Kathy Griffin Aims Vulgar Name-Calling at ABC's Hasselbeck

By Brad Wilmouth | May 18, 2012 | 05:22

A  A

On Thursday's Kathy show on Bravo!, host and left-wing comedienne Kathy Griffin called Elisabeth Hasselbeck by two vulgar words after playing a clip of the right-leaning co-host of ABC's The View in which Hasselbeck challenged President Obama to explain the distinction between his own view on how the federal government should treat same-sex marriage as opposed to GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's position.

Griffin used the "B" word early on, and toward the end appeared to use the "C" word which was bleeped out by censors while attacking Hasselbeck.

The Bravo! host, an outspoken advocate for the gay rights movement, omitted Hasselbeck setting up her question by noting that "you (Obama) and I (Hasselbeck) share the view, in terms of rights for gay couples and gay marriage."

(Video of Griffin's tirade, and a longer clip of Hasselbeck's question in context are below)

Even though Hasselbeck may have intended her question as a challenge from a pro-gay rights point of view, instead of acknowledging that the normally right-leaning Hasselbeck seems to agree with Griffin on gay rights, the left-wing comedienne perceived the question as hostile to the President and went on a rant. Griffin set up the video:

He (President Obama) was on The View this week, and, of course, Elisabeth Hasselbeck said something really stupid. Let's take a look.

After a brief clip, Griffin interrupted to jump in and start using vulgar language about Hasselbeck. Griffin:

Freeze. All right, I shouldn't be freezing here, but, right away, with her attitude to the President, who was a Harvard Law professor. I'm, like, take it down a notch, b****. (AUDIENCE CHEERS)

Don't be like, like that body language. I don't like that. I don't like Jan Brewer in Arizona going like this to the President on the tarmac. I don't like that. When I was on The View, Barbara Walters said you respect the office. Okay, that's the side tirade. Let's continue to look at the clip.

After playing Hasselbeck's question and Obama's assertion that Romney, unlike he, would support a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, Griffin gloated about the President correcting the ABC co-host:

I mean, I just love the first sentence, which is, "Actually, Elisabeth, that's not true." So, I like, he's so patient with her, and, you know, you have to know when you're outclassed, and there's a million things I don't know, so I'm not going to act like - no, don't show that nice pretty picture of her. Do not, after all that-

An image of Hasselbeck appeared in the background which at first was a normal attractive photo, but it is then switched to one with a strange facial expression. Griffin continued:

After all the names she's called me, show the f [BLEEP] crazy face, okay? But, anyway, so what do you think that moment was like?  I mean, what do you think it was like for Elisabeth Hasselbeck, a runnerup from Survivor, to be, like, stepping up like that to the President, and then, by the way, not being completely accurate.

After one of her guests asserted that President Obama had praised Hasselbeck as his "favorite Republican," Griffin tagged the ABC co-host with more lewd vulgarity:

I mean, look, he's a gentlemanly guy, and he probably said it, but, you know, I'll say she's a [BLEEP] because- [GRIFFIN APPEARS TO USE THE "C" WORD THAT IS CENSORED]

But Hasselbeck has a history of criticizing conservatives for opposing same-sex marriage, and, in the part of her question to Obama that Griffin did not show her viewers on Bravo!, Hasselbeck voiced agreement with Obama's view of gay rights:

Using "Kathy Griffin" and "discussion" in the same sentence is quite a stretch, rick.

Everything she does is some version of "Jerry Seinfeld is the devil!!"

And just as unfunny.

Griffin is simply playing to

Submitted by PeskyDane on Fri, 05/18/2012 - 6:56am.

Griffin is simply playing to expectations of herself.

Love how she touts "Harvard Law Professor" which he wasn't. He was a Lecturer on Consititutional Law in Chicago... and yet there seems to be a dearth of writings on this subject by him. No one, as far as I know has ever interviewed his former students, nor his fellow faculty members.

Also - and this is telling - Romney proposed an ammendment to the state constitution of Massachusetts, but I have not been able to find the quote, time, or place where he proposed ammending the federal consistution. If anyone can provide that, it would be appreciated.

One more issue - Love how the libtards are so defensive about respecting the office of the president these days... I'll just leave it at that.

Doesn't one have to be funny to be called a "comedienne?"

Apparenthly not.

What do you expect from a no talent cow like Griffin?

Her whole stick is based on being on the "D" list and her gay friends, can anyone every remember he saying anything intelligent, Ever? She thinks she is a diva, I don't know why, and that her limited thought process is important, I have no idea why". She is a hack at best why would anyone care what she thinks and who was actually stupid enough to give her a show? Even on Bravo? They are at least a couple of steps above "Current" ond "Ophra" but why?

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Fri, 05/18/2012 - 7:50am.

She's the female version of Bill Maher - without the semblance of intelligence. She's sad because she's not even a has-been. She's a never-was. All she can do to stay in the spotlight is spew vulgarities and take off her clothes on national TV. She's NOT funny unless you have the sensitivities of a badger. Cussing and vile name-calling just doesn't cut it. Sorry Kat, YOU SUCK!

BTW, Someone correct me if I'm wrong please, but I don't recall Romney calling for a Constitutional Amendment on this issue.

Constitutional amendment

Submitted by Model850 on Fri, 05/18/2012 - 3:49pm.

I can't find a direct quote, and Fox doesn't source it either, but they do report Romney has called for it (3rd paragraph from the end):

As governor of Massachusetts, Romney championed a state constitutional amendment to bar gay marriage. He says he supports a federal constitutional amendment to bar gay marriage.

Nothing about a US Constitutional Amendment Model

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Mon, 05/21/2012 - 1:47pm.

This refers to a State Amendment, which must be ratified by the residents of the state. State and US Constitutions are apples and oranges when it comes to law. The US Constitution trumps state laws, and would therefore become the law of the land, whereas a state amendment would only apply the that particular stare, with the consent and approval of state residents. Romney most surely believes what he has said numerous times (and to which I agree) - that he believes marriage is between one man and one woman.
The LGBT community (or at least the loudest of them) are trying to jam their personal philosophy down everyone's throats. Again and again this issue has come up in state referendums, and is, the vast majority of the time, voted down by public vote. It took an gay activist judge to inject HIS personal beliefs to overturn the totally legal and binding vote in Kalifornia banning SSM.
Bottom line - the majority of the LGBTs who are clamoring for this "right" want the monetary perks and breaks that go along with actual marriage. I have little problem with "domestic partners" or similar terms. But to call cohabitation by same-sex couples "marriage" is pure BS. When the first gay couple produces offspring all on their own, maybe I'll consider re-thinking my position...

Read it again

Submitted by Model850 on Mon, 05/21/2012 - 4:18pm.

I understand your point but please read the snippet from Fox again:

As governor of Massachusetts, Romney championed a state constitutional amendment to bar gay marriage. He says he supports a federal constitutional amendment to bar gay marriage.

While Fox didn't source it the passage clearly states Romney "says he supports a federal constitutional amendment to bar gay marriage."

Your argument may be with Fox.

I find the evolution of cable TV in general disappointing

Submitted by Galvanic on Fri, 05/18/2012 - 10:23am.

Twenty years ago, I could put on the History Channel and see history. Now it's about cacthing alligators, pawning merchandize, lumberjacks, and "ice truckers." To be honest, I enjoy Pawn Stars and especially American Restorations, but I miss real history.

I understand MTV stopped airing music videos years ago.

Where once there was diverse specialization between the cable channels, now they tend to feature more and more similar programming, particularly so called reality shows.

For me, the great promise of cable TV has disappeared, but cable itself will probably disappear in the next decade as alternative media will make all kinds of programming available to your favorite handheld gizmo on demand.
