No real surprise here: A new study of positive versus negative campaign coverage found, as reported Tuesday night by FNC's Brit Hume, that John McCain's coverage grew more negative as he got closer to winning the GOP presidential nomination.
Meanwhile, while ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscast treatment of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton has become less positive, unlike McCain's mostly negative coverage the two Democrats continue to benefit from a much more upbeat approach: Pre-Super Tuesday Obama had 84 percent positive coverage and Clinton stood at 53 percent, but since March 4, Obama's good press fell to a still solid 67 percent -- more than twice as positive as McCain's -- while Clinton was off a bit to 50 percent. (Factoring in neutral coverage, Clinton earned more good than bad press.)
Citing the numbers from the Center for Media and Public Affairs (CMPA), Hume reported how “McCain's media fortunes have taken a dramatic turn for the worse since early January,” plummeting from “97 percent positive...before the New Hampshire primary” to “just 30 percent positive since.”
CMPA has not yet posted its findings and I can't find any mention of them elsewhere, so I don't know any more than what Hume provided. [UPDATE: CMPA's press release.]
Hume's lead item in his March 4 “Grapevine” segment:
A study of the three broadcast network evening news programs indicates John McCain's media fortunes have taken a dramatic turn for the worse since early January. The Center for Media and Public Affairs says the amount of McCain coverage it deemed positive was 46 percent from mid-December through mid-February. But look at the contrast between his 97 percent positive number before the New Hampshire primary on January eighth -- and just 30 percent positive since.
Meanwhile, Barack Obama's overwhelmingly positive coverage has slipped a bit. Between mid-December and mid-February, Obama received 84 percent positive coverage. Hillary Clinton got 53 percent positive. But since Super Tuesday in early February,
Obama's good press number is 67 percent. Clinton has also dropped slightly to 50.
Breaking down coverage by network: ABC and CBS gave Obama 90 percent favorable coverage; NBC 73 percent. For Clinton: ABC had 68 percent positive, CBS 50 percent, and only 38 percent on NBC. One other note of criticism: Bill Clinton overall was heavy, with the former President receiving just 24 percent positive coverage for his role in his wife's campaign.

Obama's good press number is 67 percent. Clinton has also dropped slightly to 50.

Leon's Advice to McCain
March 5, 2008 - 09:59 ET by Leon1) Stop wearing pounds of make-up. We've seen the liver spots all over your face. We know they're there. You aren't fooling anyone. Take the make-up off! You look absolutely ridiculous
2) Stand behind your 11th wife during every speech. In fact, maybe just let her speak for you. I don't care what her platform is, dress her in yellow and let her jabber. The votes will roooolll in.
3) Take the chewing tobacco or walnuts or whatever it is you're hiding in the left side of your face out. Get rid of it. It's creeping everyone out.
4) Allow Leon to take care of your wife once you go completely senile in the first 1/3 of your term Reagan-style. Considering what happened with that guy's second term, I can't believe we even allow a man as old as McCain to run. Regardless, Mrs. McCain the 11th is HOT.
If you do these things, then the media will love you more. Right now you're just old and creepy and on the verge of falling asleep like my grandfather every second of the day.

Of course much of a presidential election is based on appearance. It's simple human nature. Taller people make more money than short people. Good looking people have more opportunities than ugly people.
That's just the way of the world. I couldn't even pay attention to his speech I was so distracted by his oddities.
Furthermore, everyone already knows McCain's substance. There isn't any. Or at least that's what the screechers on this website have been saying all along.

March 5, 2008 - 10:56 ET by LeonDee,
I still sing his praises. I think he's a great man and he can be a great leader.
But the more I see of him on tv, the more shocking his age becomes. The more real the problems of having a geriatric in the White House.
Again, I will vote for McCain if Hillary gets the nomination. His age is less scary than her power-hungry obsessions. But given the choice, I would prefer to not have my grandfather in the white house.
Leon - you are so Naive -you don't think Obama is power hungry?
March 6, 2008 - 10:23 ET by Dee BunkLeon - you are so naive -you don't think Obama is power hungry? Or what about McCain for that matter? Anyone who runs for President is power hungry. It sounds like you are just being sexist.
Why don't you talk about what issues you care about and how those candidates would handle those issues? You must be far left on abortion if you like Obama - so you should like Hillary over McCain there. You also must be far left on the War if you like Obama so you should prefer Hillary over McCain on that issue. You must like national health care if you like Obama so you should like Hillary over McCain on that one.
Your allegiance seems to be to style over substance big time. You care about who is popular and go with the crowd. Hillary will never be popular among men and you fall right in with the rest of the sexists.
Oh no, Dee, the Obama
March 6, 2008 - 10:31 ET by motherbeltOh no, Dee, the Obama doesn't want the power.....he just wants to fix our broken souls.
Remember when he first started out, he said he didn't know if he wanted to do this, but then he realized how "hungry" people are for a "new kind of politics," etc.
HRC said, too, in her "choking up" moment, that it wasn't about her. Of course it's about her. They all say it's not about them. But they all think that if the "they" have the power, they can fix everything.

Only in "politics" could 47 be considered young. In fact, this is the prime time for men to go into a weird middle-aged crisis and start doing odd-ball things. Not a good age for a President.
Clinton is 60, or a mere 11 years younger than McCain. Believe me, she'd look wrinklier than McCain if it wasn't for the daily botox injections.
Besides, toth are crazy socialists who should know better at their relatively middle-to-older ages... and their idiocy trumps McCain's age anyway.

March 6, 2008 - 10:42 ET by Dee BunkThey can be assassinated, get cancer, be in an accident or thousands of other things. McCain's age and the age of his mother, who is still alive, bode well for him on health issues. Obama's mom died early of Cancer so he's probably more of a risk than McCain.
McCain has also survived much physical and mental stress. Obama has lead a cushy life and hasn't held a stressful job yet.

March 6, 2008 - 10:56 ET by sarcasmoJust getting NEAR the editor-ship of any law school's Law Review, much less being the first black guy to become editor at Hahvahd, is practically stress defined. Think "Paper Chase on steroids," if you have ever seen the TV show/movie. It's a mistake to underestimate this man.
The process of getting on a law review can be quite nasty. Imagine lots of backstabbing in a quest for an adornment on the resume' which practically guarantees tens of thousands of bucks a year more to repay immense student-loans, along with free tuition for a year at many schools. To get this job, Obama had to appeal to conservative students (a few do exist at Harvard, I've heard). Obama's life experience is certainly different from McCain's, but what he has done was not easy or stress-free.

March 6, 2008 - 11:36 ET by Dee Bunkthat's not stress to me. We've all had internal created stress from striving to be they best or trying to do something that we are not talented at. That isn't real stress like being a prisoner of War or even being in a war or being President. Academia is not stress at all - in fact it's the opposite of stress. Everyone I know (with the exception of Doctors during their internships) consider their school life to be the least stressful time of their lives.
I don't deny that Obama is smart. He is. But he has not had any real stress in his life that every single one of us hasn't experienced.
They're 2 different kinds of stress, though.
March 6, 2008 - 11:48 ET by sarcasmoI'm sure the most horrible law school experience isn't anything like as bad as POW torture, but talk to those law review people. Chances are, all of them wanted to be Editor, but just getting on a law review is tough. Editor is a real struggle, and because legal writing isn't an objective thing like math or science, there's a hyperpolitical emphasis on being a really effective BSer. Or writer, depending on how you view lawyers! ;) Anyway, I think we mostly agree on this, I'm just concerned that people sometimes tend to underestimate this guy.
JMR

Yeah - I'm with you on the underestimation part sarc & with Jack
March 6, 2008 - 19:05 ET by Dee Bunkon the middle age part.
I think Obama's very smart and cunning and that's why he portrays himself as a moderate when he's far from it. My point with Leon is that he hasn't had the kind of stress that can literally kill you. McCain has stood up to that kind and so he is not a worry health wise.
Jack makes the good point about the mid-life crisis thing also (up above). I really think age is irrelevant to Presidential qualifications on the upper end. You can be too young but not too old (unless you have visible signs of dementia).
I have said many times that McCain is crotchety and old and has no charisma and that is one of the reasons he doesn't make a good candidate, but unlike Leon, I don't hold that against him and will vote for him. When I say he's too old etc... I'm talking about how it will affect the general public. The public is made up of people like Leon who won't vote for him because he's old and will vote for Obama because he's young and cute and they don't really care about the issues. It's sad.

March 7, 2008 - 12:41 ET by LeonDee,
After seeing what happened with Reagan during his second term, why would we ever want another guy this old in the White House?
Reagan didn't know a darn thing by the time his term was up. Sorry but I'd prefer the leader of the free world not have dementia. Call me crazy.
Leon - dementia & Alzhimers are largley heriditary
March 7, 2008 - 13:15 ET by Dee BunkPeople can have early onset Alzheimer's at age 40-50 and there have even been cases as early as age 29. So Obama could get Alzheimer's and is more likely to get it than McCain if he has a family history of it and McCain doesn't. Did you know that African American's are more likely to get Alzheimer's than White people?
Ronald Regan said publicly that he wanted people to watch him for signs of dementia because his mother suffered from it. I can't imagine Obama doing the same thing. He hides his every position the best he can. You want to write off all old people just because some get sick. You are exhibiting very discriminatory behavior Leon.
Maybe African Americans should not be allowed to hold office because besides Alzheimer's they are also more likely to have high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, cancer and many other things. Of course I don't believe that, but your logic would follow that line.
