Kudos to Gregory, Sees Hamas 'Wants Israel Destroyed in No Uncertain Terms'

By Brad Wilmouth | April 14, 2008 - 07:26 ET

Kudos to NBC's David Gregory for making a relatively rare declaration of just how fanatically anti-Israel the terrorist group Hamas actually is. On Friday's Race for the White House on MSNBC, Gregory hosted a panel discussion of whether Jimmy Carter's plans to meet with a Hamas leader are a danger to Barack Obama's presidential campaign, during which Gregory described Hamas as "the terrorist organization bent on destroying Israel." After liberal talk radio host Ed Schultz suggested that negotiation with Hamas may some day be necessary, Gregory further clarified his description of Hamas's nature: "But, well, but this is a different matter. I mean, Hamas has made it very clear, Tony Blankley, that it wants Israel destroyed in no uncertain terms." (Transcript follows)

On the Thursday April 10 The Situation Room, CNN's Brian Todd similarly noted that Hamas has "called for Israel's destruction." Todd: "Hamas is designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. government. It's called for Israel's destruction."

Notably, on Independence Day last July, CNN correspondent Cal Perry used a softer description of Hamas, calling it a "military organization who are fighting for independence against Israel," ignoring Hamas's stated long-term goal of taking over Israel as part of a Palestinian state.

Over on ABC, the network which historically has often qualified labels of Hamas and Hezbollah as terrorist groups by attaching such phrasing as "which Israel considers to be a terrorist group," anchor Dan Harris on World News Sunday merely reported that Carter plans to "meet with Palestinians the U.S. considers terrorists." Referring to the ABCNews.com Web site, Harris relayed: "Among our most read stories today, former former President Carter defending plans to meet with Palestinians the U.S. considers terrorists."

Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Friday April 11 Race for the White House on MSNBC:

DAVID GREGORY: First in the "War Room" tonight, former President Jimmy Carter has all but said he's backing Barack Obama. But now Carter is planning to meet with a leader of Hamas, the terrorist organization bent on destroying Israel. Obama said this about Carter's trip today:

BARACK OBAMA: I'm not going to comment on former President Carter. He is a private citizen, and, you know, it's not my place to discuss who or who he shouldn't meet with. I know that I've said consistently that I would not meet with Hamas.

GREGORY: Is that good enough, Ed Schultz, or does Obama
need to go farther? I mean, this is could be, it's a former President, would be a superdelegate, would he have to take a stronger stand politically, particularly given some of the problems he's got in the Jewish community?

ED SCHULTZ, LIBERAL TALK RADIO HOST: Well, it depends on how close Jimmy Carter gets to Barack Obama. Barack Obama said at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee earlier this week that he believes that a solution in Iraq is to involve Iran. Now many people take that as a sign that he would meet with [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, with the Iranians. So you could parallel the meeting with Hamas and the meeting that Obama might have with the Iranians. This could be a touchy area for Barack Obama, but I really think that he's not going to be able to reel in Jimmy Carter. And who knows, if you're going to have peace, you're going to have to eventually talk to both sides.

GREGORY: But, well, but this is a different matter. I mean, Hamas has made it very clear, Tony Blankley, that it wants Israel destroyed in no uncertain terms. And this is also an opportunity for Barack Obama to take a stand here, maybe solve, at least go down the road of solving a problem.

From the Reuters story

From the Reuters story regarding Mr. Carter's visit:

"I think there's no doubt in anyone's mind that, if Israel is ever going to find peace with justice concerning the relationship with their next-door neighbors, the Palestinians, that Hamas will have to be included in the process," said Carter, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

"I think someone should be meeting with Hamas to see what we can do to encourage them to be cooperative," he added.

Mr. Carter, we already know what they want; what has to happen for them to be "cooperative." It is the height of hubris for you to think that you can convince them otherwise.

Now, excuse me a moment while I wrap my head with duct tape:

OK I'm ready:

BARACK OBAMA: I'm not going to comment on former President Carter. He
is a private citizen, and, you know, it's not my place to discuss who
or who he shouldn't meet with.
I know that I've said consistently that
I would not meet with Hamas.

Well, that's OK for him, but I wouldn't do it??????

I am so sick of this non-judgmental, I won't take a stand garbage. How the heck can someone be President if he's afraid to disagree with what someone else does?

Obama

As each long day of this campaign wears on, it becomes more apparent that this man is all rhetoric and an empty Brooks Brothers 40 long.  An Ivy League educated, very polished, nicely appearing empty %&$*%# suit!  I would like to believe that the vast majority of voters in this country, those that are not included in the daily ad nauseum "polls", will vote for someone with substance.  I'm not a McCain fan, but let's be realistic......do we really want someone like Obama running this country?

Carter to Hamas

The MSM tries to convince us that Carter is meeting with Hamas as an "American citizen." If that's the case, then there should be NO need for Secret Service protection!

Carter should be denied re-entry to the US or arrested

If he meets with the terrorist organization as he states he will. Any other US citizen going abroad and meeting with Hamas, or Hezbollah, or Al Qeada, etc. would be arrested upon return and interrogated. Mr. Carte does NOT have the sanction and the authority of the State Department therefor the 14th amendment demands that he be treated like any other citizen in the same situation.

Too Late

Could have pulled his passport, but the administration probably are amused at what a fool he will make of himself. I'm befuddled that Clark Clifford isn't accompanying Jimmy on this fiasco.

Jane Fonda got a free pass to commit treason and so will Carter. There is a long line of liberals that should be stood blindfolded against the wall and the list will keep growing til we have a real leader that has a backbone and will enforce the laws.

He'd need to do it in a casket.

Clark's been dead
for a decade or so.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Dead, huh?...Well, bygod,

Dead, huh?...Well, bygod, let's dig him up, prop him against the wall, and shoot him anyway...plus we wouldn't have to bother with a danged blindfold.

Impeachment

I know it is too late to impeach Carter as President.

Can we impeach him as former president? That way people will say, "hey, didn't you have a president named Carter?"

Then we can say "no, no sorry, don't know who you are referring to."

And they would respond, "whom. whom."

Journalists and Academics Repeatedly Obscure Hamas' Real Nature

It is refreshing that some journalists, like Gregory and Todd, can recognize the plain fact that Hamas is essentially a terrorist organization. But there is still a long way to go before the majority of journalists and academics come to the same conclusion. In a flier of Columbia University Press' recent publications in 'Security Studies' I found this disturbing description of Shaul Mishal's and Avraham Sela's The Palestinian Hamas: "[they] show that, contrary to its violent image, Hamas (the Islamic Resistance Movement) is essentially a social and political organization, providing extensive community services and responding to political realities through bargaining and power brokering." And this is not just some random book on the subject. David Remnick, editor-in-chief of The New Yorker, has labeled it "clearly, the best book on the subject." But here is the problem with the description of Hamas as "essentially a social and political organization." North Korea is "essentially a social and political organization." So was China under Chairman Mao. The same goes for Saddam Hussein's Iraq. To try to, as Columbia Press says, "lift the veil" on Hamas by rebranding it as essentially a "social and political organization" is to obscure the fact that it is essentially an undemocratic organization that is a frequent human rights offender, and which only "bargains" with Israel because that nation brings to bear a preponderance of threat in many circumstances and contexts. No, just because Hamas is, like many Islamic organizations, concerned with helping take care of their own communities, does not make them an equal to law abiding parties and organizations in other countries that do not rely on terror and intimidation to accomplish their political goals.

This is indicative of modern

This is indicative of modern journalism that a reporter would receive congratulations/kudos for reporting the facts accurately. The bar keeps getting lower and lower.

I suppose his

I suppose his characterization of Hamas is an indication of just how radical and blood thirsty they are, considering even he couldn't spin them to sound any better. If he could, he probably would've tried.

I'm Impatient

So I have this empty post.

Sad State of Affairs

Shocking when they get it right, huh?

Two points to make here...

#1-I am stunned at the momentary lucidity on David Gregory's part on this subject! 50 brownie points for David!!!

#2-This whole subject concerning former President Peanut Farmer going to talk to Hamas? Carter is an embarrassment to this country, and someone at the state department should take the old fart's passport away from him. I saw a report from FoxNews about some muslim cleric and Hamas member of the Palestinian parliament, saying last Friday that Islam will soon conquer Rome, which he called the "...capital of the Catholics, or the Crusader capital". These are the murdering idiots he wants to "talk" to?? Jimmy Carter was a useless president, and barring a few positive things he has managed since leaving office, such as Habitat for Humanity, he has been equally useless and embarrassing as an ex-president. Go back to Georgia, Jimmy.

Can you imagine

What the MSM's reaction would have been if say George Bush Sr, Ronald Reagan or Gerald Ford had met with a sworn enemy of one of our allies during the Clinton years? They would have had an absolute cow! This is just plain ridiculous and should not even be covered by the media, unless, of course, Carter gets himself killed in the process.

President Peanut Farmer...

I can't imagine, barring something unforeseen happening, that Hamas would do anything intentional or allow anything to happen to Pres. Peanut Farmer while he is on his mission of stupidity...Carter is too good a propaganda tool for them. What a fool he is...
