NBC Airs Hit Piece on Todd Palin, Sarah Palin's 'Abuse of Power'

Photo of Brent Baker.

Network polls put McCain-Palin ten-plus points behind Obama-Biden and Brian Williams introduced Thursday's NBC Nightly News by asserting “some senior Republicans are getting edgy at the prospect of a long up hill climb in a short amount of time,” but Williams and other journalists may not be so confident of an Obama victory -- how else to explain NBC's decision to air hit piece Thursday evening about Sarah Palin's husband Todd? Or maybe it just reflects continued animosity.

With “Palin abused her power” on screen with a picture of Todd and Sarah Palin, from Alaska reporter John Larson related that in the “troopergate” probe “state investigators noted in their report the pressure Todd Palin used to try to get his brother-in-law fired, and that Governor Palin’s firing” of public safety commissioner Walter Monegan, “who resisted that pressure, was an abuse of power, though she did not break any laws.” Nice caveat there.

Larson framed his story around how, horror of horrors, “state employees testified 'he had significant influence' on government affairs, that he occupied the Governor's office at least half the time.” Larson intoned, as if it were some kind of new and damaging revelation: “In fact, in this, his first nationally televised interview” Monegan “told NBC News Todd attended the Governor's closed cabinet meetings.”

The MRC's Brad Wilmouth corrected the closed-captioning against the video to provide this transcript of the shallow story on the Thursday, October 16 NBC Nightly News:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: Almost hard to believe that it was just six weeks ago that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin introduced herself to the nation as we watched there at the Republican Convention. Since then, her husband of 20 years, Todd Palin, has received increased attention. We still learn more about him each day. And tonight our report from NBC's John Larson.

JOHN LARSON: When Todd Palin appeared on the national stage, he was unlike any political spouse ever. Blue collar, commercial fisherman, champion snowmobile racing. The rugged “first dude,” as he was called, became part of the campaign, even making solo appearances like this one in Maine to thank the National Rifle Association.

TODD PALIN: Sarah and I are very active outdoors and hunting.

LARSON: But as investigators here in Alaska began looking into whether Governor Palin abused her power when she tried to fire that state trooper ex-husband of her sister's, new details emerged about Todd Palin. State employees testified “he had significant influence” on government affairs, that he occupied the Governor's office at least half the time.

WALTER MONEGAN: He would just be sitting there along the wall along with all the other staffers.

LARSON: Did it seem odd to you?

MONEGAN: It did.

LARSON: In fact, in this, his first nationally televised interview, Walter Monegan, the Alaska public safety commissioner fired in what has become known as “Troopergate,” told NBC News Todd attended the Governor's closed cabinet meetings.

LARSON: Did you ever voice it, say, “What’s up with this?”?

MONEGAN: No.

LARSON: How come?

MONEGAN: It’s my boss's husband, and what could I do to challenge that?

LARSON: State investigators noted in their report the pressure Todd Palin used to try to get his brother-in-law fired, and that Governor Palin’s firing of Monegan, who resisted that pressure, was an abuse of power, though she did not break any laws.

MONEGAN: I’d die for her, but I won’t lie for her.

ANDREE MCLEOD: Todd is pretty much behaving like a lobbyist.

LARSON: And when Andree McLeod filed suit against Governor Palin last year for using private e-mails to conduct state business, she accidentally discovered Todd Palin was not only deeply involved in state policy, but traveled at state expense to visit with special interests.

MCLEOD: That's a lobbyist. That's not, you know, a spouse serving tea.

LARSON: Yet historians say look no further than Ladybird Johnson advocating for civil rights in the 60s or Marilyn Quayle attacking liberal values in the 90s. Vice presidential spouses can be influential. The only difference this time, he is a him. John Larson, NBC News, Anchorage.

Twisting the Report

state investigators noted in their report . . . that Governor Palin’s firing of public safety commissioner Walter Monegan, who resisted that pressure, was an abuse of power

This is a blatant lie. The report (by a hired attorney, rather than 'state investigators') found that she abuse her power by letting Todd try to get Trooper Wooten disciplined. The report was supposed to be for the purpose of investigating the firing of Monegan, but its finding as to that was that Palin acted within her power. The finding of 'abuse of power' has no direct connection to the firing of Monegan.

Interestingly enough, the only recommendations in the report have nothing to do with the firing either. The relevant recommendation, in fact, was to change the personnel privacy statutes so that people who complain about troopers could find out what, if anything, happened with their complaint.

...you beat me to it.....

...you beat me to it.....

Finding also said "although

Finding also said "although Walt Monegan’s refusal to fire Trooper Michael Wooten was not the sole reason he was fired by Governor Sarah Palin, it was likely a contributing factor to his termination as Commissioner of Public Safety."

So it's kinda like saying "We know the refusal was part of the reason, it's not enough to really get anyone in trouble."

Boa

So why all the expense. No finding of guilt. No recommendations of penalties. This was a big waste of time, but I am not surprised the media is trying to make something out of it. All of the reasons to investigate and harangue "that one", and all they focus on is Palin???

To make Palin look bad?

To make Palin look bad?

You're probably right Bal,

But isn't it the media's job to investigate skeptically all candidates. To date, I have not seen them try to make "that one" look bad. Why is that?

Pelosi makes herself look good ?

Compare a woman with different fate--Nancy Pelosi.  In the Charlie Rose show, how Nancy the smiley woman was selling details and a plan.  Why does she smile so much and act so triumphantly in time of this national crisis?  The evils in those smiles.  Yet, see how Sarah Palin was smeared, and spoken of.

it is my woman instinct to talk about a tale of two camps. my post as Elle with the following:

Yes, a top woman woman selling a plan to spend 63 billion dollars on

'people'. Bloated with smiles. Poor Bush. how miserable he always seems. it's called Pelosi Power. Butt Nancy, if you did not do it in the past 8 years, why do we trust you now? 1) you  said: 'don't know' to every question, how this crisis come about? 2)  your talks full of cliche, and jargon, 'heart attack, and cancer' too. lots of specifics which are called laundry list. 3) you have no memory of what happened. no answer on 'crisis'. yet, you're still all smiling.

another blog called her  'A sophisticated lady' ?? hoohoohorrid Dem! always an upper hand in selling. Some americans luv sweet talk..here 63 billions for the people..for the people..for you, for you. for the future. Isn't it too little, too late when you and the Congress did nothing or everything to a detrimental effect? Republicans are too easy prey. A smily Pelosi off the hook !! Is she off the loop? What a talkie, talkie for the past 8 years now  keeps brushing her hair with her hand on tv screen...like that woman holding a phone on chatline when she smiles. Mrs Pelosi, wipe off your smiles in time of this humongous crisis? ..Behaviors very unbecoming...only Democrats call you 'a sophisticated lady'..selling snake oil, yes!!

Mendaciously Smug Media

And NBC is abusing its power of a free press.

NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN are not permitted to be viewed in my home along with PBS. They are so stupid to lose their viewership and their revenues to one-sided politics.

As for as I am concerned they do not deserve this country.

some people don't deserve this country!!

Correct !   i read those bloggers at Marketwatch comments site.  It is run of course by the Wall Street Journal, the 'community' blog hosted by someone with a very middle-east name, and then full of aliens who are traders apparently, many can't even write a language properly but they're here to fight us.  the way they talk so freely under the sun here in USA but full of verbal attacks and mean streaks, all the time wishing the US government to go down the drain !!!

Credibility problem?  All the banks run, the government switches.   Earlier generations trusted each other well  because those were good citizens.  It must be generation decline.  Look at those around us.  It's not good enough that Obama looking cool and calm.  It's his peoples and those around us being shitty and outrageous.  Recently he said to his crowds:  'don't be cocky'!  Telling enough.  Cocky is an understatement.

For he and the democrats spread more bad influcences and stronger messages than the US government.  If you let those blogger running subversive campaigns  on websites, plus their bringing in global attack on the US government.

Who would need other countries to run an American presidential campaign?  OBAMA is doing it.  American people fall prey to all these attacks from within.

The rich Jewish America propping a presidential campaign with OBAMA, an obscure Black guy.

No wonder the mainstream media are of the same voice because their  owners are rich Jews.  Yet they still blame the Nazis.  See the outcome now, even Adolf Hitler would go crazy too here in America !!  however, inter-racial marriages will make us a little jewish or black someday.

For now and really, these  people trash others with their past hurts, and yet they suppress the good ones with their victim concepts and claims. They can also blank out your memories too when they choose to and when they insist on their talks.  Do you wonder why so many Alhzimers here in America???? Yes, I now understand what the Liberals stand for !!!

LARSON: State investigators

LARSON: State investigators noted in their report the pressure Todd Palin used to try to get his brother-in-law fired, and that Governor Palin’s firing of Monegan, who resisted that pressure, was an abuse of power, though she did not break any laws.

I believe the report found that the firing of this bozo Monegan was completely within her rights as he was an at will employee. The supposed abuse of power came only from her husband Todd Palin (a private citizen) pressuring the Troopers to fire Wooten. Further more the crux of this tax payer funded investigation finds that no legal penalties should be imposed on the Governor for any of this. What a politically motivated waste of time and money.

The msm are in

The msm are in desperation.

They know the real internal numbers.

Simple as that.

I don't know if anybody has been able to stand to hear CNN tonight...but let me tell you it is past infuriating....they are going to eat it on the 4th with all this BS.

Rollins and Gergen past nobodies have sold their souls, I haven't liked either of them from day one close to 20 years or more ago.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

Yeah, BT, and I'll tell ya

Yeah, BT, and I'll tell ya -- it's not Palin's abuse of power that I'm worried about. It's Joe the Plumber's that really has me scared. I'm just soooo glad the msm is on top of that Plumber's case, and is digging deep for any sewer-like material that can be flung at him. If that guy ever buys his plumbing business and begins to make more than $250,000 a year, there's no telling how he's going to abuse his new-found power. Who knows -- he might even begin to imagine himself as "a boss" with the absolute power to hire --- and even fire employees. That's abusive!

Keep it up msm. Protect us with your keen, to-the-point investigative reporting. Good job so far. Look at how much so-called dirt you've been able to rake up on Palin and Joe. Yeah, yeah, I know you're disappointed in the tiny bit that you've been able to collect so far on Obama -- but give yourselves a break here -- he's almost perfect, so we understand. But keep digging. Maybe he'll slip up sometime in the future -- perhaps Nov 5 or so.

Yeah

And Hillary was chopped liver!

If MSM was objective,

If MSM was objective, liberals would have to figure out new methods to win any political offices.  Without the MSM in it's current form, they would win none.

Hey, NB'ers...In contrast to this hit piece, check this out...

Amazingly, this also comes from NBC...It's about Sarah and her baby son, Trig. It's great!

Too bad NBC can't bring themselves to do more of this...

"...peace is the highest aspiration of the American People. We will negotiate for it, sacrifice for it, we will never surrender for it, now or ever." President Ronald Reagan, January 20, 1981

Touching

As a parent of a child with "Special Needs", I'm thrilled with her offer of advocacy when she gets to Washington. When Sarah mentioned this in her acceptance speach I was amazed and my heart swelled with emotion. Our children need all of the love support and advocacy the we can give them.

DITTO

Same for my grandson. The country needs some leaders that identify with normal everyday Americans.

Masochists?

I sometimes wonder how the people on this board can stomach watching these clowns day in, day out. In the immortal words of Lamar in "Revenge of the Nerds" - "Wormser, haven't you had enough?"

Missing Smarts Media

First, Sarah Palin was cleared of any illegal activities. Also Sarah Palin was cleared of any wrong-doing in firing someone over budget issues, who served at her will.

And the finding that Sarah Palin did not reign in her husband is bull. Why? Because Todd Palin had a constititional right to complain to state officials about someone he thought was a theat to public safety and possible to his own family.

Todd Palin did not lose his Constitutional right to file a greivance just because his wife was govenor.

Todd Palin did not lose his Constitutional right to file a greivance just because the cop in question was an in-law.

Todd Palin did not lose his Constitutional right to file a greivance just because someone thought his wife should have kept him out of state business.

And most of all, Todd Palin did not lose his Constitional right because NBC thinks that is how it should be.

So, here and now I challenge NBC to explain how Todd Palin lost his Constitutional right to file a complaint, through normal channels, to serve notice that he felt someone was a public safety risk. If they cannot, then I challenge NBC to explain that to the thousands of soldiers who died for Constitutional rights to be upheld. And if they do not explain any of this, well, you know how to change the TV channel off of NBC.

Everything that was done

Everything that was done was appropriate. With the insubordinate actions of Moneghan with respect to the budget, one wonders what else occured that caused the Pallins to remain fearful of the ex brother in-law. From all accounts, he was a blustering, threatening individual who let everyone know that he couldn't be touched. If he had launched off on a tirade and killed or maimed someone, everyone would be wringing their hands saying what a shame it was that XYZ happened. Without the committed support of Monaghen and in light of his other insubordination there was no other recourse that to persue his removal personally.

If Monaghen had been acting in a professional manner in the first place, there would have been no need for the Pallins to get personally involved in the Trooper's firing. The Trooper's actions and threats would have been enough to cause his dismissal.

I thought ...

I thought Monehan resigned? That he wasn't fired? My recollection when this first started was that Palin was trying to reassign him to a different job (b/c of what he was doing behind her back - i.e. going to DC to ask for earmarks when she didn't want any, etc.) and instead he resigned from his position.

Am I completely wrong here?

Memory is right ...

Palin never fired Monehan. She was reassigning him and decided to resign instead -

On July 18, in response to Monegan's comments, Palin released a statement:

I do not interfere with the day-to-day operations of any department. Former Commissioner Monegan was not released due to any actions or inaction related to personnel issues in his department. We had hoped the former commissioner would have stayed in state service to help fight alcohol-related crime. We offered him the position of executive director of the Alcoholic Beverage Control board and, unfortunately, he turned it down.[56][53]

Could it be experience?

I saw this outrageous hit piece on Todd Palin, and noted the irony.

The man his wife fired described how Mr. Palin sat in on closed Cabinet meetings, though he was not quoted as saying that he had any influence in them.

A woman described how he used state-owned transportation to represent the Govenor in meetings, describing Mr. Palin as a "lobbiest."

NBC implied that Todd Palin had an unusual amount of unauthorized power in his wife's Administration.  But as I listened to his critics on TV, it dawned on me that the description could just as easily have fit someone that NBC is much kinder to . . .

Hillary Rodham Clinton

She, too, sat in on Cabinet meetings, and was even put in charge of developing a national health care plan, which she did in secrecy.

She, too, represented her spouse at meetings, using Federal transportation to come and go.

But, ironically, her campaign and the MSM proudly touted these  behaviors as EXPERIENCE.

Not only that, but these behaviors qualified her as the "most EXPERIENCED candidate" among the many Democratic candidates . . .  including Governor Bill Richardson, who had served as a Congressman, US Ambassador to the UN, and Secretary of Energy, before getting elected in New Mexico.

Hmmmm . . . .
