Noting presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain “gets good treatment” from journalists, former CBS News correspondent Bernard Goldberg predicted on Thursday's O'Reilly Factor that since the “media like him because he's the one who pokes his thumb in Republican and conservative eyes, mostly conservative eyes,” that's "going to end" and so “as soon as it's McCain against Obama or Clinton the media goes over to the other side.”
In his weekly Thursday appearance with Jane Hall on the FNC show's segment assessing media behavior, Goldberg agreed with Bill O'Reilly that McCain has received favorable press, and then offered his forecast for how the media will turn on McCain as soon as he stands in the way of liberal becoming President:
I do think he gets good treatment. And I'll tell you precisely, I'll you the second, that's going to end: When the campaign starts for real between one Democrat and one Republican. That's when you're going to hear stories about “Is he too old?” “Is his temper such that he shouldn't be President?” The media like him because he's the one who pokes his thumb in Republican and conservative eyes, mostly conservative eyes. But as soon as it's McCain against Obama or Clinton the media goes over to the other side.
Back in 2000, Goldberg penned 'Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News.'

blog, You beat me to
February 8, 2008 - 09:16 ET by msh1973blog,
You beat me to it...I think we all know the honeymoon is going to be short lived. Who cares anyway, do we really expect the msm to back a Republican, even one as liberal as McCain? No!
Yes Mr. Goldberg and the sun
February 8, 2008 - 03:08 ET by ConservativeRexYes Mr. Goldberg and the sun will come up in the East tomorrow, it will set in the West and Democrats will raise our taxes. Revelations all.
McCain is toast, and the MSM will be the toaster.
February 8, 2008 - 03:20 ET by R D HelmAnd the really sad part is, poor old hapless John McCain has not the foggiest inkling of what is going to be coming his way just as soon as he wins the republican nomination. He seems to honestly believe these MSM types really do like him. He is in for a rather rude education.
The MSM is going to dump McCain's sleleton closet out for God and all to see. The scrutiny will be so intense as to be stifling. He will be on the defensive from the word go, and will be burried buy it all right quickly, as I honestly believe he no-longer has the mental sharpness to deal with it all effectively.
But it won't stop there. His age, military service (Vietnam baby killer, anyone?), support for the war in Iraq, his support for the GWOT, and a host of other things I am too tired to get into, including the kitchen sink, along with the tub and a couple of toilets, are going to be flung his way as well. Oh, not all at once, as the MSM will not want it to appear they are ganging up on him, but come it will.
As I posted elsewhere here yesterday, when the MSM is fininished with him, John McCain will not be able to get himself elected dog-catcher in Dixville Notch.
I almost feel sorry for the man.

And don't forget, RD, that
February 8, 2008 - 08:01 ET by motherbeltAnd don't forget, RD, that this will all be going on while they cheerfully ignore everything negative in HRC's past (Politics of Personal Destruction, you know), and build her up into an American Evita...or if it's Obama, they will totally gloss over his complete lack of experience, his Afro-centric Church, and his soaring, but totally empty rhetoric.
Oh yeah, McCain's about to become the Jilted Lover....he's about to become the dutiful wife who worked her butt of to put her husband through medical school, only to be dumped once he had his M.D.

February 8, 2008 - 08:05 ET by Cool ArrowAnd Obama's the trophy wife. Clueless and witless.
Hillary and McCain will be forming the exwives club.

motherbelt,
February 8, 2008 - 22:33 ET by R D HelmHillary Clinton will be portrayed by the MSM as the Virgin Mary for the duration.
And if it turns out to be Obama, and I am beginning to think it just might, he will be treated as a rock star who has done, and therefore could do, no wrong.
Either way, McCain will be left holding the bag in the end.

February 8, 2008 - 05:14 ET by SchnikeysGoldberg nailed it. That's really all there is to McCain's popularity. And here we Romney and Thompson supporters are, kicked to the curb.

Oh, yeah, Bernie's dead on.
You know, I was wondering, when I read the NY Times endorsements, why these newpapers even bother to pick a Republican to endorse. Anything remotely decent that they say about that person is positively pointless; and will be forgotten the moment the two-party race is set. I wondered why they don't just say: No Republican is the equal of (HRC in this case), so it would be hypocritical to endorse any of them.

February 8, 2008 - 08:01 ET by Cool ArrowProblem with big city media is that they are sold on the idea that if you throw money at the beggars they will go away.
Put them in a Sierra Club setting and they will immediately comprehend Mr. Ranger's warning: "Don't feed the bears." The obvious understanding is that feeding the bears makes them stop behabving like bears, foraging for food and fending for themselves.
But somehow the point is lost when applied to humans even though Liberals contend an almost theological dogma of our evolutionary kinship with the animal world.

Not just the MSM
February 8, 2008 - 08:12 ET by ThisnThatDid anyone hear Pat Robertson yesterday? He was doing the MSM's job: "I can't support anyone with that type of temper, and with his hands on the button. He could start WWIII".
Thanks Pat -- now I don't have to read the NYT.

February 8, 2008 - 08:58 ET by KillgraveI think someone will need to come up with a drinking game for all these McCain cheap-shots that will pop up in the media until November:
Reference to McCain's age: drink once
Reference to his health: drink once
Reference to his staunch support to the Iraq war: drink once
McCain's lackluster Naval Academy performance: drink once
Finally, whenever the media runs an audio or a video clip of McCain throwing a tantrum, you have to chug your beer until the clip ends.

February 8, 2008 - 10:43 ET by Adam_MEUh, the media already did turn on McCain. Remember when he started to make nice with the religious right and the press pounced on him? Right after that was the immigration debacle and his candidacy was presumed dead. So he should be prepared for the inevitable 180 this time around.

But then, we're all on the same page with the way the MSM is operating.
What IS great is there are people such as (NB and) Bill O., who stated loudly that his people had collected and saved ALL the good and supportive comments on McCain from the MSM and would be rolling them out as the general campaign got underway and the MSM shape-shifted against him in their coverage/comments.

a. The MSM clearly want a Democrat for President;
b. Polls have consistently shown Hillary beating Romney easily, but losing to McCain;
therefore...
c. The MSM have been rooting for McCain to be the Republican nominee.
Huh?
