ABC Joins NBC in Citing Outdated Poll Showing Obama Approval Up

By Brad Wilmouth | December 29, 2011 | 21:53

A  A

On Thursday's World News on ABC, substitute anchor David Muir brought up the Gallup Daily Tracking Poll numbers from Monday which at that time showed President Obama with a 47 percent approval rating and a 45 percent disapproval rating, the first time in recent memory that his approval number was higher than his disapproval.  (Video below)

But, since Monday, the Gallup tracking poll numbers have turned further against Obama each day, with today's poll showing that the President's approval rating is back down to 41 percent with his disapproval up to 50 percent. As Muir referred to the Gallup survey as "one poll," he did not inform viewers that this same poll had trended away from Obama since Monday.

However, in spite of showing the outdated more positive number for Obama, neither Muir nor correspondent Jake Tapper gave the poll a particularly positive spin for Obama as Tapper noted that the President would still have a difficult time getting reelected with an approval rating below 50 percent.

After Muir displayed the Monday survey result on screen, noting that the President's approval rating was "inching up ever so slightly in one poll," he went on to caution, "but we gather the White House isn't celebrating this number."

Tapper asserted that "the numbers are going in the right direction," but went on to warn that President Obama would still likely have a difficult reelection.

Tuesday's NBC Nightly News had hyped the Monday numbers as an improvement for Obama while noting - but downplaying - the less favorable Tuesday numbers.

Below are video and a transcript of the relevant portion of the Thursday, December 29, World News on ABC:

DAVID MUIR: Jake, you see the Romney team encouraged by their numbers. President Obama's approval rating inching up ever so slightly in one poll - 47 percent approval, the highest since July - but we gather the White House isn't celebrating this number.

JAKE TAPPER: No, the numbers are going in the right direction, David, and that's key in polling: Where are the numbers going? But still, President Obama is under 50 percent approval rating. It's very tough to get reelected when your approval rating is under 50 percent. In fact, the only way to do so is to make your opponent so outlandishly unacceptable, there's no choice that voters have but to pull the lever for you. That's what George W. Bush did to John Kerry in 2004, and that's what Barack Obama is probably gonna have to try to do to whoever the Republican nominee is in 2012, David.

Brad -- Obama's approval/disapproval ratings

Submitted by Gary Hall on Thu, 12/29/2011 - 10:03pm.

This story just keeps unfolding.

I'm curious - I'd bet we all are - has the MRC analyzed how often (if ever) these networks, etc., have offered up any coverage of Obama's falling poll numbers prior to this?

And, of course, a comparison to how frequently (for 7 years) the MSM was pouncing on President Bush's falling poll numbers -  once they started falling (after hitting 90% approval following 9/11)?

Thanks,

(;~> gary

This is one reason the liberal media hate FOX. They would have you believe their lies if they did not get caught.

They are playing with a lot of numbers not only in this poll. Look at unemployment, we all know that the people in our neighborhoods, cities, and states do not have jobs.

Polls have become background noise

Submitted by Miket53 on Thu, 12/29/2011 - 10:14pm.

Polls are constantly throw in our faces on TV, Blogs, News websites, etc. Most people are not political "junkies" and have become numb to what polls say. If contacted by a poll most people won't listen carefully to the questions or think about their answers. Therefore poll results lost the impact. Plus depending on the demographics of those polled the results will be inaccurate.

More people are becoming political junkies........because they see what has happened by not knowing who is in office.

We all need to know, we have a responsibility to know.

If the obama campaign does indeed go all in on a negative campaign it may provoke a backlash against obama.  When voters are angry, and the country is angry, more negativity is going to make voters choose whatever alternative is offered to hopefully have something better.

Reagan beat Jimmie Carter because Reagan was the alternative to Carter in a dispirited country.

Reagan ran on his record and won reelection in a landslide.  For obama needing to run a scorched earth campaign hoping to make his opponent look even worse than him is both a sign of desperation and the sign of a failed Presidency.

Obama's negative campaign

Submitted by ShrgngAtlas on Fri, 12/30/2011 - 1:56pm.

Unfortunately, negative campaigns work. Just look what happened to Newt in Iowa after he surged to the lead. And look what happened to Herman Cain, even though nearly all the inuendo against him came from Chicago (David Axelrod anyone?) and never proved he was anymore than a flirt.

With the help of the entire MSM, Obama's negative campaign will do severe damage to whoever gets the Republican nomination unless he/she can raise close to a billion dollars to counter it with no media help at all. I can envision a lot of so-called independents who don't pay a lot of attention to politics throughout the year going to the polls with the attitude: yeah, sure, Obama has done poorly, but he TRIED to do some things, and this other guy is just terrible and will probably be even worse. So I guess I'll vote for Obama.

FOX was even worse...

Submitted by jdripper on Thu, 12/29/2011 - 10:51pm.

Last night on Special Report when they had their panel segment Charles Lane, columnist Washington Post, on a segment about the Republicans in Iowa interjected by saying "the facts" are that the economy was starting to really pick up and polls show that Obama would beat anyone. That is favorability was ascending.

Charles Krauthammer then piped up saying that he had been writing about this and how the GOP's field of candidates were too weak and could not beat Obama. Steve Hayes concurred with Dr. K.

There actions were more egregious then ABC. Also tonight after the Rasmussen poll and a day to reflect about it they said nothing. They did on the panel do their nightly trashing of the Republicans.

FOX is as bad as the rest, but for some reason we give them a pass. Why?

Submitted by jdripper on Thu, 12/29/2011 - 11:27pm.

The Special Report these days has Wendel Goler and James Rosen doing puff pieces in regards to BO. Then attacking the Republicans. You had Brit Baier doing his reprehensible interviews with Rick Trumka and Charles Schumer while he pinned his ears back and attacked Mitt Romney from beginning to end in his interview with them.

If you look at how they treated George Bush versus BO the evidence is overwhelming.

Submitted by Mr. Mike on Fri, 12/30/2011 - 10:32am.

FOX is no longer fair or balanced. It was never as conservative as CNN is liberal. It was a news channel that actually allowed the conservative a seat at the table for once. I noticed FOX changing around 2006 when the dems took control of congress. And now recently they allowed a dem strategist to blatantly lie about employment #s and actually call republicans "heartless". Gretchen conducting the interview never once scolded or disagreed with her. This is when I gave up on FOX. When Gretchen Carlson has to bite her lip and not correct a lying democrat then I knew the fix was in at FOX.

on The Five the Democrat on the panel, usually Bob Beckel or Juan Williams (yesterday some 'woman'), tells BFDLs (BIG FAT DEM LIES) and for the most part the panel lets it go... I'm still watching, but not sure how much longer I can stomach 4 RINOs letting one dem lie with impunity.

Fox bias

Submitted by Radical1979 on Sat, 12/31/2011 - 12:10am.

The big tell for me with Fox was when Glen Beck left because Ayles was telling him what he could and couldn't put on his program. It had nothing to do with the veracity of what Beck reported, because it was all backed up and the few times Beck erred he owned up to it. Fox is falling into line with the rest of the MSM.

It must have killed Carlson to not be able to skewer that dem strategist.

Jack I do not agree. Fox has exposed so much.

Dr. Krauthammer is just mad because the men running are not as smart as he and when they mess up he does not have patients with them, he would like to direct their campaigns I guess. We have some good people campaigning, they are not smooth talkers and they open their mouth and it is all over the news .... makes them look bad .... we know what kind of leaders they have been, but a few misspoken words can destroy them in a liberal media. Just look at Bachmann, she has accomplished a lot in her life, but is making some bad mistake now with her mouth.
Dr. Krauthammer knows this. Read his articles, he's no Democrat for sure.

MSM idiots are engaging in wishful thinking. They will need counseling after the "Won" is defeated in a landslide in Nov. 2012.

There will be much rejoicing after the election by conservatives who love this country (liberals will be despondent).

Adults Telephone Poll

Submitted by Jerry Mack on Fri, 12/30/2011 - 7:16pm.

As long as the person answering the phone says that they are over 18, the poll is conducted whether or not they actualy know who Obama is or if they are 12 years old. If the poll is favorable for the Messiah the Lamers will tout it until the ink fades or the cows come home or Turkeys fly.
