Neuharth: Olympics Beat Naziism & Communism, Now Ping-Pong...

USA Today founder Al Neuharth suggested in his weekly column for the paper on Friday that, as the 1936 Olympics in Berlin preceded the rise of the German democracy and the 1980 Olympics in Moscow preceded Russia's move toward democracy, the Olympic games this year in Beijing “will bring 1.3 billion closer” to the end of communism. In the “Other Views” below Neuharth's column, Foundation for Defense of Democracies journalist in residence Claudia Rossett scoffed at Neuharth's naive romanticism which discounted the role of America's efforts:

Progress in Germany and Russia had nothing to do with the Olympics, and everything to do with the U.S. fighting for freedom in two global conflicts: World War II and the Cold War. America didn't win by playing ping-pong.

Neuharth had contended:

Nazi Germany hosted the Games in Berlin in 1936. Now that country is one of the world's proudest democracies. Communist Moscow was the host city in 1980. Now Russia has moved close to true democracy, although it's not quite there yet. This is not a prediction that communism will disappear from China quickly. But betcha the Olympic Games will bring 1.3 billion closer to that goal. So China and the world will win. Ping-pong might even become a global pastime.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

An excerpt from Neuharth's August 8 column, “Why China will win more than ping-pong

....Some sarcastic sportswriters say the only gold medal China is sure to win is ping-pong (table tennis). That's the country's national pastime,  à la baseball in the USA. It's actually a fun game to watch, because the little white ball hit with a tiny paddle travels up to 80-100 miles per hour.

Most important, China will win much more than medals. What the host and other countries get out of these Games is a closer look at one another. The good and not so good. But a better understanding. The Olympics historically have aspired to be above politics. Athlete-to-athlete and people-to-people.

A butterfly farted before

A butterfly farted before the 1936 and 1980 Olympics and is the real reason for freedom in Germany and Russia.

Or is it that the Olympics caused war to break out, which means that Olympics are eevil?

Which one is it, you dumbass Neuharth?

Please force yourself to not respond to anything using Obama-speak.

Ask the People in Georgia!

Just ask th epeole in Gerogia who are bieng bombed by Russia what a good job the Olympics did there!

This BS that Negotiations and Good Will Games makes a difference in the Communist world is so bogus it's digusting!

Just like the Islamofacist, they only thing that they understand is he who has the bigger gun and is WILLING TO USE IT is the winner!

Bomb IRAN NOW before it's too late!

The farcical Olympic truce

You mean nations don't observe the "Olympic Truce" after all?  Oh, for crying out loud...

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing gt thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner.  May the Beiing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!!  USA!!!

Do you think

bho was confused at to why Russia was bombing one of our 57 or 60 states...and was he even sure if he had been to that one?

Nephew What??

Well, I'll just leave to your post. What??

Can't get any sarcasm past Mandrake

When the Russians get to Atlanta let me know.

Think Again

The author of the most recent edition's "Think Again" piece in Foreign Policy might argue a point or two with Mr. Neuharth.

It wasn't the Olympics that brought down Hitler; that took lots and lots of BLOOD.

Nor did it do much for Mexico.  Just before their Olympics, the Mexican government whacked quite a few unruly student protesters.

I'd argue full democratization happened in South Korea in spite of the Olympics, not because of them.

He may want to recall how the Games in Moscow were marred...and how the Soviet Union fell in spite of the Olympics, not because of them.  (If the Olympics destroyed the Soviet Union, how come they were still raising hammers and sickles in Seoul for medal ceremonies eight years later?)

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing gt thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner.  May the Beiing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!!  USA!!!

Yes... The Magic Of The Olympics!

And then there was the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics, the first and only Olympics held in a Socialist country.

How'd that work out?  Tons of "democracy" were dropped on Sarajevo and Bosnia-Herzegovina.  Just ask President Clinton.

I'd call Neuhrath an asshat but he's more like what comes out of the Obamahole.

RRAM Tough!

Germany is a Democracy

Germany is a Democracy because we a) kicked their butts into the stoneage, b) didn't let the Soviets take over all of Germany and c) rebuilt them after the war and kept troops there so they wouldn't get any smart ideas about going back to being Fascists.

The Olympics had zero to do with Germany's Democracy.

Neuharth will be proved

Neuharth will be proved right if we go to war with China, lose thousands of American lives, kill a few million Chinese, bomb every one of their cities, then spend billions of dollars rebuilding them.

Correlation and Causation

Neuharth has a point here.  If I remember my public school history education correctly, here is what happened in 1945.

Following the Normandy invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, and Patton's march through Africa and Italy, Hitler suddenly remembered that Germany had hosted the Olympics and was overcome with such goodwill that he surrendered.  Oh, and he also committed suicide because he was worried about being sent to Guantanamo Bay and being mistreated by the Bush Administration who pees on the Constitution.

Do I have that correct?

P.S. That was sarcasm.

P.S.S. After watching Montenegro tie Hungary in water polo, I definitely have caught Olympics fever.  To remedy this, I'm drinking lots of orange juice and getting plenty of bedrest.  And tomorrow I plan on getting a Bob Costas haircut.

 <insert witty signature here>

A great water polo moment

Speaking of Hungary and water polo, NOTHING tops the great water polo moment of all time: the USSR vs. Hungary in 1956 in Melbourne.  I wonder if there is still blood in the pool from that match?  :-)

And really, what was Hungary's problem?  The USSR had just intervened in Hungary in the name of social justice!!! Those ingrates should have been THANKING them!!!  :-)

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing gt thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner.  May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!!  USA!!!

Neuharth must be coming out to try and Save his Paper

If anyone has their Pulse on the history of the Nation.....it AIN"T Newharth.   Headlines reflecting this particular world "view" won't help sell the USA today.....sorry, go find a new Headline....

Hey, Neuharth, I got a HEADLINE suggestion on how to Sell  some USA today papers....

VICTORY IN IRAQ     (give that one a try, bird brain)

The Republican Revolution will not be Televised

Olympic Delusions of Grandeur?

These older guys in the MSM invented this template that Jesse Owens was some type of millenial figure that rendered Hitler's visions of a master race moot--this view has now become a cliche of history. However, the truth is that Hitler believed in the "master race" as much after the Olympics as before, and fear and memories of the vast Soviet army murdering and raping their people on a unprecidented scale had much more to do with the German move to Democracy than Jesse Owens. And even then, half the country moved to Soviet Socialism.

I love the Olmpics as much as anyone, but c' mon!

You are right.  I love the

You are right.  I love the Jesse Owens story as much as anyone.  Inflicting embarrassment on Hitler was truly great!  BUT Owens didn't stop Hitler from invading Poland, et. al, in 1939 forward.

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing gt thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner.  May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!!  USA!!!

I think you folks are being

I think you folks are being a little hard on this fellow. I don't see this as some sort of systemic bias. But rather one poor man's descent in to madness. Perhaps the onset of Alzheimer or a brain tumour. Have some compassion.

Compassion is finite

My pool of compassion is very, very, very limited.

ESPECIALLY with people who claim that modern-day Russia is close to "true democracy".  Yet, oddly, We don't hear much from Medvedev.  We DO hear a LOT from PM Putin though.  Surprised?

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing gt thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner.  May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!!  USA!!!

Unsane

I think you have ignored the point I was trying to make. It's quiet possible the man is losing his mind. Given recent statements..including the one you quoted..wouldn't you agree it's possible?

Mandrake, you disappoint me

Negative!  I read and thoroughly understood your point!  Go back to my first sentence, though, to see my specific reaction to your point...

By the way, if Mr. Neuharth is right, I guess Russia will be fully democratic about 10 years or so after the Winter Olympics in Сочи (2014)...right???

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing gt thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner.  May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!!  USA!!!

Unsane

Fine, have it your way.

BTW, did you make to any RUSH concerts on their summer tour? I need to say just for the fun of it that I actually met them when they were just starting out. It was in a small club called the Gasworks on Yonge St. in Toronto. Then they became RUSH.. and I can't afford tickets :(

Snakes and Arrows 2008!!!

I did, and I flew to the other end of Canada to see them, to Alex Lifeson's home province!  I saw them in Vancouver on 29 May.

Sounds like you got to meet the band even before Neil took the drums for them.  I was thoroughly bummed to hear about John Rutsey this past May.

The Olympics are now under way in Beijing.  May the people of Beijing get thoroughly sick of hearing The Star Spangled Banner.  May the Beijing Olympic Committee run out of U.S. flags for themedal ceremonies!  USA!  USA!!  USA!!!

Rush memories

I met Rush personally after a concert in Greensboro, NC when I was in high school in '79.  It was the Farewell to Kings tour and they were not yet superstars.  With festival seating in those days, I was on the front row.  After it was over, I and the other members of our high school rock band The Othermothers waited for them at the stage door.  They walked out and were on the way to Charlotte in a van.  I told Neil that I was a better drummer and he goodnaturedly said, "but I'm making more money."

My boys and I went to the Snakes & Arrows show in Dallas last summer.  We all decided that the new Rush doesn't have the old great Rush sound.  Most seems to be 4/4 and not the changing meter of the older stuff.  Anyway, Rush is still one of the greatest bands of all time.

Stupid is as stupid says

I think Neuharth is trying to increase his circulation by cornering the market on rose colored glasses with miopic lenses.

 In typical fashion,

In typical fashion, fascist such as Neuharth says presto change-o.. history is as I say it happened. And why do you ask?

This type of gibberish spouting does make you wonder if he in fact has taken leave of his senses. The Olympics!? Honestly, it may need to be pointed out to him publically how wrong he is.

But again, in typical fashion, if it makes him feel good to say crap like this, and it makes certain numbskulls feel good to hear crap like this, how wrong is it? So goes the progressive thinking. And this little speech by Neuharth sums up the democratic party's thought process. "It makes us good to imagine that this is what the Olympics did, so it can't be wrong." And you (Conservatives)  are mean spirited to say that it is wrong.

Peace through overhyped athletics

You know, the 1984 Winter Olympics were held in Sarajevo, and we all know what a paradise that is today.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Ping Pong my A$$

As the world watches China and the "games", Russia has invaded the Free Republic of Georgia, is killing her people, is sending war ships to the Baltic Sea, while the head of Georgia is begging for help on CNN, and the WORLD is PLAYING GAMES!

What the hell is going ON? HOW can the leaders of the "Free" world let this go uninterrupted?

The United States and NATO should drop a big something on Russia and get them to knock this crap off.

I am livid.

Russia is allowed to arm IRAN, arm Chavez, talk of sending missles to Cuba agian, and we are PLAYING F'N GAMES!!

PING PONG MY A$$

History is what they want to believe happened

Liberals use history to state what they wished would have happened even if it is 180 out of phase with the actual event. They believe it so it must be true.

Those who have long enjoyed such privleges as we enjoy, forget in time that men died to win them - FDR

So, all we needed to do...

So, the whole solution to turning Cuba or North Korea away from communism would have been to award the Olympics to Havana or Pyongyang?!?!?  Dang.  Think of all the money we could have save enforcing the embargo or keeping troops in South Korea.

What a maroon...

correct me if i'm wrong ...

didn't the 1936 olympics also precede the most destructive event in human history? oops, i guess he forgot that little ditty.

pmohbuck

All I can say to your post is PERFECT!

Teddy gets a playmate!

Well, well, well.

Looks like we found a new playmate to join Ted Turner in the ol' sandbox.

Phelps, 2 for 2, 6 to go...

Yes, but what effect will the US topping the French in the 4x100 Freestyle swimming event have on shutting up trash-talkin' Europeans?

Sorry, I just wanted to interject somehow how awesome that race was tonight. I'm officially hooked on the Olympics again. I didn't think it would happen, but here I am.

Hero

Our athletes are the greatest.

The swimming has been fantastic. Butterfly yesterday was outstanding. The one stroke I could not master.

I was jealous. Athletes are the best. The politics around it should be secondary really. At least as far as China goes.

It is really too bad the Olympics has to suffer.

I even caught tennis today.
