NBC Notes Obama Made Dalai Lama Sneak Out of White House Past Trash Bags

Uniquely among Friday’s broadcast network evening newscasts, NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams gave his viewers a glimpse into the undignified exit from the White House endured by the Dalai Lama, who was made to walk past a number of trash bags as President Obama sought to keep the Chinese government from noticing the meeting. A photograph of Tibet's exiled Buddhist spiritual leader walking past the bags was shown as the NBC host read the piece.

Below is a transcript of the news item from the Friday, February 19, NBC Nightly News, as read by Brian Williams:

How do you ask the Dalai Lama to leave the White House if you’re trying to keep his visit from becoming too public? Well, judging from the trash bags that he had to walk around, the Obama White House had him exit through a door seldom used by anybody but household staff. It’s where the West Wing meets the main residence. China, however, did notice the visit and called in the U.S. ambassador to China today to protest.

Diplomacy has become the art of turning the smallest of symbolic gestures into the equivalent of the Normandy invasion. It's etiquette turned into foreign policy.

In other words, it's silly. It substitutes for fighting, they argue; but then again, this is true only for people who would have fought over such small slights in the first place.

We should have no trouble talking to the Dalai Lama in the whatever room they officially use for reception, and giving him a limousine ride from the front door. The Chinese aren't going to go to war, so let's show respect for a man who deserves it. They were going to call in the ambassador to complain anyway, so why waste the event? Give the Dalai Lama his full respect.

1) If he thought no one would 'notice' the Dali entering/leaving, he was wrong.

2) If he thought staging photos of the Dali having to leave from the servant's exit and climb over trash bags would pacify the Chinese, he was wrong.

3) If he thought other people/nations would think he dealt wisely with the Dali OR the Chinese, he was wrong.

The Dalai Lama, a lifelong champion of non-violence on
Saturday candidly stated that terrorism cannot be tackled by applying
the principle of ahimsa because the minds of terrorists are closed.

“It is difficult to deal with terrorism through non-violence,” the
Tibetan spiritual leader said delivering the Madhavrao Scindia Memorial
Lecture here.

He also termed terrorism as the worst kind of violence which is not
carried by a few mad people but by those who are very brilliant and
educated.

“They (terrorists) are very brilliant and educated…but a strong ill
feeling is bred in them. Their minds are closed,” the Dalai Lama said.

He said that the only way to tackle terrorism is through prevention. The
head of the Tibetan government-in-exile left the audience stunned when
he said “I love President George W Bush.” He went on to add how
he and the US President instantly struck a chord in their first meeting
unlike politicians who take a while to develop close ties.

The loopy peaceniks in the audience must have loved that.

As a parting gift after their meeting, [Alleged] President Obama gave
the Dalai Lama a set of presidential cufflinks. Cufflinks.... and the

Numerous mainstream media outlets have tried in recent days, as well as last year when Obama cancelled his planned meeting, to downplay the game plan this administration is playing in carefully orchestrating this meeting with the Dalai Lama.

The generic effort was like this one from the Los Angeles Times' Christi Parsons:

In keeping with the three presidents who preceded him, Obama didn't meet with the Dalai Lama in the Oval Office...

or, like this; by quoting a Obama spokesperson, and not challenging it:

"He's going to receive the Dalai Lama in much the same way that previous presidents have received him in recent years," a senior administration official said of the president.

Let's set the record straight; it's not that they don't know better. The LA Times columnist, a very good satirical writer, Andrew Malcolm noted this week (but not in the print edition):

A U.S. presidential visit with Tibet's exiled spiritual leader has become commonplace -- if still sensitive. But George W. Bush felt so strongly about a public meeting to show support for democracy that he once went to the Capitol for a medal presentation to the Dalai Lama.

A few notes:

The elder Bush became the first sitting US President to meet officially with the Dalai Lama, on the 50th anniversary of his exile.

Bill Clinton refused to meet officially with the Dalai Lama; instead in a carefully staged event, he dropped by to a meeting that Gore and aids were in.

President Bush met at least 4 times with the Dalai Lama, at least one of them very publically and officially.

President Obama is the first U.S. President to cancel a meeting with the Dalai Lama, and then in an effort to appease the left, reschedules it, bans the press, and only allows one official picture to be taken; then, sends the Dalai Lama scooting out the back door by the trash bags.

A real class act we have here, folks.

All this in a ludicrous attempt to hide the Dalai Lama's visit from the Chinese...I don't think even Clinton would have done this. Even the looney libnuts at NBC seem to have grasped how inappropriate this was.

yeah, I've seen all those, and that last one has a particularly nasty looking face on the Chairman that seems like his real self. Not the grin, but the eyes, you can see the evil that's in them.

But the part about the Chairman writing his own bill, if that's the case, what's the point of the 25th? They are going to do whatever the hell they want, regardless of the Republicans.
