Fri, 06/13/2008 - 19:11 ET by motherbeltAside from being sorely missed by all his family and friends, as he certainly will be, as far as his public persona goes, one can't say it any better than Bozell did: The world of journalism is vastly diminished today.
May he rest in peace and may God comfort those he left behind.
Russert
Fri, 06/13/2008 - 19:52 ET by Cool ArrowI wasn't a Los Angeles Angels fan, but Nolan Ryan was an obvious gem in an otherwise classless organization.
That's the best analogy I can come up with to describe Russert at NBC.

Fri, 06/13/2008 - 20:10 ET by FairlightI just want to say that Tim was such a high-quality journalist and he really stood out from the roster on NBC. His skill and fairness is the first thing that will be missed from the news division, besides his presence in life.
What I have noticed is that it is very hard to watch Keith Olbermann doing ANYTHING regarding Tim's passing. It's very distracting and quite a disservice to Mr.Russert's time honoured legacy. I am trying to overlook Keith but the low quality he exudes is just not doing Tim justice and is quite tasteless.

Fri, 06/13/2008 - 20:47 ET by FairlightYou are probably right, BT. As disgusting as it sounds, it's hard not to see inside his transparent soul and see a man thinking about his next big move towards what he calls the "Olbermann Media Empire."

A very fair journalist, and
Fri, 06/13/2008 - 20:41 ET by GregEA very fair journalist, and always looking to get straight information from the interviewee for the benefit of all of us watching. His interviews always interesting. I think Russert was a very class act. His personal politics were his, and he never did bring them front and center to try and expose those to the viewer, unlike so many journalists today who have no shame and cannot just report and interview without trying to frame it for the benefit of their own mindset. He enjoyed news and politics in and of themselves, and it absolutely showed and was great to watch and learn from.
Personally, it appears that he was extremely liked and loved by many, and was someone looked to as an example in the realm of fatherhood and being a son who learned from his father. I haven't read his book "Big Russ & Me" but I have no doubt that it's a great one.
In news, Tim was always interesting, always following up when the questions were danced around, and always wanted to have the interviewee clarify so that you and I got the information, what ever it was to be.
I've watched quite a bit of the news tonight on this, and I have to say it really pulled me in, and hit some emotion I might add, and brought additional realization of just who has been lost. In recent decades and especially in very recent years, journalism has lost it's objectivity and has no shame at all. We all here know that. Tim was the everything they are not, and I, as one of those who enjoy news and politics, know for a fact that a true journalism giant has stepped away from the roundtable.
Greg.......well said!!!!

I actually gasped when I
Fri, 06/13/2008 - 20:51 ET by Cureboy675I actually gasped when I heard about Mr. Russert's passing. What a terrible shock. He was one of the few great journalists in the world. You could tell that he had a great passion for his profession.
The world of journalism lost a giant.
How fitting his life ended
Fri, 06/13/2008 - 21:03 ET by Cape Conservativeat his NBC desk - an identity with which most viewers would immediately associate him. After reading his book, Big Russ & Me, I know his family was very important to him and he will leave a big hole in their lives. God's blessings to all who loved him.
I was extremely shocked
Fri, 06/13/2008 - 21:13 ET by CJK51I was extremely shocked when I learned of Tim Russert's death today. Having lost my father to a sudden, fatal heart attack, too, I can relate to how his family must be feeling right now and wish them comfort during this difficult time.
While I did not always agree with his politics which sometimes slipped into his reporting, he was a true professional and among the few bright stars in the world of broadcast journalism. His NBC colleagues will have to a go a long way to match his level of class and I sincerely doubt any of them is capable of that.
He was a good, honest
Fri, 06/13/2008 - 21:14 ET by celatorHe was a good, honest journalist in an era when there are so few of them.
Most importantly, he was a tremendously loving father, son and husband, and that will be his best legacy.
Rest in peace
Fri, 06/13/2008 - 22:21 ET by KC MulvilleIn the ultimate Irish movie The Quiet Man, Barry Fitzgerald tells John Wayne that he was going to head on over to the pub, "to talk a little treason." My dad always loved that line, as perhaps only an Irishman could. To talk a little treason meant you were talking about politics and public affairs, but you were talking among friends you could trust. I'd have loved to talk a little treason with Tim Russert.
Well, he's gone, and a wondeful life it was. I'll pray for the family, especially for his father and his son. God bless the man.
God Bless Tim Russert's family
Fri, 06/13/2008 - 22:51 ET by DelsaWhat a shock. I pray for his family. Tim Russert was a loving man who will be greatly missed.
He loved his father and son enough to write the two books he did.
His legacy is LOVE.
God rest his soul.
Thank you Tim for everything.
Sunday's will never be the same.

Fri, 06/13/2008 - 23:27 ET by JayTeeNothing against the Man himself, but his Job was in TV, and the TV guys are/will soon be (IMO) forcing his Ample Video Archives upon us..... in hours of MSM Air time. This would not happen for others given the same Circumstance, but with Zero TV appearances and zero Archive footage. Give the Man some Air time, throw in some Testimonials, and then lets not Dwell upon him the next 4 weeks across the Alphabet Networks, ad Nausem.
Has not happened yet, but I think it's coming.
I remember Tom Landry, NFL Coach, and his Death. I was working out of State, and about 2 months after his Death I flew back to Texas....low and behold, Tom Landry and his Life was playing on the TV....again. They (MSM) were still mourning him......Why ?
They had a LOT of VIDEO footage to go along with the Broadcast. Most Cowboy fans had moved on a few days after the unfortunate Event.
Personally, I hope the mourning process, the Celebration of his Life, doesn't drag out for weeks and weeks on the MSM....ABC alone, or as a MSM Group. Callous you say ? No, I just don't want to be assaulted beyond an appropriate mourning period...by the Media... because he was a Media Man.
He didn't solve world problems, like Regan, he talked about them, and interviewed an Occaisional person who DID solve World Problems. When Congress people pass from this Earth, the Congress has an Appropriate moment of Silence, and then move on to the Days work. Same with Sporting events and related situations....moment of Silence, reflection, and then lets move on.
I could be wrong, but I would venture a guess that in a few days from now we'll still see Tim's face around. It's going to be a very Public thing on the Public airways for awhile, and I'm not looking forward to it.

Huge fan of Tim Russert. Faithful watcher of the Tim Russert show and Meet The Press. Very saddened by his untimely death. Yes he was a great Journalist and deservers much attention. But he is not a PRESIDENT of a country or a young SOLDIER that has given their life defending our freedom. Let us give respect to Mr. Russert who was a wonderful JOURNALIST but please put this in perspective.
Now I'm becoming curious
Fri, 06/13/2008 - 23:42 ET by Cureboy675Now I'm becoming curious about who NBC is going to choose to be the permanent new host of "Meet The Press", one of the few somewhat reputable news programs left in the world.
Of the people currently at NBC/MSNBC, I think the best bet would be Chuck Todd. It looks like he was Russert's protege and was being groomed by Russert for big things over there. I actually like the guy. Plus, he is one of the few at that network whose bias isn't obviously recognizable.
Unfortunately, my money is on an unwise pick like Andrea Mitchell or David Gregory. Or, even worse, a downright stupid pick like Chris Matthews or Keith Olbermann. But I have to believe even that network would be that crazy.

Sat, 06/14/2008 - 01:28 ET by CortillaenI may have disagreed with him on plenty of occasions, but the guy was a completely different sort than the nuts and hacks we see all over the "news" today. The news business is fast running out of people like Mr. Russert.

I do offer my condolences
Sat, 06/14/2008 - 05:06 ET by badger.I do offer my condolences to his family. I know what it's like to lose a close loved one. From everything I've heard, Tim Russert was a good father/family man. I did not know him personally, so I will not act like I did.
I agree with you JayTee. Like another NB member, (can't remember who) stated that s/he was a hardcore conservative, I too, share that sentiment. Whether you liked Russert or not, the MSM will be showing the love of/for their own for quite some time.
I caught Tom Brokaw commenting on Russert's eating habits. A person has to change. Bill Clinton changed his eating habits after his heart diagnosis/operation. I know first hand how hard it is, I had to change my eating habits for high blood pressure.
IMO: Maybe I'm too far right. Tim Russert, one of the great unbiased fair journalist of his/our time. I just didn't see it. I think Russert was bias/left leaning. Definitely for Obama in the white house, but was better at hiding and masking his favoritism than Matthews/Olbermann and others like-minded. I guess partiality is the way of journalism nowadays.
I saw Matthews/Olbermann trying to cry tonight, These two pathetic journalist couldn't even concentrate on bereaving Russert's passing. Both sidetracked for a minute, to knock/rap the Iraq war.
MSM will spend the next 10 days 24/7 reminding us what a hero and a good ole guy Tim Russert was. Try to find MSM giving 10 seconds to the posthumously awarded Medal of Honor recipients. God says the ultimate love and sacrifice is someone who gives his/her own life for the lives of others.
Real Heroes in my opinion.

Tim Russert
Sat, 06/14/2008 - 05:18 ET by UnsaneI just heard about Tim Russert. My jaw hit the floor; I had to log on here to see if I was in fact seeing what I saw on a crawl on my TV...and yes, it is true.
I disgreed with the man repeatedly, but this is the LAST thing I wanted to see happen. (Sure, I remember nearly blowing a gasket seeing him interview Steve Forbes, but this is also the same guy who would give Rush Limbaugh a fair shake.)
Rest in peace, Tim. Meet the Press won't be the same.
