George Lucas, the creator of the Star Wars movies and writer/producer of the Indiana Jones film franchise, has hailed Barack Obama as “a hero in the making,” declaring that Obama, “for all of us that have dreams and hope, is a hero.” A Wednesday Agence France-Presse (AFP) dispatch headlined, really, “The force is with Obama, 'Star Wars' creator says,” reported:
George Lucas has created legendary film heroes like Luke Skywalker and Indiana Jones, but the US director says that in real life, his hero is Barack Obama. Lucas was in Japan on Wednesday to promote his latest film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, as Obama clinched the Democratic Party's nomination for President."We have a hero in the making back in the United States today because we have a new candidate for President of the United States, Barack Obama," Lucas said when asked who his childhood heroes were.
Obama, "for all of us that have dreams and hope, is a hero," Lucas said.
The AFP article -- as posted by Breitbart, by Yahoo and by Google.
I haven't found any coverage of the Lucas remarks in Japan beyond the short AFP item which James Taranto highlighted Thursday in his Best of the Web Today compilation for the Wall Street Journal's online site.

June 8, 2008 - 08:43 ET by BlondeGreat story. It reminded me of a tagline I used here for a while. General Abizaid's reply to the now failed presidential hopeful (yes!) Hillary Clinton:
Abizaid and others testifying made it very clear that the Democratic allegation that Bush has been lying about troop requirements in Iraq is maliciously false. How sweet it would be if these blowhards could be held accountable just once in this life for repeatedly bearing false witness against the administration about the things that matter most!
Clinton, looking through her pedantically professorial reading spectacles, said, "We don't have a military force that is creating a secure environment. Hope is not a strategy."
Unfazed by her empty platitude, Abizaid denied the military (or, by extension, the administration) had ever "misled" about Iraq. "With regard to hope not being a method, Senator, I agree with you, and I would also say that despair is not a method." Touche.
Even more delicious was Abizaid's statement, "When I come to Washington, I feel despair. When I'm in Iraq with my commanders, when I talk to our soldiers, when I talk to the Iraqi leadership, they are not despairing." I hope Americans were listening. It's the mainstream media and naysaying politicians who are responsible for a great deal of the public's "despair" on Iraq.
This article from two years ago frames the current state of the presidential election in an interesting light, I thought.

Hell, Obama can begin to be countered starting in the 2010 midterms, much like Clinton was in 2004.
The damage McCain will do to not only this country, but to the conservative movement itself, will take two at least two decades to overcome, as the MSM will make damn sure the wrecked economy will be blamed squarely on him.

June 8, 2008 - 02:14 ET by CortillaenThis is essentially the same as my own argument against McCain. I'd rather take Obama now than to look back on him in a couple decades as having been more conservative than any modern candidate. Since people don't seem inclined to listen to reason or history's lessons, the only way to stop this eradication of conservatism from the political landscape seems to be giving the country a cruel dose of the alternative's reality. We can watch the country slip away bit by bit while praying for someone to save us, or we can give people a punch in the gut and make them realize they have to save themselves. Either way, the next four years are going to be bad. I just prefer the choice that might make things better after that.

He got a temporary repreive after 9/11 but it didn't take long for the hateful poor-loser democrats and their media to start a 6 year endless smear campaign, destroying any chance of him repeating what he did as Texas governor, bring all sides together to work out issues and restore civility.
Do you think ANY conservative is going to give Obammy a free ride in civility after what the democrats have done to Bush and our party since 2002? In a word, FORGET IT (well, maybe it takes 2 words). We have no intention of getting even, only of getting ahead. I don't think he will be able to completely turn us into a socialist society in just 4 years, and after our citizens see the real cost in our freedoms and individuality of his efforts to do that he will be thrown out in a heartbeat along with the democrat congress in 2012.

June 8, 2008 - 04:17 ET by Schnikeys"Obama, "for all of us that have dreams and hope, is a hero," Lucas said."
I have dreams. I have hope. Neither of which were derived from Obama, or his ways, or his presence, or his ideas, or his political philosophies...etc. My hopes and dreams really have nothing to do with Obama. And despite the fact that I have dreams and hope, I do not view Obama as a hero for me. Nor do I really believe it's necessary for anyone else to do so.
Lucas speaks bunk this time around.
OT: Two aspects of the Star Wars series really ever gained my interest- one being that entertaining "Star Wars Episode I Racer" game for the Nintendo 64 console. The other aspect would have to be most of the parodies of Yoda seen throughout pop culture. Aside from those two things, Star Wars never really interested me.

What can Obama possibly
June 8, 2008 - 06:04 ET by badger. What can Obama possibly offer this multibillionaire? Can Lucas actually/truely know Obama that well? Hero hasn't been in the spotlight that long. People still don't know who Obama really is. Piling on the Hollywood nut-wagon is all. I heard a couple of years back, Lucas donated $175M to his ole Alma Mater USC. For that much money, just build your own school. (Oprah did) Drop in the bucket for this lucky guy. I heard Tom Hanks will receive $50M, in an upcoming Ron Howard film. Must be sweet.
Seems like many of the movies Lucasfilm has had a hand/role in, a lot were box office bombs. Ewoks/Howard the Duck/Radioland Murders/Tucker. Definitely won the Super Lotto with Star Wars/Indiana Jones megahits. The rest of the Lucas filmography is lame imo. Over paid and over rated. This guy borrows from everyone. Nothing original, too many similarities. Lucas says inspired by, yeah right, I don't think he understands the meaning of the word.
Star Wars-- Star Trek/Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers, all rolled into one. I like the first 2.
Indiana Jones-- The Adventurous Treasure Hunter. 1950's genre. Charlton Heston/Gary Cooper/John Wayne, all treasure seekers. Lucas/Spielberg combo is good. Like the adventure movies.
American Graffiti-- Game of Chicken. Let me guess, Rebel Without a Cause. Just another Hot Rod movie.
When I was a growing up, parents weekend ritual was dragging kids to the Drive-in theater. Also watched many movies in the military, hurry up and wait sheer boredom.

George needs to pay closer attention to his own material
June 8, 2008 - 12:46 ET by greenfairieAs an unabashed fan of the SW saga and an unabashed conservative, I just *cringed* when I heard about this. Lucas is entitled to his views and unlike most of you I'm not going to dump on him as stupid and untalented because he says something dopey about Obama.
One of the things I liked about the prequels, and one of the main lessons I took away from them, is skepticism about politicians who promise the moon is a good thing. Obi-Wan had a great line about how politicians cannot be trusted. But here's Lucas acting like a doe-eyed Anakin gushing about the wonderfulness of Palpatine, and look where that led. No, I don't think Obama is an evil Sith in disguise (that would be Michelle Obama), but blind hero worship of a political figure can lead to some pretty bad things, whether it's incompetence or another Stalin.
Hm
June 8, 2008 - 21:28 ET by ChesterBogusYou've missed something there.
Lucas's story wasn't about politicians promising the moon; it was about politicians creating a war and scaring people into voting him into supreme power. He has been on record likening Palpatine to Hitler, Napolean and Caesar. I believe he has also made oblique references to George Bush as well...in fact, I personally believe that Palpatine's dialogue was directly inspired by George Bush's speeches, but that's just me.
Lucas's movies are a surprisingly good political allegory, but they are a far, far left political allegory. It was originally meant to be a commentary on the VietNam War, but a lot of the themes apply to the current Iraq war as well.
I find it funny that a conservative would try to use such a far left movie to support his ideas. Remember the words of Indiana Jones: "Ah, Venice."
Wait, no, it was: "Nazis. I hate those guys." Lucas is anti-right wing.
