NBC's Harwood Warns: Obama Camp and Press Could Put Romney In The 'Wilderness'

By Brad Wilmouth | July 15, 2012 | 22:07

A  A

On Sunday's NBC Nightly News, CNBC chief Washington correspondent John Harwood warned that, unless the Romney campaign succeeds in changing the campaign subject away from Bain Capital, he could be "left out in the political wilderness pretty quickly" if both the Obama campaign and the media press Romney on the subject persistently.

After host Lester Holt asked "why is the question of when" Romney "was actually running things" at Bain Capital "so key," Harwood responded:

(Video can be found here.)

It's important because, the longer they can associate Mitt Romney with Bain Capital, the wider the range of activities the Obama campaign can criticize him for, like outsourcing and cutting jobs. And it goes right to the heart of the experience, as you mentioned, just as the Republicans went after John Kerry on his military exerience.

You know, Lester, when both the, a candidate, and the press get on the trail of a controversy like this, the target can be left out in the political wilderness pretty quickly, unless they can either change the subject or have the news agenda change the subject for them. Hasn't happened yet.

Harwood's allusion to 2004 Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's Vietnam War service seems to suggest that the media took part in discrediting the Massachusetts Democrat's war record, even though the media treated with hostility the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth after the group forced Kerry to respond to their accusations by hurting his poll numbers.

As painful as it was, I was absolutely amazed as to how gullible the press was on this point. They are accepting it as fact that has to be disproved, pathetic. However, the people who would be swayed are not paying attention, and the others know already.

The press is "gullible"? I'd say complicit.

The contiued "press" this gets. . .

Submitted by rickbren on Sun, 07/15/2012 - 11:06pm.

. . . is incomprehensible. BUT one thing the Obama press has not considered is that the election is three months away. Barry's campaign is spending big money to propagate this lie way too soon. This Bain stuff will be ancient political history in a few weeks. People will tire of it, especially after the press remembers it was them (WaPo) who debunked the story. Too, I have heard that the Romney team is going to wage a scorched earth campaign like the did against the GOP nominees. Pity poor Barry when/if that happens. . . He won't know what to say.

Wish

Submitted by grammajane on Sun, 07/15/2012 - 11:19pm.

Romney would start in on fast and furious, soylinder, collage records, golf, michele and her numerous travels, cloony holding campaigns in France, taking cash from donkey face, etc. Have a feeling Romney is to decent a person to sling the mud or maybe, he is waiting until Oct/Nov. Right now, speaking of all of the failures, is probably a smart move as the libs have zero to run on.

Romney's team better smarten

Submitted by celator on Sun, 07/15/2012 - 11:50pm.

Romney's team better smarten up fast. They need to get off the defensive, focus hard on a few key issues, and understand the
slimeballs they are dealing with (including the MSM). There are so many rotten apples ready to pick off Obama's tree that you could pick five a day and still have some left over on election day. He is the most eligible-to-be-defeated POTUS in many years.

Come on, Mitt, get your head in the game.

Romney is a coward, He won't

Submitted by LAM SON 719 on Sun, 07/15/2012 - 11:38pm.

Romney is a coward, He won't push obama on any winning issue, immigration, the DOJ, holder, green energy scams or racism, Romney is nothing but a younger McCain.

Too early

Submitted by ArcherB on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 12:06am.

It's too early to do anything. No one pays attention until after the conventions. Anything said before the conventions gets forgotten by late August.

Be patient. Wait until after the election. Don't blow your wad before the race even starts.

Given that the people's

Submitted by Slyrr on Sun, 07/15/2012 - 11:43pm.

Given that the people's 'trust' of the media is about as high as their approval of Congress - that's not saying much Harwood ol' boy.

Me thinks you media types have gotten mighty bold lately, and a little too big for your britches. The people have wised up to you media types in a big way, you're in for quite a nasty shock unless you change your tune, and change it pronto. The people are sick of you pimping morons and idiots, and telling us that they're 'sort of god', and that 'the crease in their pants' qualify them to rule the world.

The people want REAL leaders, with real intelligence and experience - not the phony-baloney celebutards you keep trying to pawn off. You had your big chance with your pet liberal president to turn things around and you failed miserably.

This November, the people will rise up and throw your man-child out of power, and put the grown-ups back in charge.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

You said it, Slyrr

Submitted by ant on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 10:12pm.

The press seem to have some deliberate blindness going on. They don't seem to realize, not only do most Americans not have trust in them, but actually find them despicable.

Seems like a strange thing to say on a show called 'NBC Nightly News', now if it was called 'NBC Nightly Democrat News'.....then I could understand.

I have an idea for Romney to make the press drop the subject, tell them you were out-sourcing assault rifles to Mexican drug cartels...they'll never mention it again.
