NewsBusters.org - Media Research CenterFNC's Brit Hume, in his Wednesday “Grapevine” segment, highlighted the contrast in a glowing a AP review of John Edwards' unsuccessful campaign sympathetic toward his hard-left approach to the race, versus a much less laudatory look by the wire service at Republican Rudy Giuliani's aborted presidential quest. (Ken Shepherd's earlier NB post contrasting of the two AP stories.) Hume noted how the AP reported Edwards was “ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voters' sympathies,” and trumpeted how “Edwards waged a spirited top-tier campaign against the two better-funded rivals, even as he dealt with the stunning blow of his wife's recurring cancer diagnosis.” But with Giuliani, the AP simply relayed: “Once the Republican presidential front-runner, Giuliani suffered a debilitating defeat in Tuesday's Florida primary.”

Hume's lead “Grapevine” item on the January 30 Special Report with Brit Hume:

NewsBusters.org - Media Research CenterThis is what the Associated Press wrote today about John Edwards' decision to drop out of the presidential race. The AP said Edwards was quote, “ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voters' sympathies," adding quote: "Edwards waged a spirited top-tier campaign against the two better-funded rivals, even as he dealt with the stunning blow of his wife's recurring cancer diagnosis."

And here's what the AP said about Rudy Giuliani, quote: "Once the Republican presidential front-runner, Giuliani suffered a debilitating defeat in Tuesday's Florida primary....Tuesday's result,” it added, “was a remarkable collapse for Giuliani...Florida proved to be less than hospitable."

The MRC's Rich Noyes noticed that the AP's dispatch on Edwards which Hume quoted came just an hour after news broke Wednesday morning that Edwards was ending his third-place presidential campaign. The lead sentence of the AP political reporter Nedra Pickler’s gooey 10:06am EST dispatch: “Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voters' sympathies, The Associated Press has learned....”

Pickler suggested Edwards’ far-left platform had become mainstream and accepted, crediting Edwards with promoting “themes” that were “eventually adopted by the other Democratic presidential candidates -- and even a Republican, Mitt Romney.” But Pickler only named one “theme” that Romney has actually used himself, the tiresome election-year cliche of wanting an “end to special interest politics in Washington.”

By contrast, James Taranto pointed out Wednesday in his “Best of the Web Today” for the online page of the Wall Street Journal's editorial page, the AP's Devlin Barrett covered the Giuliani withdrawal in a “straight” manner:

Rudy Giuliani, who bet his presidential hopes on Florida only to come in third, prepared to quit the race Tuesday and endorse his friendliest rival, John McCain.

The former New York mayor stopped short of announcing he was stepping down, but delivered a valedictory speech that was more farewell than fight-on.

Giuliani finished a distant third to winner John McCain and close second-place finisher Mitt Romney. Republican officials said Giuliani would endorse McCain on Wednesday in California. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of the public announcement...

Yeah, we get it AP.

Yeah, we get it AP. Edwards nobly ended his valiant fight; Giuliani was beaten down by his losses and suffered a "collapse."

Good grief!!

Their bias is so ingrained that it just oozes out of their pores in everything.

The rabbit hole.....

I agree its getting to the point of out right absurdity. Its really frustrating that there are still lots of people who think this propaganda is objective reporting.

Typo

"Crappy Showdog Who Couldn't Lead Anyone, Anywhere."

Yep, that's pretty

Yep, that's pretty ridiculous. Although, any time Romney is portrayed in a non-negative way, that can't hurt. But I resent how they leave me, as a reader, interpreting that as Romney being "inspired" by Edwards to adopt the platform. Just because Romney adopted the platform as Edwards did doesn't necessarily mean that he was inspired by Edwards. Give me a break!

Don't you realize that, for

Don't you realize that, for the first time in American history, a Presidential candidate based his campaign on improving life for "the poor"????

(We'll skip the obvious ironies....)

Thank heaven for John Edwards, he got everyone focused on poverty!!!

<sarc off>

Wow, what a man. While

Wow, what a man.

While standing in front of a destroyed building in NewOrleans (while the company he works for is foreclosing on houses in the area), declares there are two Americas. Then going back to his 28 thousand, let me repeat that 28 thousand square estate, with his 30 thousand dollar pool. The man is worth somewhere around $30 million. His “guest house” is 6,400 square feet.

Don’t get me wrong, I think that every one should make as much as they can but, to do it at the expense of doctors (and us in the end) by suing the very people that save lives. By telling a courtroom full of people that the dead girl is talking to him, telling him to screw the doctors! Then turn around and tell poor America how he feels their pain, because “his dad worked in a mill”, big deal!

He told CBS news: "If you're in public life, people will be critical of you because of the way you walk, because of what you eat, because of the way you talk, like this Southern accent I've got. You know, you can't worry about stuff like that,"

No we don’t care what you eat, or how you sound, or how you walk.

What we do care about is how you screw people for a living and then go to the dumb (really dumb people) and tell them you feel their pain, so vote for me! You are the worst of the worst. You have no shame or pride or give a single $hit about this country. Its just a little something for you to do. IF YOU CARED THAT MUCH ABOUT THE PLIGHT THE POOR YOU WOULD donate a large amount of “your” money to the poor. Not ours!!!

You even turned your wife’s sickness into a political event. You know, some people say: what goes around..

I for one am happy that

I for one am happy that this useless piece of crap is gone. I hope he stays gone. Even the socialist dims saw through his BS message of 2 Americas.   Economic Equality=Socialism.

Don't forget that Edwards also sued the Red Cross three times and won unrevealed settlements in each one.

Think of that the next time you see Red Cross or Salvation Army asking for help - your donation could end up paying for a court case and not going to the poor, all thanks to people like Edwards.

I couldn't believe

I couldn't believe the liberal Charlotte Observer's editorial cartoon on Edwards.  He got dropped like a hot potato or is it potatoe.

It's "potato." :)

It's "potato." :)

Edwards

During this campaign we were "treated" to seeing how Edwards made his fortune. It is truly amazing that so many people will fall for an ancient snake-oil salesman in this day and age. Really makes you question the jury system. Can anyone say, "tort reform"?    Sheeze!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"
