Tom Harkin: McCain's Military Upbringing 'Can Be Pretty Dangerous'

According to an article in the Des Moines Register, a link to which is posted on Mark Levin's Web site, Iowa Democratic Senator Tom Harkin recently argued that John McCain's upbringing by a military family, rather than being a plus, is actually a liability because McCain would have a "hard time thinking beyond" the "world view shaped by" his military family upbringing, and also said it "can be pretty dangerous." Harkin: "Everything is looked at from his life experiences, from always having been in the military, and I think that can be pretty dangerous." So far, the only mainstream media coverage of Harkin's comments seems to have come from FNC's Special Report with Brit Hume on Thursday. (Transcript follows)

Harkin, who himself served as a Navy pilot, tried to  express praise generally for those who join the military on the one hand, while also suggesting that too much of a history with the military should perhaps disqualify a veteran from being a civilian commander-in-chief later: "I just want to be very clear there's nothing wrong with a career in the military ... But now McCain is running for a higher office. He's running for commander in chief, and our Constitution says that should be a civilian ... And in some ways, I think it would be nice if that commander in chief had some military background, but I don't know if they need a whole lot." The complete text of the article from the Des Moines Register can be found here.

Below is a transcript of the story as reported on the Thursday, May 22 Special Report with Brit Hume on FNC:

Iowa Democratic Senator Tom Harkin is being criticized for saying that McCain's military background makes him dangerous. Harkin told reporters on a conference call Friday, quote, "He comes from a long line of just military people, so I think his whole worldview, his life view has been shaped from a military viewpoint, and he has a hard time thinking beyond that, and I think he's trapped in that. And I think that can be pretty dangerous." McCain's spokesman called Harkin's remarks "offensive" and said they showed that Democrats are out of touch with American values.

Harkin

Typical "liberal". They spit on our returning Vietnam veterans and now this fool wants to diminish McCain's service even more. I suppose this despicable human being thinks that great "service" to the country is working on committees in the Chicago ghetto. Sad.

P.S. It's Memorial Day weekend. Nice timing, Harkin. You damn fool!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

So why is Harkin in the Senate?

He is just another fake Vietnam War hero! He said he flew combat in Vietnam and he didn't! He was caught.

Historically Challenged

Harkin is historically challenged.  If he would look back over our history the presidents with good prior military experience are the great ones.  The rest are like, well Tom Harkin.

Carter was an officer in

Carter was an officer in the US Navy.  I can not call him a good President.

I don't count him either

The point I was trying to make was that Washington had a big military background as did Lincoln, Truman, Grant, Eisenhower etc.  All successful presidents.

Carter is not in this league.  He can much out the stables holding their horses and that is as close as he comes.

Harkin's hypocrisy is

Harkin's hypocrisy is astounding. In 2004 he could not stop lavishing praise about John " I got a splinter" Kerry's military service and how important it was and when faced with someone who was a POW with a family history of honarable military service it is a liability.

Harkin & Grassley

I'm still at a loss as to how my home state can send Harkin & Grassley to the US Senate...

Their good looks and charm?

Their good looks and charm?

IOWA

Well, as an Iowan once told me, IOWA is really an acronym.  :-)

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Tom Harkin

After listening to many "Hearings by Congress

and Senators, I wonder where these people

come from.   They are all so egotistical, hypocritic,

etc.etc., and most have no brains.

If a Republican has no

If a Republican has no military experience, he's a chickenhawk. If he served in the National Guard, like Bush, he used connections to get a cushy job out of combat and went AWOL, and he's thus also a chickenhawk. If he actually served and comes from a military family, why he's a dangerous militaristic jingoistic threat! This is a have-you-stopped-beating-your-wife line of inquiry. Phonies like Harkin are a disgrace.

So... who is Tom Harkin? Or

So... who is Tom Harkin? Or should that be Komrad Tom Walter Mitty Harkin?

As he has consistently LIED about his military service, so I suppose that qualifies him to lie about John McCain too. Here's a few selected highlights from a 2004 FrontPage expose of Harkin's greatest misses

RECENT HISTORY
During the 2004 presidential race, Harkin initially endorsed leftwing candidate and former Vermont Governor Howard Dean. Two months before the general election, Harkin became an attack dog for Democratic standard-bearer and old comrade John Kerry, who like Harkin voted to authorize war in Iraq but thereafter relentlessly criticized it.

President Bush has "Lied to the American People" about his National Guard service during the Vietnam War, snarled U.S. Senator Tom Harkin at a September 9, 2004 press conference. Swift Boat veterans critical of John Kerry were also liars, Harkin claimed. Vice President Dick Cheney, said Harkin, was “a coward, who would not serve during the Vietnam War.” And those who brought up Kerry’s anti-war activities in the United States that encouraged the North Vietnamese Communists to continue fighting instead of negotiating peace, said Harkin, represent the “right-wing kooky fringe.”

Yet if anyone is a liar it’s TOM HARKIN…

During his service in the Navy, Harkin told Washington Post reporter David Broder, “One year was in Vietnam. I was flying F-4s and F-8s on combat air patrols and photo-reconnaissance support missions. I did no bombing.”

But as the late Senator Barry Goldwater (R.-Arizona) was first to notice, nothing in Harkin’s military service file showed that he ever served in Vietnam. Challenged by Goldwater, an Air Force General, to explain why he was awarded neither the Vietnam Service Medal nor the Vietnam Campaign medal (decorations given to everyone who served in the Southeast Asian theater), Harkin changed his story. Harkin claimed that he instead had flown combat sorties over Cuba during the 1960s.

This was another Harkin lie. Harkin actually served as a ferry pilot who flew aircraft in need of repair between the Philippines and his base in Atsugi, Japan. Harkin at last acknowledged that he never flew air patrols in Vietnam. He began describing himself in speeches as “a Vietnam era veteran.”

JUST A 1960’S QUASI-MARXIST LEFTIST
In 1969 Harkin began work in the office of longtime Iowa Democratic Congressman Neal Smith, and to supplement his income was given a patronage job at the U.S. Post Office Department. In 1970 Harkin as a staff aide to the House Select Committee on United States Involvement in Southeast Asia accompanied a fact-finding mission to South Vietnam. As part of this mission, during a 30-minute visit to Con Son Prison he snapped photographs of Communist prisoners in “tiger cages.”

When the mission returned, Harkin declared that these photographs were “too important” to be turned over to Congress and to the committee that employed him, paid for his travel and provided him official U.S. Government access to the prison. Harkin instead sold these photos, some to anti-American foreign outlets, and others to Life Magazine for $10,000. (Harkin used this money from selling what ethically was taxpayer-funded government property to pay off his own debts for his 1972 law degree from Catholic University.)

The “tiger cages” story in Life and throughout the anti-war press turned Harkin into an instant star of the left, including the establishment U.S. media. Harkin gave an interview to the Daily World, official newspaper of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), in which he made sweeping attacks on the treatment of prisoners throughout South Vietnam. His statements, based on being an underling who spent 30 minutes walking through one prison, were used in communist propaganda worldwide against the South Vietnamese government and the United States.

During Harkin’s 1982 re-election campaign, his opponent documented that this Democratic congressman had always voted against foreign aid for countries friendly to the U.S., but that Harkin had voted to give taxpayer money to Communist Vietnam, Communist Cuba, Communist Pol Pot’s Cambodia, Marxist Sandinista Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua and other Communist nations. When this came up in a broadcast debate, Harkin replied: “From now on, I am going to vote against all foreign aid.”

As a newly-elected Senator, in April 1985 Harkin and fellow neophyte leftwing Senator John F. Kerry (D.-Massachusetts) flew to Nicaragua (on a trip arranged by IPS staff member Peter Kornbluh) to give propaganda support to the Sandinistas only days before a scheduled congressional vote on President Ronald Reagan’s requested aid for Nicaragua’s anti-Communist freedom fighters. After embracing Daniel Ortega in front of news cameras, Harkin and Kerry flew back to Washington with a piece of paper signed by Ortega in which he claimed to be “non-aligned” between the U.S. and Soviet Union.

Harkin, noted reporter Gerard Jackson, during his 1985 mission with John Kerry to rescue the Marxist Sandinistas, urged the editor of Nicaragua’s independent newspaper La Prensa, Violetta Chamorro, “to accept Sandinista censorship.” She bravely refused.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

Excellent.

Hey Jack....I just posted

Hey Jack....I just posted below with just brief word or two about Komrade Harkin as you put it so well...I have known about his history too so I thank you for this great fact filled information you put out here for others in case they may not know.

Excellent, excellent job!

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

So, Obama Hussein's Upbringing in Islamic land is what ?

BHO would correspondingly have the same "hard tme thinking beyond" ...following this Idiots Dim thinking. BHO's background in Islam, is from a group of people that ATTACKed the USA...at least the US Military has not attacked the USA.

When the MSM and fellow Dim Congress people..you know, the guys and Gals who can't figure out why Oil is going sky high....when these Idiots start pushing down McCain's "Experience" you know they are pushing an "AGENDA".
I don't think any of these Dufus's would have survived what McCain went thru as POW, and they have NO BUSINESS critiquing him because of his UpBringing....
WHO THE HELL RAISED HARKIN as a child ? They need to "RECALL" him.

Grant's presidency was

Grant's presidency was marred with corruption and scandal. I'm surprised the Republican Party actually survived after him. However, since corruption was commonplace and quite open in the late 1800's, the "everyone is doing it" defense probably helped the party to stay afloat. Grant may well indeed be a worse president than Carter was.

Hmm

bws53,

I am going to have to look deeper into his presidency.  Not sure anyone could be worse than Jimmah.

As I understand it Grant

As I understand it Grant was not himself corrupt, but nearly everyone working for him was.

Interesting that we have to go back roughly 100 years to find the guy who was worse than Carter.

Maybe not

Free,

You just reminded me that at that time in history the corruption was rampant.  It flowed out of the civil war where the pols were profiting from contracts with the military and the execution of the war.  Once the war ended they expanded into the south and continued their corrupt ways.  I still say that Jimmah as a president was much worse than Grant.  We can argue about the cabinets and other straphangers and probably make a case.  With Lincoln gone the country still stayed together and continues to expand.  No embassy problems, economy did not go south etc.

I wasn't really interested

I wasn't really interested in hashing out which of the two was worse.

One thing is for sure though, Grant did not give us a radicalized Persia.

Spot on, Brad

There has been absolutely no mention of this in the mainstream media.

In fact, I posted a link here to Blackfive last weekend where I first read about this idiotic Harkin quote.  So it's been around quite a bit longer than May 22nd.  Mum's the word, though....disgusting.

lessons of Vietnam

Harkin's rewriting of history is far more dangerous. Here is a video of him getting smacked down by McCain.

Interesting post Jack

Interesting post Jack Bauer. I like it when VIP's like Kerry and Harkin, with their padded resumes, exposing them for what they really are. Like many other conservatives, John McCain is not my ideal choice either, for the next POTUS. That said, I would rather see McCain, with his military/senatorial experiences, than the alternatives. Obama and Clinton have very little experience in/on anything.

Military experience can work both ways, whether limited/much/none: (No particular order)

JFK- almost started WWIII.

LBJ- Vietnam, disastrous.

Nixon- My opinion only, I think he was a good president. Almost brought Vietnam to her knees. Got caught with his hand in the cookie jar/and with all those tape recordings.

Carter- Navy nuclear physics smart, this guy couldn't negotiate his way out a paper bag, no common sense at all.

Regan- Brought mother Russia/USSR to her knees.

Clinton- Couldn't find his own butt with both hands.

Bush- Might be a C student, whether you agree/disagree with him, we in the US, haven't been attacked again.

Eisenhower- Before my time, seemed like a good president from everything I've read. Brilliant strategist, reason for jumping from Lt Col. to Gen. practically overnight.

FDR- Have to give him credit, good all around, knew how to run a country, and sure could pick the Generals.

Hitler-Main instigator in starting WWII, sorry tactician, refused to listen to his Generals, killed them off instead.

Churchill- British Bull Dog, never, never surrender, enough said.

"Clinton- Couldn't find his

"Clinton- Couldn't find his own butt with both hands."

Ironically, he had no trouble finding the butts of others though.

Sure, 'cause that's where he

Sure, 'cause that's where he was keeping his cigars!

Tom Harkin states, "McCain's

Tom Harkin states, "McCain's Military Upbringing Can Be Pretty Dangerous"

Yeah, dufus, to our enemies!

Dangerous

Dangerous for President but okay for a Senator?

This from Harkin who has

This from Harkin who has been trying for years to cut Rush Limbaugh completely off the air to our military, the same guy who meets with dictators in South America with Kerry, the same guy who stood behind Howard Dean as Dean was kissing his arse good-bye with his Dean Scream in Iowa and Harkin didn't know whether to applaud or cry....yeah Harkin a real rocket scientist at work...a real patriot indeed.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

And Harkin says: "He's

And Harkin says: "He's [McCain is] running for commander in chief, and our Constitution says that should be a civilian".

Is Harkin saying that McCain isn't a civilian? Or is it just that Harkin doesn't know anything about our form of Government?

By this logic, Washington

By this logic, Washington should not have been our first president, as he was General of the Revolutionary Army before he returned to Philadelphia.

Let Sen . Harkin explain Obama's worldview

Perhaps the Senator can explain Obama's worldview, perhaps from the perch of his 57 states.  These must include the state of delusion and the state of confusion, among others associated with Senator Obama.

So just what does 2 years in the Senate do to give Senator Obama all  the experience necessary to be president?  For those people that thought they wanted Hillary and not Obama, Obama's starting to look better and better each day.  He's making mistakes even the fawning MSM can't cover up.  You have the love the Democrats, for putting themselves in this position.  Can anyone imagine the tap dancing they're going to be doing, trying to convince people this guy is our savior?

Harkin...

Stolen Valor.Clown.

American public need to be reminded of these POS and how they work their way up through stolen valor.

"You're either part of the solution or part of the problem"

Military personel a poor choice for CIC?

This man has an ass-backward argument as to what are good and bad qualities in an election for President. Being from a patriotic and Ameriacn loving up-bringing is now to be considered as detrimental? This is absurd with a capital "A"!! Let me add my two cents; I firmly believe that if you are not a Veteran, than you should not be allowed to vote-for anything. If you are a Purple Heart recipient, then you vote is counted twice(if alive). My views are drastic, but Sen. Harkins view is idiotic.
