In back-to-back stories on Monday's NBC Nightly News, reporters displayed a disparity in the use of terms applied to describe the criticism by John McCain and Barack Obama of each other. Up first, Kelly O'Donnell described how McCain “asserted that Obama claims he has stood up to fellow Democrats, but hasn't.”
In the second story, Lee Cowan played a clip he set up as showing how Obama “outright mocked what he called McCain's No Change Express” and after the soundbite (“You can't just re-create yourself. You can't just reinvent yourself. The American people aren't stupid.”), Cowan called that “a new bluntness on the stump, one his running mate Joe Biden fleshed out across the lake in Wisconsin today.” Following Biden, Cowan warned: “Then there was that new McCain TV ad touting his partnership with Sarah Palin and her record on wasteful spending in Alaska, something one spokesman called a flat-out lie.”
From Kelly O'Donnell's story on the Monday, September 8 NBC Nightly News:
KELLY O'DONNELL: ...Today McCain tried to appeal to voters beyond party labels and asserted that Obama claims he has stood up to fellow Democrats, but hasn't.
JOHN McCAIN: Senator Obama told the extreme left what they wanted to hear during the primary and now he's telling you what he thinks you want to hear.
O'DONNELL: Advisers tell NBC News they studied tapes of Governor Palin's speeches before she was chosen and decided she could effectively deliver a line against Obama.
SARAH PALIN: He said he's for change. But in Iraq, change happened and that's a great thing for America, Senator.
The next story began:
LEE COWAN: This is Lee Cowan with the Obama campaign. We're in Flint today, the Illinois Senator outright mocked what he called McCain's No Change Express.BARACK OBAMA: You can't just re-create yourself. You can't just reinvent yourself. The American people aren't stupid.
COWAN: It's a new bluntness on the stump, one his running mate Joe Biden fleshed out across the lake in Wisconsin today.
JOE BIDEN: Name me a single issue that affects your life from jobs, to health care, to education, to energy, any of the big ticket items where John McCain and Sarah Palin disagree with the President. Not a joke now.
COWAN: Then there was that new McCain TV ad touting his partnership with Sarah Palin and her record on wasteful spending in Alaska, something one spokesman called a flat-out lie....
Cowan proceeded to get into past Palin comments about the “bridge to nowhere.”

September 9, 2008 - 11:38 ET by Dan The Man 2I love the smell of burning leftist in the morning. Obama going down. I know we have it in thebag when the left is out of facts, even the ones they make up. You have no cogent argument so therefore you are running scared.
Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.
something one spokesman called a flat-out lie....
September 8, 2008 - 20:56 ET by superconWe won't tell you who said it .Only that it was said by some anonymous "spokesman".
High ranking sources say that although NBC has demoted Matthews and Olbermann they still are swimming in Obama's pool.
Victory in Iraq.
Liberals suck.
McCain for Preznint.
The "One" - He (she) said it, so it must be true.
September 8, 2008 - 22:43 ET by mom_roxsc - caught that "one spokesman" as well. Funny how Cowan didn't divulge any proof to backup that statement.
What's the difference between Barack Obama and Sarah Palin?
One is eye candy while the other kills her own food.
Obama
September 8, 2008 - 21:26 ET by WR JonasWow ! He has become Blunt. Now if he can muster some principle and show some spine he may be getting somewhere.
But , I doubt it. He's all about words and saying things. He never means anything he says. The few times he has actually allowed the public a peek at the real Obama , he immediately recants it.
I just tried to view a Youtube clip a friend forwarded and it has been removed . He is a deceiver and a phony. All hot air and pride.
Or as we like to say here, all hat, no cattle.

DEMO MORPH TIME (again)
September 9, 2008 - 12:13 ET by reelman46DEMO MORPH TIME (again)
Most
every presidential campaign we see the democrat (secular socialist)
candidate “come out smoking” until about the end of July…then all the
fantasyland fairness free-lunch tax-the-other-guy pacifist positions
begin to be challenged. Then their lofty poll numbers start to decay.
Class warfare business-hating socialism is not an easy sell.
Voters know reality. Democrats never do. Now we see a totally
unqualified charming #1 radical liberal melting down. The socialists
can’t handle it. Their lib-media diaper changers tried so so hard all
summer to push Obama 24-7. Now we see Obama suddenly on Fox, suddenly
crawfishing on his economic tax-vote-buying baloney proposals so
“wonderful” all summer…now more “may” and such waffling yak instead of
sticking firmly to his summer positions. Call is reality, call it
pandering, call it moderating. I call it lying. Principles do not
change that much that fast.
Klinton did much the same when he crawfished on his middle class tax
cut he spoke of on the campaign trail. You think Welfare Reform would
have had a chance under Klinton without the Republican congress
pressuring him so much? Any chance of a balance budget either?
Does anyone believe (especially with a democrat congress) that Obama
would actually cut a dime of taxes for the top 75% of wage earners?
Suddenly “the surge” succeeded “beyond our wildest dreams”? Beyond the
democrats' dreams for sure. Left to them we would have left a
bloodbathe
and taken the money to grow the gov-ment (buy votes) for the next
elections. Its what they do. They lust for every dollar spent by the
military. Its what they do.
As far as Obama…go air up your tires, ACORN organizer and stop wasting
that air trying to dupe voters.
(Did I mention the democrats have sent 30 lawyers-loons to Alaska to
dirt dig? Its what democrats do instead of talking issues)
