ABC's Sawyer Suggests Reagan Would Not Be 'Accepted By Any Republican Faction Today'

By Brad Wilmouth | June 18, 2012 | 07:17

A  A

On Friday's World News on ABC, anchor Diane Sawyer cited a recently hyped quote from former Governor Jeb Bush as the Florida Republican theorized that President Ronald Reagan "would be criticized" by Republicans today "for doing some of the things that he did."

As Sawyer recalled it, during a piece on former President George H.W. Bush, she asserted:

He was raised in privilege, but with a sense of duty and respect for others. From these rocks, the 41st President watches politics from a distance, his son saying neither his father, nor Ronald Reagan, would be accepted by any rigid Republican faction today.

Then came a clip of the ABC anchor speaking to him:

Jeb said recently that he worries about the Republican Party and the polarization.

George H.W. Bush responded:

Well, I think that's true in some context. I mean, it gets so locked in and so right, and it troubles me a little bit. But, overall, I don't feel that way.

Ya gotta love that dear old

Submitted by ant on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 7:26am.

Ya gotta love that dear old GOP. The left gives them tons of ammunition, from their beliefs to their words to their actions, and the GOP let's it fall by the wayside. But they are more than capable of giving the Dems any scrap of usable propaganda against themselves. There are really 3 Parties, the Dimocrat left, the GOP democrat-lite, and The People.

WE nominate Mitt Romney..

and these clowns say we would never pick Reagan today because he's too soft? Because after all... Mitt is such a staunch right winger?..... good Lord.

They weren't drunk when they said it, were they?

Thanks Jeb for forever killing your chances to ever run this party. This hard a fight and you Jeb, had to hand these smirking jerks this talking point to paint us all as radical nutjobs.... What's the matter Jeb, your polsters telling you that you didn't have a chance, for being such a rino, so you had to kneecap the party?

Thanks a lot Jeb..

Enjoy your obscurity.

I agree. Jeb really handed them something on a silver platter. I couldn't believe he said that. Yeah, thanks a lot. As for Bush 41, he always was more moderate, but at least he toned down (a touch) what Jeb said.

I also cannot believe how often Democrats use Reagan today to demonize the Republican Party. Or to try to make us think (O, for instance) how much they have in common with arguably one of our most popular U.S. presidents. Give me a break!

You know most of the liberals talking about Reagan so much in this way today had no use for him whatsoever when he was in office -- and used him for punchlines to boot. I wish they'd stop using him to suit their political purposes after his death. I find it revolting.

Reagan couldn't get our nomination today? Gee, Romney or Reagan? Ask some conservatives on that one.

"If not us, who? If not now, when?"

President Reagan wasn't acceptable

Submitted by cocodrie on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 7:46am.

President Reagan wasn't acceptable to the republican party leaders when he ran, why should he be acceptable to them now? They're trying to sound like eagles but they're still buzzards.
The American people accepted President Reagan and that was good enough for him. We'll soon see who is acceptable to us now.

Absolutely right about the GOP

Submitted by ohio granny on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 9:20am.

I remember very well how awful President Reagan was treated when he was running for president and how he was treated by the media when he was president. Amazingly both the old GOP and the media didn't love him until after he died.

Maybe they are just dis-remembering !!!!!!!!!!! Nah, they aren't, they are just lying.

Whoever relies on Diane

Submitted by celator on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 9:52am.

Whoever relies on Diane Sawyer for political analysis is already spinning freely in layers of media ozone. She relies completely on the weekly trope approved by her boss and publicly vomits the words out on her little stage. She is a fraud.

DIane is a trained parrot for the White House, an aging Cockatoo whose feathers have all fallen to the bottom of the crust infected MSM cage she has called home for far too long. She is completely irrelevant to the national discussion about anything..

The paradox of left-wing, yellow journalism.

Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 10:35am.

On one side, they talk about how cunning and clairvoyant the Republican party is to "take advantage" of those poor, hapless voters who happen to be dissatisfied with the current administration and how Mitt Romney will never be conservative enough for the party's core to achieve the nomination. Out of the other face comes the stupidity that Reagan, who knew how to handle Democratic thugs quite well, would never be able to be nominated today and just how stupid Bush 43 to get anything right.

Well, which is it? As a psychiatrist/neurologist I deal with these types of human cognition problems all of the time. Patients never have any real explanations as to how they can possibly reconcile how stupid and how cunning they feel a perceived foe is at any point. They are never able to provide examples other than the emotional claptrap which exists solely in their warped perceptions and impaired cognition. Democrats are driven by hate, which is to say they are driven by an acculturation focused entirely on labeling someone as an enemy and ascribing to that enemy whatever qualities which they believe will win them support for their cognitive impairment and emotional derangement. They are never able to reconcile paradoxical qualities they ascribe to their enemies except to say see how bad they are. That shows the emotional maturity of a four year old.

Submitted by theyjustcantstop on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 1:21pm.

any conservative asked to comment on jeb's description of the gop today, should ask right back, where would jfk fit into this democrat party.
these socialist-unamericans have moved so far left that the real conservatives are fighting just to keep the middle ground.
just stay calm, remember who watches these mmfa,script-readers shows, and their losing viewers all the time, after watching these o'bama cheerleaders for 5 yrs. and the country still headed downhill their of tired it.
their doing the same thing they did in 2008 until now their reading from a script provided to them, their told what questions to ask conservatives, and what subjects and questions not to bring up with the democrats, their hoping a new catch phrase, and class-warfare will be enough to get o'bama re-elected.

You know, it's funny

Submitted by CobraMan on Mon, 06/18/2012 - 1:55pm.

You know, it's funny. The liberals keep claiming that the people in the GOP "today" wouldn't "accept" Reagan, but the majority of the people in the GOP today were alive when Reagan was elected POTUS, twice, and most of them actually voted for him, twice. So, why wouldn't they vote for him again?
