BBC’s Kay Suggests Tea Partiers Put Beating Obama Ahead of ‘Country’s Interest,’ Opposing Obama is Alternative to ‘Competence’

By Brad Wilmouth | November 21, 2010 | 12:30

A  A

Appearing as a panel member on Sunday’s syndicated Chris Matthews Show, the BBC’s Katty Kay suggested that Tea Partiers are willing to go against the "country’s interest" rather than to "deal" with President Obama. Kay: " And if there is going to be a wing of the Republican Party that says, do not on any issue, on any case, even on its merits, compromise with the President, it’s gonna be the Tea Party. And if the Tea Party is driving the energy in the Republican Party ... Republicans in Congress are going to have to look very carefully at how they deal with them. And the Tea Party is saying we don’t care about whether it’s in the country’s interest, in our foreign policy interest, in our economic interest necessarily to deal with the President."

A bit later, as she speculated about whether obstruction by the GOP would be rewarded or punished in 2012, she seemed to suggest that "competence" would involve compromising with President Obama as she used the word as the alternative to standing on "principle" and opposing Obama. Kay: "I think this is the biggest point that, I mean, the point that Dan raises about in 2012. Will voters more reward competence and actions that have been seen to be effective for the country? Or will they reward politicians who stood on principle and oppose the White House expansionist agenda, as they see it?"

And during the "Tell Me Something I Don’t Know" segment, she also spoke favorably of a proposal to use a soda tax to reduce the federal budget deficit: "In both the bipartisan plans that are out there at the moment, that have come out in the last 10 days to reduce the deficit, one item is the proposition to put a tax on sodas. This makes sense in terms of health of Americans. It also makes sense in terms of reducing the deficit. It would, of course, raise revenue. It will go absolutely nowhere because people think that it’s ,indicative of a nanny state, and they don’t want it."

Below is a transcript of relevant portions of the Sunday, November 21, syndicated Chris Matthews Show:

KATTY KAY: And if there is going to be a division, and if there is going to be a wing of the Republican Party that says, do not on any issue, on any case, even on its merits, compromise with the President, it’s gonna be the Tea Party. And if the Tea Party is driving the energy in the Republican Party, Republicans in Washington, Republicans in Congress are going to have to look very carefully at how they deal with them. And the Tea Party is saying we don’t care about whether it’s in the country’s interest, in our foreign policy interest, in our economic interest necessarily to deal with the President. What we want is to be the party that obstructs Barack Obama. Many of them ran specifically on stopping and on checking Barack Obama, and so that is their priority. And the establishment is going to have to either listen to them or try and find a way to overcome that energy.

...

KAY: But I think this is the biggest point that, I mean, the point that Dan raises about in 2012. Will voters more reward competence and actions that have been seen to be effective for the country? Or will they reward politicians who stood on principle and opposes the White House expansionist agenda, as they see it? I expect it’s actually going to be some mixture of the two.

...

KAY: In both the bipartisan plans that are out there at the moment, that have come out in the last 10 days to reduce the deficit, one item is the proposition to put a tax on sodas. This makes sense in terms of health of Americans. It also makes sense in terms of reducing the deficit. It would, of course, raise revenue. It will go absolutely nowhere because people think that it’s ,indicative of a nanny state, and they don’t want it.

Well, then,

Submitted by UpNorth on Sun, 11/21/2010 - 12:53pm.

it's settled, Katty Kat says taxes are good, principles are bad.  Seriously?  Raising taxes on pop will decrease the deficit?

But, Brad, I do have to correct one thing  you said, " Below is a transcript of relevant portions of the Sunday, November 21, syndicated Chris Matthews Show".  There are no "relevant portions" of anything Sissy Chrissy does.

We were in europe election

Submitted by danbo on Sun, 11/21/2010 - 12:59pm.

We were in europe election day.

It was a trip to watch an interview on the BBC with one of the new Republicans congressmen. Who told the new congressman he knew what the American people wanted due to their exit polling. And that the American people wanted someone who would work with the administration to end grid lock.

Of course the fact that a very big exit poll had just been done. I called it an election. And anyone who wanted someone to do what Obama wanted only had to vote democratic, was totally lost.

The only ones more clueless than the BBC was CNN International. (Sadly much of the reason Europeans have little clue as to what's going on in America is CNN International.)

Have a great day all.

Submitted by mattm on Sun, 11/21/2010 - 1:57pm.

They just can't seem to wrap their tiny little heads around the idea that alot of people didn't fall for the "Obama-is-savior" BS, and believe his plan is exactly the wrong for the country.

It must be part of their arrogant ideological myopia - i.e. In their minds it's not that other ideas are wrong. it's that there ARE no other ideas.

That's right

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 11/21/2010 - 10:41pm.

The Left remains oblivious to the political tectonics beneath their webbed feet.

The reason that the GOP did so well despite having no higher approval ratings among voters than the Dems, is because Americans want to stop the impulsive recklessness of Obama-ism.  More than half the country disapproves of our President's performance, which speaks volumes about his lack of competence.

But twits like Kay can't come to grips with it.  It's as if they are saying, "Okay, the Republicans did very well in the election.  Now, how to they help him get the rest of his agenda through."

Frankly, when it comes to government competence, Kay need only look at her own country's trevails.  Britain's prime minister recently proposed that government spending be cut 20% across the board to save the economy, while raIsing the VAT from 17.5% TO 20%.  Meanwhile, the country is coping with pending doom by gushing over the engagement of a hot 28 year old woman to their  precious Prince Willie -  son of Diana, Goddess of Self-Indulgence & Collectable Plates, and Prince Charley, the Clown Prince.  Spare us the lecture, Ms. Kay.

The BBC and the rest of the European elite are scared to death that something similar to the Tea Party movement will take hold there as well.  They know exactly what is going on, so they try to discredit the Tea Partiers in a desperate attempt to nip it in the bud.

Liberals (Marxists) think Obama is good. (Guess why?) Therefore, anyone who opposes him is bad. Tea Party, or Whatever Party. The US Democratic Party has outed itself: They are Marxists. They are out to force their will onto the people of America. Any resistance is the effort of bad people according to them. Wherever people are truly free, socialism/communism will be thoroughly rejected. Case closed.

Beating obama

The leftists didn't seem to mind so much when obama beat McCain. Justified, they said. Good for the country, they bleated. Will bring hope and change, they promised.

But it's racist and selfish and wrong to beat obama? Since when do these small-minded little twerps get to define what's good and bad for us? Who the he$$ gave them the job of thinking for all of us?

Who's best interest?

Submitted by CobraMan on Sun, 11/21/2010 - 5:46pm.

After the "shellacking" Obama and the democrats took in the last election, I would have to say that it's in America's best interest that Obama deal with the Tea Party conservatives, instead of the other way around.  After all, it wasn't the Liberals who sent Obama a resounding message this last election by wining an overwhelming majority of political offices (don't forget those State, County, and local victories, as they count more than the federal victories do, and they always have.).

Obama and the rest of the democrats, let me give to a piece of advice:  You better do as the citizens, though their newly elected representatives in government, want, or you'll find yourselves so far out of power that not even an act of God will return you to prominence for years, possibly decades, to come.  WE don't have to "compromise" with you,. YOU have to "compromise" with US, or you'll soon be known and the "Former Democratic Party." The Conservatives are in control of the majority of Federal, State, and local governments because that's what We, The People, want,  got it?

England is as messed up as the US will be under the Obama administration because they believe in hand outs from the government.

On the question of Obama's competence...

Submitted by tanstaafl4 on Mon, 11/22/2010 - 11:56am.

..."Katty" would do well to read her intellectual betters, such as Charles Krauthammer, who writes of the "ideological overreach" and "incompetence of governing democrats."

Or Krauthammer's observation that Barack Obama's problems are "...completely self-inflicted by a man who doesn't have executive experience."
