Olbermann Signs Off from MSNBC’s Countdown for Last Time
On Friday’s Countdown show on MSNBC, host Keith Olbermann announced that the episode would be his last, and spent a few minutes near the end of the show saying goodbye. He mentioned a number of infamous and pivotal points in his show’s history when he went after the Bush administration:
The show gradually established its position as anti-establishment from the stagecraft of "Mission Accomplished," to the exaggerated rescue of Jessica Lynch in Iraq, to the death of Pat Tillman to Hurricane Katrina, to the "Nexus of Politics and Terror," to the first "Special Comment."
As he listed a number of prominent supporters of his show, he ended up notably giving credit to the late Tim Russert of NBC for being "my greatest protector, and most indefatigable cheerleader."
Below the fold is the video and a complete transcript of Olbermann's announcement from the Friday, January 21, Countdown show on MSNBC, from about 8:53 p.m.:
I think the same fantasy has popped into the head of everybody in my business who has ever been told what I’ve been told, that this is going to be the last edition of your show. You go directly to the scene from the movie Network - complete with the pajamas and the rain coat - and you go off on an existential, other worldly verbal journey of unutterable profundity and vision, you damn the impediments, and you insist upon the insurrections, and then you emit Peter Finch's guttural resonant, "So." And you implore, you will the viewer to go to the window, open it, stick out his head and yell, well, you know the rest.
In the mundane world of television goodbyes, reality is laughably uncooperative. When I resigned from ESPN 13 1/2 years ago, I was literally given 30 seconds to say goodbye at the very end of my last edition of Sports Center. As God is my witness, in the commercial break just before the emotional moment, the producer got into my earpiece and he said, "Um, can you cut it down to 15 seconds so we can get in the tennis result from Stutgardt?"
So I'm grateful that I have a little more time to sign off here. Regardless, this is the last edition of Countdown. It is just under eight years since I returned to MSNBC. I was supposed to fill in for the late Jerry Nachman for exactly three days. Forty-nine days later, there was a four-year contract for me to return to this nightly 8 p.m. time slot which I had fled four years earlier.
The program grew and grew thanks entirely to your support, with great rewards for me, and, I hope, for you, too, though on many occasions, particularly in the last two and a half years, where all that surrounded the show - but never the show itself - was just too much for me. But your support and loyalty - and if I may use the word "insistence" - ultimately required that I keep going. My gratitude to you is boundless, and if you think I’ve done any good here, imagine how it looked from this end as you donated $2 million to the National Association of Free Clinics, and my dying father watched from his hospital bed, transcendentally comforted that his struggles were inspiring such overwhelming good for people, he and I and you would never meet, but would always know.
This may be the only television program wherein the host was much more in awe of the audience than vice versa. You will always be in my heart for that and for the donations to the Cranik family in Tennessee and these victims of governmental heartlessness in Arizona, to say nothing of every letter and email and Tweet and wave and handshake and online petition. Time ebbs here, and I want to close with one more Thurber story. It is still Friday.
So let me thank my gifted staff here and just a few of the many people here who fought with me and for me. Eric Sorensen, Phil Alangi, Neal Shapiro, Michael Weissman, the late David Bloom, John Palmer, Alana Russo, Monica Novotny, my dear friends Rachel Maddow and Bob Costas and my greatest protector, and most indefatigable cheerleader, the late Tim Russert. And now, let me finish by turning again to this ritual of reading Thurber stories to you.

I hope he stays gone, and that he never opens his foul mouth again. Nor do I want him to write anything, nor in any way use any form of media to ever again spread the diseased insanity that he calls 'reporting'.
Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say. Stay gone, Olberdork. You'll not be missed, and the world is a better place for your silence.

Obies biggest contribution to the Left was his ability to give voice to the frustrations and anger of those on the Left who saw their nonsensical and delusional ideas being constantly swept aside by the reality of how things actually work. To those of us who live in a world of three dimensions and solid objects, listening to olbermann speak to his followers was often akin to trying to hear a tune from a dog whistle.

Wait till comcast applies what is essentially the Fairness Doctrine on MSNBC and put on balance by having a Conservative show. Liberal Loons will foam and froth at the mouth.
I actually hope a balanced format is adopted. I'm not the least concerned about reasoned debate of Liberal and Conservative ideas. They always lose. That's why they always resort to charactor assassination.
Besides a Conservative MSNBC show will be good competition for the same type from FOX. Competition makes for better shows. And better shows makes for more viewers of Conservative voices.
Plus if comcast starts making money because of a better balance how long will the other outlets hold out, in their slide to obscurity, before they make the necessary changes?

Plus Olberdork is like the liberal news' version of Barbara Streisand. The stupid jerk just won't go away, no matter how many 'farewell tours' he announces. So I just take this as another of his childish pleas for attention, or maybe trying to double his ratings by getting ONE more viewer.

The MSNBC execs have wanted to ditch Olbermann for a while. He is notoriously difficult to work with and so it is not surprising that those who work closest with him like him the least. However, as the channels top rated host the suits at NBC corporate have protected him from a far. Phil Griffin tried to force him out with the contribution/suspension episode but was quickly overruled from above. Now that the Comcast's purchase is done many of the NBC top brass are out and I think Griffin and co. are exploiting the opening to kick Keith to the curb.

I'd bet " FOX NEWS " fairs better between the pages than GE/NBC when all is said & done.
Keith took a gamble to make his show the anti " FOX " and Zucker foolishly took the rest of the daily line up down the same misguided path.

I don't believe the Obama administration had any hand in this for one simple reason; they think like Olbermann.
The presidents call for civility was a PR stunt, nothing more, nothing less. He has come to realize that his divisive rhetoric would hurt him in 2012, so he has laid down a gauntlet to the media and others to behave. While he may abide by his own edict, his minions in congress and the MSM will continue to rant and spew lies and hate towards conservatives. This method of attack will be far more beneficial to him, for as he appears to be above it all, his underlings and the media will carry the torch of deceit and demonization, with tacit approval from the White House. Any attempts to blame Obama for not controlling the issue will be spun as, 'we cannot control the media, nor would we try'. It is a no lose proposition for him.

I just saw this on Fox. Don't be too happy. Lawrence O'Donnell is going to replace him. One POS for another POS is not much to celebrate. We can celebrate when Comcast fires them all from Joe Smoe to Madcow.
Never fear. He can't keep his mouth shut so I'd be willing to give odds he winds up on Sirius Radio's The Left or POTUS-Politics of the US. Both channels cater to the far left loons. He could wind up on Rosie Radio. I really really believe he is like a bad dream, he'll return. You know that Obama needs him to carry water in 2012.

Unless Comcast asked the others to cool it and they complied?

I think I tried to watch this persons show once. Got maybe thirty seconds of viewing time in before I decided he was a total imbecile. (I don't usually use such terminology to describe other people, as I detest name calling as a form of debating the issues, but in this case I'm not really calling him a name, he truly is an imbecile. This means his mental faculties are somewhat retarded, and this is not his fault. He was born that way, and then what little he's been able to learn has become a jumbled mess in his brain) I also decided MSNBC was not worth the time it takes to channel surf past their station. I don't think they'll get any better with comcast calling the shots, but I may be wrong. I was wrong once. When I first got out of high school I thought James Earl Carter would be a good President. Within 2 years I finally understood what socialism can do to destroy a country. I've lived to see this process being repeated with Barack Hussein Obama. I suppose it's something that needs to happen every couple of generations to teach young people why a "National socialist party" (In German that is what NAZI meant, despite the lefts attempts to revise history and tell the world it's rightwing) is not a good idea. So now that our socialists parties biggest clown propagandist is gone, I suppose they can find some huge feet somewhere to fit the clown shoes. (I don't mean to offend anyone out there who works as a real clown for a living. All work for profit is good and honorable if it is within the law) I hope he gets a job for some other far leftist network and destroys what little of their reputation remains also. People like him are some of the best campaigners for the conservative message. All one needs do is listen for about a half of a minute and, if you have any common sense, you'll understand who you need to be voting for. That would be the person he hates most. The socialists are letting us know whom they fear most by the crazed rhetoric and vitriolic sputterings they make. That would be the Tea Party and the Lady who campaigns for them tirelessly and more articulately than anyone on the left side of the isle can speak of their own message, Sarah Palin.
Mr. Olberman, take some of that money you've made from General Electric, and invest it wisely, and you should never have to work again. Try enjoying life for a change. You may find the world isn't such a bad place. Yes sometimes bad things happen to good people, but in the end we all end up dead anyway, so at least try to be happy for some of your life. Otherwise you've just thrown away what God gave you to enjoy his creation with.
God Bless America, and God bless all of his creation. Give us the stregth to cope with the temptations and the trials that Satan puts in our paths and keep us focused on what is good and righteous in the world. Lord I pray in your name, Amen

We've had a lot of fun with this. I think are the celebration is premature. Remmber the Munchkins celebrating the death of the wicked witch? There were more witches out there just like there are more idiots on MESSNBC that need to go. I am wating to celebrate when CNN and MESNBC finally realizes that liberalism doesn't sell especially with the loonatic hosts they have on both networks. I am also wating until Fox cans Geraldo. That will be worth celebrating.

Let's not get too snarky, people. Most of the comments here seem to be excessively celebratory in nature, the same type of celebrations the left would have at Huffington Post over, say, Glen Beck getting the boot.
So, Keith Olbermann will no longer host Countdown? I really don't care. The show itself remains, so I'm sure there will be plenty of liberal material for NewsBusters to highlight.

"Sources say"
Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 01/22/2011 - 1:34pm.
By the way, a lot of the liberal sites, the Huffington Post included, are claiming that "sources inside MSNBC" say that he's getting the boot because of his actions regarding those controversial political donations, that instead of apologizing for violating company policy as he was asked (or ordered) to do, he turn it into an anti-censure crusade against the very people who employ him. If true, publicly attacking your own employers on the very show THEY provided you isn't a good way to remain employed, as he has recently learned. Not that it affects his POCKETBOOK much, but that has to affect his self-image. I wonder if this will teach him some humility?
