Time's Toure: Herman Cain 'Giving Comfort to Racism'

By Brad Wilmouth | November 03, 2011 | 08:36

A  A

Appearing as a guest on Wednesday's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC, Time contributor and MSNBC analyst Toure asserted that Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain "serves a massive psychological purpose" for the GOP as he offers a "Herman Cain card" that can be used by Republicans when they are accused of racism.

He went on to charge that Cain is "giving comfort to racism."

Below is a transcript of the relevant exchange from the Wednesday, November 2, The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC:

TOURE, TIME CONTRIBUTOR: But this is a major moment for the GOP because Cain is a really important candidate - perhaps more important than any of the other candidates - because he serves a massive psychological purpose because there's a lot of people in the GOP who have been critical of Obama and have been made to feel that they are racist because of their criticism. Some of it has been racist, some of it's been reasonable, some of it's been business-as-usual Republican-Democrat stuff, okay.

Cain comes along offering salvation, liberation: You're not racist if you support Herman Cain. So now they have this Herman Cain card that they can throw at us anytime they are made to feel racist, so this is like a beautiful thing for them. So they need him to succeed as long as they can deal with him so that they can get their Cain card and make it as valuable as possible. But, of course, this whole transaction is a canard.

LAWRENCE O'DONNELL: In what way?

TOURE: Well, I mean, Cain is giving comfort to racism the way that he purports himself, as we've discussed before on this show, so, I mean, this is  not the person that you can hold up as, well, see, I'm not a racist, I love Herman Cain.

Submitted by eaglewingz08 on Thu, 11/03/2011 - 8:47am.

Since all these liberals have made vile racist comments about Herman Cain, the only aid and comfort to racism that Cain is giving, is for "progressives", "democraps" and "liberals" to vent their most vile racist thoughts against him without being held to account and without any calls for their resignation for fostering this hostile racist environment against Mr. Cain. Seems that extremism and racism in the cause of liberal socialism is no vice to the media.

What a puppet.

Submitted by NeoKong on Thu, 11/03/2011 - 8:47am.

It seems like his only job now is to call Herman Cain an Uncle Tom under the cover of being black while O'Donnell gloatingly smiles in approval like Dr. Smith from the old Lost In Space. "Marvelous my boy..."

I wonder if O'Donnell feeds him a treat after and pats him on the head.

Re: Toure's comments

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Thu, 11/03/2011 - 8:57am.

Last night I watched “Earth vs. the Flying Saucers” on a DVD.

I understand my comment has nothing to do with the subject at hand… but neither do Toure’s comments have anything to do with reality. In fact, if in his mini-rant you substituted “Obama” for “Cain” and "GOP" with "DEM" you would have a perfect description of the modus operandi of the Democrat party.

Submitted by pockets64 on Thu, 11/03/2011 - 9:42am.

This is typical Democrat projection. They take bribes and accuse GOP of being corrupt. They burn gay Repubs and accuse GOP of being insensitive to the gay cause. They put troops on the ground in 3rd, 4th, 5th wars and accuse GOP of being war hawks. They take big bucks from very rich people and are quite rich themselves and then accuse the GOP of being the party of the rich (as though that would be bad even if true).

And now this.

As Shakespeare said:"The lady doth protest too much, methinks". The party of the KKK and civil rights bill fillibuster that revered Byrd till his dying day is calling their opposition racists.

One has to wonder how stupid the liberals think the public is. We all see what they are doing and at best they are exposing for all to see their hates poisons and racism and I for one am loving it. It will help them lose in a landslide in the coming elections.

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 11/03/2011 - 9:16am.

TOURE: ". . . because he serves a massive psychological purpose because there's a lot of people in the GOP who have been critical of Obama and have been made to feel that they are racist because of their criticism."

No one who criticizes the President's performance has been made to feel that that they are racist for doing so.

It is racists on the Left and their MSM echoes who have labeled them racists.  For Toure to make such a suggestion is totally twisted and disingenuous, but of course it is absolutely necessary to establish it as 'fact' in order for him to take the next leap in logic regarding Cain' "role" in absolving the GOP of imaginary racial guilt.

That such crap airs on MSNBC comes as no surprise.

Not only twisted and disingenuous but arrogant and egotistical as well, think about what he’s saying anyone criticizing Obama has been made to feel their racist because… we in the media keep saying they are. I don’t know about you but I haven’t been lying awake nights worrying that my criticism of Obama’s disastrous policies means I might be a racist. What a self-important buffoon, maybe we should call it Toure’s syndrome.

Submitted by motherbelt on Thu, 11/03/2011 - 9:17am.

Whenever I hear these stupid arguments about Cain and GOP racism, I'm reminded of a story I read some time ago:

A four-year-old girl asks her father, How's Santa Claus going to get into our house, because we don't have a fireplace and a chimney?"  The father, seeing an opportunity,  goes into a long explanation of the fact that Santa isn't real, he's a story about giving, and all the generosity of people during the Christmas season, etc.

When he's done, he asks his daughter, do you understand?  And she says, Yes, but  how is he going to get into our house???

Funny...

Submitted by adamsmith on Thu, 11/03/2011 - 9:23am.

The only people that see racism is the Progressives. Ironic as Progressives started Planned Parenthood for the goal of eliminating blacks from America. Race hustlers like Toure', who got his start on MTV as "Token Black" see all this white hatred of blacks. If whites were as racist as they claim, wouldn't whites hate Chinese,Japanese,Samoans,Arabs,Australian Aborigines, etc? It makes no sense that whites would single out blacks only for racial hatred. Rather I think it is blacks who are racist against whites( as well as Koreans and Indians since they have to use their stores) and use their votes to put in race hustling politicians who give them crumbs to keep them on the Dem Plantation. It is something for "free" that white taxpayers have to give for "reparations". Racism is the biggest lie there is. It's a far different country than a hundred years ago. The Clarion Call of racist blacks is that they were used and abused for "400 Years". I guess they want free money for the next 400 years to make up for it, regardless of how it is bankrupting the country. Unless blacks drop their racism, they will never move up the ladder in America. They are not inferior racially as they claim that's how they are treated. They merely have an inferior culture and ideology that punishes integration with American Culture. When they view their own as sell outs because they buck the black trend of education being "white" and working hard to get ahead as being white, they will remain on Massa Whitey's Democrat Plantation forever. Toure' is a hypocrit, as well as a Kool-Aid drinker. He does "his" people much harm. Oh well.....

Japan even went so far as saying they didn't want an apology for "Big Boy" as they need our nuclear protection against North Korea and China. So much as said Obama was an idiot for even thinking about apologizing. I hope your reply was sarcastic as that's how I'm taking it. Comments like Toure's just solidify support for Cain. Toure shows what we've always known about liberals - they have racist attitudes about how certain people should think and vote. What could be more racist than saying that all blacks must think and vote the same way? So, why are GOP voters gravitating toward Cain right now? Many are like me. I'm looking for the best conservative alternative to Romney. First, I was for Pawlenty. After that, I was strongly for Cain, but then his "foot-in-mouth" disease got me concerned. Soon after, I was on the Bachmann bandwagon, but then she just didn't seem to have what it takes. Then I got really excited about Perry - until I saw him flounder in the debates. Now, I'm thinking strongly about Cain again. Gingrich has caught my attention, but I'm having a hard time getting past his rendezvous on the couch with Pelosi. Unlike Dems, I'm not guided by gender or race. I'm looking at ideology and who I think has the best chance of beating the anointed one.

Submitted by c5then on Thu, 11/03/2011 - 11:35am.

Because obviously the only valid way for a black person to run for office is as a Democrat.

The more these idiots are exposed to the heartland of this country, the more they will create the groundswell of conservative victories that are required for us to turn this country around and get back on the correct path to liberty and thus prosperity.

There is no such thing as collective salvation. The government taking care of certain people does not abrogate an individuals responsibility to help their fellow neighbor. All the government getting involved does is create all kinds of red-tape and regulations that make it harder for people to help each other. As more and more people realize this, they will also realize that the democrat party is the cause of most of our problems. Because they are always trying to solve the problem of poverty (an unsolvable problem) they have driven this country to the very edge of bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, the very same people who say thay are trying to help, get completely indignant when someone they think should need help doesn't and has the temerity and gall to stand up and tell people to help themselves and not to depend on the government. Why is this? It's because they really don't care about helping anybody but are more interested in the power and prestige that being seen trying to "help" brings to themselves.

Supporting Cain because of his unabashed conservative principles serves my own purpose in candidacy, psychological and otherwise. Race has about as much to do with it as curling (either the sport or, as I'm bald, the iron).

Liberal aversion to facts and logic in action.

Submitted by Phryj1 on Thu, 11/03/2011 - 1:02pm.

Toure and other libs have to engage in sophistry and insane troll logic in order to try to accuse conservatives of racism. It's just like how libs will use any change in weather as evidence of man-made global warming.

And this is what libs call 'intellectualism'!

It is amusing to watch two liberals desperately clinging to a lie and trying to salvage it. Sad, pathetic morons.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.
