In suspending his campaign to deal with the bail out bill before the House and Senate, John McCain canceled his appearance on tonight's Late Show with David Letterman, a program to be recorded today in New York City. The show is normally produced at 5:30 PM EDT, but MSNBC reported it was to be taped at 4 PM today.
Minutes ago, the Late Show Web site replaced John McCain in the “Tonight's Guests” list with the far-left ranter/McCain-basher Keith Olbermann of MSNBC.

I believe McCain would do well to ignore what is going on in DC and continue going after Obama in a big way, as I see him (thanks to fifty + years of guv'mint edumication in this nation) as having the steeper hill to climb to win this thing.
The last thing he needs to do is align himself with Bush and this hideous bailout-plan-from-hell, as I sense the public outrage against this lunacy growing hourly.

September 24, 2008 - 22:50 ET by celatorGood points, and I am not at all at ease with the bailout, either. But since the roller coaster is already moving, I'd like to see McCain and company come out swinging at Obama's dilly dallying (even for this cause). Hit Obama's campaign with a right upper cut followed by a slambusting left hook. Tactically speaking, of course. But he won't and, yes, the media will probably frame McCain very negatively ASAP. I an anxiously awaiting the "now that we are here" comments from both sides. Wish I were running that campaign.. ;+}
The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?
Dave,
September 24, 2008 - 22:02 ET by Indiana JoeI dunno if I'd characterize this as "reaching across the aisle." Not yet, anyway. But maybe showing "statesmanship" and "leadership," which wouldn't be all bad. I mean, McCain's brought the idea of really leading back into the debate, big time. He's a senior senator, after all. And he's taking his responsibility seriously, and showing leadership.
Obama's "40 days until we have to deal with this" is a phony response. Any new president takes office January 20th, there's nothing he can do until then... except be a senator, which McCain is doing. Is it a "crisis," or isn't it? That's the tack the McCain camp should take, I think.
IMO, the real crux of the biscuit here is what the media does with it, and how it's perceived by the public. If (if? HA!) they try to flame him on this, will it back-fire, like the anti-Palin campaign did? Or will it stick, and make him look like he's dithering. Best outcome? It gets fixed, McCain can claim credit, and he shows up on Friday, apologizing for being late due to some "unfinished business." SHACK!!!
I hope McCain's advisors are thinking along similar lines.

September 24, 2008 - 17:17 ET by TheSterEXCLUSIVE: LETTERMAN MOCKS MCCAIN CANCELLATION
Wed Sep 24 2008 17:41:58 ET
David Letterman tells audience that McCain called him today to tell him he had to rush back to DC to deal with the economy.
Then in the middle of the taping Dave got word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric. Dave even cut over to the live video of the interview, and said, "Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?"
Earlier in the show, Dave kept saying, "You don't suspend your campaign. This doesn't smell right. This isn't the way a tested hero behaves." And he joked: "I think someone's putting something in his metamucil."
"He can't run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?"
"What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!"
Developing...
David Letterman's racist, homophobic, American hating cocktail
September 24, 2008 - 17:41 ET by Lame CherryAfter reading what Letterman was ranting about, CBS should suspend Letterman as his true cocktail crowd rhetoric was coming out.
David Letterman literally called all old people suffering with dimentia nuts in his line,"I think someone's putting something in his metamucil."
Considering Senator McCain admitted to being broken during torture in Vietnam it is reprehensible for Letterman to even hint about Mr. McCain's capacity. It is akin to having Letterman going into an ER and telling women, "I think someone put Viagra in your tea to turn a man on like that".
Letteman then went on to denegrate all women by stating, " Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?"
Women are now second string and people loosing their life's savings because Barack Hussein Obama BLOCKED with Chris Dodd and Hillary Clinton the McCain bill S-190 and cocktail crowd Letterman who hates women, the elderly, children and America is having a fit because there are more important things in life the Dave.
I ask EVERYONE to tell all their family, especially those with ratings software to shut Letterman off for the next year. Drive his ratings into the cellar where he inhabits and watch either Kimmel or Leno if you have to watch unfunny liberal television.
Remember this is the Letterman who ranted that Sarah Palin was to be giving condoms out to her children so they could have sex.
Of course Letterman was going to have on Olbermann, the last time he had on Dr. Phil who slapped him around the stage for saying the horrid things he was about Gov. Palin's children.
Well David Letterman you didn't get a Palin fetus to hang over your mantel in terrorizing Bristol Palin and you won't have a dead John McCain to mount either for terrorizing him.
Enjoy your Olbermann though, because you are the same putrid creatures.
God help that child you fathered and is around you daily. He deserves better in life than the festering boil of hatred you are.
PS: Hey Dave, how about having me on please. Unlike Rush Limbaugh or Barbara Bush or John McCain, I won't sit there and be insulted, but instead knock all of your teeth out the first time you mouth off. I'll even make it legal old man and give you the first two shots on me. Toss in your pansy Olbermann, heck you can even invite Al Franken and I will bust all three of you as you are disgusting pariahs like Barack Obama and as you are all bullies you deserve the playground treatment of yore.

Olbermann did bring up a good point. If Fridays debate is delayed and one of the others is canceled, wouldn't it be interesting if the VP debate is the one that is cancelled.

McCain Challenges Obama
September 24, 2008 - 18:17 ET by MSD6McCain challenged Obama to ten townhall style debates all over the country. Obama ducked them all. Now McCain wants to fullfill his senate duties and Obama and the Democrats say McCain is dodging Obama. Give me a break. Just once I'd like to see the Democrats accept responsibility and put country first.
You're absolutely right,

Letterman Is A Jerk
September 24, 2008 - 19:16 ET by ejpFor years I have found Letterman increasingly tiresome. He has always been the frat boy who never grew up and never showed a trace of mature adulthood in his life. Refusing to marry the mother of his child after living together for some 15 years now is a classic example of frat boy behavior in action. And then he increasingly grew more shrill and leftwing. The night he was rude to O'Reilly and said he was 60% full of crap, I found myself shouting back, "That means by your standards, he's still 40% ahead of you!" The butt-kissing of Olbermann. But to pull this after McCain tried to be statesman (and did SNL send up Obama for cancelling his appearance there because of Hurricane Ike????) is finally the time for me to say enough. Every old Letterman tape I have from a decade ago is going out in the garbage and that includes even his tribute to Johnny Carson because I can not stand the sight of this overage juvenile delinquent any longer. He is a disgrace.

September 24, 2008 - 20:21 ET by SchnikeysAnother moronic move from John McCain.
Suspends his entire campaign, only to work on a spend-thrift "solution" to the current economic crisis which will likely only result in a Dem-dominated final product where GOPers tried but could not get a word in edgewise.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is the mark of a man who lacks an incredible amount of foresight, even when he's been in the Senate for 20 years. The American people can see this, and are thinking negatively of it, as evidenced by a full one percentage point drop in the polls (averaged together, can be viewed at www.realclearpolitics.com)
He is in this whole campaign for a good time and not much else. He suspends his campaign and gives up what precious opportunities he has- his rationale being that he's "willing to put country first"- and thereby demonstrates that he is incapable of keeping his priorities in order. This man is not fit for the presidency- with Palin or without her.
There is nothing that John McCain can "do" by suspending his campaign and yelling obnoxiously in the Senate for a few days, only to find that the congressional dems have brought earplugs.
In a race of two fools, the one who least hides himself is the one who loses. John McCain is being quite loud while tacitly revealing that he does not have what it takes.

McCain's move
September 24, 2008 - 20:38 ET by TheAssessorYou're most likely a whole lot smarter than I am, but as 'Average American' it sounded like the right thing to do to me. McCain has something votes, money and applause can't buy.. honor, and that's what I heard. He has my vote, hands down.
Upside Down
September 24, 2008 - 21:08 ET by rammingspeedMcCain's move was necessary. If the bailout measure doesn't pass, the economy goes down the tubes. Period. When he goes to Washington, he'll deliver the republican resistors and he'll do so by telling them that their jobs are on the line. You let people go broke - really broke - and you are dead.
McCain has the opportunity of looking like the saviour if he brings the republicans on board and the deal is made. People will see him as being politically savvy and willing to sacrifice his chances for the presidency by putting the country first.
That doesn't mean he'll win the election - everything has been against republicans from keeping the White House for years now - but he'll have done the right thing.
Schnikeys, you're looking at this upside down.
Upside down?
September 25, 2008 - 23:38 ET by SchnikeysReally, he's had quite some time to do shape the hearts and minds of his fellow GOP members and, to what would have been fruitless results, the Democrats.. Why couldn't he have "gotten Republicans on board" a while ago? Even if he has tried to do that in the past, what makes him think that it's going to make any difference now?
I'm less concerned about him doing "the right thing" now than I am about him letting somebody who's ten times the tax-and-spender he is take the Oval Office with a Congress full of 'crats. Perhaps it's just me, but this seems so much like a staged move while the reality is that it is highly unlikely he will be able to undo years of irresponsible trust that the public put into two hulking government giants by using some mysterious power to woo over the majority.
If he wants to help, he should learn to multitask.

You aren't alone in this country with your views...I agree for the most part, but heck when it comes to McCain I have been in the minority here anyway...matters not to me...this is all a political stunt...like they all do, this is just so obvious...he'd better hope it works, because it seriously puts me off...Sarah or no Sarah...
..and he wonders why his poll numbers are going down...

Evenin' bt. Let's face it, McCain is a doofus.
September 24, 2008 - 22:13 ET by R D HelmIt almost appears he is trying to lose this thing.
The last thing he should do is return to DC and have any association whatsoever with this hideous (and not to mention unnecessary) bail-out plan.
If Bush wants to reward Paulson and his Walll Street loser cronies with a trillion-dollar check from us taxpayers, fine, but I think McCain should stay as far away from that as he can.
I bet Sarah would have never pulled something like this.

September 24, 2008 - 22:29 ET by bigtimerCome on Dave...surely you jest..McCain is not going to stay away..why, he is going to save the day again like he did with this war and the surge... he's awesome my friend...(sure hope you got the joke there, wink, wink...oops, another joke)
By the way...I will not blame the President for this whatsoever...he made a pretty good speech tonight as far as I am concerned, he warned about this long ago with Fred and Fannie ect...people intentionally looked the other way, the FBI also needs to look into congress...in fact they may want to start there.
Just a penny of my two cents...lol.

Letterman's A Crybaby
September 24, 2008 - 21:12 ET by rammingspeedIf anyone had any further doubts, David Letterman is a hate filled left wing loon with a wicked temper. For him to bring Olbermann on under these circumstances shows him to be a no class jerk who is now running a late night left wing political show.

September 24, 2008 - 21:29 ET by celatorA few years ago I was watching Letterman, and the thought struck me that, essentially, he does the same show night after night. He was wasn't very funny even the first time, let alone the thousandth time. He strikes me as a very lazy performer with nothing remotely interesting to add to the national dialogue. So I stopped watching him, permanently.

The real reason
September 24, 2008 - 21:29 ET by JayJay123He prepared material to blast him and Palin and won't be able to do it now...
Obama's crying cause he's been preparing his lines and doesn't want to forget them.
Obama's confusion of what
September 24, 2008 - 21:44 ET by celatorObama's confusion of what to do in this instance--debate or go to Washington to do his job as a Senator--is interesting to watch. He's like a kite trying to fly in the wind with no tail attached.
His behavior illustrates for me how very scripted he is. The script written for him reads "DEBATE FRI NIGHT. BE THERE." He can't find the words, "Do the right thing and go to Washington and act like a Senator." So he essentially does nothing.
And that's how he would be as President: useless and dangerous at the same time.

September 24, 2008 - 22:51 ET by CTIt's time for McCain to wise-up and stop being a stooge for aholes like Letterman. There is nothing clever or to be gained by these appearances, but it still leaves one with the feeling of being pissed-on for supporting McCain.
