ABC Team Obsess Over Romney's $10,000 Challenge to Perry
After ABC's Republican presidential debate on Saturday night, several members of the ABC team spoke of Mitt Romney's attempt to make a bet with Rick Perry about whether Perry was correct in asserting that Romney had advocated Massachusetts-style Romneycare as a model for the nation, with predictions that the $10,000 bet comment would hurt Romney with voters.
After arguing that Perry appeared to be the one who was factually incorrect in the dispute with Romney, ABC's Jake Tapper went on to predict Romney would still be harmed by the exchange. Tapper:
But the big issue, I think, is the fact that Mitt Romney was trying to wager a $10,000 bet in a debate in Iowa. The median income in this country means that $10,000 is roughly three months income. And even though he was just joking around, I think that that probably did not help him. And even if he'd won the letter of the bet, by making the bet, as Matthew Dowd pointed out earlier, he probably lost the (INAUDIBLE).
When co-host George Stephanopoulos asked David Muir for his reaction, Muir noted that he had already emailed Romney campaign contacts about the subject, and then added:
But it's interesting we're talking about the $10,000 bet. A columnist for the Des Moines Register has already penned a column saying not too many caucus goers here in Iowa would ever place a $10,000 bet, even if it was a sure thing. So when we ask Americans a couple of days from now, they likely won't even remember, what issue this was about, but they will remember the $10,000 figure.
ABC News Political Director Amy Walter sooned revisited the $10,000 bet:
This was supposed to be a debate where Newt Gingrich was the one under the line of fire, but, instead, it really was Mitt Romney who made most of the headlines, and not all of them were very good. Obviously, the $10,000 bet being the top one here.
Below is a transcript of relevant portions of the post-debate coverage on ABC, from Saturday, December 10:
JAKE TAPPER: One thing I wanted to settle is that $10,000 bet that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney tried to wager with Rick Perry. Rick Perry said, "I read your first book, and it said in there that your mandate in Massachusetts should be the model for the country." Romney disputed that and offered to bet him $10,000. We do think actually that Governor Perry was not quoting exactly what Romney had said. What he actually had written that was removed from later editions of the book is we can accomplish the same thing for everyone in the country.
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: David Muir, what is the Romney camp saying about that?
DAVID MUIR: Well, it's funny that you ask that, George. I've already sent out emails to many of our contacts with the Romney campaign. ... (INAUDIBLE) ... But it's interesting we're talking about the $10,000 bet. A columnist for the Des Moines Register has already penned a column saying not too many caucus goers here in Iowa would ever place a $10,000 bet, even if it was a sure thing. Nothing Issue Blown Way Out Of Proportion

These Media rabble-rousers aren't exactly one of the 99%'ers. Steffie and the intoxicated Didi were wearing clothing most Iowans will never be able to afford. Sawyer's outfit and jewelry could have been used as collateral on the bet, if not cover the entire bet.
The Leftist Media thought they had their candidate killing quote of the day from Gingrich telling the truth about the so-called Palestinians, but then came Mitt with something they could exploit more easily.
Romney's bet remark was innocuous. If you know you are correct about a point of contention an ordinary thing to do is to wager an outrageous sum, knowing full well you will win. Usually, the other side backs down, as Perry did, and people move along.
Yet, the Media and fellow Leftists will use it as a wedge issue. The fact that the Media jumped on it just several minutes after the end of the debate shows how biased these jerks are. Made me think of The Beatles song Piggies.
Funny how quickly the Left and the Paulbots (see Free Republic web site) have already made an issue out of Mormonism and gambling.
This is such small mindedness. the most important issue of the day was Newt telling the truth about the so-called Palestinians and the fear this creates in the Left and establishment Republicans.
Sorry But Buying The Pot Is Extremely Rude In All Circles

A polite bet with someone who is employed by Government is probably a hundred dollars, for a Governor maybe $500. Increasing the amount to the point where the other party can't pay or shouldn't is very bad manners. It is called buying the pot since your bluff can not be called since a player with a seperior hand can not call.
Romney stepped from a friendly game to the kind of game where players are required to buy all of their chips at the begining of the games and there are table limits.
The reason for the high amount was because Romney...

knew Perry was wrong and he wished to be adamant in saying so.
People who pay attention to these things, now know Romney was right and Perry was wrong.
It helped Romney and hurt Perry, because we don't want another president like Obama who goes around saying false things.
(At least I hope not.)

What makes you think Perry couldn't cover the bet? He has the money. (http://www.businessinsider.com/how-rick-perry-became-a-millionaire-2011-8)
What this amounted to was a man's honor. Romney's honor. How small do you go when it comes to your honor, Avitar? When running for the presidency, sometimes you go big, like a $10K bet, when the other guy's been smearing you with misstatements and just did it again on national TV. After trying conventional resolution approaches, Romney was fed up and told Perry to put his money where his mouth was. Any amount Romney mentioned would have been twisted by the Left and others who buy into class warfare Marxism, people who probably wouldn't vote for Romney anyways.
Perry could have pressed the issue but didn't because he either knew or was unsure Romney was correct. Perry could have turned it around but didn't, and it wasn't because a wager had been made. Let's not hide behind the BS excuse of a dollar amount for Perry's fizzle on this one thing. I want a president who knows when he's got the cards and the chips and knows how to use them to continue the traditions of this country, most importantly our Constitution.
Both men wear big hats. Romney showed he had the cattle this time.
I'll vote for any one of these candidates against Obama. A $10K bet concerning honor between people who can afford the loss isn't going to change my mind. Will you, Avitar, vote for Romney if he is the Republican candidate in the general election?
They are doing it right now ....

on "This Week". It was an interesting tactic by Romney and it will be talked about. But I don't think it will be considered negative because of the high amount. Wow, Jake Tapper, just defended Romney with a personal experience where he made a similar bet because he says he knew he was right.

your mouth is. Who wouldn't want the opportunity to win a $10,000 bet?
Even holier that thou Liberals would love to win a sure bet for that kind of money.
Perry wisely declined to bet. I think he learned to get his facts straight in the future if he decides to attack Romney again.

this probably won't hurt Romney because all he needs to do is point out that he was wagering his own money when he made this bet. This is in stark contrast to Barack Obama who routinely makes $500 million bets with taxpayer money (i.e. Solyndra).
You are so right..

Don't think for a second that Romney's campaign team isn't working for a spot to insert that into the next debate, even if a moderator doesn't bring it up. The question is only, will it be used topically and in the flow of discussion, or will it be used where it may seem a little awkward to be used at the moment it is, just to make sure it gets said?

I believe nothing will save Romney from his downward spiral. He has not made any headway and in fact is losing support. Two months at the most. The only real question left in this race is who will Newt choose as his running mate?

did you think the same thing about Romney not making it when Bachmann was surging or when Perry and then Cain became front runners and then they all fell to the wayside. Gingrich has a loose canon reputation for a reason. Lets see if he can maintain verbal discipline all the way to the election. Also, his lack of wide spread organization and funds will be a handicap he has to overcome

Romney shows that he is completely out of touch. As I have seen other Conservative websites point out, how many of us have $10,000 of our own that we can so easily bet on? AND the FACT is that Romneycare in Mass. WAS used as a model for Obamacare. If we elect Romney to be our candidate, Obamacare is off the table as well as showing how Obama is an out of touch President who constantly, along with his wife, gives himself lavish vacations while the American people suffer.
Romney is the Republican Establishment and we must fight him and the RNC Establishment.

I have every confidence that Romney as President, with a veto proof Senate and a majority in Congress, will be a very Conservative President and he will be very good for America.
He may even save this Country from Obamaism.

Jawebster1,
Nice attempt at making about having lots of money. I don't care how many millions Romney has. I am neither glad nor upset he is rich.
The point is that his stupid bet proves how out of touch with the average Americans politicians like Romney are. Flaunting your money on a bet which you WILL lose, because Romney would lose, is stupid at best and very unpresidential.
Also, nice of you to not address the fact that if Romney is elected as our candidate, issues like Obamacare are completely and utterly off the table. The second Romney goes after Obamacare, guess what Obama will say. "Mr. Romney, that is strange you are against the individual mandate now since while governor of Mass. you signed into law an individual mandate. Furthermore, when I was putting together with Congress Obamacare, guess who you send to help me, your aides who helped you draw up Romneycare"
Electing Mitt Romney as our candidate will be a disaster for the Republicans.
Romney is the Republican establishment, we as Conservatives must fight against his election and disregard him as we disregard Ron Paul.

most people would do under the circumstances. He asked Rick Perry to put his money where his mouth was. Perry smartly declined, thereby saving himself $10,000.
Romney won that little tete-a-tete but the left, as they always do, made the episode an example of class warfare in that only the rich can afford to bet that kind of money.
That is why I never watch ABCCBSNBCCNNMSNBC for news and that is why even though I have heard of "Steffie" Stephanopoulos, I have never heard of David Muir until I watched this debate.
