been duped into voting a non-natural born, Indonesian-Pakistani-Kenyan citizen as president of the greatest nation on earth, the USA.

For Obama:  Orbis non Suffici ("The World is NOT enough")

Unless you can prove that

Unless you can prove that Obamas mother did not give birth to him, he is a natural born US citizen.

To assert otherwise is equal to the morornic claim that Gov Palin did not give birth to her son last year but rather her daughter did.

Both claims require a HUGE commitment of the power of make believe.

In semolinas defense

He(?)may have been referring to the claim that Obama was born in Kenya to his under-age mother. Which would mean he has no claim to American citizenship. And then there is the whole 'Indonesia doesn't accept dual citizenship' issue.
Personally, I have no idea where he was born. Seems like that is an issue his staff should have definitively laid to rest a long time ago.

In order to be pro-choice, one must first be born. Ah, the irony.

If a US Citizen gives birth

If a US Citizen gives birth overseas to a child, that child is by Definition a US Citizen by natural birth. Most of my troops have kids born in foreign countries who are elligible to run for president.

Absolutely....I've posted

Absolutely....I've posted this before.  My twin sons were born on Torrejon Air Base outside Madrid.  It was not US territory..it is a Spanish Air Base;they have birth certicates in Spanish,  recording their birth in the town of Torrejon de Ardoz.

Their certificates from the American Embassy say  certificate of the birth abroad of a US Citizen.

Mother: I dislike CONSPIRO's

Mother:

I dislike CONSPIRO's of all types, including those who are nominally on our side.

And that is what we have in the "Where was Obama Born" ilk.

Ditto.  I actually edited

Ditto.  I actually edited the last line out of my comment by mistake...it said:

IMO it's really time for some on this site to let that go.

Yes, I think so. Here's this:

No one has tried to "prove" that Obama's mother "did not give birth to him." Think about it.  I am sitting here laughing, truly. Try to keep up. ok?

I think there are only two choices apply to liberals:

1. They don't actually believe what they're saying, but want others to believe it, in which case, they are liars.

2.  They beleive what they are saying, in which case, they're morons,

A liberal is either a liar or a moron.  I can't find any other possible practical answers.  A moronic liar maybe, but that's about it.

Samuel "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelbacher

Well semolina

There is always the method of praying they will invalidate Obamas Presidency

He had my vote

it can't be that simple

The government is like the Titanic - and no, I'm not referring to the sinking.  I refer more towards its attempt to change course prior to the sinking.  A ship that large, with propellors as big as those, can't simply change course that quickly.

Our government is a huge, slow-moving bureaucracy. I would suspect that part of the waiting period is to give the President-elect time to be brought up-to-speed on a variety of issues, as well as to give the government time to make all of the administrative changes that are necessary. (I can't even begin to guess what all of those changes would be - printing of government forms with new officials' names, email and computer security clearance procedures, who know...)

Government can't change as fast as Obama's campaign statements.  I would also suspect that time is needed to wrap things up with the outgoing president, as well as to make preparations for the new president.  I don't know if that's the way this works or not, it just seems to be a common-sense issue to me.  I'm sure the media could find out about if they tried, but then they would have to stop fawning over The One long enough to do that.

But to hell with all of that, Obama is the Change We Have Been Waiting For.  Bush could move to the EOB while Obama puts his pens and highlighters into the center drawer of his Oval Office desk, right?  If Bush were truly as gracious as the drive-by media said he was during this transition, he'd vacate the premises now.  <sarcasm finished for today - unless some slab-headed liberal gives me a dumb reply>

Go to www.howobamagotelected.com

Has anyone been to www.howobamagotelected.com?

There is a short youtube video of Obama voters being polled after they voted.  I can't wait for Obama and his Clinton retread cabinet to fail!!!!

  Well one thing for sure,

Well one thing for sure, the day after Obama is sworn in, according to the MSM, the sun will be warmer, the sky’s will be bluer, hurricanes will run the other way, there will be no hungry, or uninsured, or the employment rate will be wonderful no matter what the number is. There is no gas problem, no terrorist, what war?? There will be polls telling us NOW the world loves us. No more bread lines, no more homeless. They will tell us that our very own toilet will smell like roses, just because of Obama. Unicorns, Gumdrops, pennies from heaven, the tooth fairy, the great pumpkin..,  leprechauns, big foot will be found and he will be nice and wearing a Obama t-shirt,  Atlantis, the fairy God mother,  the Loc ness monster will show up with an Obama bumper sticker on his back.

Ohhhh if only 1/20 would get here, hurry.. so the world will be great again.

(Boy are these A-hole going to be disappointed. )

Obama Worshipers

Barack Obama and his campaign managed to 'Ride the Wave' of popular trends like 'American Idol' and pithy 'Meaningless' slogans like 'Change' and 'Hope'.

'Change' was for anything his followers wanted and 'Hope' was for anything his followers desired.

With 'Followers' who do NOT use facts, reason and logic to make decisions the rest was easy. Barack Obama voters were not just stupid they were mesmerized by a 'False Image' who promised miracles for everyone.

"... a light will shine through that window, a beam of light will come down upon you, you will experience an epiphany ... and you will suddenly realize that you must go to the polls and vote for Obama" - Barack Obama Lebanon, New Hampshire.

“It is absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.” Barack Obama

Conned by 'Obama' a Snake Oil Salesman

Barack Obama has never held a job that did NOT involve talking- unless you consider 'Organizing Communities for Communists' a job.

Barack Obama has 'ZERO' executive experience - he has never even run a lemonade stand.

Barack Obama was elected President of Harvard Law Review but published 'NOTHING".

Barack Obama was an Illinois Senator 1996-2004 - voted 'Present' 129 times.

Barack Obama never authored and brought to vote ONE BILL of his own. You know, the stuff, senators are supposed to do. Not just show up and vote 'present'.

Barack Obama, as a US Senator logged 143 days of which he accomplished 'NOTHING'.

Barack Obama (off teleprompter) name the most significant thing you have ever done? uhh umm er uh duh

Barack Obama could not even run his own campaign - David Axelrod did.

Liberals are bragging about being 'Conned' - how funny!

if you are a good enough 'Con Man' like Barack Obama – which involves appearing not quite good enough and rather sympathetic to those they 'Con' – you will get away with it.

Barack Obama walking the path between the 'Obama Current Truth' and the delusions of those who trust him - this apparition is either a fiend or the 'Messiah'.

The advantage Barack Obama has over his 'Rubes', is that his lies about his past and lies about the future of his 'Rubes' are so outlandish - the Obama lies are transmuted until the 'Rubes' rejoice in their being conned.

This orgiastic moment could only be achieved on those decadent 'Rubes' that think they are so intelligent that they could NOT possibly be conned - what a group!

The real Barack Obama

Barack Obama is NOT what he seems, nor is he otherwise.

Protest too Much?

I thought Ifill's book wasn't going to be ready to Inauguration Day.  Is it already finished and now she wants an earlier rollout?

"I think that when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."  Barack Obama to "Joe the Plumber"

We'll see

We'll see what happens when That One "takes over." He's been able to convince the liberals that he's got all the answers and can't wait to get started. Watch for the "Deer in the headlights" look on January 21st! "We had no idea how bad it was. This could take 8 years to fix!" Long before the election, we were all fairly certain he would win. Is there any possibility that layoffs and unemployement spiked BECAUSE he was elected?

"That One" and his cult

"That One" has the biggest cult following I have ever seen.  These people cannot understand reason.  They can only hear and follow what he says, worshipping him all the way. God help us all when (if) he takes office.  He will only accelerate the destruction of our country.

"If we conservatives moved to those seven non-existent States, the government couldn’t find us and tax us to death!"

The DUMB media

Does the media realize that Barack is not even the President-Elect yet?  There is a little detail called the "Electoral College" which is what ACTUALLY ELECTS THE PRESIDENT! http://en.wikipedia.... is a link for the illiterazi.

Obama may have all of the college votes, but there is a little rag of paper called the Constitution that says this election still needs to happen.  They instead should be complaining about the arrogance of the made-up Office of the President-Elect title when he has not even been selected by the Electoral College yet.

Second, if he DID get elected, there is still the matter of Congress also.  They are not sworn yet either so all they can do is get Obama to put up his 10,000 executive orders early.  Recognize with all the people to get in place, it will take months.  Another 45 days matters not.

The panic that dunderheads like Ifill should be considering is their reporting malfeasance.  For example when President Bush called for Congressional action multiple times since 2003 to increase oversight on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac,  and each time a majority of liberal Democrats aided by liberal Republicans blocked anySenate action, why is it they didn't report it along with the facts? The interesting part is that the Republicans are largely gone, but the Democrats have been returned to office.  Again, no comment by the media.   Is it any wonder that the entertainer Limbaugh has 10X the following of Ifill's TV show?

"What experience and history teach is
this - that people and governments never have learned anything from history,
or acted on principles deduced from it."

G. W. F. Hegel

Obama needs all the time he can get

before he's actually in charge of doing something.  Maybe if he'd bothered showing any leadership while he was Senator he'd be more prepared.  Maybe he should be called the President Intern instead of President Elect?

I have already had enough of Barry

I wonder what the reaction in 2000 would have been if George W Bush had invented a phony "Office of the President Elect",  complete with a podium,  and started acting like he already was the
president.  Don’t you just love the whipped up sense of "urgency" liberals are creating as a pretext to have Barry take office early.

I lived through theCarter Administration.  By the time of the 1980 election, unemployment was over 8%, the prime rate was close to 20%, gold prices were nearing an historical all time record high and Iran had been holding Americans hostage for close to 400 days.   We didn’t hear a peep from Ronald Reagan until inauguration day and the world didn’t come to an end.  The presumptuousness of  this empty suit Obama is galling.

Lead?

“people are saying why isn't Barack Obama leading the fight about the auto-makers?”

In order to lead, one has to be a leader, either trained in leadership or blessed with the natural ability to lead.  Obama has neither.  He couldnt lead a horse to water.

the perfect example
