On Wednesday's Hardball, MSNBC's Chris Matthews hosted a discussion with Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker and Salon's Joan Walsh as the trio discussed Parker's latest column, "A Tip for the GOP: Look Away," -- which Matthews built up by effusing, "I`ve never seen a stronger column in the newspapers" -- in which she argues that the Republican party is hurt by being centered in the South with its history of racial politics. Matthews, who would later theorize that Sarah Palin will exploit white racism by visiting "cul de sacs of whitedom," set up the segment by reading a line from Parker's column which compares Palin to a white character in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mocking Bird who falsely accuses a black man of raping her, leading to his conviction by a racist jury. Matthews:
Here`s a quote that really grabbed me: "That same rage was on display again in the fall of 2008, but this time the frenzy was stimulated by a pretty gal with a mocking little wink. Sarah Palin may not have realized what she was doing. But southerners, weaned on Harper Lee, heard the dog whistle." Kathleen, "heard the dog whistle." Is Sarah Palin a poster girl for racism? Yes or no?
Parker suggested that Palin is indeed a "poster girl for racism," though "not consciously," and alluded to white racism being incited by a white woman and black man being pitted against each other, as in Sarah Palin versus Barack Obama, or in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Parker:
Story Continues Below Ad ↓I certainly don`t think she, Sarah Palin, knows anything about Harper Lee or this deep history in the South, where you don`t position a white woman and a black male and pretend like there`s nothing happening there. There`s a deep, deep history. That`s why I mentioned, dropped the Harper Lee in there.
Parker soon bizarrely suggested that conservative positions on issues like states rights and even gay marriage are in reality veiled attempts at inciting white racism. Parker:
There`s this subliminal level of communication that goes on. The Southern Strategy has always been -- well, since they stopped using the N-word and being explicit about what they`re trying to do with race and, you know, creating this “us versus them” dynamic, it became increasingly vague through the years. You started talking about states rights at a certain point. Then you started talking about, you know, these wedge issues like gay marriage and on and on.
Matthews tied Henry Gates, the "birther" conspiracy theorists, Republican Senators' who questioned Judge Sonia Sotomayor, and Sarah Palin together as he suggested that all are linked to racial politics:
Is she connecting the dots, Joan, among Henry Louis Gates, the birther movement, the Sotomayor testimony and confirmation questioning, so tribalistic? There`s no doubt about it. All that stuff has become very tribalistic, something we thought we`d begun to crack in this country. Is Sarah the dog whistle that says, yeah, that`s what it`s about?
Finally, the Hardball host theorized that Palin would focus on visiting predominantly white rural areas, which he referred to as "cul de sacs of whitedom":
Palin has attacked New York, Washington and Los Angeles. She goes after the government, after the media, after Hollywood. Anything that`s on the coast is evil to her. She`s an Alaskan who, I bet you any money, is going to spend most of her time down in the middle parts of the country, the rural white parts. She`s going to find those cul de sacs of whitedom, and exploit the hell out of them, right?
Matthews has a history of finding racism in bizarre places, as evidenced by the March 11, 2008, edition of his Hardball show when he voiced agreement with New York Times columnist Orlando Patterson who declared that "I couldn't help but think of D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation, the racist movie epic that helped revive the Klu Klux Klan with its portrayal of black men lurking in the bushes around white society," when he saw one of Hillary Clinton's campaign ads that questioned whether Barack Obama could effectively protect American families while they sleep at night.
Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the segment from the Wednesday, August 5, Hardball on MSNBC:
CHRIS MATTHEWS: We`re back. Time for the politics fix with syndicated columnist Kathleen Parker and Salon.com`s editor-in-chief, Joan Walsh. I`m not sure you two are going to argue much, but let me tell you, I`ve never seen a stronger column in the newspapers than what I read this morning when I got up. And the reason I`m so glad Kathleen is joining us, Joan, is that she wrote this column basically backing up Senator George Voinovich of Ohio, saying the Republican party, which has done pretty well over the last half century, has been basically getting destroyed by the right wingers in the South.
And we`ve talked a lot about the obsession with this birth movement down in, birther thing down in the South and all the rest of the ethnic potential here. Here`s a quote that really grabbed me: "That same rage was on display again in the fall of 2008, but this time the frenzy was stimulated by a pretty gal with a mocking little wink. Sarah Palin may not have realized what she was doing. But southerners, weaned on Harper Lee, heard the dog whistle."
Kathleen, "heard the dog whistle." Is Sarah Palin a poster girl for racism? Yes or no?
KATHLEEN PARKER, SYNDICATED COLUMNIST: Not consciously.
MATTHEWS: Not consciously?
PARKER: Not consciously. I don`t think -- I certainly don`t think she, Sarah Palin, knows anything about Harper Lee or this deep history in the South, where you don`t position a white woman and a black male and pretend like there`s nothing happening there. There`s a deep, deep history. That`s why I mentioned, dropped the Harper Lee in there. You want to talk about the Southern Strategy?
MATTHEWS: Well, it’s like To Kill a Mockingbird. I just saw it again, one of the great movies ever, where the white woman claimed that she’d been, you know, molested by this totally innocent black guy.
PARKER: Right.
MATTHEWS: And she was believed for no reason, except she said so.
PARKER: Right. Look -- and please let me be really, really clear. I`m not saying Sarah Palin did that. I`m just saying that there`s this subliminal level, subliminal level of communication that goes on. But ultimately, it`s always about an "us and them" dynamic.
JOAN WALSH, SALON.COM: Right.
PARKER: And Sarah Palin`s really very good at that. And she is, you know, when she plays her populist role, there`s no one better at it.
MATTHEWS: Is she connecting the dots, Joan, among Henry Louis Gates, the birther movement, the Sotomayor testimony and confirmation questioning, so tribalistic? There`s no doubt about it. All that stuff has become very tribalistic, something we thought we`d begun to crack in this country. Is Sarah the dog whistle that says, yeah, that`s what it`s about?
WALSH: I think Sarah Palin`s overall message is one of “us versus them.” I think that she took the lead on the campaign trail -- and you and I talked about it back in September and October, Chris -- in really making Obama the other. She would literally say things like, you know, we don`t know enough about him. We`re not sure where he`s from. She would talk about the regular America, you know, and palling around with terrorists. We`ve taken that apart. So she was the person, not John McCain -- maybe behind the scenes the McCain people were encouraging her. But she had a real zest for it, you know. She did it with a real zing and panache.
She really, you know, she had that visceral appearance of enjoying it when she was really saying some pretty hateful and not-founded things. Barack Obama is one of us. He`s very much so. The only thing different about him is he`s black. He`s our first black President. And, you know, I think we`ve made enormous racial progress. I don`t want to, and I know Kathleen doesn`t want to overstate what`s going on right now.
But we`re in a moment right now with the birthers, with the reaction to the Gates` affair, with the trashing of Sonia Sotomayor, and, you know, even John McCain saying he`s not going to vote for her, where the Republican party seems, seems to believe that its best route is tribalism and scaring people. Whether they`re scaring people about Obama is going to take away your health care or they`re scaring you about we don`t know what he`s about; he`s a Muslim, he`s a socialist, it`s fear. The tactic is fear and fear alone. And I loved Kathleen`s column. It was awesome.
PARKER: Thank you.
MATTHEWS: I`m struck by the numbers. This new poll that came out and showed that the southerners, a majority of them are not willing to commit - - a majority of southerners, including blacks -- obviously the blacks aren`t part of this, I assume -- don`t have any reason to believe he`s an American. They either don`t believe it or they`re --
WALSH: It`s stunning. They`re not sure.
MATTHEWS: A majority of them are not willing to say, yeah, he`s one of us. And the rest of the country is overwhelming. Nine out of 10 say sure, he`s one of us. So why is the South alone in this regard? Not Northeast, not Midwest, not West. But the South stands out there uniquely and regionally and racially opposed to this guy.
PARKER: One word, Chris, one word: Confederacy. I mean, you know, the South is very, I live there, okay? I want to make that clear, too, because I`m not bashing southerners. I love the South and I am a southerner. But-
MATTHEWS: But 40 percent of those states like yours are black.
PARKER: It’s part of the history.
MATTHEWS: So it`s the 60 percent that are white.
PARKER: It`s part of the culture to be secessionist.
MATTHEWS: Like Rick Perry effectively is?
PARKER: To always view the federal government as the enemy. And it`s very, yeah, yes, I can`t, I can`t-
MATTHEWS: How about Palin? Let`s talk about Palin. Palin has attacked New York, Washington and Los Angeles. She goes after the government, after the media, after Hollywood.
PARKER: Yes.
MATTHEWS: Anything that`s on the coast is evil to her. She`s an Alaskan who, I bet you any money, is going to spend most of her time down in the middle parts of the country, the rural white parts. She`s going to find those cul de sacs of whitedom, and exploit the hell out of them, right?
WALSH: But wasn`t she in New York last night at Michael`s, the big media and celebrity-
MATTHEWS: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) because she`s got a lawyer who is smart enough, Robert Barnett, to take her to the one place she`s going to get a hell of a lot of publicity.

Yes, Chris Matthews is a liar. Is he a congenital liar, I don't know. But ever since MSNBC went into the tank for Obama, & this happened during the primary season, he has forsaken any thought of being objective. He has no core belief other then liberalism, many leftists find their "religion" in political cause. The green movement, the global warming nuts, or the the race industry, all are basically replacements for actual religion. Matthews sold his soul & cannot be trusted as an objective, & this goes for the rest of MSM, not just MSNBC & Chris Mathews.
Despite what you believe Chris, if there is an afterlife, I'll be where you are, & I'll be looking for you DOWN THERE. You chose the long (& wrong)way, but I'll be waiting.

No offense to my friends north of the Mason-Dixon line; but I've seen big city yankees come down here for years and they've absolutely infiltrated our way of life in the name of 'saving us from ourselves'. Some of them have led miserable lives and can't wait for the rest of us to join them in their misery. This old boy has about had enough.
BTW. My best friend lives across the street and he and his wife are from New Jersey. They retired here. Two of the best folks I've ever known. So don't get me wrong on the yankee thing.

Thu, 08/06/2009 - 22:26 ET by KellyRThere's a lot of transplants that came down from the North; some were wonderful people, and some not-so-nice, arrogant asses. I have a next-door neighbor from NJ who calls herself a Southern gal. The only thing I object to is anyone from anywhere coming here thinking their (everything) is better than what we have here. Well, if that was truly the case, why didn't you stay where you were? Doesn't make sense. Like I say, some Northerners are delightful, and some come off in a very repulsive, condescending manner. That doesn't work for me, and I've let them know that in no uncertain terms.

Thu, 08/06/2009 - 23:52 ET by BlondeIn many stores here in Florida, there's a sign...."there will be an additional charge of $10 if you tell us how it's done up North".
Since I've been a kid, it's been snowbird time of year and normal time....unfortunately, snowbird time has been extended to almost full time, with all of the transplants.
This is funny...one time I was taking the airport shuttle home...in a van surrounded by New Yorkers. They asked me (a native) what I'd call a New Yorker who'd been in Florida since the early 70's.....and I said "a damn Yankee". LOL...you could have heard a pin drop.
I hope he fails, too.
Hi, Blonde!
Fri, 08/07/2009 - 08:38 ET by KellyRSounds like the stores in Florida have the right idea. I love it! It is the height of hubris for these individuals to come here and proceed to lecture us on 'how we do it up North.' We don't really CARE how you do it up North. We like it fine as things are and didn't ask you for your opinion in the first place, so bugger off.
I love the flavor of the South. The weather, the laid-back atmosphere, and most of all the people, who are some of the friendliest you'll ever meet. I would never live anywhere else. It makes no sense to me that people moving here from other regions brag about how much better it is up North, out West, etc. If that was the case and things were better there, why didn't you STAY there?
Loved the last comment about "damn Yankee." I guess they thought we should be happy to be standing in the presence of the 'great white bwana come to help the downtrodden natives.' Get real and stop drinking the Kool-Aid.
So True, Kelly
Fri, 08/07/2009 - 09:10 ET by BlondeThe South is a horse of a different color.
The "worst" offenders, IMO, are the residents of the blue states of the north east (I won't even get into the rude french canadians). They are suspicious of smiling strangers who are friendly and say hello.
Midwesterners are unfailingly polite, but sometimes confused by the way we do things here (ever see one the first time a waitress asks them whether they want "sway-tay"?...and they always want a coke, lemon lime flavored). It's the only region of the country I'd consider...if I could handle anything below 50 degrees!
As this piece demonstrates, the liberal elites think all southerners (although SoFla is mostly southern Brooklyn, these days) are backward and stupid because we tend to speak more slowly and add extra syllables to words. They can stereotype us all they'd like, but they should always remember that slow speech does not mean slow minds....furthermore, that we consider running one's yap at a hundred miles an hour is an indication of arrogance and sneakiness.
I hope he fails, too.
Re French-Canadians
Fri, 08/07/2009 - 10:25 ET by slickwillie2001There's no group in the world more rude and obnoxious than French-Canadians imho. Though 99% of them know English, they generally pretend not to. They are also the most extreme far-left group in North America. Strangely, the rest of Canada is made up of mostly great folks.
Hmmmm . . .
Fri, 08/07/2009 - 13:05 ET by KellyRI really don't know much about the French Canadians. I've only travelled to Canada once (during a two-week Navy Reserve training exercise). My group made a half-day excursion there from Mt. Clemens, Michigan, and I only spoke to one or two. Didn't seem friendly, but in their defense, weren't mean either.
Is Ohio considered the Midwest? Everyone I've met from there so far has been very polite and respectful. Really nice people. Coke with lemon-lime -- hmmm. I'd like to try that.
Yeah, I agree -- the pace and cadence of one's speech has nothing to do with intelligence. It's a stereotype with no basis in fact perpetrated by those who wish to demonize a group they don't really know and choose to blindly hate. Very sad and disappointing, but with some bigots, very predictable.

Well to all of you libs, the rest of us are continuing forward, I hope you choose to stay in the mid-60's, the worst mid-decade years in the last 150.
You dems are going to have possibly the shortest period in power in recent memory, and you will be out a long time to come. We've had it, watch the hell out.
I despise this Kathleen Parker
Thu, 08/06/2009 - 12:30 ET by TexndocShe was nothing but an Obama cheerleader, and as a "conservative columnist" she is of course trotted out and paraded around by the likes of MSNBC. Since Obama got elected and is ramming through a socialist regime her modus is to write column after column Conservative bashing and not one word about her travel buddy on Air Force One (ooh, she wrote a column on that, it was "so cool")
Someone has a nice photoshop of Kathleen sitting in a concentration camp getting her head shaved after the Russians liberated the camp from the Nazis. Brilliant work.
Answer
Thu, 08/06/2009 - 12:43 ET by cvgbuckeyeLet me answer you this way Sissy, I mean Chrissy:
If I were a guest on your show, rather than those push-over, so-called Conservatives that you only put on your show so you can push them around, and you pushed me, called me a racist or you called Sarah Palin a racist, I would re-arrange that simple looking face of yours so that it would fit up Obama's backside a little easier than it does now. From that day forward, you would have to pull your pants down to blow that simple nose of yours.
Soon thereafter I would be happy to provide the same favor to that twin of yours, Olbermann.
I think I am a pretty good Christian but I have never been able to master that "turn the other cheek' thing.
If you happen to stick that fat face of yours onto this site for a moment and read this AND you consider it a threat, that will be the only thing that you have been right about in the last 10 years.

If being against Obama is racism, then I proudly embrace it! The fact that he's incompetent and lacking substance apparently carries no weight with these spoiled and ungrateful brats of whom Barack Obama is the poster boy [I suppose the word "boy" is racist as well!]. So call me a racist if you must but I'm not backing off! You've pushed me over the line and now I'm going to push you back!

2010: A GOP Hill
This is beginning to get interesting.
Thu, 08/06/2009 - 13:00 ET by needleScan through today’s articles, and see if you do not agree that there definitely seems to be an increasing daily percentage of articles posted here in NewsBusters concerning what I call “Neo-Racism” spewing from liberal elitists.
“Neo-Racism” is where race-obsessed blacks or race-guilt-ridden liberals project racism on whites who are not doing anything wrong or racist, except failing to share in the neo-racist obsession of elitists and some blacks.
It seems as if their shtick of yore of called people they do not like fascists and Nazis does not stick so well today. (I thank you Jonah Goldberg again and again.)
<sarc /on>
It is almost as if these elitists are becoming desperate.
<sarc /off>
It is beginning to looks as if – what with the tea parties and townhalls – the elitists may be losing their grip. Yep, Christian anti-elitist Sarah Palin may put the fear of God in them yet. I am ordering a truckload of popcorn just in case.

The Wasilla witch hunt---
Thu, 08/06/2009 - 13:10 ET by Roscoe MendagoThis is what you get, when the most ill-prepared man ever to be elected president just happens to be a black man. When this ill-prepared man is shown to be incompetent, the opposition are now flaming racists, adorned in Nazi regalia.
I'm puzzled, how does Sarah Palin get dragged into this? Everything that's attributed to her is made-up, where is the substance? Their Marxist obsession must be their own subliminal hoochie coo. It's like she's just standing there, minding her own business and someone says, "Oh, look over there, isn't she scary, tie her to a stake and incinerate her". Chris Matthews comes running down the hill yelling, "I've got the matches."

What's Kathleen Parker's real motive?
Thu, 08/06/2009 - 13:26 ET by zachlindRegarding Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird and Mayella Violet Ewell’s presence in the story. What Violet was certainly doing was attempting to touch the other side, the forbidden side, according to Democrat party beliefs of the day. She was extending an invitation to the black man to enter her “yard” under the pretense of performing a chore. She was chasing him, not the other way around. Kathleen Parker seems to be practicing a modern day version of Violet’s fantasy with her tracking of Barack Obama during and after the recent presidential campaign. Ms. Parker’s successful maneuvering for an invitation to ride on Air Force One from Chicago back to D.C. was a little much as is the ditzy columns she frequently writes about BHO. One would think she’s working up the courage to extend to Mr. Obama, her own version of an invitation to enter her “yard”.
Parker--
Thu, 08/06/2009 - 13:37 ET by misterbill-- at onetime was a conservative. You have struck a note when you cite TKAM and Violet. That is about the time she started penning liberal articles. Then, the advent of Sarah Palin drove her over the edge to complete liberalism. That was, I think, because she perceived Sarah to be the true threat to her love, Obama.
I remind you of Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times and her article wherein she fretted at her inability to follow Obama into the men's dressing room at the health club.

Thu, 08/06/2009 - 13:28 ET by celatorAlmost no one is watching Matthews' show, and MSNBC obviously doesn't care. So he continues to present his made-up, delusional view of the world, looking hungover, as usual, for all the world to laugh at. He's like the town drunk who's been sitting at his favorite bar stool for a week, explaining one more time how the world is filled with boogie men who are out to hurt him.

Kathleen who?????
Thu, 08/06/2009 - 15:27 ET by bpjamI had never heard of Kathleen Parker at the point that she came on the scene and attacked Sarah Palin as being some kind of hick, idiot, Vanna White/baby seal killer.
Kathleen Parker still claims to be a conservative. But yet she can only manage to find anybody to talk to who are far-left media whores.
Kathleen Parker is a whore. Ipso Facto. I don't mean a sexual whore who stands on a streetcorner and sells her body to strange, unethical men. I mean a person who sells their name, face and identity to stranger for money with no moral or ethical consideration at all beyond the money it pays. At least she doesn't have to visit the local AIDS clinic to get tested each month in this line of whoring. But it isn't much more attractive than the streetwalker.
Her only value is that she is willing to perform rhetorical acts of deviancy which normal pundits would not. Typically, those who are willing to demean and degrade themselves by participating in the most perverse and fetishistic acts are the ones who are the best paid. Kathleen Parker has done a 'specialty' in the market for pundit whores. Because there are so few women who are willing to perform the acts of intellectual, rhetorical and spiritual degradation that she will do with a smile, she is probably handsomely paid by her 'Johns' like Jeff Immelt.
While people like Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity has historically been accused of saying the things they say simply 'for the money' and being burdened by the accusation that they were performing some kind of shtick. Rush and Sean actually believe what they say. They didn't become famous or wealthy 'pretending' to be conservative commentators and predictably they don't get invited to places like Rachel Maddows den or a roundtable on This Week w/ George Stephanopolous. Why not? The producers of those shows know that Rush or Sean will actually argue and defend conservative principles. But those same producers don't have to worry about that with Kathleen Parker. They can just say 'Sarah Palin' and Ms. Parker knows exactly what the producers want to hear and she puts on a coy smile and goes out and validates every horrible accusation or derogatory claim made by liberal pundits around her.
It's one thing to be a whore. But it's another thing to be a whore and lie to your kids, your husband and the public about the fact that you have chosen whoring as a profession.

Ever visited Hawaii off the tour?
Thu, 08/06/2009 - 16:27 ET by Army BratTalk about racism. It's palpable.
I experienced it first hand. I'm a Heinz 57 for sure but appear Caucasian. I walked in to a sandwich shop. I was the only customer. I started to order when a native Hawaiian...a Samoan came in and I was immediately ignored. Before he was done an Asian couple came in. They also were served ahead of me. Before they were done, another Islander came in and I went to the back of the line again. When the shop was empty, I got served. I understand that it's even worse for Blacks from some of my Black friends that have visited there.
When it became known that I was from Alaska, attitudes changed immediately. I was suddenly no longer "a little pink Haole" that, "needed squishin". ( I heard this in a bar from a very large, very hostile Samoan in reference to my presence.)
I found out later that Alaska and Alaskans are well known for being far less racist than most. There was a time when couples of mixed race came here to escape racist views and attitudes. I believe that that attitude is still alive here.
To call Sarah a racist, not just because she's from Alaska, but because of the kind of person she is makes me sick to my stomach.
These scumbagas just make this crap up as they go along. Lies and more lies with the Prez setting the example.
It's too bad that some of Americas older traditions and values failed to make it past the "civilization" of same.

Thu, 08/06/2009 - 17:08 ET by Rush Fanlisten to black "spokespersons."
I watched a portion of a C-SPAN-televised panel that took place on July 30, that Soledad O’Brien moderated on "The State of Black America," discussing race relations in the U.S.
For Soledad O'Brien, and panelist such as Michael Eric Dyson, BET’s Jeff Johnson, MSNBC political correspondent Michelle Bernard and others, racism is alive and well in this country. For example, racism had to be involved for Sgt James Crowley to arrest Professor Louis Gates. Moreover, they seemed to be surprised that Sgt. Crowley was an instructor who trained other officers in racial profiling.
MSNBC's Michelle Bernard even criticized Bill Cosby for his simplistic encouragement to young blacks to work hard, get an education, don't take drugs, and stop making babies out of wedlock. Bernard indicated that Cosby just didn't understand the widespread racism in this country.
Isn't it interesting that Black leaders on the right, such as RNC Chairman Michael Steele, former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, Talk radio hosts Larry Elder and Herman Cain, and other Black Republicans, rarely, if ever, use the "racism card."
But I doubt if you could find any black leader or spokesperson on the left who doesn't blame racism for just about everything.

Matthews and the Rabid Left
Thu, 08/06/2009 - 22:56 ET by KellyRThe left-wingers, in my estimation, have a strategy here. They're trying to create friction in the Republican party, trying to manipulate non-Southerners into blaming Southerners for the loss of elections. Divide and conquer. Should the Republican party be unwise enough to be conned by the left into doing so and alienate a base that has supported them for 40 years, they may not be happy with the results, come the next election.
Just as Obama threw his grandmother under the bus to make political points, Ms. Parker threw the South under the bus to make points with the liberals. I think she behaved disgracefully. Racially prejudiced behavior exists in all areas. It's a sad part of life. However, to smear an entire region for the behavior of a few is beneath contempt. Shame on her.

Sarah Palin is a smart, strong, independent, take-no-BS kind of gal.
She's a tough, no-nonsense reformer as well as intelligent, articulate, and principled.
She's Middle America. That’s why the Democrats hate her.
She weathered the onslaught of rabid bloggers and main stream media leftwingnuts who flung some of the most obscene, slanderous, filthy tirades ever manufactured.
Not able to find any real dirt in her past or her character, they fabricated, instead. They resorted to targeting her daughter and her innocent infant son, because being the puerile simps they are, they lack the courage to fight with the adults.
Congratulations, Kathleen. You're officially an assclown.
