ABC Addresses Outcry Against Crimes Committed by Illegal Immigrants

“We're going to take 'A Closer Look' now at how a brutal triple murder in New Jersey is fueling the outcry across the country against illegal immigrants,” fill-in ABC anchor Elizabeth Vargas announced Tuesday night in setting up a look at a problem largely avoided by the mainstream media. Reminding viewers of “the senseless shootings of three college students in the city of Newark,” Vargas related how “two of the suspects were in this country illegally. And some are saying it's a crime that would never have occurred if immigration laws were enforced.”

Reporter Jake Tapper explained in his World News piece that “their presence in Newark, a city hospitable to illegal immigrants, what conservatives are calling a 'sanctuary city,' is now part of the debate over illegal immigration.” After soundbites from Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo and Newt Gingrich castigating the city for not enforcing immigration laws, Tapper noted how there's “a rising hostility to illegal immigrants, not just among conservatives, but in the inner city.” To illustrate, Tapper ran soundbites from three people on the street who all argued for a crackdown on illegals, before he concluded with a nod to the other side and why that view doesn't matter: “Liberal immigration activists argue that illegal immigrants do not commit violent crimes more than any other group. But for many in mourning here in Newark, two illegal immigrants may have been two too many.”

The MRC's Brad Wilmouth corrected the closed-captioning against the video for the August 21 World News story:

ELIZABETH VARGAS: We're going to take "A Closer Look" now at how a brutal triple murder in New Jersey is fueling the outcry across the country against illegal immigrants. We've told you about the killings, the senseless shootings of three college students in the city of Newark. It turns out that two of the suspects were in this country illegally. And some are saying it's a crime that would never have occurred if immigration laws were enforced. Jake Tapper has the story.

JAKE TAPPER: An illegal immigrant from Honduras, Melvin Jovel, was arraigned this morning for the shocking execution-style killings of three promising college students in Newark, New Jersey, this month. Jovel joins others in custody for the crimes, including fellow illegal immigrant Jose Carranza from Peru, who's been arrested twice before. Their presence in Newark, a city hospitable to illegal immigrants, what conservatives are calling a "sanctuary city," is now part of the debate over illegal immigration.

Rep. TOM TANCREDO (R-CO): Newark and its political leadership share a degree of culpability. Their actions have directly contributed to the deaths of these three promising young American kids.

NEWT GINGRICH: There is no excuse for city, county and state governments to not have a rule that when you pick up somebody for a felony, you automatically check to see if they're here legally of if, in fact, they are illegally in the United States.

TAPPER: Newark prosecutors say federal immigration authorities told them in writing to only alert them about illegal immigrants who have been convicted of a felony. Carranza had been twice arrested for violent crimes, but not yet convicted of anything. Beyond the finger-pointing is a rising hostility to illegal immigrants, not just among conservatives, but in the inner city.

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN #1: They should stop illegal people from coming over here. They're trying to make it legal for them to come over here, and they shouldn't be, because they can't even really keep track of these people. And they're going out here committing all types of crimes.

UNIDENTIFIED MAN: The federal government will do what they want to do, all right? And we end up wearing the weight.

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN #2: They should stop letting them in illegally. And when they commit a crime, they should do something about it, all right? Don't let them in. Send them back.

TAPPER: Liberal immigration activists argue that illegal immigrants do not commit violent crimes more than any other group. But for many in mourning here in Newark, two illegal immigrants may have been two too many. Jake Tapper, ABC News, Newark, New Jersey.

"what conservatives are

"what conservatives are calling a 'sanctuary city,..."

Such lying BS!

Newark is a self proclaimed and proud of it sanctuary city.

And what do liberals call

And what do liberals call it? They are the ones who coined the term, getting their city councils to pass resolutions calling their towns that.

There is no excuse for

There is no excuse for this. The feds, state and local bear the blame. It has been going on for to long.It isnt like this is the only case either. It has happened in my state as well as many others. The anti worker Dems and Chamber of Commerce Repubs have allowed this to go on as well as the agenda driven media.

People bring up that there is crime by US citizens. That is true so why are we importing it.We have enough criminals we dont need to bring them in from other countries.

It is about time for people to wake up and let the elected leaders know it is time to do their job.Doesnt matter which party or level of goverment. This isnt a Lib or Cons problem it is a american problem. So those folks holding office need to get their heads out of rectal defilade and fix it.

The American Revolution Continued

There is so much

There is so much illegal-immigrant gang activity out here in California that it is very scary. I am not picking on Latino's either (even though they make up a majority of the illegals; San Francisco and Los Angeles have several Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese gangs that are some mean S.O.B.'s.  Then there are the nasty Haitian's on he East Coast.  The immigration problem is at its worst in this Country.  VOTE for a President that stands FIRM on immigration reform. :-)

Illegals don't commit more crimes than citizens

But I thought that illegals were law abiding citizens?  That can't really be true, because they are automatically law breakers when they sneak into the country.  We would have had 3 kids with us today had people been doing their jobs.

Is ABC going to follow-up with the documents supporting this statement:

TAPPER: Newark prosecutors say federal immigration authorities told them in writing to only alert them about illegal immigrants who have been convicted of a felony. Carranza had been twice arrested for violent crimes, but not yet convicted of anything. Beyond the finger-pointing is a rising hostility to illegal immigrants,

Has Carranza even been to court on the charges?  Has he been aquitted?  Or did he just not show up?  I did channel surfing yesterday and found that all of the talking heads supporting illegals, seem to be trying to make it seem like these poor saps are just being picked on..Arrested but no conviction, as if they had gone through a trial...well, what happens to these people when they don't show up for court?  I'm guessing nothing!

Notice that the story is

Notice that the story is not about illegal immigrants and crime, it's about fueling the outcry across the country against illegal immigrants,”

It's the "outcry" that's the problem, you see.

How DARE people be against illegal immigrants???????

 I know.  I mean, don't

I know.  I mean, don't they have the right to come here and make life worse for us by being criminals?  How dare we deny them that!  Just like we shouldn't deny them all of the rights we citizens have without having to work for them, pay taxes, or be legally here.

We are all such evil racists!

<sarcasm!!!>

"Yesterday's Communists are Today's Democrats....

Yesterday's Democrats are Today's Republicans..." - An analogy made by *ME*

Of course there's an

Of course there's an overwhelming outcry against illegals, but our politicians- even local politicians- are not listening!

At any rate, here's my plan...Shut down the borders. Deport ALL criminals (those who are inside and outside of jails), or take them even just outside the border. Deny illegals access to schools, hospitals and other public agencies- especially dole-out agencies. Round up all factories and work sites. Those with good records for at least 10 years, let them stay and start processing their papersThose with criminal records take them to the borders and let them go. Let Mexico have at them. The 5% unemployed Americans now have jobs vacated by illegals.

I am just dreaming that one day...

inner city

No wonder the citizens of the inner city are upset. Crimminal illegals are their new serial killers. Anyone could be next. Only problem is now the authorities are on the killer's side, not the side of the legal citizens. The world has turned upside down.

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

reform!!!!

what do you mean reform?

we already have pretty good immigration laws.

ENFORCE THEM.

OTHER HYPOCRISIES

its not just the major crimes that the undocumenteds commit, its the little stuff too.

listen to roger hedgecock on am 600 occasionally.

its the trash that the illegals leave along the boarder when they jump the fence. (hundreds of tons a year)

its the damage to private property in all of the cities, farms and ranches within a mile of the boarder as the illegals wander through.

the EPA was squeezing the San Diegans gonads about air polution yet the various government agencies seemed to be powerless to do anything about the aged automobiles that the mexicans drive to thier "legal" jobs in the border area every day. said automobiles put out enough smoke along the most used roads that chickens go to roost at mid day.

its gardeners (their all latino in southern california now) that throw lawn and tree clippings into pastures where the horses eat the stuff and die because the clippings from various bushes and trees are poisonous to them.

its illegals getting jobs driving gasoline tankers, missing the off ramp, then backing up on the freeway and the resulting mess killing 23 people and the fire lasting two days.

its the parade of illegals in the emergency rooms that, because of the seriousness of thier injuries (stabbings, shoootings, bad drugs, take your pick) get treated ahead of american citizens.

its a woman stopping at a stop light and five men open the doors to her car and climb into it,  she screams for the cops, they say they thought that she wanted two drywallers, a plumber and two electricians for her home project. looked like a carjacking to her.

its the loss of income for the local governments because of the "underground economy" caused by the "underground people".

its the services costs. illegal families tend to have three or four kids. these kids cost about $8,000 each for school, probably $2,000 each for hidden emergency room costs, (they go in for the sniffles, er costs are astronomical compared to office visits but they don't have to pay for er calls. [they just walk out]). their income (if reported at all) is below the taxable limit and so they either don't pay taxes or they get the earned income credit payment.

its the Los Angeles sherrif hosting 12-15,000  customers for saturday night chow at the county jail and telling us that 3-4,000 of them are illegals.

and on and on and on and on and on.

we're getting kind of tired of getting stuck for the drinks.
