NBC Highlights Michelle Obama's Spin: Talking About Wright 'Doesn't Help Kids'

The Obama campaign has chosen NBC's Today show as the venue to try to move beyond the Jeremiah Wright controversy and a preview aired on Wednesday's Nightly News, of the session to air Thursday morning, showcased Barack and Michelle Obama making their case. While Meredith Vieira apparently did ask Barack Obama why he had not denounced Wright sooner, Nightly News viewers heard Barack Obama boast in response that he had resisted doing the “politically expedient” and Michelle Obama resorting to a plea reminiscent of the Clinton era:

We got to move forward. You know, this conversation doesn't help my kids, you know. It doesn't help kids out there who are looking for us to make decisions and choices about how we're going to better fund education.

Anchor Brian Williams set up the story by relating how “Barack and Michelle Obama sat down with Meredith Vieira from Today on NBC as they try to put the drama over their former pastor behind them.” Andrea Mitchell explained Obama was “clearly trying to move past the controversy over the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, but when pressed, explaining why he didn't denounce his former pastor sooner.”

Mitchell moved on to comments on Wright made by Senator Hillary Clinton, which came in what Williams had described as “an unusual setting” -- an interview with FNC's Bill O'Reilly.

Transcript of most of the story on the Wednesday, April 30 NBC Nightly News:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: We turn now to the presidential campaign. Barack and Michelle Obama sat down with Meredith Vieira from Today on NBC as they try to put the drama over their former pastor behind them. At the same time, Senator Hillary Clinton, in an unusual setting, repeated some of her criticism of the whole situation. Our report on politics tonight from NBC's Andrea Mitchell.

ANDREA MITCHELL: Barack and Michelle Obama today campaigning together in Indiana.

BARACK OBAMA AT CAMPAIGN EVENT: The situation with Reverend Wright is difficult. I won't lie to you.

MITCHELL: Before sitting down for an exclusive joint interview with Meredith Vieira for the Today show tomorrow.

BARACK OBAMA, IN TODAY INTERVIEW: This is somebody who married Michelle and I.

MITCHELL: Clearly trying to move past the controversy over the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, but when pressed, explaining why he didn't denounce his former pastor sooner.

BARACK OBAMA: If I wanted to be politically expedient, I would have distanced myself and denounced him right away. Right? That would have been the easy thing to do, that would be the standard stock political advice. I don't think anybody who watched me yesterday thought I was being calculating because it obviously wasn't an easy thing to do.

MICHELLE OBAMA: You know what I think, Meredith? We got to move forward. You know, this conversation doesn't help my kids, you know. It doesn't help kids out there who are looking for us to make decisions and choices about how we're going to better fund education.

MITCHELL: Also in Indiana today, Hillary Clinton, who was campaigning again skyrocketing gas prices, but criticized Obama for not quitting his church sooner when pushed during an interview with Bill O'Reilly on Fox.

HILLARY CLINTON ON FNC: I'm going to leave it up to voters to decide.

BILL O'REILLY: But what do you think as an American. You're an American.

HILLARY CLINTON: Well, what I said when I asked directly is that I would not have stayed in that church. I think it's offensive and outrageous and, you know, I'm going to express my opinion. Others can express theirs.

MITCHELL: Clinton is courting O'Reilly's viewers, even though he has been one of her harshest critics....

"Talking About Wright

"Talking About Wright 'Doesn't Help Kids'

Sure it does. If it helps to keep you, your husband, and all your leftist social engineering friends out of the White House and executive branch, where they would do even more harm to kids than they've done over the past thirty years.

"It's for the children"

"It's for the children"

Now where have we heard that before? Why, I believe from both the Clintons for the last 16 years. And since it has worked so well for the Clintons with their Democrat followers it is time to pass on the tourch. Now Michelle carries it. Obama soon to follow.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

Come to think of it...

Michelle's spin never fed a starving child.

When a liberal speaks, the truth is busy elsewhere.

Yes, they learned deflection

Yes, they learned deflection well from the last Democratic President who had things he didn't want talked about.

MICHELLE OBAMA: You know

MICHELLE OBAMA: You know what I think, Meredith? We got to move forward. You know, this conversation doesn't help my kids, you know. It doesn't help kids out there who are looking for us to make decisions and choices about how we're going to better fund education.

Dodge, Dodge, Parry, Dodge....

In the words of Iron Maiden "Run to the hills! Run for your life!"

Damn the white man!

Does she

actually think going to rev. wrong's church over these last few years has helped her children? I enjoyed your "dodge, dodge..." comment. :)

Plus, bho needs to know it is "michelle and me" not "This someone who married Michelle and I". My degrees are from "lesser" universities than his and I have know that since grade school.

it is "michelle and me" not

it is "michelle and me" not "This someone who married Michelle and I"

I caught that too, ddm....it drives me nuts when people do that...they think saying "I" makes them sound sophisticated, I guess. I remember hearing a woman pundit (Laura Ingraham? I"m not sure) talking about Lynne Cheney giving a speech and saying it was an honor "for Dick and me." And the woman next to her snorted and said "She's not ever literate!" LOL

Motherbelt, I live in Tucson,

every morning I listen to KNST and enjoy it greatly. HOWEVER, there is a very liberal caller who always uses "whom", even when she should use "who"...drives me crazy. Of course, she thinks she sounds sooooo intelligent when really she advertises her ignorance.

Well, between you and I

Well, between you and I (LOL) I'm fond of the old Lily Tomlin line: "Is this the person to whom I am speaking toom?"

Well, to whom may you'all

Well, to whom may you'all be in refering to in regardance of the intelligent word spoken thereof?

Wow, bad grammar and a runon. I must be of intelligence. Hell, I might be a liberal.

Nope, I still believe in state's rights, strict constructionism, and the autonomy of the individual. Oh well. ;>)

HA!

I was only speaking of that one liberal...or anyone who tries to sound more intelligent by mangeling the language.

I remember it well,

and always had a laugh from that line.

With the dodge and parry

With the dodge and parry comments, all I could envision was Daffy Duck as Robin Hood going through his moves, always ending with his beak upturned. :-)

For someone with an Ivy League education, her public speaking skills stink. Was she going for a record for the number of times she could use "you know" in one sentence? Michelle should look into using Barry's cue card guy for these appearances. At least then she'd only look angry, not stupid and angry.

Thanks

Thanks for that visual!  One of my favorite cartoons from my youth!  I will laugh all day with that one!

So the change the Obamas

So the change the Obamas want is (more) funding.  That's nothing hopeful and nothing new.

I wonder how michelle hussein felt about her chilluns whilst they sat all up in their pews listening to satan's li'l helper jerry yelling,"he was ridin' dirty!!" and gyratin' his private section at the congragation.

We've got to move forward...and back...and forward..and back...and forward...well..you see what I'm saying.

Six weeks ago when the story broke, I'm asking

Where are all the black preachers shouting "This is not the Black Church"

Silence for weeks until Obama got stuck in fooltown.

Now these preachers are tripping all over themselves to stomp on Wright.

OK, it's about time, but I saw all the courage of a bunch of scavengers.

For that matter, where are the white preachers standing up for the Gospel and against the false doctrine proclaimed by this man who claimed to represent Jesus? Were they too afraid of being called "racist"?

Let me get this straight

She wants to help her (and everone elses) kids?
Better education?

What is her education model?
The Sunday school curriculum at Rev Wrights church?
I'm sure that really helped her kids.
She took them there most of their lives.

Yeah, like I really want to trust her judgement on educating 'our' children.

For the kids, bla, bla, bla.

The first person that says 'it's for the kids' to my face had better be prepared to hit the ground on their a**. I'm so sick of that excuse used by the democrats to cover their sorry a**'* I would knock them down and then puke on them.

American Hating Preacher

It is a tad more than a controversy when you attend a church for 20 years and listen to an America hating preacher.

Socialism/Communism

Right, Jerry. The entire story about this "preacher" cannot be brushed aside because Michelle wants us to forget it. It certainly is more than a mere "controversy". This story goes to the heart of what socialism/communism is all about --- victimization used to gain wealth, influence, and power. If you've noticed, the few who run our nation are rich, very rich. Rev. Wrong is very rich. The few have become wealthy and powerful on the backs of the average person and by exploiting the poor and the ignorant. Ignorance is now costing America what it costs all socialist/communist nations. Look at the ghetto, for example. It hasn't taken one step forward in decades. It gets worse all the time. Socialism/communism isn't the answer to any of our problems. Yet is what the likes of Barry, Hillary, and the Rev. are tauting..  The phrase "God Damn America" implies much more than a simple insult spoken by a crazy preacher.

You would think they would have learned from the last election.  Their in control of the Congress but their side has not stop spending like they promised (earmarks are up).  They haven't got America out of Iraq (and the surge worked).

They lied to them again but they go in and drink the Dem koolade like a couple of 5 year olds loking for a sugar buzz.

Wright's church of hate.

How many time in the past few weeks (before Hussein threw Wright under the train) did I hear and read that there was nothing wrong at the church and it was normal at hundreds of 'black' churches for this type of sermon to be preached weekly? Now he's the only low down dirty dog that was preaching racism and hate. I'll accept the first explamations I heard. We know why there is still racism in America. Black preachers keep it alive so they can bleed millions of dollars from the fools, through the church, to their own bank accounts.

Wow. I completely overlooked the money angle again! What you've said makes sense.

"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." - 1st Timothy 6:10

When are we going to get over Saint Obama?

Exactly

"Well maybe it helps kids learn tht being a racist SOB isn't such a wondeful thing!"

Follow up question should've been - so what did you tell your kids about the man who baptized them? What did you tell them about his theories? I'm interested in hearing about how they as parents addressed this.

bias-fighter

To borrow from Bill and Ted (of movie fame, not politics), that is a most excellent follow-up question and I hope someone will use it during another question and answer session very soon.

It does speak to Obama's (lack of) ability to make rational and reasonable judgments and/or decisions.

Since Obama has already demonstrated, in the most frighteningly realistic way, he was naïve and completely unaware of the depth of hate and racism coming from his pastor's lips each Sunday, or, that he was completely accepting of the racism being preached to him, his wife, his small children, and his fellow hundreds of congregates. Either way, Obama is certainly not qualified to make life-and-death decisions about protecting me, my family, my friends, my political opponents, or my beloved country from harm.

Perfect Choice of Words, Except

Michelle introduced an interesting new issue - does anyone in America really want these people making decisions that affect our children? If their judgment led them to this church, what kind of schools will they lead us to? Their beliefs, their association with this man, and their shared (or different) views are all very relevant to the education of the children. For example, should our textbooks be changed so that kids know the white man's governement gave blacks HIV? I agree with Michelle on this. Let's move beyond Wright and get into specifics about the kids. What kind of cirriculum do they envision - teaching kids about homosexuality at age 5? teaching kids about white supremacy? about Wright's version of history and biology (different brains)?

Nice

You've laid the argument out, for all to see.

Education

Funny Michelle should bring up education. Education is a major part of the problem. Barry and Michelle, themselves, are victims of an educational system which has indocrinated many young people with anti-American, socialist/communist leanings. My goodness, Barry himself has admitted to being influenced by Rev.Wrong, who helped "educate" him for 20 years. Within Michelle's "educatiion" lies the genesis of her comment about not being proud of America. What kind of education are we talking about, Michelle? It's ironic that she wants us to forget about the likes of Rev. Wrong and concentrate on "education". They, unfortunately, are too often one in the same.

Blonde

You are so right. And it is infuriating. And unfair. The "educators" do "indoctrinate" the minds of our young. And many years ago they discovered that they simply are not accountable for anything they say. They get in front of a classroom (or behind a pulpit) and begin their act. Rev.Wrong knows exactly what he is doing. He knows the consequences of his words, just as do so many "teachers" in our society. But they simply don't care.  It's despicable. A major educational "reform", which is  hardly ever discussed, but is so vital to our nation, is for our well-educated adults to encourage our young people to think, not to indocrinate them with their negative world views.

Believe it or not, I've known many people like the Rev.Wrong. They get away with their garbage in schools and in churches. Sad.

Understand about your feeling lathered up about the indoctrination of our children by liberals. I hear the results every day and have the hardest time reprogramming back to a center where BOTH sides are logically considered and weighed for merit. The old Pros and Cons checklist approach. Bottom line, though, I shouldn't have to be deprogramming. But, I am.

According to his website, Obama plans to double funding for the main federal support for afterschool programs, the 21st Century Learning Centers program, which will serve one million more children. His "STEP UP" plan addresses the achievement gap by supporting summer learning opportunities for disadvantaged children through partnerships between local schools and community organizations.

And, as Obama has sworn to uphold the teachings and tenants of Black Liberation Theology in every part of his life, will African Centered Education (Blacks are systematically and deliberately oppressed by Whites) be part of this study? Who will investigate those community organizations that will be providing learning opportunities? And what will those learning opportunities entail? Who will be in charge? *raising my hand as a volunteer in my area*

Food for frightening thought.

Poor Michelle

"We got to move forward."

Hmmm. Michelle? Dear? Correct English is "We've got to move forward, or, we have got to move forward." Ebonics in the White House won't fly, sistahgirl.

Can you imagine the horror at a State dinner? Her poor English being spoken to foreign dignitaries? This woman, representing the American woman around the world, and her English is from the ghetto? The translators must already be cringing at the idea.

Even in her recent interview with some big magazine, her use of English was appauling. Proves once again that liberal "educators" will pass the failing students right up through the ranks and ivy league colleges will accept them.

A pro at distraction and deflection already, though, isn't she?

BondPlainBond

Right on. Michelle is what Affirmative Action has wrought. Read, if you can stand it, her "thesis". Talk about poor writing! Yet the woman makes more money and has a better job than most of the white Americans she despises so much. Something is wrong. We all know what it is, yet have been intimidated into silence. Now that silence has brought us to the brink of having the Obamas represent America to the world. Will we ever get back on track to reach our potential as a nation? Not if we take the "liberal" road. Sad.

NEVER, NEVER trust a "liberal"

iveseenitall

Hello there.

I have read her thesis and was shocked when I read about her very handsome salary for her glorified secretarial position. I still can't believe it.

And you're correct, too, about being intimidated into silence.

"We have had too much of white love, the love that tells blacks to turn
the other cheek and go the second mile. What we need is the divine love
as expressed in black power, which is the power of blacks to destroy
their oppressors, here and now, by any means at their disposal." - Dr James Hal Cone, Founder, Black Liberation Theology

But, since this Wright situation has been exposed, and Wright has been more than generous in explaining, in disgusting detail, the beliefs of his Black Liberation Theology-practicing church, more eyes have now seen the lies that have been perpetrated upon Black society for over forty years by many of their own "religious" leaders.

Black Liberation Theology, to my mind, IS the cradle of racism in America and has been since it's creation in the 1960s.

I believe many people see that truth now, too, and will no longer accept the rampant intimidation which has forever changed our society.

The constant focus on demographics, especially in the election process, sickens me. I don't want to be told, year after year, that the South is the Bible Belt, that the West Coast is liberal country, that 65% of the Black men in this county of Mississippi never went to school.

Labeling, Labeling, Labeling. What for? So the candidates can pander and tailor their advertising to a "certain kind" of person? How disgusting is that? I know it makes money and that's the way it's done, but I would have hoped politics, which is supposed to be about every person, no matter how great or small, reinforced the successes of every part of the country while working diligently to improve what's begun, or will begin, in other parts.

Telling people, year after year, that they live in, and their family has always lived in, a disadvantaged area is not good thing. It subliminally drives home a hoplessness that that part of the country will always be that way. While speaking of "hope" and "change" the politicians are, at the same time, robbing some people of exactly those things they're promising by seeking out the "demographically advantageous" votes.

I feel political demographics have contributed to the sickness of racism equally as much as Black Liberation Theology.

Yikes. I've gone off on a tangent. I hope I've scratched the surface of the whole idea. Detailed labeling is not a good thing. Male/Female, Republican/Democrat is all we really need. Nothing else matters. *weak laugh*

P.S. The Rev Dr Eugene Rivers was on MSNBC's Morning Joe today with Joe and Mika. I think they passed up a few commercial interruptions to allow Rev Rivers to continue with his flow of thought. If anyone has an opportunity to find the video clip or the transcript of that discussion this morning, it will be worth the search. The Rev Dr Rivers was amazing to listen to, eloquently expressive, forthright, and strong in his condemnation of Wright's "theories" and the teachings of the Black Liberation Theologists, and so very informative about the everyday Black Church in America.

Rev Rivers was unknown to me until this morning. I look forward to educating myself about the man, his church, and his sermons. He was spiritually inspirational.

old cro, the vouchers point

old cro, the vouchers point is a good one. Over 70% of black parents want school choice, but they still vote for the Democrats who thwart that wish, in numbers over 90%.

I'm sorry, but at some you've gotta scream "What is wrong with you????)

Think of the reason why

Think of the reason why Democrats oppose school vouchers.  It's because the teachers' unions that support the Dems opposes vouchers.  An under-achieving school full of tenured teachers could be emptied by a program that allowed flight to students that aren't being educated.  In case anyone thinks I'm knocking all teachers, let me state that today's liberal society, with parents wanting to be their children's best friends and not parenting, places a burden on the teaching process that falls well outside teaching the three "R's".

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

How we're going to better fund education?

Listen up, Michelle - you are already over funded in the education department and you are producing a defective product.  Our kids need to be able to read and add.  Being able to properly use birth control and learn Spanish are not good measurements for success.  Stop wasting my money.

Disown them! Disown them all!

Obama has said ‘I can no more disown Reverend Wright than I can disown the black community". Does this mean the black community has been disowned by Obama?

I noticed several comments

"where are the white preachers standing up for the Gospel and against
the false doctrine proclaimed by this man who claimed to represent
Jesus?"

I noticed several comments about preachers here not speaking up. They wont. That's because the modern day preachers are too interested in protecting their "rice bowl." They wont do or say anything that might make somebody "uncomfortable" (thanks Rick Warren) and that includes standing up for what's right and preaching the gospel. As a friend of mine told me, he's an ordained minister, after one of his sermons a church member told him nobody likes a gloom and doom preacher. We had a case here in my hometown where a pastor on the city council was told by the city council he could not pray in Jesus' name. It's a long story, but I challenged the pastors and ministers in the area to speak up for him, and surprise, none did. So dont think any of them are going to criticize Wright. As a minster of the gospel I have nothing but contempt for the post modern preachers.

But the fact of the matter is, preachers will be held doubly accountable.

'Whom' is improperly used. It should be who, as it is the subject, not the indirect object, of the statement, and is not preceded by a preposition.

Commas after 'grammar' and 'leaders' (debatable; more a clarity issue than grammatical)

"before speaking" is a dangling modifier, there is no subject in the sentence to whom it could possibly refer. Change to "before you speak."

Change to "When my husband and I..."

In fact, change whole sentence to "My husband and I are always amused when we see people trying to prove their intelligence in this way."

*Whom is indeed incorrect.

The commas in those contexts are not absolutely needful thus not counted as a mistake.

Before speaking is not a dangling modifier because it doesn't have two possible subjects choose from. In my sentence, the subject is an understood you since it's cleary a command form sentence. Your version is more efficient but not necessarily more correct.

*before speaking in front of people who know how to use it. Objects get a "that" while people always get a "who."

*my huband and I

*amuses him and me

Four true mistakes.

I've certainly been guilty

I've certainly been guilty of poor grammar here, but then again I only went to the 10th grade for family reasons, I have posted "my husband and I" many times...hope to remember never to do that again...that's for sure.

Okay, how many errors were there here?

I love learning from others.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Careful BT, it works both

Careful BT, it works both ways...

You should say "My husband and I" when it's the subject of the sentence, i.e. "My husband and I support the Republican party." That would be correct.

But if you are the object of the sentence, it would be "and me." For instance, "The IRS sent a tax rebate to my husband and me" is correct.

It basically depends on whether you would use "I" or "me" if you weren't including your husband.

Sorry, hope I'm not being annoying, but I'm a total grammar nerd and, since you did say you liked hearing about it, I couldn't help contributing....

Hi Jason... Thanks. I

Hi Jason...

Thanks.

I hope at my age after all these years I can remember all of this.

Not being annoying at all...or I wouldn't of asked, all I know is I don't want to worry constantly if what I post is grammatically correct or not all the time...we helped send our son to college, he corrects me enough.

I am... what I am.

LOL!

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Well, it depends, bt...if

Well, it depends, bt...if it's object..it's him and me. The gift was from him and me. If it subject.. it's He and I gave the gift.

I used to tell my kids to take out the second noun or pronoun and try it. You wouldn't say "it amuses I" so it's "it amuses my husband and ME." I forget who it was that said we are trying so hard now, we have the "Between you and I" generation (incorrect.)

We are also being railroaded into pronouncing the t in often, the l in calm, (but not almond), and assorted others. Any day now, I expect someone on TV to pronounce the second L in Lincoln.

I'm quite certain whom is

I'm quite certain whom is wrong.  "those who use poor grammar" is the subject of the sentence.

Yes, the comma thing is not necessarily an error.

True, Dangling M. is not absolutely correct, I now realize. But having two subjects to choose from would be a misplaced modifier, not dangling, no? Anyway, given the implicit nature of the command-form sentence, it presents a similar problem.

Your last three make sense, I found a rewrite of the sentence's structure to be more fluent overall.

Hey, I like this game! It's cool that there are other grammar/usage nerds on this site.

Oops, Candance. I misread

Oops, Candance. I misread and thought you said that "Whom is indeed correct." So my extra explanation was pointless.

You've gotta check out this

You've gotta check out this essay. It's by my absolute favorite non-fiction author, and is basically about grammar as an ideological construct. Totally fascinating. The section about what he says to students who speak in ebonics (but are otherwise "bright as hell") alone could spark days worth of discussion. That part is about halfway down.

Scroll down past the mumbo-jumbo at the beginning. It begins with the phrase "Did you know..."

I caught the that/who

I caught the that/who boo-boo ;-)

My newest pet peeves are the pronunciation ones...like the "often" etc. that I mentioned above. Also, heighth for "height" and the newest one that I've noticed...people saying "fith" for "fifth."

Oh, and we have a Constitution...not a "constootion", our Chief Executive is the President, not the Present of the United States, and we have Social Security, not So-Security.

OK rant over, for now. LOL

There will never be any real

There will never be any real "open discussion" of race in this country until the hateful rhetoric of people like Rev. Wright, who use "religion" as a platform for their political and social agendas, is acknowledged and confronted by people like Mrs. Obama. The Obamas would like us all to forget about Rev. Wright only for their own political expediency.

Obama, Wright.....Moving On

She's right....I think that we need to move on.  Let's have her husband run, lose and work at being a real senator, instead of a campaigner.  The alternative is that he loses, and disappears into the woodwork, like Kerry.  Maybe he can come up with some schtick like Algore.  How about global cooling???

This guy was running for office when he spoke at the Dem's convention.
