FNC’s Colmes: ‘Tea Party Was a Bunch of Angry White Guys’ with ‘Racist Signs’

By Brad Wilmouth | January 01, 2011 | 20:06

A  A

On Saturday’s Fox News Watch, liberal FNC analyst Alan Colmes asserted that the Tea Party was a "bunch of angry white guys who went around and put up racist signs." As a debate ensued pitting Colmes against the other three panel members, he later defiantly asked, "How many blacks did they elect?" leading Jim Pinkerton of the New America Foundation to fire back: "The Tea Partiers elected two - Allen West and Tim Scott, Florida and South Carolina."

Host Jon Scott began the segment by assuming that the liberal Colmes would not have any complaints about the mainstream media’s coverage of the elections. After Colmes voiced his approval of the media, Scott sarcastically posed: "For instance, the Tea Party. Tea Party always got favorable coverage, right? Or fair coverage?"

Colmes then unleashed on the Tea Party: "Oh, they got, look, the Tea Party was a bunch of angry white guys who went around and put up racist signs at these at, these events on lawn chairs who had nothing better to do on weekends than sit on lawn chairs with signs suggesting Obama was a Muslim who wasn’t born in this country."

Colmes also clashed with the more centrist Judy Miller who argued that there were also many "mama grizzlies" at Tea Party rallies. The liberal analyst dismissively responded: "I’m sure there were a few mama grizzlies there."

Pinkerton also brought up an infamous example - documented at the time by NewsBusters - of MSNBC using a clip of a black Tea Party activist with a gun, showing him from the waist down only, during a report linking the Tea Party to racist sentiments without showing viewers that he was black. Pinkerton: "The best example was the guy at some Tea Party rally, and they showed a picture - he was carrying a gun - and MSNBC ran the picture of him saying here’s a Tea Partier with a gun, and then somebody else found out the picture was actually an African-American guy "

Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Saturday, January 1, Fox News Watch:

JON SCOTT: Alan, I’m going to guess that you think the media coverage of the elections was pretty fair.

ALAN COLMES: I think they were pretty fair. I mean, are you going to say they’re not? Is that the meme of this show? To knock the media for that?

SCOTT: For instance, the Tea Party. Tea Party always got favorable coverage, right? Or fair coverage?

COLMES: Oh, they got, look, the Tea Party was a bunch of angry white guys who went around and put up racist signs at these-

JUDY MILLER: Angry white guys?

COLMES: -at these events on lawn chairs who had nothing better to do on weekends than sit on lawn chairs with signs suggesting Obama was a Muslim who wasn’t born in this country.

JIM PINKERTON: Give Alan credit for summarizing the mainstream media-

COLMES: Oh, the mainstream media, the evil mainstream media.

PINKERTON: Alan just did it.

...

CAL THOMAS: We’ve seen this media blindness before. We saw it in 1979, 1980 when Bill Moyers came on PBS wondering where all these church-going, flag-waving, patriotic people came from. They didn’t know because they don’t hang out on Sunday mornings or in other places where these conservatives go. We saw the same thing with the Tea Party movement. The media are always shocked, shocked to see these people turn up at the polls and actually do something.

COLMES: How many blacks did they elect? How many blacks are in the Republican Party? How many Hispanics did they elect?

PINKERTON: The Tea Partiers elected two - Allen West and Tim Scott, Florida and South Carolina.

THOMAS: You’re just a counter, that’s all.

COLMES: I’m a counter?

THOMAS: Yeah, you’re a counter

COLMES: No, I’m actually a chair. What do you mean, I’m a counter.

THOMAS: Well, you know, you go by numbers that if you don’t have the exact balance.

COLMES: I’m simply saying, you’re going to tell me, wait a minute, you believe the Tea Party is not basically a white male movement? You don’t think that?

THOMAS: Not all male, no. Look at the women who were elected. Look at the ones who were-

PINKERTON: Tell that to Nikki Haley-

THOMAS: Exactly what I’m saying.

PINKERTON: -Sharron Angle, Christine O’Donnell.

COLMES: But I’m saying, look at these rallies, you look who’s there, and you look at what the profile is.

MILLER: I saw an awful lot of women.

COLMES: I mean, the Republicans needed to get a black guy to head the RNC in order to make it look fair and balanced.

PINKERTON: The Republicans hired a black guy to prove they weren’t racist?

COLMES: Yeah, right. Look, let’s bear one thing in mind. This country is ethnically 70 percent white. Okay, in any given random group of people-

COLMES: Not for long.

PINKERTON: Well, okay, right now, three-fourths of the people in a crowd will be white. And if that offends you, too bad.

COLMES: No, but it’s more than three fourths people at the - it doesn’t offend me, Jim - but more than three-fourths of the people at these events were white and male.

PINKERTON: It does seem to offend, it does seem to offend you. You call them racist.

MILLER: They were not male.

COLMES: Of course they were.

MILLER: There were many, many women. There were mama grizzles, as Sarah Palin called them.

COLMES: I’m sure there were a few mama grizzlies there.

MILLER: There were many mama grizzlies.

PINKERTON: The best example was the guy at some Tea Party rally, and they showed a picture - he was carrying a gun - and MSNBC ran the picture of him saying here’s a Tea Partier with a gun, and then somebody else found out the picture was actually an African-American guy

Why did they invite Colmes on

Submitted by Chris Norman on Sat, 01/01/2011 - 8:47pm.

Why did they invite Colmes on this show? He obviously has nothing but contempt for it's premise and everyone else on it. He contributed nothing to the discussion except his ridiculous one-liners. He was nothing but a distraction. They could have on Miller and Kirsten Powers and other liberals, but they keep bringing on Colmes or Ellis Hennican who won't even dicuss or address the topic of bias. With them on it, the show usually devolves into a discussion of the political issues themselves, not the media's coverage of them. NewsWatch used to be my favorite show on Fox News. Now, I don't watch it at all.

Submitted by mostlymoderate on Sat, 01/01/2011 - 9:30pm.

The liberals like Colmes are basically saying that it is de-facto racism if too many white people congregate together for anything, even though race has nothing to do with it.  It's why television shows insist on the awkwardly placed "token" or why golf didn't make the morning news until Tiger Woods entered the game.  It's why guys like Bryant Gumble say the Winter Olympics i"look like the G.O.P."  I could go on but you get the picture.

I've always thought it to be

Submitted by Smartypants on Sat, 01/01/2011 - 9:39pm.

I've always thought it to be pretty odd that, when people gather for any purpose and most of them happen to be white, the media blames the particular group of people because more minorities did not show up.  Point out where exactly the Tea Party excluded minorities from its functions.  In fact, many minorities have spoken at these events.  So, it is the fault of the people there that more minorities did not show up?  This is a ludicrous perspective.  The Winter Olympics are no different, but Bryant Gumbel and his small mind cannot comprehend the fact it is not the fault of anybody in particular that more minorities do not participate in winter sporting events, or that more black people do not show up to watch the Winter Olympics.

It all goes back to the

Submitted by mostlymoderate on Sat, 01/01/2011 - 9:52pm.

It all goes back to the liberal mentality of creating "victimhood" when there really isn't any racism going on.  Vanity Fair took some of the most beautiful blond women in Hollywood and put them all on the cover.  Well, that was deemed racist.  Too many white people in one place.  The T.V. show "The Bachelor" is being called racist (mostly stoked by rags like NewsWeek) because most of the male contestants are white.  Also, when a white IS a contestant, he only has white women to choose from.  The show broke the ultimate rule of having too many white people in one area.

Victimhood.  It Pays The Bills.

P.S. Google "Lord of the Rings" and "Racist".  Lots of folks are saying LOTR is racist because there are no tokens.  Same with Harry Potter.

Dean Thomas is who you're

Submitted by ThatDude on Sun, 01/02/2011 - 11:18am.

Dean Thomas is who you're thinking of.

There's also the Patil sisters and Cho Chang. Seems to me that HP also has its tokens (though relatively proportional to each race's representation in the UK.) This eternal focus on race by the left IS racism, and they push their form of racism using the word "diversity."

Let's try for some diversity of opinion and take a step away from the sheep mentality that comes from race-based politics and group identification. I would think most people of conservative libertarian ideology would identify themselves as an individual with affinities and traits common to different groups without allowing the group to identify them as a whole. I appreciate the goal of the tea party and I vote Republican, but like any sentient being, I refuse to let the actions of others define me and therefore will not be labeled as either.

Can't find an honest Democrat

Submitted by ron8072 on Sat, 01/01/2011 - 9:46pm.

There used to be a definite meaningful difference between liberals and conservatives.  Now, the liberals see themselves as so much smarter than everyone else, they see no need to research anything.  Everything they honestly think, they heard from a liberal, and a liberal would never lie, now would they?  In other words, if a liberal makes a statement, it is automatically a fact.  For the liberals, the only liars are the conservatives.  Who cares about truth?  How long has it been since you had a discussion with a liberal that didn't devolve into one of several liberal talking points?  I don't know about you, but for me it has been a long time.  I can remember the first discussion about what was happening in Iraq and a liberal friend  said that Bush was dumb.  After that any discussion was impossible.  I either had to agree that Bush was dumb or there was nothing further to discuss.  Sad.

Just a reminder of why 9 p.m. is much more enjoyable

Submitted by Cape Conservative on Sat, 01/01/2011 - 10:21pm.

Don't miss Alan Colmes one bit!  He's just one more arrogant progressive who sees what he wants to see...NOT what is actually there!  He joins Pelosi in the Hall of Shame for her 'astro-turf' description, when it was the progressives who had to pay people (union hacks) to attend their events while tea partiers footed their own expense - and the black congressman who insisted a tea partier had called him names and spit on him.  Yet no one could come up with one video or picture of said offense even though Andrew Breitbart offered $100,000 for one.

At every Cape Cod tea party gathering (some held in Hyannis near the Kennedy Compound), there were young families, retired folks, many men and lots of 'mama grizzlies'!   And NOT ONE nasty sign to be seen anywhere!!!!  UNLIKE the signs carried by the progressives during the recent election!  And need we go into detail of the filthy rotten character assassinations that took place in races all across the country by those same Democrats that Alan Colmes  tries to hold up as pure as the new driven snow????????  He makes me want to VOMIT!

This comment comes from a proud Tea Party mama grizzly, otherwise designated by Homeland Security as a Domestic Right Wing Terrorist!

Submitted by NL207 on Sat, 01/01/2011 - 11:49pm.

The proof lies in his inability to see the Tea Party for what it actually is: a genuine grassroots movement of ordinary people.   What the TEA Party is advancing is so alien to him that he can neither comprehend it nor explain it in any other terms except racism.  It is clearly NOT racism.  In fact, it has nothing to do with race at all but instead addresses government fiscal irresponsibility.  Colmes cannot even come to grips with the naked truth the Liberals are spending us into bankruptcy so he explains away opposition to this spending spree as racism.

I think he's a liar and a charlatan. He knows what he's saying isn't true. He knows that the people at those rallies aren't racists. He says it anyway to denigrate the opposition. He know's it's a lie. That's why he has a smirk on his face when he says it.

Colmes drank the kool-aid ...

Submitted by NL207 on Sun, 01/02/2011 - 1:08am.

He is a true believer.  His God is Liberalism.  You, me and the TEA Party oppose Liberalism.  Therefore in Alan Colmes eyes we are all heretics.  One of the tenets of Liberalism is anybody who is white, male, and not liberal is by definition a racist.   Colmes applied this rule to the TEA Party.

I will argue Colmes interprets all observations in the context of Liberalism and rejects any 'facts' that contradict his belief system.  Denial.  Colmes does not lie because he truly believes what he says is fact : "the TEA Party is racist", he truly believes this.  Does this make him mentally ill?  Some people argue that is the case.  Rush Limbaugh often argues that Liberalism is a mental disease.  Where do we draw the line between the fool and the nut case?

I never thought Colmes was the brightest bulb in the chandelier and he certainly proved it on this topic.  Very seldom does this show get to a 3 - 1 situation, usually the liberals stick together.  If you couldn't say enough correct to have Judy Miller on your side, you've really screwed up.

My favorite media bias situation, when it comes to the tea parties, was the D.C. rally where Kelly O'Donnell went out and found a black guy at the rally and asked him if he felt uncomfortable.  He said,  "No. These are my people. Americans."  She was certainly shocked.  It was a pretty funny moment.  I wish I was there I'd have shaken that guys hand.

Interesting to me how SMUG Colmes and his ilk are

Submitted by TexasMom0517 on Sun, 01/02/2011 - 12:19am.

I'm always amused by the arrogance and hypocrisy of the Professional Left.  Whether it's Colmes (self-indentified Liberal), Scarborough (absurdly self-identified "conservative"- stop me before I fall down laughing), Mika Brezenski (self-identified Liberal), or any of the Liberals who populate the lame stream media, they possess a hubris that knows no bounds.  They have an overweaning pride about their intelligence (much of which seems quite undeserved), their "tolerance" (belied by their vicious personal attacks on those with whom they disagree), and their "compassion" (only for the annointed victim class, while perpetuating policies to maintain their status in that position in society).

I was grateful when Hannity no longer had to put up with Colmes- he was such a smug and pompous snob with minimal critical reasoning skills.  He merely parrots the lines supplied by Podesta and Media Matters, without regard to facts or data.  I would welcome a good debate if it were supported by facts.  The Professional Left cannot stand facts, they interfere with their narrative.

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Sun, 01/02/2011 - 1:50am.

This argument just goes to show how insular the hard left really is.  The only people who buy this "Tea party people are racists" line are the die-hard leftists that already are die-hard leftists.  Conservatives know it's crap and even most moderates have grown weary of the everything-is-racism arguments that bombard them daily.  11/2 proved the argument just didn't work, but the hard left voices in the media still keep repeating it.  The only reason these talking heads think it works must be due to their being surrounded by likeminded leftists in their daily lives.  Why else would they keep saying this if it was not the case?  I swear these people live in an echo chamber.

Why Fox continues to keep Colmes on the payroll...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Sun, 01/02/2011 - 3:23am.

I'll never know...He brings absolutely nothing of any constructive use to any discussion that he's involved in. Colmes' rhetoric is 100% pure unthinking, illogical liberal bs. At least most of the liberal "contributors" that Fox has on are somewhat reasonable and rational in their discourse, but not Colmes. I can usually guess almost exactly what his position will be before he even opens his mouth, he is so predictable. All we ever hear from him is liberal Democratic bs. I'm at the point now that whenever he comes on the screen, I immediately change the channel or hit the mute button...How Sean Hannity ever tolerated him for as long as he did is a mystery to me...Five brief minutes of looking at his ugly mug and listening to his tiresome libnut crap is all I would ever have been able to stand.

Hannity and Colmes

Submitted by Skragnon on Sun, 01/02/2011 - 11:57am.

I used to watch Hannity and Colmes on a regular basis because Alan came off as a relatively rational liberal (I know, oxymoron).

The point being that Alan might have believed in the cause, he wasn't a Kool-ade drinker on most subjects.  To me Alan was allowed to exhibit the calm discussion of liberalism, even if it was wrong, because of the desire for open debate.

Now, since he has moved to his own radio show, I've seen the fall of Alan into the gutter politics of talking over your opponents and derision of their stances.  Debate is no longer allowed, you can only believe what the party tells you.

i was getting angry last night because I couldn't hear the others on the show with Alan spouting the party line over the top of them all.

Alan's "Views Buster"

Submitted by serendipity on Tue, 01/04/2011 - 1:51am.

Real Clear Politics - October 3, 2010:

Of the 39 black Democrats in the House, all but two represent districts where blacks are a majority or plurality. One other black Democratic contender is running in a white majority district. So in this election, Republicans are running more blacks in white majority districts than the Democrats are. Shouldn't that be taken into consideration when accusations of racism are being hurled about?

Accusations of racism against Republicans are a staple of Democratic politics because Democrats need to keep blacks on the plantation to remain viable nationally. "Young people and minorities are all the president has left," the National Journal headlined its story on a poll released Wednesday.

 Enough said.
