Veteran Washington Reporter: Media 'Took Much Too Long' on Wright

“It took much too long for major news media outlets to appreciate the importance of the Wright connection” to Barack Obama, Don Campbell, who spent “nearly two decades as a Washington reporter, editor and columnist for Gannett Newspapers and USA Today,” asserted in a Wednesday op-ed piece for USA Today. The headline over the piece by Campbell, now journalism lecturer at Emory University in Atlanta, asked: “Wright story: What took so long?” Only after “the most incendiary clips...landed on YouTube” were the news media, Campbell observed, “dragged into the controversy holding their noses, but by then Obama had the goal line in sight.”

Nonetheless, Campbell contended “Obama has been ill-served by a press corps that seemingly was mesmerized by the large, frenzied crowds who turn out to see the Democratic rock star.” Indeed, “crowds can be deceiving,” as Campbell recalled: “McGovern, nobody's idea of a rock star, attracted huge and exuberant crowds throughout the fall of 1972 -- on his way to losing 49 states to Richard Nixon.”

Emory University's bio for Campbell:

Don Campbell's 30-plus years in journalism included nearly two decades as a Washington reporter, editor and columnist for Gannett Newspapers and USA Today. He also served as director of the Washington Journalism Center and of a fellowship program for journalists newly assigned to Washington. He taught journalism at Northwestern University, the University of Oregon and Arizona State University before he coming to Emory. Author of "Inside the Beltway: A Guide to Washington Reporting," Don is also a freelance writer and serves on USA Today's board of editorial contributors.

An excerpt from Campbell's op-ed in the Wednesday, May 7 USA Today:

Wright story: What took so long?
The controversial reverend’s 20-year relationship with Obama was left to simmer for a year. In our 24/7 media age, how could this have happened?

....[I]t took much too long for major news media outlets to appreciate the importance of the Wright connection. (Not that they all do yet; the pummeling of ABC News by commentators for raising this and similar issues in the Pennsylvania debate further illustrated how out of touch some commentators are.)

The record shows that publications such as the Chicago Tribune newspaper and Rolling Stone magazine had detected the controversial nature of Obama's church about the time he entered the presidential race, in early 2007. Soon after the announcement speech, moreover, Wright himself volunteered to The New York Times that he had been disinvited to give the invocation at Obama's presidential launch because of the baggage he would bring to the podium. That set off conservative bloggers and talkers, but little or no follow-up in the regular or so-called mainstream news media.

More than a year passed before ABC News' Brian Ross had the clever idea to purchase videos of Wright's sermons to review them. The most incendiary clips quickly landed on YouTube, and the rest is history. The news media were dragged into the controversy holding their noses, but by then Obama had the goal line in sight....

Speculation aside, Obama has been ill-served by a press corps that seemingly was mesmerized by the large, frenzied crowds who turn out to see the Democratic rock star. Crowds can be deceiving: McGovern, nobody's idea of a rock star, attracted huge and exuberant crowds throughout the fall of 1972 — on his way to losing 49 states to Richard Nixon....

AKA "surrounding oneself with yes-men".

Perhaps Mssrs. Matthews and Olberman would be so kind as to draw Senator Obama a bath.

I remember it well.....

It was my first presidential vote. The frenzied students around me were McGoverned out of thier mind. Somehow deep down inside me I knew the real truth, (please excuse what follows, but it keeps running through my mind now) I grabbed my D*** and pulled. The rest is history.

What he is really saying...

Note that the underlying theme here is not that the Wright controversy really has any substance, except to the nutroot right wing Nazis. What he is faulting the media for is not getting this out sooner, so that by now it would simply be old news, and the MSM could continue to get those thrills up their legs without having to worry about any late surprises. To most of those in the media, hating this country is not a particularly bad thing, after all.

Exactly right.  They're not

Exactly right.  They're not interested in the actual story about O-Bomb-a's association with an America-Hating demagogue, they only interested in the story about the story and how it (sadly, to them) hurt their Socialist savior.

thanks for removing any doubt

that you have the least  bit of objectivity and the realization that you have a cup of bitter Kool-Aid in your hands as we correspond.

If you can listen to what Rev Wright has spewed for the 2 decades Obama was in his congregation and not be royally POed you might just as well get your affairs in order and drink up.

Oh and if you do revisit Wright, go see Ayers and then the other clergy he has praised as well as his official bloggers political bent. Oh and then catch up on what Michelle Obama has been saying.

I know, I know. You could not care any less. And I mean that literally. Drink up old chum.

Socialist States of America

I don't understand Don Campbell's point.  Isn't the way the demedia ignored the Wright/Obama connection exactly the way a socialist government-run media is supposed to behave?

The MSM loves the horse race more than issues

In the early stages of the race, all the reporting assumed Hillary was going to be coronated and Obama would eventually be forced out like all the others. On the Republican side, the MSM depicted the race as a civil war. Also, the emphasis was on the horse races in Iowa and New Hampshire. The MSM was chasing the candidates around and hyping the poll numbers. There wasn't much emphasis on issues except when one candidate used one to score points on another. Even then, the emphasis went right back to the effects on the polls.

Our current system has become a popularity contest, especially in the first few months.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Horse Race

The media is force to ignore the issues because they are so out of touch with the "average American" not to mention the "typical white person" that they have no comprehension of how the issues relate to "little people" in between the coasts. BTW, it may be in bad taste to talk about horse race since the only filly in the race had to be euthanized and Senator Clinton may still be very worried.

100 % CORRECT...

Your last line is the most problematic, it is a popularity contest, & why one is popular has little to do with how well they present themselves. Does anyone believe that McCain, Obama, or Hillary were even close to being the best people for President? No way. The media are a problem, but so is the system.

I get the feeling that we will see an overhaul in at least 1 of the major parties. I would love to see some changes. Win or lose, I would love to see the GOP close their primaries in states that are open. People outside of the parties should not have access to the nomination process, it would take the power away from a few people in Iowa & New Hampshire from having as much influence as they do now.

I also would like to see the GOP abolish the caucus system you see in some states, I actually believe that is an un-American manner in which to select a nominee. No one should know who you support unless you tell them.

It is time to make sure the process used by the GOP is one that actually represents the party in a real way. No way in hell John McCain is the nominee if the rules were tightened up to allow nobody except Republicans, no way. I would say the same thing for the Dems, but since they have "superdeligates" (babysitters) to make sure the loons & kooks don't run wild in the party & nominate someone like McGovern. BTW, I know the Dems have been taken over by the loons & kooks, but that is why their party is set up like it is.

Hey if Democrats, egged on

Hey if Democrats, egged on by a fawning media, want to convince themselves that the pedestrian, irritatingly sibilant, slow on his feet, and banality uttering Obama, is a rock star, I say go for it.

Tiny Tim was a rock star for a month or two.

I wonder where HE is now. Tiptoeing thru the tulips, no doubt.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

TINY TIM...

 Jack Bauer,

I hate to say this, but Tiny Tim died  on November 30, 1996 of a heart attack.

He is pushing up daisies, not tiptoeing through the tulips.

Are you sure Tiny Tim wasn't voted off American Idol yesterday?

TINY TIM...

I have watched about 20 minutes total of American Idol during it's run so far, this is season 7? I think...I never watch it.

The only time I saw TinyTim was on The Tonight Show archives. I remember seeing him get married on the show. I believe it is 1 of Johnny Carson's highest rated episodes of all time.

BTW, I did hear Tiny Tim on a local radio show(the KQ Morning Crew-theeee biggest show in Minnesota by miles) & he was a total gentleman, he could laugh at himself, he was smart & witty, & above all, he conducted himself with class. While I may not be a fan of his music, I admire the man as a person. Many people in entertainment could take note of Tiny Tim & learn from him.

One of the funniest moments on television was the national introduction of Tiny Tim on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in.

Tiptoe through the tulips.
