CBS Team Laughs at House GOP 'Cave,' ABC Plays Up Republican Defeat

By Brad Wilmouth | December 23, 2011 | 10:24

A  A

As the broadcast network morning newscasts on Friday all reported on House Republicans backing down on a temporary extension of the payroll tax cut without extracting additional concessions from Democrats, the CBS team on The Early Show saw humor in the House Republican move as substitute co-anchor Jim Axelrod quipped that "the word of the day in Washington will be 'cave,'" evoking laughter. (Video below)

As substitute hosts Rebecca Jarvis and Jim Axelrod began the show, they brought aboard correspondent Sharyl Attkisson, and Axelrod posed:

The deal will head off the tax increase that would have been implemented next month for 160 million American workers. Sharyl Attkisson is on Capitol Hill for us this morning with details. Good morning, Sharyl.  I guess the word of the day in Washington will be "cave." What's going on?

Jarvis and Attkisson chuckled, while at least one other person could be heard laughing on set.

ABC's Good Morning America went the furthest in describing the move by Speaker Boehner as a defeat for Republicans, even though Senate Republicans had already at least managed to include a requirement that President Obama announce a decision of whether to approve a new pipeline before the 2012 presidential election.

Co-anchor George Stephanopoulos brought aboard correspondent Jonathan Karl and posed: "Congress always goes down to the wire. The holdouts here were the House Republicans, but, for the first time this year, they didn't get what they wanted."

Karl responded:

Yeah, this is a significant moment because, time after time, House Republicans have dug in, they have stared the President down, and they have essentially gotten what they wanted or at least won major concessions from the Democrats.

This time around, they said there was no way they would go along with a temporary extension of that payroll tax cut. They dug in, day after day after day, and, in the end, got nothing to show for it, George, except for several days of really bad publicity, where it looked like they were the ones standing in the way of a tax cut.

And on NBC's Today show, correspondent Kelly O'Donnell concluded by suggesting that House Speaker John Boehner may even be in danger of losing his position:

ANN CURRY: Hey, listen, Kelly, how damaging has this payroll tax controversy been to Speaker Boehner's leadership?

KELLY O'DONNELL: Well, those questions are being asked by especially angry House members who still think they shouldn't have caved on this for a deal. John Boehner has been caught between trying to make a deal early, trying to bridge those divides between dealing with the White House and conservatives. This has been a very tough week for him in his speakership, and there are questions about whether he should even continue in that job. It's been a real challenge to his leadership.

Below are transcripts of relevant portions of ABC's Good Morning America, CBS's The Early Show, and NBC's Today show, from Friday, December 23:

#From ABC's Good Morning America:

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: But now we have a story of on-time delivery. It's in Washington. Just barely in time for Christmas,  Congress and the White House have come together on a plan to prevent a tax increase on 160 million Americans. ABC's Jon Karl joins us again with more on that, and, Jon, and Congress always goes down to the wire. The holdouts here were the House Republicans, but, for the first time this year, they didn't get what they wanted.

JONATHAN KARL: Yeah, this is a significant moment because, time after time, House Republicans have dug in, they have stared the President down,a and they have essentially gotten what they wanted or at least won major concessions from the Democrats.

This time around, they said there was no way they would go along with a temporary extension of that payroll tax cut. They dug in, day after day after day, and, in the end, got nothing to show for it, George, except for several days of really bad publicity, where it looked like they were the ones standing in the way of a tax cut.

#From CBS's The Early Show:

REBECCA JARVIS: And we begin with that news that the end of D.C. deadlock is over, the payroll tax cut, just in time for Christmas. On Thursday, House Republicans bowed to pressure from all sides agreeing to extend that tax cut for two more months.

JIM AXELROD: The deal will head off the tax increase that would have been implemented next month for 160 million American workers. Sharyl Attkisson is on Capitol Hill for us this morning with details. Good morning, Sharyl. I guess the word of the day in Washington will be "cave." What's going on?

#From the Today show:

Submitted by sublight68 on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 10:42am.

And this is exactly why the Republicans should stick to their principles (those that have them anyway). No matter what, the MSM will spin them as coming out on the losing end.

Stand fast? They're obstructionists. Compromise? They "caved" and lost.

Bigger picture, though, I'm just tired of all the damn games, by both sides. Government, especially at the federal level, should be something that quietly and unobtrusively runs in the background; we shouldn't have to constantly worry about what is or isn't being done to us.

EXactly, "compromise" is only

Submitted by MrSnuggles on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 11:02am.

EXactly, "compromise" is only used by the leftist media when they want Republicans to do the democrats bidding. When they ACTUALLY DO what the left wants, "compromise" is no where to be found.

Exactly!

Submitted by CoolShades on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 1:18pm.

We didn't hear the word "compromise" during the health care debate. No. The Democrats and MSM were more than happy to ram that legislation through Congress. But we sure starting hearing "compromise" when the the Republicans took control of the House. So, for the good of all of Congresses "Christmas" vacation schedules, the House Republicans compromise. The reward? A good opportunity to humiliate and ridicule the Republicans for the very things the lame stream media libtards have been asking of them - to compromise.

Unless I hear different

Submitted by jon_torlin on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 10:42am.

I hate to say this, but these yokels got it right this morning about Bonehead and Can't-Do-It.  Karl hit it on the head when he said "where it looked like they were standing in the way of a tax cut" referring to the Repubs holding fast, which means these same yokels KNEW what the real skinny was about this BS farcical drama.  They KNEW it was the dems just kicking the can down the road, but they are more than happy to lay the blame on the Republs anyway.

Talk about complicity on full display if anyone ever reads between the lines.

But either way, I can't think of a real logical reason why Bonehead and Can't-Do-It caved to this.  It just means this crap will have to be brought back in two months and THEN what's going to happen?  More class warfare?  More speeches about how 40 dollars will save us some money while they have prices high on everything else on the normal essentials of something we call LIVING?  Kick their asses out of office, for God's sake!!!

And one other thing, how can there be a tax increase on 160 million Americans?  Which of these 160 million Americans are these?  The same ones of the 95% that didn't get their taxes increased?  I could think of some other nonsensical numbers, but 160 million sounds like one they pulled out of their ass like they have about health care for millions.

Why do McBoehner pick political fights they don't have the will

Submitted by lsudolemite on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 11:22am.

to win? This is now a clear pattern of ineptitude, from the budget, to the "best deal we could get" on the debt ceiling with the super-committee garbage, and now this. If they're going to capitulate every time the political going gets tough, just give in from the beginning so I don't have to see their cowardice on display every day, or their ridiculous political theatrics that aren't fooling anybody.

I can understand McConnell being gutless as minority "leader", but Boehner is weak, plain and simple. Priority #2 behind beating Obama is sending as many conservative reinforcements to Congress as possible and unseat these two.

Yep

Submitted by Galvanic on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 11:38am.

The trap was set, and they fell in it.

But come next summer when the 2012 campaign is in full fury, this little skirmish won't have amounted to anything.

Remember, the real issue is the full year extension of the payroll tax cut, which the Congress has to address when they get back from winter recess next January. What transpires out of that will make this episode forgettable.

Regarding the 60-day decision Obama must make on the Keystone Pipeline, I think the key is in the language.

For instance, if the language mandates that he make a Yes or No decision in 60 days, he will continue to postpone the decision until after the November 2012 election, and let the lawyers fight it out in Federal court for the next year over the Constitutionality of the language.

But if the language mandates that the Pipeline will begin on a particular date unless the President says No in the next 60 days, Obama has an escape route: He can decline to kill it in those 60 days, while telling his green donors that he never really approved it.

It's all in the game.

Laughing now???

Submitted by ohio granny on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 10:58am.

All this does is insure that Social Security will collapse faster than it would have if the tax had not been lowered. I personally do not find this funny. How is this going to be paid for? Supposedly by adding a tax on all new Fanny Mae, Freddie Mac and FHA home loans. Who will this help? certainly not anyone getting one of those loans after Jan. 1, 2012. I doubt that this will even come close to covering the cost for this.

So go ahead and laugh now fools, the day of of reckoning is fast approaching. Unfortunately we will all pay for this by higher taxes and reduced benefits. This has just proven that there is no lock box or set aside for Social Security benefits.

Not a single one of them (that I know of) had the stones to stand up and say You know what? This is isn't a tax cut that will create jobs; all this does is take money from Social Security, since it's the FICA tax.

THAT at least would have forced the Democrats to admit that there IS no Social Security funding mechanism; it all comes out of the general fund.

But have no fear, they will howl to raise taxes even more on "the rich" to make up for it.

Drudge headline today: Debt now at $15,123,841,000,000!

What was it when The Miracle Worker came into office?  $10. 6 trillion.

The smartest man in the world increased the debt by almost 50% in just 3 years!!

How's that for a miracle?

(that's supposed to be a mocking way of saying social security for those of you in Rio Linda, Rush mentioned it once that some dem said it that way, but don't remember who)

I've a ways to go before I retire as is true for some of us on here.  One thing for sure, I won't be expecting anything from Social Security, NOTHING at all, and this stupid thing proves that.(Thank God I'm doing a different far more reliable retirement package that I set up 20 years ago!)  So what's the point of having social security taken out of my check if nothing's going to be there for it?  Is there some way to prevent it from being taken out anymore?  It's turned into a money pit with no bottom and I'd rather put more of that into my retirement package.

(Of course, this is assuming we get past the next few months before the potential of all hell breaking loose no thanks in part to this bogus potus and his continuing destruction of America as well as extremely likely chances of a massive attack on the part of the enemy of the Americans, enemies including the fed government)

McConnell is at fault

Submitted by Tomorama on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 11:11am.

How f......... up has our country become that the ones who ARE FIGHTING for this to be increased for 12 months, thus providing MORE stability come off as the losers here, while the POS who wanted to kick it down the road as they do with everything, come out winners?

I don't blame Boehner, I BLAME McConnell and those ass hats for wanting to go home and agreeing with the cowardly Demonrats.

These people don't give a damn about nothing but themselves and I am disgusted.

THEY SHOULD HAVE fought for 12 months in the SENATE and WE were winning the argument but no lip McConnell had to go Christmas shopping........

NOTICE NOT ONE MEDIA OUTLET noted the fact that more than one payroll company said this is not doable for 2 months?

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Fri, 12/23/2011 - 11:35am.

Your comments about the Senate make the most sense of any so far on this thread. This is the typical political games that go on in the Senate. Most of the Republicans in the Senate are too chicken to vote no on the short two month extension. They know the press will be complicit with the Dems and hold it over their heads and beat a constant drum about how Republicans want tax cuts for millionaires but would "raise taxes" on 160 million Americans.

Most Americans aren't even paying attention to this stuff, but they would notice if their take home pay goes down come January, and that's what the Dems were hoping would happen..  The press would have a field day with their "Republicans Raise Taxes on Poor and Middle Class" stories.  The elections of November 2012 will present the first opportunity to truly end this game playing.  Until those elections happen, the Dem controlled Senate and the press are going to try their best to pit the Tea Party wing of the Republicans against the moderate Republicans.  It's up to people to want real change in November 2012 to not let the Dems and the press destroy that opportunity.

Look for the HBO Palin shred fest film, some more Watergate retrospectives, lots of Camelot, maybe a little Frontline Iran Contra, a dash of Rumsfeld and Haliburton, and a hefty pile of no WMDs. Happens every single election cycle. The Vichy/Quisling Media are very consistent in that regard.

Speaker Boehner was a fool to have paid any attention to McConnell, Reid and Obama. He had the upper-hand in this political chess-match.  Obama, Democratic and Republican Senators would have run backed to the bargaining table by the 27th of December. There was no-way for them NOT to pass the 12 month payroll tax extension and extending unemployment benefits. Once again, Republicans chose to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory.

That after the first $18,000 dollars has been earned the tax cut is no longer applied. So, any one making over $9,000 a month is still screwed. WOW, is that not a Democratic "GOTCHA" or what, just think of all the government (federal, state, county and city) employees that are going to get sup-prized come March. It`s amazing how the Democrats find ways to totally SCREW their dumb followers and get away with it. Remember most of the public sector employees are Union people. HO-HO-HO Merry Holidays you dumb democratic twits. No wonder why the Senate Democrats only wanted a 2 month extension they are trying to hide every TAX hike until after the 2012 elections hoping Obama wins. Then you (includes everybody) have not seen anything yet 2013 is projected to have THE MOST COSTLY TAX HIKES IN AMERICAN HISTORY not only on a wages but, Obamacare is loaded with 21 huge tax hikes including a 6+% tax on selling homes. So, hang on to your Shorts and Bras ladies and gentlemen they are probably looking for ways to implement some sort of size tax but regardless, You Ain`t Seen Anything Yet.

America is on her death throws and Obama wants it done by 2016. Then his of promise of "Fundamentally Changing America" will be complete. Good luck you Morons.
