CBS Mocks Palin: ‘Resign from Office? You Betcha’

  • Bookmark and Share

On the Saturday Early Show on the morning of July 4, CBS anchor Priya David mocked Sarah Palin’s famous phrase, "You betcha," as she introduced a report by correspondent Nancy Cordes on the Alaska governor’s decision to resign from office. David: "Resign from office? You betcha. Alaska Governor Sarah Palin dropped a political bombshell Friday, announcing that she's leaving her post, but her future plans remain a mystery."

Unlike her report on the CBS Evening News from the previous night, this time Cordes refrained from referring to Palin’s speech as "rambling" and "confusing," but she did run a soundbite of the Politico’s Mike Allen calling Palin’s decision "odd." Allen: "If you’re trying to promote yourself as a steady leader, this is an odd way to run for President." On Friday night, Cordes had run a soundbite of Allen calling the announcement "bizarre." Allen: "This is very unusual, even bizarre. Governors just don't stop in the middle of their terms when there’s no clear reason."

Below is a complete transcript of the relevant report from the July 4 CBS Early Show:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

PRIYA DAVID: Resign from office? You betcha. Alaska Governor Sarah Palin dropped a political bombshell Friday, announcing that she’s leaving her post, but her future plans remain a mystery. CBS correspondent Nancy Cordes has the latest.

SARAH PALIN: I will not seek reelection as governor.

NANCY CORDES: In a surprise announcement from her home in Alaska, Governor Palin said she will resign from office in three weeks.

PALIN: I love my job, and I love Alaska, and it hurts to make this choice, but I’m doing what’s best for Alaska.

CORDES: The Governor said she decided not to run for reelection, and that being a lame duck wasn’t for her. Complained that the barrage of ethics complaints against her have been sapping the state’s attention and money.

PALIN: My staff and I spend most of our day, we’re dealing with this stuff instead of progressing our state now.

CORDES: Among supporters, the move has bolstered speculation that John McCain’s former running mate is planning her own run for the White House.

CHERYL JACOBUS, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: This is a good thing, it’s a responsible thing, it’s a smart thing, and so the only thing she’s really signaling to the country and to the GOP is, I want to see what’s out there, I want to see what else I can do.

CORDES: But she’ll have to answer questions about why she’s quitting the job she was elected to do.

MIKE ALLEN, POLITICO: If you’re trying to promote yourself as a steady leader, this is an odd way to run for President.

CORDES: The timing of all this is curious. Typically, when politicians make announcements on a Friday at the start of a holiday weekend with no notice, it means they’re trying to bury the news, not herald the onset of an exciting new chapter in their political lives. Nancy Cordes, CBS News, Washington.

Last laugh

CBS Evening News in last place? You betcha!

D

Write Congress and Senate and tell them what YOU think!

Keep the ILLEGALS out, join NumbersUSA to send free faxes to your reps.

Replace Couric with Palin

If CBS replaced Couric with Palin, the ratings of the CBS Evening News might double. The CBS Morning Show might go up ten fold.

You betcha.

So who should be laughing?

CBS Early Show.

We don't even get the weekend version on either of our CBS affiliates in WNY.  That should tell people how many people actually watch that garbage! Very few!

As much as I admired

As much as I admired Governor Palin, this is just stupid.  Her political career is over.  You don't retreat from a fight.  That's just . . . girly.

Regarding CBS' snarky remark - Kiss My Betcha' CBS

Head I Win Tails You Lose

Palin is in a no win situation with the media. If she spent a considerable time out of state,  she would be eviserated by the media. for  not fulfilling her duty to Alaska. So she chose to announce her departure on a day where it would get the least attention.

That alone tells us she has further ambitions.

It's too early to tell whether this hurts her.  The media will use any and all tools at its disposal to attack her.

allanf

I agree with your assessment. In addition, she has really gone against the Republican establishment class too.

She was supposed to stay in the back ground and be a good quiet little  Republican but she is taking a different path.

Palin is going to raise money for Conservative Candidates (many of whom the Establishment Repubs are NOT supporting) and we Constitutional Loving Conservatives will win in our primarys and defeat not only the LEFT but the RINOS as well!

Delsa, I'd be a bit more

Delsa,

I'd be a bit more careful about getting started on your GRAND Palin plans.

A politician at the top of her game resigning before the end of her term on a friday before a 3 day weekend is a portent for bad things to come.

Cacciato

No grand plan.

Just an observation!

Palin also said she would help anyone who wanted her help!

She did not leave Alaska in the learch, she has helped Alaskans  move forward.

I think you quote the pundits too easily?

Just another observation.

Delsa, I agree that you

Delsa,

I agree that you can't trust the blogosphere entirely, but her resignation really makes no sense.

Why would she not finish her term?

It Does Not Matter What Critics Say

If she is seeking another level in politics, the only concern is what she does with her new time. If the news media... writes her off, and she is prudent about investing her time, studying issues..., we could have another M Thatcher.

Agreed

Nothing will stop because she resigned.  That's apparent from everything that's been said about her decision since.

But the office and the business of acting as governor were obviously taking its toll because of the frivilous complaints and cost of defending them (no doubt including her family).  As she said, now the business of running the state can resume without the distractions.

Governors just don't stop

Governors just don't stop in the middle of their terms when there’s no clear reason."

You mean when there's no clear reason that you can see.

I think she has a clear reason, I doubt she would do this frivolously.

Whether it's a noble reason (political or personal), or something like buckling under threats of investigation or worse, I would think the reason is clear to her.  She's just not sharing it right now.

If Allen wants to complain that it's "uncool" or unfair to keep everyone wondering,
that's another thing.  I also wish she had not been mysterious.

"I think she has a clear reason, I doubt she would do this frivolously."

I agree, but really, I don't know what to make of this. The only option is to wait to see how it all shakes out. We have her explanation, but it goes against expectations so much. Does this reveal the weakness of our expectations or the weakness of her plan? Who knows? We just have to wait and see.

The msm's arrogance is

The msm's arrogance is appalling.  It can't be too much longer before their hubris does them in for good.

The LEFT did not run Palin

out of town.

They PISSED her off. From the Governor's seat she can't respond in the way she wants.

NOW the gloves can come off and the MSM will rue the day!

If she ever runs for President she will still have more experience than SOBama ever did. and

In addition, Republicans will have a Candidate who is an Honest Conservative, Constitution Loving, American in the race!

Amen

Honest Sarah

Agreed. Sarah is an honest conservative. That's exactly what the media hates and, unfortunately, what many Republicans don't like either. I see where Colin Powell is now complaining about Barry's policies. This where the battle begins. If the RINOS win again, so does Barry O. If "honest conservatives" can get their message out, we'll have a chance, especially among independents.

BTW -- thousands of Obama voters are scrambling for tickets to the Jackson memorial in L.A. today. The media has riled them up again. Sad.

At the risk of being redundant,

THE REASON SHE STEPPED DOWN, IS SO ALASKA COULD MOVE FORWARD!!!

Alaska needs a full time Governor. One who is not encumbered by extranous crap being thrown by the left 24/7.

In addition, it is my hope she campaigns and raises money for Conservative Candidates.

You are aware of a time difference between Alaska and the lower  48?

Palin was speaking to ALASKA!

My "claim" are her own words. I don't have to question the time and date!

Time difference? What

Palin was ahead of the political curve on at least 2 counts

She said global warming is not man-made

She said Obama is a socialist

CBS Mocks Palin

PLEASE!

I have become nauseated with the pro/anti Palin comments. The news media has created a firewall, seeking tunnel vision which focuses only on Palin. Open your minds and realize what occurred in N Korea today. Ask why. Ask which is more important. Ask what is being done to eliminate the growing problem America faces in the two remaining axises of evil. Why isn't the news media focused on the seven missiles rather than Palin? Why is Obama shorting military defense funds?

DAILY WAVE

Re Why

When the Bamster screws up, the job of the liberal old media is to distract. Right now nothing he has done in foreign policy has worked or can work. He has messed up anything he has touched; reverse Midas touch; Iran, Israel-'palestine', Korea, Russia, Honduras, foreign trade, etc, etc. Thank God he has not focused his tremendous intelligence yet on Iraq, otherwise he would have screwed that up as well.

This is one of the reasons they focus on meaningless domestic news.

Couldn't Agree More

I support Sarah Palin and still believe she has a future in this nations political arena.  Obama had less credentials than she does and everything he has done has turned to crap.  If you believe Obamas continued attacks on our freedoms and capitalism will eventually work and lead us to prosperity, then you must not really believe in the conservative principles of limited government and free markets!  We know Obama's ideas will not work because they are grown out of the failed socialist ideas that have never worked before, EVER!  Sarah Palin is a solid conservative whose ideas are born from the conservative principles we all know the framers intended and wrote about in our founding documents.  They warned us of the government Obamunism offers us.  She accomplished more in those 2 1/2 years for Alaska than Barry has in his life.  Winning elections is not an accomplishment when the media cleared the playing field for you.  I agree with Bill Crystal who stated, 'those who didn't like her, still won't.  Those who did, still do".  She scares the lefties because she has the ability to connect with people on a personal level.  The other thing on her side is she speaks in common sense terms that people can understand, not the typical smoke and mirrors B/S we know as liberalspeak.  It is way too early to rule out someone as gifted as Sarah Palin.  There are others that can also emerge like Tim Pawlenty or Bobby Jindal.  I will support the conservative who gives us the best shot at winning!  No more RINOS!  If the GOP gives us another RINO I will not hold my nose and vote for them again.  No more compromising conservative principles for me.

This is about as simple as

This is about as simple as it can be made:  Gov Palin is not a federal employee.  She was hired by the people of the State of Alaska.  She only owes an explanation for her actions to the people of the state of Alaska.

Once again, we have the media dictating what gets reported and how it gets reported.  The national media has hounded her just about enough.  The Alaskan state media has as well, but that is fair game in politics.  Maybe some of you are comfortable in having People Magazine pick your candidates, I am not.

How about we let her explain herself, if she wants to.  There are plenty of knuckleheads supposing what the hell is going on.  Only Gov Palin knows.  I am comfortable with that.  I'll back her in whatever she decides.  And frankly, unless you are an Alaskan, it none of our dadgummed business.

You Betcha = Yes, We Can!

Just sayin'.

I think this was a

I think this was a brilliant move by Palin! I think she was ambiguous on purpose. This is driving the Left NUTS! :-) So much so that we have trolls like cacciato infecting NB with his PDS. In at least two NB reports, he's stated with certainty that Palin has an embezzlement scandal just ready to be made known to the world (yawn).

If I want to know how successful a conservative is, I have to look NO further than how they're treated by the Democrats and Drive-Bys. Folks, is this really that hard to understand? If this resignation by Palin is soooo harmful to her, and her future political asperations, why are Left (and RINO's) still out to destroy her?

I'm sorry, but if the Lefts sworn enemy (Palin) is destroying herself, and her influence, why are Leftists still searching for scandals?? Why not just let her destroy herself? To put in bluntly, the Left and our own RINO's are scared to death of this lady! This tells me they see her as a potential threat. Their actions speak volumes.

As a visitor to sites like Fox Nation, American Thinker, and RedState.com, the majority of conservatives (posters) I've read think this was a brilliant move...so do I ;-) Whether she runs for Prez in 2012, I do not know, but she is going to be assuming some type of leadership role. Heaven knows we need it!

In my mind's eye, Sarah

In my mind's eye, Sarah Palin boards an airliner for a little visit to Kenya...

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

As a strong Palin supporter

As a strong Palin supporter I am mystified shocked and disappointed by her decision. In my view she has totally shot herself and seriously harmed any future Presidential run by her sudden resignation for which she has not given any valid or compelling reasons for. She continually stated that she wasn't a quitter throughout her resignation speech, which speech highlighted that she was in fact quitting as Governor, because of expenses and/or the politics of personal destruction and/or because she could be more effective out of office than as Governor of Alaska. None of the reasons make sense. Indeed, by leaving before her full term is up, she again highlights the inexperience argument that the GOP used against Obama during the last campaign. Now we have a Mark Sanford situation where in Sanford's case he bailed out and was incommunicado for five days, Gov Palin bailed out for two and a half years. If she's concerned about the costs of her defense, she should have proposed financial penalties against frivolous filers, or requiring such claims be made under penalty of perjury. If Gov Palin is concerned about having to defend against these claims and the time it may take against her governance, does she really believe that if she had been elected VP, or if she were to be elected President, that she would not now face a plethora of ethics and other charges, because she has shown that she will quit if the going gets rough? She thus reinforces the left's politics of personal destruction and loses crucial influence, because now instead of being a Governor pressing her case for the benefit of Alaskans and the US, she becomes a mere lobbyist pursuing whatever agenda she decides to take up. A lose lose situation.

Any comparisons with Reagan are without any basis. Reagan always finished the jobs he was given. He didn't give up and he didn't succumb to the leftwing democraps' villification and criminal and ethical complaints against him and his Administration. Would Palin resign the Presidency (or had she been elected the Vice Presidency) because of ongoing calculated personal attacks and/or ethical complaints that would surely have been launched against her by the PDS acolytes of the democrap party? That becomes highly possible now given her current unexplained conduct.  The most charitable explanation is that she is trying to shield her family, but now that the left has drawn blood, the attacks will ramp even higher in order to chasten her from ever seeking any future office. This is a dream come true for the democraps and a nightmare for the republicans as it sees a rising star self immolate.
