Olbermann Mocks the Elderly as '65 to Dead' Demographic

On Friday's Countdown, during the show's "Worst Person in the World" segment, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann tried to characterize the ratings of his show as more admirable than than those of FNC's highly watched O'Reilly Factor by narrowly citing viewing figures among younger demographics. Olbermann, who has a history of quoting the viewing figures for those 25-54 years old -- citing their value to advertisers -- to make himself appear more competitive with O'Reilly, on this occasion dismissively referred to older viewers as "65 to dead." Olbermann: "But don't worry, Bill, you're still dominating that important demographic, 65 to dead." Notably, in June 2006, Olbermann gloated that O'Reilly's viewers are "dying off."

And, although Olbermann vaguely claimed that Bill O'Reilly "crows about the ratings and then gets them wrong again," the MSNBC host in no way contradicted O'Reilly's numbers as Olbermann merely cited the statistics for the specific younger demographics, which did not disprove anything the FNC host stated.

TVNewser reported on the July figures: ""The top rated program was again The O'Reilly Factor at 8pmET(2,252,000 viewer average). For MSNBC, the top program was Countdown with Keith Olbermann at 8pmET in 9th place (959,000) and for CNN it was Larry King Live tied for 10th (940,000)." The TVNewser report can be seen here. Even though his ratings are relatively lower than those of O'Reilly, Olbermann referred to O'Reilly's ratings being "down" as he plugged the segment: "And Bill-O, the Clown gets caught with his ratings down."

In another plug, Olbermann claimed O'Reilly got the ratings "wrong": "Bill-O crows about the ratings and then gets them wrong again in 'Worst Persons.'"

During the "Worst Person" segment, Olbermann quoted O'Reilly's words about the July ratings for CNN, MSNBC, and FNC, informing viewers of their performance in relation to all cable channels. Olbermann, quoting O'Reilly: "'The ratings for July are in. The TV ratings causing a true reality check for CNN and MSNBC. Fox News ranked number six in prime time. That's among all cable channels. CNN, 22, MSNBC 30, right behind the tomato channel. Since I was off for a few days in July, I want to thank Laura Ingraham, John Kasich and E.D. Hill for keeping the numbers up.'"

Although O'Reilly seemed to be talking generally about all primetime shows in citing the numbers, conveying the cable news rankings' place among total viewers of all cable channels, Olbermann switched to talking exclusively about his own show versus O'Reilly's, only citing numbers for younger viewers, and comparing cable news shows only instead of including all cable shows -- presumably to make the numbers sound as different as possible from those O'Reilly used without explicitly contradicting him.

Olbermann: "I've got your reality check right here, goober. In July, Countdown was the number three rated show in all of cable news, adults 25 to 54, behind Bill-O and Hannity. We were the number two rated show in all of cable news adults 18 to 49, and we were the number one rated show in all of cable news, adults 18 to 34. And Bill-O was third. Since I was off for two weeks in July, I want to thank Rachel Maddow for kicking the asses of Laura Ingram, John Kasich and E.D. Hill. But don't worry, Bill, you're still dominating that important demographic, 65 to dead."

Below is a transcript of relevant portions of the Friday, August 1, Countdown show on MSNBC:

OLBERMANN: But first, time for Countdown's number two story, tonight's "Worst Persons in the World." Number three, Bill-O the Clown ventured into the audience estimates again, and, in the process, caught stepping on his loofah. "Finally, finally the ratings for July are in. The TV ratings causing a true reality check for CNN and MSNBC. Fox News ranked number six in prime time. That's among all cable channels. CNN, 22, MSNBC 30, right behind the tomato channel. Since I was off for a few days in July, I want to thank Laura Ingram, John Kasich and E.D. Hill for keeping the numbers up."

Olbermann

I caught Olbermann last night as he was cited the Bush's and Rush Limbaugh as his worst persons.  He striked me as a disturbed man.

Anytime I happen to see the

Anytime I happen to see the Worst Persons list, it's nearly always a list made up of Republicans (conservative or not), conservative media figures, or perceived conservatives.....if not always.

Jerk.

The "65 to dead" control most of the money in this nation, jerk. Check your facts. They have buying power and are a hell of alot more influential than you seem to know. Olberman is ...oh, why bother.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Oh, why bother is right,

Oh, why bother is right, isia!

He's not worth the time or the trouble.

Why does he think advertisers are increasingly aiming their ads at that group? They know where the money is.

The operative words in his tirade are "behind O'Reilly and Hannity."

But he will never admit that.

Olberjerk will see the "65 to dead" community come back to life on election day, and I for one will remember his remarks.

Olbermann: "...and we were the number one rated show in all of cable news, adults 18 to 34."

Isn't this the same demographic that gets its hard news from The Daily Show?

I find O'Reilly a tedious

I find O'Reilly a tedious bore at times, and if he asks one more guest whether "Obama" will come of the Factor I swear I'll.... yes Bill if suck ups get Obama then he's coming.

(and he did use a letter of mine last month, and totally rewrote it to make Bill look good) however...

But compared to Odiousmann, Bill is a combination of Gandhi and Churchill rolled into one.

Jack, I gave up on BOR some

Jack, I gave up on BOR some time ago. I have no desire to see him tout "the spin stops here" and then suck up to Obama.

The name of the game is "ACCESS" and BOR will do whatever it takes to get that access, just like the rest of them.

So I guess Olbermann is

So I guess Olbermann is somewhere between 65 and dead, since it's obvious he's a big fan of the Factor and watches it obsessively. In fact, I think Olby's far more often interested in The Factor than he is Countdown.

Until Olbermann musters up the courage to invite guests on the show with  opposing points of view and engage in serious poltical debate rather than the  nightly  F-You-conservatives hate fest, he will  never be taken seriously and his ratings will forever lag behind O'Reilly's.  Let's see Keith finally grow a pair and ACUTALLY DEBATE some of his 'Worst Persons' rather than just take potshots from his comfy studio. Let's see how the liberal girly-man fares against Ann Coulter or Michele Malkin in an all-out political debate. I'm sure Ann would just relish the idea. I'm sure Keith would hide under his desk.

I've stated before I think

I've stated before I think Olbermann and Rachel Maddow are sisters.I think Olbermanns' feminine itch causes his bitchy attitude.

I don't like Olbermann.

I don't like Olbermann. That said, his numbers are way better than they used to be. He's been getting more viewers. As long as that's the case, his show will just continue to be a visual liberal blog. He gets the audience he's looking for, regardless of his 100% Left content, so no need to change it. I'm not saying he or his show is any good, just stating what it likely driving it.

His sarcasm and manner of mocking people who aren't Left is also appealing to a group of people (mostly younger) who are like that themselves. We've all talked to them. You know the type. You get into a discussion with them on ideas, and before you know it, they can't deal with it anymore at the civil level and begin to move away from ideas and begin to mock those they disagree with as you attempt to continue a civil discussion. Civil discourse is harder and harder to come by in modern times when dealing with the younger generation. They're raised differently, raised in a way that civil discussion over disagreements isn't in the cards and isn't understood. (Not all! I'm strictly generalizing.)

On the 18-34 Demographic

Never in the history of media buying has a news show (other than comedy central) been purchased on an adults 18-34 demographic.

I was thinking that...

I was thinking that... don't 18- at least late 20s spend most time NOT watching TV news shows.

That's almost like saying you're winning the 0-18 year old demographic. Like, wow, man.

This is like a marathon

This is like a marathon runner saying "Yeah, but I won the first ten miles", after losing the race. It doesn't matter Olbermann, you have to count the entire race, not just one section of it.

Keith relates well to the young'uns

If Olbermann pares down his "winning demographic" any lower, he'll be smack dab in the bracket of his dating age preference.

maddy-mad-mad

Are there any good, kind, decent kind of people that watch KeithO's show??
It's all so mean.

"everymorning and everyday, I bossa nova with you"

Wow Keith ! Way to to go,

Wow Keith ! Way to to go, keeping up with that great liberal tradition of claiming victory while losing and shedding the cumbersome "dead" weight of anyone "65-to dead" who may have been watching your show.

Olbermann and Age

I'm a 22-year-old Factor fan; I've been watching since about 15. And I've been listening to Rush since I was about 7. So yeah, Keith. Get over yourself already! And aren't you the one, Keith, who is dating a 20-something?

Miller Time

My favorite Factor segment is Dennis Miller in "Miller Time." He is always laugh out loud hilarious.

Given the comments by the

Given the comments by the women he has bedded down with, the "65 to dead" group are still better in the sack than this sackless clown.

Countdown To No Ratings....

  Who's Keith Olbermann?

>>>The top rated program

>>>The top rated program was again The O'Reilly Factor at 8pmET(2,252,000 viewer average). For MSNBC, the top program was Countdown with Keith Olbermann at 8pmET in 9th place (959,000)

Olbermeister must be doin' some o' that thar NEW math....

Last time I cyphered it, 2.2million was slightly higher than 959,000.

Must be that public screwel I went to.

Olberdork does'nt get it...

His demographic isn't dying off...it's growing up.  Quick as a body turns 55, they get smart enough to realize this twits fulla crap and start listenin' to a conservative.
