The broadcast network evening newscasts on Wednesday night all marked Barack Obama's victory with stories on celebrations around the world, the joy expressed by African-Americans and how newspapers sold out as people cheered in the streets. NBC anchor Brian Williams hailed: “As one columnist put it, America matured in 2008 by choosing Barack Obama.” CBS, however, aired the most triumphant story. Though Ronald Reagan earned nearly 59 percent of the vote in 1984 and George Bush captured more than 53 percent four years later, an awed Byron Pitts began by proposing about Obama's win with 52 percent: “When was the last time our nation cheered this much?”
Pitts proceeded to cite anecdotes about several people, black and white, who saw vindication in Obama's victory, including two women at “a suburban home in Iowa. Iowa, the state that first bought into Obama's audacious hopes and where a life-long Democrat like Deb Tekippe and a life long Republican like Brenda Myer made a toast with champagne.” He concluded:
“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union.” That's what the Constitution says. Last night, all across America for so many people, that's how it felt. A more perfect union.
On the NBC Nightly News, Williams set up a story on general public reaction, as opposed to a separate piece on black reaction: “This nation woke up this morning changed. As one columnist put it, America matured in 2008 by choosing Barack Obama. Tonight, NBC's Kevin Tibbles takes stock of a new day.”
I searched for any such line from a columnist and came up empty, but I did locate that formulation attributed, in a Reuters dispatch, to Jesse Jackson:
Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson said his satisfaction at Obama's success was conditioned by a sense of history. Jackson witnessed the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968 and twice ran for president in the 1980s. “His (Obama) winning means America's getting better. We are more mature. We are less anxious around each other,” he said in an interview.
Over on ABC's World News, anchor Charles Gibson introduced a story:
In many cities all across the country last night, it was as if the local team had won the World Series or the Super Bowl. Barack Obama supporters danced in the streets, wept, halted traffic, and lifted their voices in prayer.
The Pitts retrospective on the Wednesday, November 5 CBS Evening News, which Couric set up by employing the same World Series analogy as had Gibson:
KATIE COURIC: The celebrations we saw overnight were like none we had ever seen. In many towns in America it was as if they just won the World Series. But then the country has never seen an election like this one. Here's our national correspondent, Byron Pitts.MAN SELLING NEWSPAPERS: Obama won!
BYRON PITTS: It's hard to capture it in the headline or in an overhead shot [of crowd at Grant Park], but when was the last time-
BARACK OBAMA: It's been a long time coming.
PITTS: -our nation cheered this much?
OBAMA: Change has come to America.
PITTS: Wept this long? From a park in Chicago, a church basement in Cleveland, a church where the pastor's own distant cousin was shot and killed for simply trying to vote in 1930.
PASTOR: It sends chills up my spine.
PITTS: To Ann Nixon-Cooper's living room. President-elect Obama called her by name.
ANN NIXON-COOPER: I stayed up to listen for it.
OBAMA: Ann Nixon-Cooper is 106 years old.
PITTS: To a suburban home in Iowa. Iowa, the state that first bought into Obama's audacious hopes-
OBAMA: Thank you, Iowa.
PITTS: -and where a life-long Democrat like Deb Tekippe and a life long Republican like Brenda Myer made a toast with champagne.
VOICE: 2008, Iowa!
DEB TEKIPPE: I just think it just kind of shows what Brenda and I have gone through the same way the country has gone through. The fact that we can have our differences, we can discuss them and we can come together with a common goal.
PITTS: For Barack Obama, that goal started with a speech near the very same steps where Lincoln once spoke.
BARACK OBAMA: I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America!
PITTS: Just words that energized so many, made use of so much.
INTERNET VIDEOS: Yes, we can. Yes, we can.
PITTS: Yes, the road had its moments.
OBAMA DURING PRIMARY DEBATE: I was fighting these fights.
PITTS: Some heart felt.
HILLARY CLINTON: I have so many opportunities from this country.
PITTS: Some hurtful.
JEREMIAH WRIGHT: Not God bless America-
PITTS: Old demons and new ones. What Barack Obama started actually began long ago. Out of the huts of history's shame, the poet wrote, a history reflected upon inside Atlanta's historic Ebenezer Baptist church last night, the church where Dr. King once preached of dreams. Dreams his long-time friend, Reverend Joseph Lowery, finally saw come true.
REVEREND JOSEPH LOWERY: The minute t the card clicked out of the voting machine it dawned on me I had just voted for an African American for President, for the 44th President of the United States. And I froze and out of my mouth came "Hallelujah."
PITTS: That history was on the minds of millions of Americans last night. People like Sondra Hollinger Samuels of Minnesota. We first met her at the Democratic convention this summer, the night Obama's name was put into nomination. Then and now, she remembered what her father might say.
SONDRA HOLLINGER SAMUELS: He would say "God almighty, I can't believe it!" I mean, he would, he would be so, he would be so proud.
PITTS: Her father is actually still alive. At 72, Alzheimers is stealing away Richard Hollinger's mind and his memories. But not ours, not his daughter's.
SAMUELS: It's more than I ever thought that it could be, you know? I mean, the words in our Constitution are coming to life in a real tangible way.
PITTS: “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union." That's what the constitution says. Last night, all across America for so many people, that's how it felt. A more perfect union. Byron Pitts. CBS News, New York.
My June 9 NewsBusters item, “CBS's Byron Pitts Concedes He's 'Excited' by Obama's Nomination,” recounted:
On Sunday's Reliable Sources, Howard Kurtz played a clip of CBS reporter Byron Pitts on Wednesday's CBS Evening News hailing Barack Obama's Democratic nomination victory as proof "one of America's oldest and ugliest color lines has been broken, and there is a new bridge for a new generation," then proposed: "You obviously are paid to be an objective journalist, but some part of you must be excited that Barack Obama won this nomination." Pitts confirmed his excitement: "Well, certainly. I mean, as an African-American man, this is significant. I mean, look, for my entire life I've been able to, as a man, dream of doing great things. But a dream I could never have was being President of the United States. Now, for instance, my sons, my nephew, they can have that dream. And I think those kinds of images are important."...

DEB TEKIPPE: I just think it just kind of shows what Brenda and I have gone through the same way the country has gone through. The fact that we can have our differences, we can discuss them and we can come together with a common goal.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 22:25 ET by BlazerThe left has some interesting codewords this election cycle.
Matured=Turned Marxist
Racist=Any criticism of Barack Obama.
However the lefttist MSM seems to have not picked up on the Tampa bay area Republican candidate that was severely burned when someone tied a mattress under his car and rigged it to catch fire.
Oh by the way, he was black.

Expatriate Living
Wed, 11/05/2008 - 22:39 ET by ShanghaiRayI'm feeling much better today and resigned myself to the "Deal of Fate". The cards might have not been shuffled correctly and the Obama campaign dealt from under the deck but there is not a damn thing we can do about it.
This might not be an option for everyone but for all of you that are fed of with all up the bullshit in America I suggest you look into expatriate living. Find a job and move overseas. You can live a pretty good life overseas and receive tax breaks and incentives such as cost of living allowances etc. No one will harass you, bother you, ask you what your politics are etc. In fact, contrary to what you hear in the media, Americans are treated extremely well overseas. I live in a nice condo, have a nice job, have friends from all over, live in a totally safe enviornment free from radicalism or crime, celebrate all the holidays as I see fit and return home to the USA from time to time to get my fair share of bullshit just like the rest of you.
You will also run into more people that have positive images of the USA than negative. People beggging, wanting, desiring to go to the USA in search of the American dream.
Sound like abandoning your own country huh? Not really, but if a ship is sinking are you going to do down with the ship with the rest of the poor souls?
Anyway, my heart is with all of my fellow Americans who really love the country and miss what it used to be. Those days are gone. Remember this, we are a nation of immigrants and our ancestors left their ancestral homes in search of something better or at least something not as bad.
The feeling that comes with peace of mind cannot be underestimated.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 23:23 ET by balboaThat's a much more sensible attitude. I thought Baldwin and others were stupid for saying they'd leave if Bush won (and so did conservatives), and now Republicans are saying the same thing because Obama won.

Then you must live in
Wed, 11/05/2008 - 23:08 ET by zfThen you must live in Shangri-La. I've studied the world, and the place you describe does not exist. No country is free from crime, radicalism and BS.
And who needs a fair-weather "patriot" like you, anyway? You're just like those Hollywood types who rant and rave about leaving the country when they didn't get their guy elected.
It's a good thing Americans during the Civil War, Depression, and the 60's and 70's didn't think the way you do. I do put up with a lot of BS too (mostly because I choose to for the sake of keeping touch with what the enemies are saying and doing), but I also have friends from all over, live nicely, don't get bothered and asked because/about my politics and celebrate holidays the way I want. Your extended stay has really left you out of touch.
You *are* abandoning your country sir, sinking ship or not, it's more noble to go down fighting than reach the shore and live like a sanctimonous, unprincipled alive coward. Besides, comparing a life or death situation to one where things are not going the way you want is insipid. And where are we supposed to go anyway, socalist decripit immoral Europe? To the Middle East where the Islamofacists dwell? To Canada where property rights are ignored and people die waiting for health care? Latin countries with their violence and poverty?
America's demise has promised before, it will fail again. And yeah, I do feel better than last night but my new peace of mind comes from faith in God and knowing that fighting for your ideals is what makes you great, not fleeing at every sign of trouble. America does not need to be perfect to still be great.
Have fun in Cuba or Russia or Communist China or wherever your supposed paradise is, quitter.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 23:13 ET by PrairieSkyMany of us aren't in a position to leave America, and even if we were, we wouldn't anyway. I am an American, and this is my country and my home. Granted, things aren't good now, and will likely become more difficult before they become better, but warts and all, I'm not abandoning my country.
Instead, I will work, pray, hope and wait for better days, which I am confident will come again.
America is worth fighting for.

Hah...
Thu, 11/06/2008 - 00:18 ET by ShanghaiRayFirst of all I'm not going to even start defending myself point-by-point from all of the ludircous and ignorant b.s. that was written above about expatriate living. Obviously, those people haven't a clue.
I will say that Americans living, working and developing businesses overseas are pioneers of change through capitalism in countries that went down the socialist road that America seems to seek at this moment in history.
The other day I heard Obama remark about how China had a better infrastructure (bridges, roads etc. )than the USA as the prelude to some sort of defense about socialism. He was wrong on a couple of points. One, China's infrastructure is nowhere near as good as the USA. He must have seen some pics of downtown Shanghai or Beijing. And two, socialism had nothing to do with China's development. Capitalism was/is the driving force of change in China. Capitalism brought by Americans like myself and others. China has a long way to go and is still dominated by a totalitarian government, however, through capitalism this is changing everyday.
I was not saying expatriate life is for everyone. On the contrary, it's obvious that the above ranter would never survive in another country and should therefore stay cuddled up to his guns and Bible instead of taking a breather and seeing things from a different perspective. Who is the real coward? A person brave enough to travel and work in a foreign land while at the same time opening their own eyes to the good, bad and ugly of our native lands or persons who would rather hide behind the anonymity of the internet and stick their collective heads in the sand while the liberals eat you all alive.
I applaude your efforts
Thu, 11/06/2008 - 00:26 ET by BlazerI applaude your efforts Shanghai and say keep up the good work.
However you may want to point out the fact that your living in China first, before you preach on the values of being an ex-patriot, otherwise it ends up looking like comedy.
But still keep up the great work, Capitalist driven Communism with a totalitarian government seems to be all the rage these day's, in fact it's catching on over here too.

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 06:43 ET by Rush FanI rarely criticize comments made by others here at NewsBusters. As a famous quote states: "You have a right to your own opinion..."
However, your response beginning with "Hah" completely ignored the primary points you made in your initial post beginning with Expatriate Living. They were:
1) "but for all of you that are fed of with all up the bullshit in America I suggest you look into expatriate living."
2) "and return home to the USA from time to time to get my fair share of bullshit just like the rest of you."
3) "Sound like abandoning your own country huh? Not really, but if a ship is sinking are you going to do down with the ship with the rest of the poor souls?"
4) "Those days are gone. Remember this, we are a nation of immigrants and our ancestors left their ancestral homes in search of something better or at least something not as bad."
Posters zf, Blazer, balboa, and PrairieSky, were responding to your post by making the crucial point that this beautiful U.S.A. is worth staying and fighting for. I believe the same as they do. Moreover, I've been around here long enough to know that bigtimer feels the same way.
Living in this glorious country and trying to improve it is worth any and all "bullshit", as you like to call it. By the way, this wonderful and powerful ship is nowhere close to sinking!
You write that "those days are gone." You sound discouraged. Don't be. I see that you are a fan of Rush Limbaugh. Rush Limbaugh said on his show today:
"This is a golden, golden opportunity here now. I know it's frustrating because we had it all in '94, we had the House, if we had just stuck with… things happen. They are what they are and we face a situation we can't change. Look at it as an opportunity. Stay engaged because we're talking about the principles that define our lives and our country for your kids and grandkids and those never grow old because they're based on freedom!"
Certainly there is nothing wrong with expatriate living. If one of the reasons why you choose to live abroad is because you would rather not take the bullshit so be it. As a famous quote states: "You have a right to your own opinion..."

I know the media will keep trying to pin the economic problems on George Bush as long as they can, but they can't hide the issue forever. America gave up it's competitive advantage Tuesday by electing a leader who has vowed to implement the same economy-crippling socialist policies that European countries have. Get ready for more stock market drops leading to ridiculously high unemployment as any job that can be done in China, Mexico, Taiwan, or the Dominican Republic, will be moving there soon.

I also took comfort in the fact that come 2010 after our liberal Congress and president have been fumbling the football all over the field for the first half in a scoreless game, people may come to their senses and put both Houses back in conservative hands and make this criminal we have elected to POTUS do the perp walk with his ACORN buddies.

I have news for American liberals. The Europeans set this up in their financial manipulation for Obama, because he is their dupe. They know with him at the controls they will set economic and leadership policy as Obama is not that astute at anything.
The European caste system is amused at how they put the hired help in charge of pompous America. These bloodlines in Europe consider Obama a mockery.
I had first presumed that the markets would be stable as they were on election day, but now it appears the Europeans are tanking the world markets to screw with Obama so he will do the will of the Europeans when the G 20 meet.
Everyone of Obama's voters is deluded. They either think Obama being elected will make their lives better or Obama being elected solved something. The fact is when these people figure out Obama will do nothing for them and as the problems arise they will then like Jimmy Carter flee him claiming to have never voted for him.
There are tens of millions of Americans not cheering, but furious over this election theft. Some will work to put in the Electoral College last gasp of making Obama show his Birth Certificate and expose him as a fraud as Justice Souter has mandated that Obama answer Phil Berg's petition by December 1.
I'm working in God's Grace in what needs to be accomplished that can not be made public as I will not tip the hand in what legally will be done.
I will make one point which seems to be calling and that is this:
Those deluded Americans will find as time passes they will long for the day George W. Bush was their President again and not their messiah Obama.

Wed, 11/05/2008 - 23:51 ET by Old EuropeA more perfect union with 55 million against Barry?! I get it: As in the same vein of good ole communism, let's cast aside all dissenters and present a perfect union without any gainsayers and haters. We are all just a perfect 52-48 % divided union. Dissent? I don't see any, do you? 48% against Obama? That's nothing. We, the People's Republic of America, are all united behind Maobama the Great Leader.

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 00:36 ET by iveseenitallDon't pay any attention to those 55 million people behind the curtain. They don't count. WE are now finished bashing President Bush with the most vicious personal attacks on a leader in the history of America. WE are finished attacking Vice President Cheney, Senator John McCain, Governor Sarah Palin, Karl Rove, et.al. WE will never stop attacking and lying about "conservatives". But WE now want "a more perfect union". So YOU must obey. After all, WE are "liberals".......PUKE!
NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Thu, 11/06/2008 - 00:36 ET by Captain RepusI would prefer a less than perfect union, thank you very much.
I dreamed last night that I was surrounded by a population of toga-clad citizens, most of whom were blond-haired, blue-eyed scandanavian appearing people, none of whom appear to be more than mid-twenties in age. Roman style structures house all and fruit trees abound.
Suddenly a very loud blaring horn sounds and all of the beautiful people slowly walk to a large rock-like structure with an opening through which dozens enter without saying a word. As suddenly as it started, the large opening closed with those who had entered never to be seen again. The remaing group slowly returned to their sterile white housing and resumed their blissful frolicing to the sounds of harp music.
I awoke from this nightmare in a cold sweat this morning and opened my newspaper to the headline 'Obama wins - Change is Here'
Please pinch me.

Thank Goodness It Was Barack Obama
Thu, 11/06/2008 - 01:01 ET by Rush FanRace wasn't supposed to be a factor in this election.
Why Barack Obama, himself, stated in a FoxNews Sunday interview in April that race would not be a factor in November's election.
A Gallup poll in June stated: "A large majority of blacks, 78%, and an even larger majority of whites, 88%, say the fact that Barack Obama is black makes no difference in terms of their likelihood of voting for him for president."
Yet when Tom Hanks endorsed Barack Obama for President (see attached video) Hanks brought up the race card: "In November, America will have redefined the Republic. Around the world, to friend and foe alike, America will live up to its promise when Barack Obama takes the oath of office... “a country that once said that people of his skin color were only 3/5ths of a human being.”
Now that Barack Obama has won the presidential election, everyone is talking about his race. Even Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said enthusiastically today: "As an African-American, I'm especially proud because this is a country that's been through a long journey, in terms of overcoming wounds and making race less of a factor in life. That work is not done, but yesterday was obviously an extraordinary step forward."
Now I realize that Barack Obama's election as the first black president is a historic event. But an obvious question is if a black Republican, such as Michael Steele, Maryland's first black lieutenant governor, had run for president would liberals, the Media, and Hollywood types such as Tom Hanks show the same enthusiasm and support? Would they consider a black Republican President a historic event? Would blacks vote for Republican Michael Steele in the same numbers they voted for Democrat Barack Obama?
Finally, if electing a black, regardless of his beliefs, character, principles, and associations is important, then we are fortunate that Barack Obama was the one. Afterall, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan could have been the black on the Democrat ticket running for president.
