“Overkill” from “right-wing radio,” in criticizing Senator Hillary Clinton, is her “secret weapon” that will “transform her into a figure of sympathy by a majority of people” -- and presumably help elect her President -- syndicated columnist and PBS NewsHour political analyst Mark Shields contended Friday night. On Inside Washington, a weekly panel show produced by ABC's Washington, DC affiliate which airs it on Sunday mornings after it first runs Friday night at 8:30pm on DC's PBS affiliate, WETA-TV channel 26, Shields argued:
“I think the secret weapon for Senator Clinton, if she is the Democratic nominee, is not simply Rudy's shortcomings, the perceived shortcomings of her opponent, I think you'll see on the part of right-wing radio -- conservative talk, however you want to call it -- such overkill that it will make her, transform her into a figure of sympathy by a majority of people.”NPR's Nina Totenberg then chimed in: “That happened in her first Senate run.”

In addition to appearing weekly on the PBS NewsHour and Inside Washington, before CNN canceled it, Shields was a regular on Capital Gang. Inside Washington also airs over the weekend on NewsChannel8, the DC area all-news cable channel operated by Allbritton Communications which also owns the local ABC affiliate, WJLA-TV channel 7.

So Rush, Laura and Sean are going to make Hillary a sympathetic figure.......
No Mr. Shields not if Rush called Chelsea ugly again, not if Laura french kissed Bill and not if Sean walked up in kicked her in the shin.
Mr. Shields, check the wacko liberal blogs on Huff & Kos and you will find that Rush, Laura and Sean are sympathetic to her compared to what the liberals are savaging Dame Clinton now.
Goodness you got Ziggy Brzenski today calling her inept.........that is her own people.

I agree with Mr. Shields,
August 24, 2007 - 22:05 ET by riff_raffI agree with Mr. Shields, to a certain extent. I think that approximately 46% of the voters will sympathize with Mrs. Bill Clinton. Of course, President Thompson will win the election handily with over 52% of the popular vote.
The majority of the American people don't want a whining, sniveling, doom-and-gloom liberal as the person leading our country. As the election draws near, and the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" begins to hammer candidate Clinton on her flip-flops and socialist idealology, she will naturally play the "victim card" in response. And although I probably shouldn't say it, that is the worst thing she could do. The people of this country want a tough, strong leader as president. Not a poor, helpless victim.
The reason I see Fred Thompson winning is for the same reason President Reagan was so popular: When I listen to them speak, it makes me feel good.

August 24, 2007 - 22:27 ET by Del DolemonteProblem is, she has the media to NOT report what she says or doesn't say.
Kerry was never seriously questioned by the same media that that same year saw one of their icons get shredded for reporting a false story he wanted to be true-solely for political reasons.
And since this is the same media that bowed and genuflected at the Altar of Hope (Arkansas) for an entire decade known as the 1990s, in one last attempt to re-live their childhoods, you know that they will do anything they can to get her elected in 2008.
Which includes controlling the news.

The real reason is not that it's going to turn anyone for Hillary in her defence, it will be the GOP Base will be so enraged they will go to the polls just to voke AGAINST Hillary. That is what Hillary is afraid of, GOPers waiting in long lines to get their chance to give her the collective finger by voting GOP. If the GOP stays home, yet again like 2006, she will win, no doubt about it.

I agree. Mark Shields definitely puts the BS in PBS.
Also, I love the quote, "The only thing you should feel.....". That's the first time I've heard it. Members of the military always have that wonderful, in-your-face, grim sense of humor.

Idiot.

Mark Shields is what I
August 25, 2007 - 00:12 ET by ncstevemMark Shields is what I refer to as a 'girly man'.
Girly men are hetrosexual males who exhibit womanly attributes when it comes to their thought process--i.e. they're guided by their emotions rather than logic. That's not to say that women aren't or can't be logical, but there's no doubt that women are hard-wired to be more emotive than males are.
So, for example, a girly man will have the opinion that it's just not 'fair' that the rich have so much (material goods) when there are the poor amongst us. This leads them to the conclusion that the rich need to pay more in taxes so government can distribute that money to the poor.
They hold this opinion even though recent history demonstrates just the opposite--that lower tax rates for all--low income, middle class, rich--is good for society because it increases the living standards for all by increasing economic activity. The Laffer Curve hypothesizes this idea and tax cuts over the last 45 years (Kennedy's, Reagan's & George Bush's) demostrate what happens when government gets out of the way.
Back in the days when I watched TV, I recall seeing Mark Shields and his fellow girly man, Al Hunt, repeatedly castigate Bob Novak on the CNN program Capital Gang when the latter would opine that a cut in the capital gains rate (it was 28% at the time) would be a good thing for all. I think the Bush tax cuts have proven that notion.
Other girly men include pretty much all male members of the Democrat Party, male liberals, males who happen to work in the media--print, broadcast etc. Examples include Phil Donahue, Dan Rather, Bill Gates, David Letterman, Juan Williams, Alec Baldwin, Matt Lauer etc.
Counterparts
August 25, 2007 - 00:38 ET by Barker......And don't forget those 'manly girls'. Examples include Hillary Clinton, Donna Brazile, Susan Estrich, Rosie O'Donnell, Helen Thomas, John Edwards etc.......
So you say:
August 25, 2007 - 00:40 ET by heldmyw"...such overkill that it will make her, transform her into a figure of sympathy by a majority of people.”
By that logic,
-if we constantly disparage rabid dogs running loose in day care centers, they will eventually become objects of sympathy?
-constantly pointing out the stench of raw sewage will cause us to perceive it as sweet and alluring?
-a continuous campaign against illegal immigrants killing citizens and demanding free services, and we'll drop all notions that they are criminals stealing from us all?
Think of something else, Sparky. That dog won't hunt.
So far...

August 25, 2007 - 07:27 ET by sarcasmoI've ever heard him say, that's for sure. About halfway through I was thinking, "Good God, this is an antigun TV ad in the making. Why is he suddenly so angry & incoherent like every other rock-star?" It's beyond me why Ted, who certainly has the money, can't do something interesting with guns, instead....
Like maybe go shoot a moose from 1/2 mile away with a .50 'sniper' rifle. Or go skeet shooting with a full-auto MP5, I dunno. It just seems silly to mention Democrats and guns at a concert where everyone already knows how Ted feels about both Democrats & guns. The words, "shut up and sing" come to mind, for some reason...
