According to a posting at MediaBistro's TVNewser, FNC's Geraldo Rivera admitted to being so excited about Judge Sonia Sotomayor's selection for the Supreme Court that he got "goosebumps" when he heard the news and bumped his head on a light fixture when he sprang from his chair in excitement. TVNewser's Gail Shister writes: "The Fox News host was so excited about the high court's first Hispanic nominee that he leapt from his chair in his home office and bopped his head on a low-hanging light fixture."
She went on to quote Rivera: "This is as important to us as Obama was to the African-American community. I have goosebumps."
After noting that Rivera supports "Sotomayor's vote earlier this month to uphold New Haven, Conn.'s decision to eliminate a set of fire department promotion tests because no minority candidates finished at the top of the list," she went on to relay that the FNC host generally no longer supports affirmative action, having changed his mind on the issue several years ago. Rivera: "I don't think it's very useful anymore, like reparations for slavery. It's something that served its purpose in a moment in history. Like any invention, it can become obsolete."
Shister also recounted Rivera's belief that Sotomayor's ascension would undermine politicians who blame "the man" for problems in New York City's Puerto Rican population. Shister: "The nomination of Sotomayor will help dispel, in Rivera's view, 'the whole poverty-pimp mentality that afflicts the Puerto Rican community in New York. Elected officials go around blaming "the man."'"

May 27, 2009 - 16:40 ET by ThalpyCA, there was good reason to hope that when Geraldo opened the vault door during his 1986 special, The Mystery of Al Capone's Vault, he would find part of Lake Michigan. Had that happened, we wouldn't have to put up with his empty bs now.
When is America

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).
...
May 27, 2009 - 17:25 ET by EugeniaYou got that right, as the person formerly known as Jerry Rivers will testify to.
Someone said it below...
May 27, 2009 - 20:38 ET by m4ster chief...but it's worth repeating:
I don't believe Geraldo is an "us" as he self-described his adopted race, unless "Jerry Rivers" is a Hispanic name. I'm surprised he doesn't wear a sombrero and serape to go with his Pancho Villa mustache.
Reminds me of an incident I heard years ago in the Navy. A Navy Commander was passed over by the Captain selection board, which had been directed by the Pentagon to give affirmative action preference to Latinos. The commander legally changed his name to Martinez, or something, and next selection cycle he was promoted. Don't know if he grew a mustache.
We'll see if the bump on his head knocks any sense

Geraldo increasingly sees every issue...
May 27, 2009 - 21:34 ET by PrairieSkythrough a racial, specifically Hispanic, lens. This is how he views the illegal immigration issue, the issue concerning the Connecticut firefighter promotions, and now the Sotomayor issue. By seeing the whole world throught this racially tinted lens, his perception and his judgement are colored and skewed by it.

May 27, 2009 - 22:37 ET by nadadhimmiheraldo rivera was originally, legitimately , legally named Jerry Rivers. He change it to the hispanized version to give him "street cred" in the 60's. He is a racist as is Sotomayor, of the worst, most unreconstructed hate filled sort. Raw, blatant hate against white males is just fine and is in fact government sanctioned. You see, thay are all just a bunch of honkey, redneck crackers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Aren't they?
You give Geraldo way too much credit!
May 28, 2009 - 00:01 ET by IamTinmanHe is the sort of lightweight that networks like to send to disasters because they are no big loss if they suffer some collateral damage.
I think FOX needs to send him to report on the SWat Valley offensive in Pakistan. We need a man on the ground.
Identity politics....
May 28, 2009 - 07:49 ET by adamsmithThis whole administration is based on identity politics. The only identity that should matter is an American identity. This is so far off course from what MLK II was marching for, it's ridiculous...It won't be long until the American southwest will want to be an autonomous Hispanic country...I feel like I am living in the Twilight Zone.........
