Conspiratorial Dan Rather: Big Oil Will Cut Gas Price to Help McCain

Photo of Brent Baker.

The tree doesn't grow far from the apple. A little under two years after Katie Couric, Dan Rather's successor as anchor of the CBS Evening News, suggested just before the 2006 election that President Bush was manipulating gas prices to benefit Republican candidates, on the syndicated Chris Matthews Show over the weekend a conspiratorial Rather predicted “the people who can affect the price of oil would prefer a Republican” presidential victory, so “watch the price of oil.” Rather didn't identify these people, but presumably he meant Big Oil executives who he thinks can raise or lower prices at their whim. In the “Tell me something I don't know” segment, Rather told Matthews:

Things to watch with the thought in mind many people vote their pocketbooks when it comes to voting for President: price of oil. The price of oil has been high. The people who can affect the price of oil would prefer a Republican presidential candidate. Watch the price of oil. If it goes down, which it may very well it could help John McCain quite a bit.

Matthews tried to clarify: “October surprise?” Rather promised “October or before” and then anticipated “you'll hear the argument, 'listen, we never were in a recession, it was a near recession but wasn't actually a recession.'” Of course, as things stand now, that would be the truth, but in Rather's eyes that apparently would reflect some kind of nefarious scheme to fool the public.

As conspiratorial as Rather, back in August of 2006 CNN's Jack Cafferty wondered “if the oil companies might not be pulling the price of gas down to help the Republicans get re-elected in the mid-term elections a couple of months away.”

My Monday, October 16, 2006 NewsBusters item, “CBS Takes Seriously Conspiracy About Bush Manipulating Gas Price,” recounted (with video):

Although a Monday CBS Evening News story included a soundbite from an expert dismissing the idea as "preposterous," the newscast treated a far-left conspiracy theory -- about how the Bush administration is somehow manipulating the pump price for gas to help in the election -- as credible and worthy enough to deserve a broadcast network story. Citing how the price of a gallon of gas has fallen to the lowest all year, anchor Katie Couric wondered: "Is this an election year present from President Bush to fellow Republicans?" Over a shot of a "GOP: Grand Oil Party" bumper sticker laying on a dashboard, reporter Anthony Mason asserted: "Gas started going down just as the fall campaign started heating up. Coincidence? Some drivers don't think so." The man in the car insisted "I think it's basically a ploy to sort of get the American people to think, well, the economy is going good, let's vote Republican."

Over headlines from Daily Kos and Huffington Post, Mason conceded you can "call the conspiracy theory crazy," but he touted how "it's spreading through Internet blogs and over the airwaves. And a recent poll found 42 percent of people actually believe the Bush administration has deliberately manipulated the price of gas to affect the election."

The Thursday, August 31, 2006 MRC CyberAlert posting, “CNN's Cafferty: Big Oil Lowering Gas Prices to Help Republicans?” reported:

Wednesday's USA Today reported that gasoline prices could be closer to $2 a gallon by Thanksgiving. The paper cited the end of the summer driving season and decreased demand as causes for this predicted decline. Not surprisingly, CNN's Jack Cafferty saw something more sinister at work. Before his daily "Cafferty File" segment during the 4pm EDT hour of The Situation Room on Wednesday afternoon, substitute anchor John King and news reader Zain Verjee discussed this report and cheered on lower gas prices as good news. Cafferty then spouted off the old liberal conspiracy theory connecting Republicans and Big Oil: "You know, if you were a real cynic, you could also wonder if the oil companies might not be pulling the price of gas down to help the Republicans get re-elected in the mid-term elections a couple of months away."

That is sad.  I really feel

That is sad.  I really feel kind of sorry for Dan at this point.  Someone, a family member or other loved one perhaps, should really limit his public exposure.  This is embarrassing and he doesn't even realize it.

I guess we should take his

I guess we should take his word for it, since he's an expert of surreptitious political stunts. What's more underhanded than a so-called objective "journalist" engaging in outright deception in order to rig an election?

However, don't oil prices go down, anyway, during the fall, due to seasonal decline of demand? This is hardly Criswellian prognostication. But if the libs need some sort of fake conspiracy to screech about, I suppose this do in a pinch.

It's just a ploy? Count me in!

OK, I'm naive, I admit it.

Please FOOL ME with lower gas prices, you heartless bastards!

Lowering fuel prices the old fashioned way..

Lowering fuel prices the old fashioned way..

Compliments of a MRC post by Rich Noyes, a few years back Rather, Cafferty, Mathews and clones would be advised to remember a bit more of history here:

First - An old  MediaNomics article in which we are reminded that it is illegal to tap the SPR just to lower prices in an election year. So to help Al Gore, the Clintonistas had to assert that supply disruptions were a major problem:

NBC’s Tim Russert...interviewed Bill Richardson, the Secretary of Energy, on the September 24 [2000] edition of Meet the Press. Russert knew that the oil reserve couldn’t legally be tapped simply to lower prices; the relevant provisions of the law focus on supply interruptions, emergency situations or energy supply shortages. Richardson acknowledged as much at his news conference on September 22, but Russert asked him again: "So, this is not about price. It’s about disruption of supply?"

"This is about disruption of supply," Richardson agreed. "This is to increase the supply. We are not trying to manipulate prices."

One should also remember that said auction was a complete failure. It took many months for the Clinton/Gore folks to sort-of pull it off. The first effort was a miserable failure, marked by unqualified successful bidders - one being a disabled man living with his mom in an upstairs run-down apartment in New Jersey someplace (now where was he going to put 5 million barrels). Also someone, down in Florida, connected to Rev. Jackson supposedly got in on the bidding - and in the end, it was said that the oil was mostly gobbled up from foreign interests. Good job Al.

Second: Let's not forget CNN's [CNN Live Today] interview with Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan on April 20, 2004

..First though, the continued fallout of "Plan of Attack," that is the newly published book by Bob Woodward. He appeared last night on CNN's Larry King to soften the charge that Saudi Arabia planned to manipulate oil prices to benefit President Bush's re-election campaign. The scenario involved a longtime friend of the Bush family, Saudi Ambassador to the U.S. Prince Bandar bin Sultan.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BOB WOODWARD, AUTHOR, "PLAN OF ATTACK": What I say in the book is according to Bandar, the Saudis hoped to control oil prices in the 10 months running up to the election, because if they skyrocketed, it would hurt the American economy.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

KAGAN: The Saudi prince also called into the program to say that Woodward's portrayal was accurate but the mutual interest is not unusual.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PRINCE BANDAR BIN SULTAN, SAUDI AMBASSADOR TO THE U.S.: We hoped that oil prices would stay low because that's good for America's economy. But more important, it's good for our economy and international economy. And this is not -- nothing unusual. President Clinton asked us to keep the prices down in the year 2000. In fact, I can go back to 1979, President Carter asked us to keep the prices down to avoid the malaise. So yes, in our interest and the America's interest to keep the prices down.

Well, at least Senator McCain, according to Rather's snide effort here, is using our own assests to pull us thru, rather than getting favors from the Saudi's and/or attempting to acution off out strategic oil reserves (leaving us at risk) just to get Mr. I tell you, "I'm Green," Al Gore, elected.

This charge is rapidly

This charge is rapidly becoming a parody of itself. Add it to "old people eating dogfood" and "destroying the environment" on the list of standard election-year bromides about the eeee-villll Republicans. What Rather neglects to consider is, how did the skyrocketing of oil prices help the Republicans, with a Republican president taking all the heat for it?

And nice move, to announce this "forecast" after oil prices came down a record amount in one day recently. Of course it will be cheaper by election day. Way to go out on a limb, Dan. It's called a "market correction."

But Rather himself has become a pathetic joke. He should just take his "retirement" gracefully, and get a hobby. Maybe find out about that "frequency."

  I believe these

I believe these 'conspiricy' theories are just covering bases in case the price does come down.  By convincing the gullible that any price drop is manipulation and not market forces then, hopefully, the voters will be angered instead of pleased.  It's very similar to all the warnings the dem operatives put out about how the 'Republican attack machine' was going to savage obama unfairly.  This was to set up the condition where the gullible would not listen to the content of critism about obama but instead focus their attention on the source of the criticism.

um..... well then

Pardon me for overstating the obvious, but gasoline prices are at record high levels.  WTF is he talking about?  If "Big Oil" is in the tank (pardon the pun) with McCain, and if It, the Oil Monolith, can actually raise and lower prices of gasoline at Its own Will -- then It is certainly doing an incompetent job.

And, somebody tell me, how much is this man being paid to utter such gradeschool wisdom?

What an idiot! I thought

What an idiot! I thought Big oil loved Pres Bush and VP Cheney. Hey Dan why wouldn't big oil lower prices to help out 2 of their own. Help Bush's legacy?

THE most powerful President in History

President Bush began with the power to force the Supreme Court to elect him. Then he blew up the World Trade Towers -- and hid the evidence. He single-handedly re-directed a hurricane towards New Orleans. WAIT -- I take that back. He CREATED the hurricane before re-directing it.

Now, somehow, he has been able to manipulate all the oil wells all around the globe, and forced all the oil companies (Venezuela included, by the way) to lower gas prices to get a Republican elected.

You might think this is astounding, but it's the last trick that really shows his power -- he's managed to convince the MSM that this is all true! You know, that skeptical MSM, the one protected by the 1st amendment, the people who say blogs shouldn't exist because we're not trained observers or something? Yeah, that one.

Wow. WARNING: If you see the President on TV, DON'T LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SCREEN. You'll burn your eyes out, or your brain will melt. Well, maybe not, but something will happen -- take it from me, 'cause I'm turning my TV and radio OFF this week.
