CBS's Logan on Iraq: 'We're Doing Extremely Badly,' Don't See Dead Soldiers

Photo of Brent Baker.

Asked by Jay Leno on Monday's Tonight Show “how are we doing” in Iraq?, CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan asserted that “we're doing extremely badly” and proceeded to fret, that since images of dead American soldiers are “hidden,” the public does not realize the situation is “much worse than the picture, the image we even have of Iraq.” As for the impact of the “surge,” Logan, who reports regularly from Iraq, allowed that it is “working in certain places,” but only “temporarily” because “if you haven't altered the fundamental dynamics” then you “still have the same problem.” Logan's full answer to Leno's question about how the U.S. is doing in Iraq:

We're doing extremely badly, from my point of view. I was asked if I felt any guilt for the fact that the world has an impression of the war in Iraq as being very bad and going very wrong? And I said I really don't because I can't imagine the last time anyone saw a dead American soldier. We've hidden that from view. Nobody knows what that looks like and I've seen plenty of it. It's much worse than the picture, the image we even have of Iraq.

On the October 15 Tonight Show taped in Burbank, California, Leno also inquired about the surge:

LENO: Does the surge seem to be working, not working? As a reporter, what do you see?

LOGAN: I see it working in certain places, temporarily. But if you haven't altered the fundamental dynamics -- if you still have a government that's sectarian in nature, if you still have an army that's corrupt, infiltrated by militias, you haven't changed anything, at all. You still have the same problem. And what happens when those soldiers go home? Because they're not going to be there forever.

If you tell a lie long enough, it becomes fact. The left has perfected this, for sure!

All looks no brains

She's hot, but good lord, she is an idiot.

Lara, if things are going so badly there, then why aren't any of the logistical bases that I can very well get sent to not getting overrun???  If things were going that badly there, then why aren't our logistical bases well outside the country?

It is VERY VERY SIMPLE if you stop and try to think like a soldier/sailor/Airman/Marine.  And, if you somehow can't (more than likely it is a matter of won't and refuse to), perhaps your friendly military members can explain it to you.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Why was I thinking the EXACT

Why was I thinking the EXACT same first line?

What an ignorant Piece of crap

I think that Sanchez has tried to report on the incompetent reporting of the media throughout this war but the media will not report on his words about that, only his words that are anti-Bush Administration.

How would this idiot like it if someone said that not enough reporters have died in the war. Maybe if more reporters had died they would be more serious about their war reports. Sad, incompetent, anti-American. Journalists were not always like this.

A COUPLE THINGS...

Yes Unsane, she is hot. But I don't think she's a liar. I don't think she hangs around with ANYBODY who does'nt believe that that the war is lost. She may not believe in the War on Terror, & certainly does'nt believe we had the right to knock out Saddam & his sons.

The sad thing is, I don't think she would be too upset if the US & it's allies lost in Iraq. I do believe Ms.Logan does'nt understand the history of war, & the consequences of leaving wars unfinished. We have not finished one off since WW2, & it shows.

I do agree with you, she is hot.

More on Lara Logan

Please note I don't think she's a liar...I said she's an idiot.

There are two kinds of hotties in Unsane's world:  Those who have such winning qualities, that I would really rather marry one of them and take them home to Mom (note to Blonde: Мариа Шарапова falls in that category), and there are those who are, while hot, are so deficient in other areas, that I just want a one-night stand with them.  Care to guess in which category the airhead Lara Logan would fall into?

  She can't say positive

She can't say positive things if she wanted to.  Remember how Katie was slammed during her trip to Iraq?

Is it me or now that Fox

Is it me or now that Fox has showed up, the rest of the MSM
does not even try to hide the fact that they are bias?

Every “News show” is a miniature version of Jack Cafferty or
the Keith Olbermann show!

It’s like: hey you have Fox so now we are going to be Pravda.

These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc.
Ronald Reagan- 40th Anniversary of D-Day

It seems like even Fox is

It seems like even Fox is sliding more to the right. I want
them to try to stay a little more in the middle. My reason: You cant convert
some of the people on the left if they do not hear your message. The big
problem with the people on the left is all of this, feel good ideas but the
ideas are not thought through. Example: I think it would be wonderful for ALL
THE WORLD TO HAVE “FREE” HEALTH CARE!! Well, until you look at the details. How
its not.. free, lines, lack of choose, etc. etc..

If you have both arguments, conservative ideas will always
win.

Look at Bill Cosby, as much as the left and left blacks hate
him, he plods along trying to save this generation of young blacks. They make
fun of him, but his book and speeches will reach a few and that’s a few that
might not end up in jail or unemployed, or doing the right thing when it comes
to a family.

Look I don’t watch Keth Ob., for two reasons I don’t want to
buy a new TV, the other reason is we all know what he is going to say.

I am not afraid of debating ideas with the left. If we get
to do that, we win.

If every one know that Fox is “for the right wingers only”
no one on the left will see.

That is one reason I like the fact we went on MSMBC for the
debates.

You cant catch fish in the middle of the desert.

Or.. you can’t teach in an empty room.

USA4Freedom, I think 1 of GWBush's biggest accomplishments is exposing the MSM for what it is, a bunch of hardline leftists. His very existance & election caused this. I now find it very helpfull in knowing how to analize the news & information I get, now knowing what/how they think. Some people you suspected were hardline leftist libs, now you know it.

The MSM ratings are falling like a cartoon safe, as are the number of people reading papers. I don't think Fox leans as far right as people think, I believe it a case that the MSM & CNN & MSNBC have gone hard left.

This site will show how the surge is working and the rate of our coalition effort fatalities is almost down to 1 a day from 3 a day when the surge began.

The WaPo even reported the surge is working.

The really good news is that my young friend, Sam, is safely back from Iraq I learned from his Mom yesterday. I would like to see Lara meet this 6'4" man, face to face, and see what her reaction might be. Are you sorry,Lara that you had to witness his safe, live return? The enemy is within. His older Brother was in Fallujah for 3 tours, but tragically died when his car rolled over after returning. This family of 11 children, all homeschooled, is one I am quite fond and proud of.

"...since images of dead American soldiers are “hidden,” the public does not realize the situation is “much worse than the picture, the image we even have of Iraq.”

I don't think we saw the pictures of the dead people coming out of that California tunnel fire. Or the every day pictures of traffic deaths and shootings all across the country. These pictures are also "hidden", in Lara's words.

Why do these idiot leftists always try to twist the situation into a sound bite, and then use this to justify their position? Don't they ever learn how to paint a full picture, rather than one single frame that they seem to think best suits them?

This is insane. It's like those angry loser kids who go to their high school football games and cheer whenever their team stumbles, and either boos or is dead silent whenever the team does something good.

The only difference here is that most children grow up.

fortunately, from everyone

fortunately, from everyone else's point of view, including the military commanders who know far more than she does, we are actually doing very well.  I just find it hard to believe the left and the msm are so invested in defeat that they can't forget politics for once and support the great jobs our troops are doing.

Lara Logan CBS News Princess

"...We're doing extremely badly, from my point of view..."

I saw part of the Leno interview, thought she was some foreign celebrity playing journalist.  Everything from her inappropriate dress and style was that of a very young person, a twenty year old that knows all the ills of the world and has an opinion on all of it that we must hear.  As long as she can fend off reality and maintain her current 'point view’ she will continue to be a celebrity news princess.

I saw a good portion of the

I saw a good portion of the interview, from her opening red carpet-like entrance (complete with a stop for the photogs and fans to adore her hippie-meets-haute fashion visage prior to sitting down as if she were some hot celebrity) to her horridly biased and unsupported opinions on Iraq.

I do not recall seeing her previously and so had little opinion.  Right from the beginning of the interview she clearly showed herself to be an avid self-promoter, an expert on all things in "Lara's World" and Leftist rabblerouser.

She made it clear, twice, she was a South Afrikaaner who grew up in a police state, seeing all the ills of tryanny, and being separate from all the nasties of that regime and the current US administration.  In other words, she is a foreigner without a real country of her own who wears her Leftist advocacy on her shirtsleeve.  I'll bet dollars to doughnuts she's a One World Order kind of girl.

Because of her upbringing, replete with the interesting to only her and readers of her one-day memoirs of how she used the tiniest pencil to write down her first reporter story, Logan sees herself as a champion of all things other than the Bush administration.  While she does not drip with contempt like Maureen Dowd or seethes with blinded hatred like RosieO'Dodo, Logan flirtatiously ingratiates herself upon her audience and whispers sweet detritus in your ear.  She uses her feminimity and appearance to charm you while hobbling your ability to reason.

One has to give her credit for imbedding herself with the military and exposing herself to danger.  But, her bias appears to color her reporting to the contrary of all that is occuring in Iraq.  She only sees the bad and will have none of the good.  Her experiences are then more self-fullfilling prophecy than objective reporting, feeding her inner beast while extinguishing hope and the human spirit.

After see her "performance" on The Tonight Show, it is no wonder she works for CBS.  Thank goodness she was not reporting during WWII,  for the Allies that is.

Logan and her like's aspirations: a SOCIALIST-democracy

This Logan, talking-head, is a leftist defeatist with not a clue of what is going on. Whatever or why is this pretentious moron given the slightest of credence? Everyone is a pundit – of course, Logan a reporter is, thus, given even more credibility to prattle her leftist agenda.

Like many of her sort, Logan is in want of a brain retread or, in my view, indicted for aiding and abetting the enemy. The fact that we are a democracy, up to this point; this, needless to say, will never come to pass.

When we, America, become a SOCIALIST-democracy under the fetid auspices of this leftist scourge; America will no longer be the final bastion of Democracy. Nope, we will be a Euro-clone, to which Logan and her bilious gaggle aspire.

chief foreign correspondent?

CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan...

Has CBS News lost its mind? Lara can't be more than a few years out of journalism school. What life experiences could she possibly have to compare what she's seeing in Iraq to? Her answers to Leno's questions were emotional, not analytic. So, have all of the experienced foreign correspondants quit CBS News?

Sorry, I won't go

Sorry, I won't go there.

She's probably scared to death of war and for that I don't blame her. But she's going to have to provide us more than just her feelings to be a convincing correspondant. I think she'd see the war differently if she looked at it more analytically (i.e., honestly).

This entire quote,

This entire quote, beginning with We're doing extremely badly (she just loves those 'ly' adjectives), is just so horribly anti-American, and defeatist.  She was asked if she felt any guilt for the fact that blah, blah, blah..  Guilt????  If she wants to feel guilty, she should go hide in a closet and feel guilty.  We were not wrong to go to war, and we don't have any reason to feel guilty for doing so.  It is ugly and morbid for her to speak of the bodies of our heroic men and women who paid the ultimate price in this fight to preserve our freedoms. What does she really mean here?  Is she saying that she has seen dead American soldiers, on the battlefield?  Or is she speaking of the flag-drapped coffins? The sick truth here is that she is in favor of anything that will demoralize the homefront to the war effort.

I disagree. It's not

I disagree. It's not anti-American to paint the picture as you see it.

Yes it is.

Yes it is.

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

Then define what a

Then define what a journalist is supposed to do when writing an article about the war and how it's going.

Try this on for size.

Report facts, both bad AND good, without personal or political bias.

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

So it is OK to report that

So it is OK to report that you think the war is going poorly, as long as you balance it out with some kind of positive, even if there isn't one.

Wrong on both points. You

Wrong on both points.

You don't report that the war is going badly becasue you "think" so. You report the war is going badly by providing specific and undisputable facts.

And if you think there is no good news coming out of Iraq, particuarly in recent weeks, you are too far gone to help.

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

Well, at least it's better

Well, at least it's better than reporting it's going badly because you "feel" it is, right?

So it's OK to report that the war is going badly based on facts. That's not anti-American. Isn't that what she was doing on Leno?

Bal - you are boring me.

Balboa – I don’t know if you are trying to get me riled up or if you just can’t see reality when it is in front of you. Either way, you are starting to bore me.

“Well, at least it's better than reporting it's going badly because you "feel" it is, right?”

Wrong. Reporting needs to be objective. What you “feel” and “believe” should have no baring on the report if it cannot be backed up by hard and undisputable facts. If you want to talk about what you “believe” and what you “feel” then you are a commentator, not a reporter. This is something that liberals never seem to be able to distinguish.

“So it's OK to report that the war is going badly based on facts. That's not anti-American. Isn't that what she was doing on Leno?”

No. She did not present that facts I was talking about above nor did she attempt to make her report fair and balanced by mentioning the many successes of our military.

In summary, her report was anti-American, and if you support it, so are you.

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

It's ridiculous to brand

It's ridiculous to brand someone as anti-American simply because they say what you don't want to hear.

It’s far from ridiculous

It’s far from ridiculous when what I want to hear are facts from a reporter (not a commentator mind you) who uses her position to advance her liberal agenda and undermine the successes of our military.

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

balboa strikes AGAIN

It is ridiculous for that idiotic b#$ch to say that things are going extremely badly in Iraq when I, as a logistical officer, have yet to hear of one logistical base in Iraq getting overrun!!!  And she is not even an American citizen...if that isn't anti-American, I don't know what is.

But then, you have demonstrated time and time again your penchant for making excuses for every journalists idiotic commentary, poor critical thinking skills, etc etc etc...

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

What "facts" did she

What "facts" did she present that makes you believe that the war is going badly, Balboa?  Be specific.  Don't evade.   Give us numbers and not anecdote(this is what the professorate often says). U.S. forces say violence is down in Iraq.  Are they lying?  What are your/her numbers?  Am anxiously awaiting your "facts".

Logan has already lobbied for video to be aired on CBS that was used as Al Qaeda propaganda and identified a masked man on a violence-wracked street as simply someone who lives in the neighborhood.  Hey, neighbor!

I never said I thought the war was going badly. I said it's not anti-American for Lara Logan to state that opinion.

In other posts you say she is simply giving her opinion.  Either way, she should have some basis for what she is saying. But especially if she is reporting that the war is going badly, she should have facts to back it up.  Why couldn't she do so?  Because Leno had to get to Carrot Top?

If she has no special expertise on the subject, why didn't they just pick out someone from the audience and ask them how things are going in Iraq?  I'm asking, for what reason are you giving anything she said credibility?

Well, you should blame Leno

Well, you should blame Leno then for not asking for facts. She stated what she believed was occurring.

They had her on because she's been to Iraq and seen firsthand what's going on. I don't know if she's right or not, but I don't think it's right to characterize her as anti-American simply because she's not reporting what you think is really occurring.

Leno's fault???

She's not reporting the positive things we KNOW are occurring.  The fact that she was in Iraq makes this fact even more important.

And it is in no way Leno's fault.  She could have (and should have) said something like,

"The military needs help or is failing in areas A, B, and C for reasons D, E, and F.

On the other hand, the military has made great strides in areas G, H, and I becasue of J, K, and L."

This should have presented no problem for a "reporter" who has spent time in country.

Instead, a reporter chooses to say to the Nation 'I think the war is going badly.  Have a great night everyone!'

Jimbo says - "There is a fine line between freedom of speech and treason"

I'm sorry, but if Logan

I'm sorry, but if Logan does not back up her opinion with those elusive "facts", it's just another example of a pattern of anti-war agitation on her part.  Is she a reporter or a commentator?  I think she presents herself as a reporter.

She's on Leno. How much

She's on Leno. How much time do you really think she's going to get to present any facts? She's not filing a report on Leno.

I've seen dead soldiers

It's hard to believe that Logan is arguing, with a straight face, that Americans aren't being told of the real cost of the war. We are, to the contrary, bombarded with it. Every media bulb and Democrat repeats the mantra over and over. Lou Dobbs gives us a death count on every broadcast.

However, if you want to want to display the horror of what a dead soldier looks like, fine. If you want to exploit their deaths, fine. If you want to play to the emotions of the crowd and think you're courageous, fine. But if you do that, be honest, then also show the other parts of that equation. Show the terrorists who are doing the killing you're so horrified by. Show them dancing over the body. Show the terrorists kidnapping and killing families. Show the terrorists slitting throats. Soldiers don't just show up dead. Someone is killing them. If you want to broadcast images of our dead soldiers, it's because you want to evoke (and exploit) our grief for the dead. But then you owe it to those soldiers to broadcast who they're fighting.

The military honors these soldiers, and prevents the media from exploiting their deaths as sensationalism to sell newspapers. But even if the military didn't prevent these images, the media wouldn't have the courage to display the whole picture. If the media did that, they'd see the outrage of the public against the terrorists. Instead of exploiting the grief, the media would unleash the country's determination to defeat those bastards. Lightweights like Logan pretend that if they only showed the images, the public would retreat in grief. But the fact is that media hides the other parts of the equation -- and they know it. The public would demand full force to destroy the cowards who are killing our soldiers. That's what the media doesn't want to unleash.

Yes, I cannot figure out

Yes, I cannot figure out what the left is talking about when they say that we are not seeing enough of the cost of the war by seeing the flag draped coffins.

Several times a week the Army Times posts photos of these flag draped coffins on their website such as the one they have posted this week of  the funeral of Pfc. Carl A. West of Amanda Park, Wash., from his funeral on Oct. 4 at Arlington National Cemetery.

What has the left griping is that we are not allowing the photos of "ROWS" of flag draped coffins that make wonderful photo ops for the anti-war protestors in our midst as they are being unloaded at Dover AFB.

And I thought the left wished to treat people as individuals rather than groups.

Drill..  yer, Like spot

Drill..  yer, Like spot on, Dude!

Another example of NON-reporting

My thesis, that there are no reporters anymore (a general statement - there may be a few, see Mark Finkelstein & others here and elsewhere) and her own words prove it - " . Nobody knows what that looks like and I've seen plenty of it. " - IF, this "reporter" were to do her job, then WE would see these pictures. Why is she NOT reporting this, if what she says is true? Could it be that she's not telling the truth, or that the truth DOESN'T fit the agenda??

More proof? - " . .if you still have a government that's sectarian in nature, if you still have an army that's corrupt, infiltrated by militias, . ." Aren't these the same people who complained that we DIDN'T include the OLD military and sectarian govenment in our plans? If you're going to follow the agenda, at least be consistent!

Back to my first point - she, and others are COWARDS! - if what they say is happening, then why aren't they reporting it? To me, very simple, today's reporters are cowards, in the least, and traitors to reporting/journalism, as well as the the rest of us citizens. An indictment? YES, if not true, PROVE me wrong.

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

"Nobody knows what that

"Nobody knows what that looks like and I've seen plenty of it."  Say what?

How often do you Iraq war correspondents tell how many terrorists the coalition forces have killed?  Why don't you want to show those bodies?  You wait with bated breath to report the latest "milestone" in American Military deaths. You are anxious to report that a homicide bomber has killed x many civilians because if fits your "we're losing this war, the fighters for the 'religion of peace' are winning" template.  You won't report on the number of new schools our military builds over there.  You won't report on the number of kids receiving immunization shots, or on new water treatment plants, or increased electrical generation.  You won't show Iraqi citizens welcoming our soldiers into their towns and neighborhoods, or tell how the majority of citizens over there are glad we came and deposed Saddam, and how the U.S. military and the coalition forces offer protection while the country gets to its feet.

The fact of the matter is, you are more than willing to propagandize for the enemy, yet refuse to report any fact that shows any progress in the war.  You repeat the slogans of the left without any regard to their truthfulness: "Bush lied, people died", "No blood for oil", "There were no weapons of mass destruction", etc., ad infinitum.  You in the news media are not journalists, or even reporters.  You are quisling agents for any group that wants to destroy Western civilization.

"A communist is someone who reads Marx.  An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx."  Ronald Reagan

Oh, yes! The horny demand

Oh, yes! The horny demand of the necrophiliac neoPRAVDA news media to parade dead soldiers in front of the American people so we can all share in their orgasm.  I'd love to tell this woman face to face exactly what I thought about her measure-of-war-by-dead-soldier-body-count ...

I'm sorry, my NB friends ... Yes, I AM extremely bitter about this ... having JUST buried a local "dead soldier" this past Sunday ...

Reading news for 2 or 3 years, while maintaining that "sheer cover - top model" look does not qualify you as a foreign policy expert.

From Hotair.com, Jan. 31, 2007:

"....CBS News reporter Lara Logan, currently the network's correspondent in Baghdad, used clips in a story about fighting on Haifa Street in Baghdad that apparently came from a video that Al Qaeda's media arm also used.  In her story she didn't attribute the video to Al Qaeda, but described it as 'gruesome pictures obtained by CBS.'"

"She has made a big deal out of CBS only putting it on the web and not broadcasting it on CBS News."

"In addition to using a video that also showed up in an Al Qaeda video, Logan failed to acknowledge that Al Qaeda is claiming responsibility for violence on Haifa Street, and she includes a soundbite from a masked man she identified as a local resident.  Pace Andrew Sullivan, he may be a 'resident' but the way he wears his headdress suggests he's really one of the insurgents/Al Qaeda fighters himself."

Barnum was right: there is a sucker born every minute, and they all believe pantywaste "journalists" like this!

I'm intrigued that this

I'm intrigued that this woman made it on Jay Leno in the first place.  Really, what was the point of her visit?  Isn't "The Tonight Show" an entertainment outlet?  It is certainly not a news program.  I know there are assorted politicians and others who make appearances on this program from time to time, but why a news reporter?  I agree with some previous posts, I blame Leno and his producers for having this person on and then asking an opinion-oriented ques
