NBC Highlights 'Life-Long Republican' Caucusing for Obama, But...

On Wednesday's NBC Nightly News, Andrea Mitchell showcased “a lifelong Republican, who twice voted for George Bush, now canvassing for Obama” as a “precinct captain” in Iowa. In an interview two months ago, however, Monica Green listed Ronald Reagan as the last Republican President with whom she “identified” and, asked whether she'd vote for Reagan if he were running against Barack Obama today, she equivocated as she implied Reagan was too anti-communist: “You mean if he was running against Obama today? Oh my goodness. That's a good question...His views on communism were probably not the view I would appreciate today. I've got a much more global perspective today, and Obama touches that.”

Mitchell and NBC producers hardly stumbled upon Green by accident since the official Barack Obama campaign site features a video of Green as one of its “Republicans for Barack.” In the NBC story, Mitchell cued up Green to explain how she rationalizes to her kids her party change: “In the beginning, they would call me and say, 'Who are you? You raised us to be Republicans. I don't understand.' And I just keep saying, 'Look at the problems in the world, and look at who you think is going to be able to solve these problems?'”

The MRC's Brad Wilmouth corrected the closed-captioning against the video to provide this transcript of the relevant portion of Mitchell's story, from Des Moines, on the January 2 NBC Nightly News:

ANDREA MITCHELL: Barack Obama is counting on independents, according to NBC's Lee Cowan.

LEE COWAN: The Obama campaign says they are energized not only by the size of the crowds, but also their enthusiasm. And they point out that if there are so many people who say that they're first-time caucus goers that are turning out at midnight rallies and early in the morning in this bitter cold, that's a pretty good indication of their commitment.

MITCHELL: All the candidates are relying on ground troops, precinct captains like Monica Green, a lifelong Republican, who twice voted for George Bush, now canvassing for Obama.

WOMAN, RESPONDING TO OBAMA CAPTAIN MONICA GREEN: We haven't fully decided. I think my husband will probably be John Edwards, and I am split, either Edwards or Obama.

MITCHELL, TO GREEN: What do your kids say to you?

MONICA GREEN, IOWA PRECINCT CAPTAIN: In the beginning, they would call me and say, "Who are you? You raised us to be Republicans. I don't understand." And I just keep saying, "Look at the problems in the world, and look at who you think is going to be able to solve these problems?"

From an interview in early November with Campaigns & Elections magazine:

C&E: Who were some Republicans with whom you have identified?

Green: "I thought Reagan was a strong president...I was totally in support of Reagan. He's probably the last one."

C&E: If the 1980 Reagan were running today, would you vote for him?

Green: "You mean if he was running against Obama today? Oh my goodness. That's a good question...His views on Communism were probably not the view I would appreciate today. I've got a much more global perspective today, and Obama touches that."

The link to the Campaign & Elections posting no longer works, but it's posted on the “Seattle for Barack Obama” blog. It's also highlighted on the “Think on These Things Research” blog, which touts: “Commentary, and News on the 2008 Presidential Election with a Pro-Obama Slant.”

I wonder what would have happened...

... if Andrea had said to her "why don't you pass the time with a game of solitaire?"

they sure have quite a

they sure have quite a database of 'LIFE-LONG-REPUBLICANS/CONSERVATIVES-WHO-NOW-LEAN- DEMOCRAT"

All .00001 percent of the US population - not a big database - but a database none-the-less:)

More plants! Honestly, we

More plants!

Honestly, we gotta get more aggressive. We need "ex Clintonistas" telling their compelling stories of how they've "seen the light" and now will vote Republican!

It's the sorry state of the election process that has allowed this kind of crap to go on, and it's a real indictment of the media. They are too lazy to look for verification of these lib's stories. That and they just don't care.

I'm tired of our side playing nice. It has got us nowhere. Everyone says they hate dirty tricks in politics and they hate attack ads. But the truth is going on attack works.

This is by far the most important election in our lives. We cannot allow a communist or a socialist to take power. The Oval is no place for on the job training!

Don't hold your breath, Gary. The MSM is simply not interested in Democrats who have changed their mind and intend to vote for a Republican.

<sarc>Besides, that just doesn't happen, dontcha know. A Democrat-turned-Republican is the political equivalent of a unicorn.

Ms. Green is no

Ms. Green is no Republican.  She is a socialist.  She could suffer dementia.  One look at Obama's voting record tells anyone what he believes.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

He has a voting

He has a voting record????

Now, that's a good one!  lol

Seriously, in one of his goofy foreign policy pronouncements, bambi, said that he would "take care of" those pesky terrorists in northern Pakistan by invading the country!  No, he didn't ask pretty please, may I, from the UN (remember when the drive by's meme was non stop regarding asking the UN's permission - they were mysteriously silent on this pronouncement).  And, of course, he said nothing about asking the host country, Pakistan, if they would permit it.

That's a good one. And of course, Obama is just the one to solve all these global problems, because he will "start a conversation."

Which will no doubt begin with: Yes, America is the most evil country in the world....now how can we win your love back?

I for one am sick and tired

I for one am sick and tired of watching the MSM control this election with crap like this! Passing Monica Green off as a Republican is blatantly dishonest.

And how does a putz like Ron Paul get even a moments worth of coverage while true conservatives (Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo) are never mentioned?

The only reason Fred Thompson gets any mention or air time at all is because he is already famous and the MSM knew they could not smother his coverage. That's why they attacked him so hard right out of the gates when he finally entered the race.

The libs cry and moan about Ann Coulter, but the last I checked Ann wasn't on MSNBC spouting her political opinions and trying to pass them off as news. She is an author and commentator.

Dan Abrams (Sp?) should be fired immediately for trying to pawn Olbermann and Matthews off as serious journalists (Olby's words, not mine...)

All your mindless name-calling aside

Maybe it's because nobody gave any money at all to them? Or maybe it's because they have 0 supporters who are willing to form Meetup groups? Or generate rockstar-like crowds in spite of a self-effacing personality? Or maybe it's because they all have no BLIMP? Or they don't repeatedly-break single day fundraising records?? Or they don't win straw-poll after straw-poll & online-poll after online-poll & text-phone poll after text-phone poll -- often to the hilarious whines of Sean Hannity?? :)

I could go on... Whine about Ron Paul all you want, but we EARN all the coverage we get, and it's often still biased as hell, even if I'm the only one who provides any balance in pointing that particular flavor of media bias out here -- to the point of me spending most of yesterday-AM gleefully-mocking the NB masthead's last ill-fated attempt to mock US! (It's too-easy to be me around here, sometimes!)

As for Coulter, it would have been nice to hear from NON-RINO candidates at CPAC instead of that foul-mouthed rant from her, IMO. Her rant took up the time that "conservative" group had for non-RINOs, though, and that fact is 100% CPAC's fault, not the media's, just as I said at the time.

sorry, news media

But if you want to find actual party-line crossers, I've got bad news for ya... You'll need to look to the supporters of The Candidate Whose Name Must Not Be Mentioned...Good news too, though: Ours are real, and we've got PLENTY!!

Pauleeze!

I'm a libertarian-leaning dude, and I dig many of the views of Ron Paul, but the guy's got blinders on, where foreign policy is concerned, IMO. The world is much smaller than it was 232 years ago; if we don't maintain a global presence and exert influence by taking ourselves (via trade, cultural exchanges, diplomacy and yes, even pre-emptive armed conflict when necessary, which Congress authorized for Iraq, btw) to the world, the world will definitely bring itself to us, and in a manner and time likely not of our choosing. I'd like to vote for Paul, but won't unless he develops a more reality-based foreign policy posture. I will however, vote for the candidate who, IMO, is most likely to stop pouring billion$ down the War on Drugs drain and redirect those resources to fighting the Global War On Islamic Lunatics Bent On Killing Us All and Who Finance a Large Part of Their Operations With Afgani Opium Profits.

Democrats are Socialists! Wake up people!

When will people wake up to the scam. All these brainwashed liberals who's parents grew up fighting communism now adopt these insane positions? Talk to any hardcore liberal and push them on it and ask them their political views and they all want socialism! These people are mentally insane. It is like the world is going mad. Do these people not understand how our country got to be the most powerful and prosperous in the world? Guess what it was not due to the insanity that is socialism!

Huckabee: Raising Taxes OK
The Anti "Man-Made" Global Warming Resource

PT, they may be insane, but they're more likely dupes.

They're buying into what they hear  the MSM preaching on TV about the tragedy of no healthcare for the poor and that we need the government to become the caretakers for all those people who don't want to work for a living.  We should have affordable insurance for all and good paying jobs for people who want to work.  We could get the former by eliminating the lawsuits from someone stupid enough to crush a cup of hot coffee between their thighs and the latter by punishing the businesses hiring illegals.

The reason I say the people are dupes is that they believe the preachers of this new wave of socialism are actually going to be there in the trenches suffering the same deprivations they are.  The people who jet around the world preaching about AGW aren't going to skip that tropical vacation poising as a conference and when they need healthcare, they aren't queueing at the end of a 2-year waiting list.  They aren't going to sacrifice their protection from a lawless society.  They don't carry guns, their bodyguards do.  They don't worry a whole lot about actual crime inside their gated communities or restricted high-rises.  They drive by or fly over the world they want their dupes to live in on their way to their bully-pulpits.  They preach about increasing taxes while they shelter their income in foreign accounts.  The dupes buy into the sermon, but they don't realize it will be a two-tiered system.  The preachers will stay in their ivory towers enjoying what the dupes will have to give up to pay for the preachers' guilt.

How right you are...I work

How right you are...I work with a woman (in her early 60's) who just loves Obama. She thinks he will save us from ourselves, and yes, she would love to see socialized medicine. She went on and on yesterday about how she met and shook hands with McGovern. It was the highlight of her life.

Please show the lady

This article, and see what she thinks. I liked it very much -- pity it took him so-long to come around to liberty, though...

An educated man can't stay

An educated man can't stay stupid forever.

A lot of people don't realize it was the cigarette companies who push for the warning labels that read, "Smoking cigarettes can lead to smoke-filled rooms where you may accidentally approach and talk to a member of the opposite sex who is less than attractive."  The original warning, "Smoking causes Cancer." was a little too strident for them.  I don't smoke, but I have noticed you don't see the original warning very often on a pack of cigarettes.  I wonder if there is anyone over the age of 5 who doesn't know you shouldn't smoke, besides teen-age girls, so I question if the warnings are still necessary.  Speaking of such, I know not to put my hand under a running lawnmower.  I still standing on the top step of a stepladder, but I have a one-handed deathgrip on something solid.  I know my hot coffee is hot and that melted cheese's heat is in direct proportion to its liquidity.  I've also heard if you drink a gallon of milk a day and you're older than ten, you might get stones.

She should find

She should find a sixty-year-old friend in Canada and ask them what they think of socialized medicine.  These people who call for the government nanny-state don't realize what it will do to healthcare.  First of all, we can't pay for it at the current rates.  If I'm a doctor and I have a choice of filling my waiting room with people who are going to pay me 10 cents on the dollar for my costs, do I get to turn to my staff and say we're cutting your pay to 10% today, contact my insurance and say my malpractice is 1/10 the going rate for these patients, and so on?  No.  So I want my office filled with paying customers.  I refuse to take the state and federal supported patients.  They go on waiting lists at the places that will take them.  Try to force me to take everyone and I go sell cars for my brother-in-law.  The pay is about the same, as I don't have a staff to pay, a building to finance, malpractice fees, etc, out of no profits.  The doctors who remain in the system are those who are dedicated to the profession and they will burn out quickly, or those who aren't qualified to sell cars.  I want one of those doing heart surgery on me.

The real story in dimocrat

The real story in dimocrat politics today is why is billary still running when she is likely to post a third place in Iowa?  In other words, will billary drop out of the race after posting such a miserable showing?  How much wasted time and money has the billary campaign made in Iowa?  Will this wasted effort hurt future state campaigns if the candidate remains in the race?   Who will billary throw her weight towards if she decides to drop out?  Will New Yorkers finally get a senator that is going to do her job - if that's what she did when she wasn't running for the presidency?

This is a story that the drive media is avoiding like the plaque.  They will post any and all goofy inane stories, like the one above, in an attempt to avoid this one.

If the "shoe were on the other foot," that is, if the Republicans had "christened" one person as the presumptive winner for the nomination for their party for the presidency and that person was faltering, you'd hear the story shouted to the roof tops.  Instead, we get what we have been getting the past couple of days from the drive bys . . .

To prove my point, I am watching CNBC and they are interviewing Richardson!  Who?  Yeah, you know that guy from one of the southwest states that is a defeatocrat candidate.  When was the last time that anybody interviewed him????

Excuse me? There is no "life

Excuse me? There is no "life long" Republican who would support a socialist agenda, unless that Republican was a social liberal. Once again the msm has distorted the truth for the sake of making us think it is bad out there.

Yeah, right.

"his views on communism are not where I'm at today, I have a much more global perspective". Doesn't sound like any "lifelong Republicans" I know. How many "lifelong Republicans" would admit that Obama or Reagan was a toss-up?

These stories are out there EVERY TIME a Democrat is running. I remember seeing stories about "lifelong Republicans" supporting John Kerry, too.

"women and minorities hardest hit"

Has anyone done a search on

Has anyone done a search on this bogus "Republican" Monica Green to see if she has made any campaign contributions, which would reveal what type of "Republican" she is?  I do not remember the web site that allows you to enter a name and a state to see if any campaign contributions have been made by said person and to which campaign.

Contributions

According to www.opensecrets.org Monica Green has contributed $500 to Barack Obama.

ROTFLOL

Obama has a Reagan democrat working for the campaign and NBC tries to paint her as a "life-long" republican. Hahahahahaha.

She thinks that Reagan's stance on Communism was too tough, so she would prefer if the USSR still existed and we were still in the Cold War. Ahhhh, the "good old days".

Does NBC actually think that the country believes them, or are they just cheerleaders for Obama now?

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

"She thinks that Reagan's

"She thinks that Reagan's stance on Communism was too tough, so she
would prefer if the USSR still existed and we were still in the Cold
War. Ahhhh, the "good old days""

Actually, if I had to guess, not only would she prefer that the USSR still existed, she would prefer that the USA were more like them.

If she is what qualifies as a "Reagan Conservative", I'm glad she left the party.

Is there some kind of talent

Is there some kind of talent pool called the "Republicans-Who-Really-Never-Were-Republicans-Who-Are-Now-Posing-As-Republicans-For-Liberal Democrats Agency" supplying the networks with these people?
