Olbermann: FNC & Conservative Side ‘Close to Playing With Its Own Poop,’ ‘Better Off’ If They ‘Didn’t Live in This Country’

By Brad Wilmouth | November 19, 2010 | 01:59

A  A

On Thursday’s Countdown show on MSNBC, after guest Howard Fineman of the Huffington Post predicted that Republican Congressmen would be reluctant to extend unemployment benefits, host Keith Olbermann asserted that, referring to congressional Republicans, "They don't live in this world. They don't live in this country. And I think we'd be better off if they didn't live in this country."

Later, during the show’s "Worst Person" segment, Olbermann attacked FNC’s Roger Ailes for the second consecutive night - this time for his recent attack on NPR and Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart. Olbermann addressed Stewart directly, suggesting that the Daily Show host was wrong to lump MSNBC in with his criticism of FNC, and also suggesting that the side representing FNC and conservatives is "close to playing with its poop." Olbermann: "Thanks to Mr. Ailes for proving my point about false equivalence. And an aside to Mr. Stewart: Jon, I told you so. I mean, I might disagree with you, but I'd never think you were crazy or hateful. But Maher is right. One side sticks to the facts, and the other side is close to playing with its own poop."

Below are transcripts of relevant portions of the Thursday, November 18, Countdown show on MSNBC:

KEITH OLBERMANN: In the year and a half that Jeanne Reinman watched her savings and retirement drain away, the members of Congress now blocking her unemployment benefits saw their net worth increase dramatically. In 2008 through the end of 2009, their wealth growing by an average of more than 16 percent. This is according to a new study by the Center for Responsive Politics. While Americans lost their jobs, their homes and their savings, watching retirement and their kids' college educations fade from possibility, Congress watched its number of millionaires increase - 49 percent, nearly half of them, 261 out of 535, are now millionaires compared to one percent of America; 55 of them - more than 10 percent - are now worth more than $10 million. Eight of those are worth at least 100 million. The median wealth of every member of Congress last year was $911,150.

Individual congressional wealth leaped more than $100,000 in just one year. It was just $785,000 in 2008. The richest of them all, Republican Congressman Darrell Issa of California with a net worth of 303 million. And, as I sit here wondering what kind of nation we want to live in, let's bring in MSNBC political analyst Howard Fineman, also senior political editor of the Huffington Post. Good evening, Howard.

HOWARD FINEMAN, HUFFINGTON POST: Hi, Keith.

OLBERMANN: We have a political party demanding that we borrow money to pay for tax cuts on household income above a quarter million while it is at the same time refusing to borrow a lot less money so that middle class Americans who can’t find work can keep their homes and just barely keep their heads above water. Can you put that into context with the findings of this new study on congressional wealth?

FINEMAN: Well, Keith, the members of Congress don't have to suffer in silence on national television the way Ms. Reinman just did. When you asked her that question, I thought the most eloquent thing she said was what see didn’t say when she couldn't speak because of the embarrassment and the confusion, of being an educated middle class person who now finds herself in the situation she's in. And that's what makes the contrast so excruciating. The members of Congress are insulated in many, many ways here. And even though they're supposed to represent the people, I think the month they get here, or even before they come here, given what it takes to run for office now - don’t forget a lot of these people are self-funders now, a lot of it's their money - they get here and that keeps them even farther away from the people.

OLBERMANN: Do they not get that they don't look like America? I mean, are they pushing for these tax cuts for $250,000 and up because it benefits them?

FINEMAN: No, I don't think in most cases it's that, but I think they're definitely cut off here, Keith. It's the nature of politics today which, as I said, favors wealthy people who run, number one. Number two, the Washington area is not like the rest of America. A new Forbes study showed that nine of the wealthiest 14 counties in America are in the Washington metropolitan area. Then, when you’re in Congress, you have platinum-level health care, you have great pensions, you have a very good salary, you’re a member of the investor class, not the working class. And you’re divorced not even from, not just from people on the shop floor or people who are poor, you are now disengaged from middle class America. That's what's so stark about this gulf, Keith. It's not between the richest and the poorest. This is not your grandfather's depression with the soup lines or your father's recession of 25 years ago. This is a thing where the gulf is between the leaders and the led between the wealthy in Congress and between middle class people that they used to be part of.

OLBERMANN: What happens now? I mean, do Democrats cave on these Bush tax cuts for the rich in order to extend the unemployment benefits? And how does the GOP justify borrowing twice as much for that?

FINEMAN: Well, first of all, the problem is that the White House sort of pre-caved.

OLBERMANN: Yeah.

FINEMAN: They signaled their willingness a while back to accept something short of a permanent extension of tax cuts on the wealthy. And once they did that, that empowered the Republicans to think they could roll through this thing without any compromise whatsoever. And the situation of this lame duck here is it’s becoming far more of a defining period of Congress for President Obama and for the Democrats than they ever figured it would be. And the Republicans are in no mood to compromise. The Republicans are willing to take the bet that Barack Obama and the Democrats aren't going to want to risk abolishing the tax cuts for everybody, at least even temporarily in some kind of crisis, than to take the Republicans on in this situation. So I don't know that that's how the unemployment benefits will be extended. I couldn't say for sure that that's a deal that will be made because I don't think the Republicans are going to be in any mood to do it.

OLBERMANN: They don't live in this world. They don't live in this country. And I think we'd be better off if they didn't live in this country. But that's my opinion, not Howard Fineman's. Senior-

FINEMAN: No.

OLBERMANN: -political editor of the Huffington Post, thank you, Howard.

FINEMAN: Thank you, Keith.

...

DURING "WORST PERSON" SEGMENT:

OLBERMANN: Thanks to Mr. Ailes for proving my point about false equivalence. And an aside to Mr. Stewart: Jon, I told you so. I mean, I might disagree with you, but I’d never think you were crazy or hateful. But Maher is right. One side sticks to the facts, and the other side is close to playing with its poop.

I hardly ever get into discussions involving "poop" since my kid is grown, but I was esp shocked to hear a US senator, a Rockefeller, no less, say certain TV stations should just...um...disappear. What the heck? And now--we'd be better off if all the Republicans left? Isn't this getting pretty dopey? I guess if your arguments aren't strong enough to prevail, you just remove the other side?

My sons know where to spread my ashes when I finally leave this place. But it's NOT an easy place to live in many other aspects, and - believe it or not - there ARE people who don't like it here!!!

As for the 'poop'...............obviously your kids are more mature that Keef!!!! That guy is one of the most uptight, angry, self-delusional, ego-centrical, and irritating people I've EVER seen or heard in my whole life.........he used to be a 'sports' guy, but he was just as bad then!!!!

Tax cuts for the rich

Submitted by Hippopaulimus on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 6:37am.

For 8 years all we heard was the Bush tax cuts were only for the rich. (which, of course, was a blatant lie)

Now this year we're hearing about ending the cuts for the rich, but keeping them for everyone else.

??? So, now the media and Dems are admitting the tax cuts were for everyone. But I have not seen anyone slam them for this. When the topic of extending the cuts (actually, keeping the current tax rates) first was being discussed, the Republicans should have been all over that point. But no, once again they use the excuse of taking the high ground to cover their lack of spine.

And why are the Republicans being dragged into the false argument that the tax cuts on the wealthy will cost us 700 Billion? .... What the hell? ....... Tax revenues are not money The Gov. is "entitled" to. If you are going to recieve 700 Billion less, the alter your BUDGET accordingly!

DO NOT SPEND MONEY YOU DON'T HAVE AND KNOW YOU'RE NOT GOING TO GET!

How much louder can we shout it at these elected mental midgets in Washington?

Submitted by Model850 on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 8:37am.

I too wonder why no one on the right -- including Fox program hosts and analysts seems to ever challenge the claim that extending the current tax rates will cost money. It's money the government isn't collecting now, so where is the supposed cost?

Oh, yeah. Right. It's going to cost because of spending.  Idiots. Just reduce spending! If a worker doesn't get a raise -- all too familiar a scenario these last few years -- their income remains the same (excepting for the effects of whatever inflation occurs). How do they handle the "cost" of their pay rate remaining at its current level? By cutting back on spending, that's how. The dems in Congress just can't seem to grasp that elementary priciple, and those on the right need to confront them with the facts when the subject of "cost" arises.

Well, you see, because it's money they're not going to get, it "costs" them.

Kind of like when you don't buy a new car, you "saved" $25,000 which you can now "spend" on something else!

The same kind of thinking that allows Fineman to say this woman is suffer[ing] in silence on national television.

It's called "wife logic."

Submitted by Newsbubba on Fri, 11/19/2010 - 12:07pm.

Ah, "saved money."  That's great stuff.  My wife used to come home from shopping and launch right into how much money she had saved me!  It was always, "I got this dress (which she will never wear) for ONLY $50, when it is regularly $475!!!"  Oh, and since it was sooooo cheap, she got THREE of them!  Wow, she had saved me $almost $1,300!  God, what a deal.  That was more than I made working all day.

I finally figured out how to make it pay.  I started writing down every cent she was "saving" and when the total was big enough (which didn't take long using "liberal math"), I bought a boat!  A big boat.  When she wanted to know how I could afford it, I told her it was "paid for" by all the money she had been saving shopping.

Kind of made it all worthwhile in the end.

At least I never had to listen to all the "savings" stories after that.

Extending benefits to the unemployed is not going to fix the problem -- you MORON. It is giving small business a leg up so they can start hiring unemployed people like Jeanne Reinman instead of her getting goverment handouts. You don't need a PhD in Economics to figure that one out.

This is the Hugo Chavez method of ensuring that his people are dependent on the government.

The advantage of non-neutrality

Lately, the topic of "objective" journalism has been called into question. Olbermann is an example of a journalist who makes little effort to hide his liberalism. Actually, I'm not so sure if Olbermann is a true liberal or just a conservative hater.

This open declaration of his bias has an advantage. We already know that he's a liberal, so we're in no hurry to debunk his distortions as if they were facts. Olbermann makes it easy to spot the idiot: we need only know his location.

Technically he's a commentator and not a journalist, but I'm no Olbermann expert so I don't entirely know how his services are used by NBC.  All commentators are supposed to do is express their opinions; it doesn't even need to be thoughtful or informed so it seems to me that Olbermann fits that description.

I'm just getting the impression that since George Soros and friends have been ineffective in silencing FOX News the new tactic (i.e. Jon Stewart, Ted Koppel, Sen. Jay Rockefeller  D-WV to name but a few lately) seem to be more than willing to jettison MSNBC (Schultz/Olbermann/Maddow) in order to then demand the collapse of FOX News. Interesting tactic but do any of you out there believe these liberals really expect Olbermann and Maddow not to show up again somewhere -- oh let's see maybe on CNN -- as soon FOX News is dead. This moral equivalency practiced by the left is getting old and quite apparent.

The left doesn't care about the collateral damage if it can silence any opposing viewpoints.

He thinks like all liberals that the Government is responsible for providing everything for people.  Lets be clear; The charity of taking care of the people who are in need is the responsibility of the local community and churches.  That is the way it was set up from the beginning.  The Government was to stay out of your life and not be a welfare organization.

When I was out of work I was out every day trying to find a job to sustain myself.  I had built up a savings and used it instead of the Government to get by until I was back to work.  Now people don’t do it anymore because they expect the Government to take care of them.

Keith, try to be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem!

Ive come to a conclusion after watching Olberman, somewhere back in the time of Vlad the Impaler a turk Olberman was running around.  Vlad heard enough of the turk and impaled him, liked it so much he impaled all of them..

is Olberman pushing us to impale him?

better watch it with the threats, jkw! next thing you know Dana Milbank will be writing an article about how newsbusters want Olbermann to be murdered.

remember, these Dems have no sense of humor, and also are apparently not able to recognize metaphor, irony, or any other sort of nuance.

"One side sticks to the facts, and the other side is close to playing with its own poop."   yup. and one side reports on the news while the other side reports on the first side.   try it sometime: flip back and forth between Fox and MessNBC. I did it the other nite.   in 10 minutes Fox covered the president's trip in Asia, late-breaking election recounts, and an update on the Afghan war. in that same amount of time, MSNBC talked (and talked, and talked) about what racists Rush Limbaugh, Beck, and Hannity were, for--well, I'm not sure what they were mad about, but it doesn't matter. Beck could donate a million dollars to blind nuns with cancer, and Olbermann would find something sinister about it.)   the Left sneers Oh, well Fox is not REALLY a news channel, is it...what a crock. anyone who thinks Keith Olbermann reports anything but his own hate-filled projection is delusional.

Maybe Keith O Should Take His Own Advice

Maybe being a shill for the minority party, he should REMEMBER that he is in the minority party (at least in terms of who actually holds office).

Yeah, except ...

We're at (or near) the majority.

The Germans could afford to scapegoat Jews because they were a minority. We're not a minority. We're actually the largest chunk of the viewing/listening/reading audience.

The media is in a death cycle. They demonize their own audience, inevitably shrinking it, in which case they demonize it even more to please the small niche audience they have left. Meanwhile, FoxNews has the run of the land all to itself.

I'll say again ... sooner or later, we're going to get a conservative competitor to FoxNews. It can't not happen. That's where the audience is, that's where the money is, and the liberal media is dying rapidly. The only question is: who's going to get into it first?

Only on MSNBC

Only Olberdork would sit in front of cameras on National TV and conjure up an image of someone playing with feces.

This is liberalism at it's best, folks.

One word to describe Olbermann:  nincompoop.
