I had every intention of letting "Cheney Flag-gate" go uncommented upon as a non-story. Vice President Cheney went pheasant hunting at an exclusive preserve in Dutchess County, New York yesterday, and the hunt itself left only pheasants hitting the ground. It was a local interest story for the most part, until a sharp-eyed photographer and a self-promoting blowhard turned this local interest story into a national non-story when it was discovered that the inside of the back door of a garage at the hunt club was draped in a Confederate battle flag.
There is precisely no evidence that Cheney or anyone on his staff saw the flag, but that didn't keep the Daily News from running straight to Al Sharpton. The story ended in lots of hot air being spit by a man in love with the sound of his own voice, and many people fruitlessly wishing they had a way to somehow blame the Vice President.
I only mention this story at all because of the eye for detail it reveals in our media. Consider this a "teachable moment" for media fact-checkers.
Below is the flag photo, as captured by a Daily News photographer.
Note the detail the Daily News posted about the flag itself:
A Daily News photographer captured the 3-by-5 foot Dixie flag affixed to a door in the garage of the Clove Valley Gun and Rod Club in upstate Union Vale, N.Y.
Not to be outdone, Austin Fenner of the Post claimed:
But the veep only shot him self in the foot - by visiting the exclusive Clove Valley Rod & Gun Club in Union Vale, a sprawling preserve nestled along the western side of Clove Mountain, where a 5-foot-by-5-foot Confederate flag hung in a garage attached to the club headquarters.
Led by the tabloids, the Times "Cityroom" blog blindly follows, and ups the ante with a rather blatant embellishment:
Reporters who covered Mr. Cheney’s visit on Monday — including Fernanda Santos of The Times — were not permitted to enter the grounds of the hunting estate. But at least one eagle-eyed photographer captured images of a Confederate battle flag — about 3 feet by 5 feet in dimension — hanging in plain view in a garage attached to the club’s headquarters.
If it was in "plain view" as alleged, why didn't the Times' Fernanda Santos—or any other reporter or photographer than the one from the Daily News —notice it? Clearly, Sewell Chan had a much better view of the action from Manhattan.
But let's talk about the view for a moment, and about media accuracy. It is admittedly a small matter, but indicative of a greater pervading sloppiness.
Look at the picture again, and the descriptions. The Daily News and the Times puts the flag at "about" 3-by-5 foot in dimension, and the Post, inexplicably, determines the flag is 5-by-5 foot, proving that they failed rectangles and squares.
But before you laugh too much at the Post, make sure you include the Daily News and the Times, for they are far off the mark as well, as a little common sense would tell you.
Look back at that flag again.
Actually, look at the door.
When is the last time you saw an entry door that is 5-feet wide? This door is at most 36 inches wide, and many older buildings have rear garage doors commonly just 2'8" in width.
The flag, it would seem, is roughly half the size of that which the media claimed. This isn't malice, of course, just carelessness over the details.
The same sort of carelessness, however, gives us stories of brutal massacres that didn't happen. It gives us bullets that were never fired or never made. All of these stories are equally untrue because of reporters wanting to rush stories to print without getting the details right.
Speed to press will never save the print media. Bloggers will always be faster. The media must be more accurate, more diligent, and more credible. To date, they show little sign of learning this lesson.
Update 15:29 | Matthew Sheffield. This poor attention to detail is sadly far too common in the MSM. The No Looking Backwards blog catches the New York Times is a similar error: mistakenly stating that GOP candidate Fred Thompson ignored his supporters when video evidence shows the contrary.

October 31, 2007 - 14:47 ET by 19thatguy79you don't expect reporters to know such ignoble facts as common construction knowledge, do you? those silly details are left for the peons, whom they have no contact with, nor want to... I do find it hysterical that they would take such gross exaggerations as fact.

October 31, 2007 - 15:56 ET by KeithI'm beginning to think that more of you are racist than has been alleged! To see you clinging to the SIZE OF THE FLAG for your "mitigating" factors, is pathetic! WTF difference does it make whether the d*mned flag was 3 by 5 or 5 by 5????? It's a BIG ASSED SLAVE TRADE HONORING FLAG!!!! And it's in NEW FRIGGIN YORK so you can't even HIDE behind the racist canard of "it's about SOUTHERN pride"!!! No, it's about whites who have NEVER repudiated their barbarism! Bigots who seek out others who privily have the same negative feelings about other races, who express their hatred by hanging flags for each other to see! Sort of a wink and a nod to the Good ole days, you know, like "TRENT "things would've been better under segregation" LOTT? There is NO JUSTIFICATION for a racist symbol to be flying ANYWHERE near where a VICE PRESIDENT of the U.S.A is vacationing! Before this man travels the secret service climbs up in the orifices' of everyone and every place he is likely to come in contact with. They view EVERY PLACE within RIFLE SHOT for line of sight capablities and they CERTAINLY checked out that garage. Does it mean that Cheney saw it, personally? I don't know. But it stands to reason that if a reporter who was DENIED ACCESS could see it, it's pretty STUPID to believe that someone actually let inside, wouldn't. But you people have actually NEVER SEEN racism that didn't end in someone hanging from a rope, huh? This must be the racist denial blog, perhaps you should all read that new study which shows how cracked most of your society really is!

November 1, 2007 - 02:46 ET by KeithBut that has nothing to do with this discussion for now, please stay "on topic". I DO know more about virtually everything than you do, a 187 I.Q. will do that for you. Remember in the late seventies when the idea that I.Q. tests were little more than "aptitude" tests first reared it's head? Testing what the subject had in fact learned and having no bearing on his "potential" for learning? Remember how that article said that you'd have to actually be able to discern what a person in fact "knew" before you could assess his potential for knowledge? Meaning that you'd have to teach him something and see how well or quickly, he learned it.Well, that all got started because of a lawsuit that my parents hit the board of ed with where I grew up. I was suspended for refusing to do quadratic equations the way the school taught them. Their method took three blackboards to finish, mine took half of one. I was chastised, bullied by teachers threatened by my intellect and then I was expelled. Well, my parents didn't like that. The lead PHD who served as an "expert" in my case, used to substantiate the efficacy of my approach, simply relfected on some things I told him and wrote that paper you heard of. I was, I think...twelve. So even though I am the one who proved that I.Q. tests don't measure "potential" they measure "aptitude", that said, 187 is a whole lotta "aptitude"! Fourteen maybe fifteen people have been tested higher. Real tests not that Mensa junk. Not because higher intellects don't exist, they do! I used to know some of them. But because once you get north of 190 you threaten the ability of the "tester" to measure you. As I said before, it isn't arrogance if it's true. That only of course concerns "worldly" knowledge. The things of the spirit of God have to be spiritually discerned and for that you need His spirit. My knowledge, while great among men, is nothing in the big picture, as is man's total accumulated knowledge. Hope that's humble enough for you.

November 1, 2007 - 02:47 ET by KeithAbout how the secret service works. Or WHAT they look for. First they run a check on EVERYONE that works there or that the Veep might reasonably come in contact with. This is a lengthy process because they might have to talk to the neighbors of a person who'll be there. Then they do a "site check, which should be self explanatory. If for instance you worked in an office that the Veep was visiting and someone had some "God hates Fags" literature hanging around. That would be the SIGN of some possible extremist activity which would be EXHAUSTIVELY looked into before the Veep would set foot in that place! Such literature would be profiled in much the same way as the flag SHOULD have been, it literally would raise a "red flag" no pun intended. If it was missed on the first swipe a NEW round of background checks would begin all from one flier. I posted on this blog a seemingly arrongant statement that you disagreed with. But it isn't "arrogant" if it's true. And the fact that you DON'T know what would or would not raise a red flag with the secret service speaks volumes about the job you'd do protecting someone. Think about it for half a second before the need to call someone a "race baiter" overtakes you. You're a secret service agent assigned with doing the recon. You go to a place and see a flag which stands for slavery, murder, lynching and "southern pride". And your dumb behind is standing in NEW YORK. See, using you as an example is wrong because you're too dumb. But suppose you were say, ME and NOT dumb, you'd know that EXTREMISTS on the RIGHT and the LEFT have something in common! They both HATE the GOVERNMENT. Alfred Murrow building anyone? Right wing extremists dying on the mountain in Montana, anyone? If anything, the secret service agent that either saw the flag and said nothing or worse DIDN'T SEE IT, should be FIRED!
All of that said, I think that THIS should end the discussion...
"Cheney spokeswoman Lee Anne McBride said Cheney did not know anything about the controversy.
"The VP did not see the flag and neither did anyone on staff," said McBride."
End of story. If Cheney, through his staff, says that he didn't see it, that's good enough for me! He's straight shooter and if the confederate flag were the triviality to him that it is to some of you, he'd say so. His answer shows that he understands the heinous nature of this flag and I'd say, "Nuff said". Now all that remains IS TO FIRE THE IDIOT WHO'S RUNNING POINT FOR THE VEEP. Cheney's in danger with idiots like this looking after him because liberals are cracked!
Sorry, Keith, baby, but you're wrong again
November 1, 2007 - 10:27 ET by RJWhy do you assume they didn't question whoever hung that flag? As much as your overwrought mind would like to believe it, a confederate flag on a garage door is not something, in and of itself, that needs to be reported to the VP. No, you're really demanding that the Secret Service become the PC Police.
Keith, I'd still like you to answer my question from another post:
Isn't it an interesting conundrum that, given your constant flow of insulting invective toward posters on this board, you are treated relatively well? A (self-proclaimed) black man bitching about the treatment of blacks even as he's given better treatment than his behavior deserves?
Keith
November 1, 2007 - 10:43 ET by bassndudeThat post is just plain stupid. The VP dosent accompany the secret service to establish security. And they dont concern themselves with such trivial matters, nor do they try to infringe on the freedoms of others, nor do they dictate the decor of an establishment. And neither does the VP. And I doubt the VP spent much time, if any, in the back of a garage. Boy, your long on mouth and short on brains. You still have a lot to learn.

October 31, 2007 - 19:42 ET by KeithAnother stupid racist heard from! Do you know me?Actually, if I told you who I was you WOULD know me! You've seen me in movies and t.v shows for the past 25yrs. Every word I wrote is the unrefutable truth which is why you resort to ad hominem attacks. What a racist statement to say "no wonder 70% of black kids have no father in the home, as I'm sure the mothers kick
your dumb a**es out the door."
I mean, you COULD keep quiet and no one would know what a racist piece of crap you are but nooooo you gotta open your stupid mouth and PROVE IT. For your information doofus, it is BECAUSE OF WHITEY that 70% of black kids have "no fathers in the home". Actually that's 70% BORN OUT OF WEDLOCK, stupid. That has no bearing at all on who's "in the home". Two different things. But WHY are they born out of wedlock. To a racist piece of crap like you, it's because "they're dumb a**es", right? That shows how little you know about the world around you. To wit: Whites set up a racist society that enslaved black people. They separated them from their families and took their languages away by killing anyone who spoke something other than english. They cemented their barbarism into the culture through a variety of means. They used academia, much like the Nazis did, to "de-humanize" their victims, studies abounded showing the natural "inferiority" of the negro. These same "studies" btw were also used to limit the immigration of dark skinned WHITE europeans, specifically the Italians in the 1930's but I digresss. They also used the "psychiatric fields" to show why the negro was inferior and must "for his own protection" be dominated. When decent god fearing white people revolted things began to change. After the slaves were freed, they were hunted by the Democrat started KKK. My father was a war hero who was one of the ones to liberate some of the concentration camps in Nazi Germany, this hero fought in a SEGREGATED UNIT. They were not allowed in "town" on the same nights as their white counterparts even though, as my dad would say, "We were all screwin the same whores", which they paid for with chocalte and nylon stockings! THe society at large was as segregated as the Army and just as prejudiced. This made decent employment hard to come by and posed a problem for the majority similar to that posed by illegal immigration. Namely, if we don't let these people WORK they're either going to become criminals OR be on "the dole". Either way, it's a detriment to the society at large! But RATHER than change society, with initiatives like the one the school just put in place that you all balked at. Something where people leard DEFINITIVELY that the way they USED TO THINK was WRONG. Period. But that didn't happen, instead the racists decided that changing society's "heart and mind" was going to be a long term deal. So they set up a "project" and that's exactly what they called the "affordable housing" they provided intstead of changing society so blacks could AFFORD TO LIVE WHERE THEY CHOSE. They figured they'd put the poor blacks on "the dole", throw them a bone, if you will. This would delay any major "makeovers" of the society at large. This "dole" was called "relief" when it was helping Whites but was called "welfare" once the beneficiaries became black. Much like whites were "Foraging for food" during Katrina but the blacks were "looting". One of the stipulations for receiving this "welfare" was that THERE COULDN'T BE A MAN PRESENT IN THE HOME! Did you know that my racist friend? Over the years this set up all sorts of psychological blowback. At least that's what the white folk tell us when some chick blows away her abusive husband! The relationship between black women and black men became strained. When society DID open up the first "break throughs" often went to BLACK WOMEN, since they were seen as "less threatening" AND had the benefit of checking off TWO BOXES on the equal employment forms. Black AND a WOMAN! This has lead to black women seeing black men in a negative light and further strained their relationship once WHITE WOMEN found out where "IT" grows good at, namely the BLACK MAN! Even you CKC1227 who obviously are not that bright, I mean, do you represent all WHITE MALES? Or do you speak for yourself? It takes a pretty dumb person to read a post on a blog and think that the author "represented" all of ANYBODY! Especially, since I made no such claim. But even one was "challenged" as you, should be able to see, that having the GOVERNMENT MANDATE that NO FATHER BE PRESENT in the home or you can't have the GOVERNMENT CHEESE, sounds like a prescription for disaster! These are FACTS pally! Did they affect "every" black family? No! Were there many who ROSE ABOVE their station and succeeded in spite of your predecessors villainy? Of Course. They didn't even affect MY FAMILY! My father was a postal worker and my mother was a teacher, they remained married and middle class until my mothers death in 04. I, unlike many of my hue, lived out the American DREAM! Because of a ridiculously high I.Q, I was invited to the best schools and had a well rounded "diverse" education beginning in Kindergarten! But I am certainly the EXCEPTION not the rule. Somewhere along the way I decided I didn't want to be an Industrial Chemist and had no penchant for weapons systems manufacture and I discovered the world of film making. I made my first film with Tom Cruise in 1983 and have been in about twenty or so movies and close to one hundred T.V. shows since then. I was a single parent for most of that time, until my daughter reached eighteen and wanted to go live with her mom for a while. She came back. Mom's craaaazY, LOL. I own a production company in Los Angeles and am currently hoping to ride out the writers strike by acting in a few already set up projects. There. I just thought that if you were going to racially insult me, you should at least know who you're talking about. I represent me. But the things that I say are unrefutable, for they are simply historical, let them change your life.
P.S.
Although there will be idiots who wish to construe what I said as "excuse making" or whatever, I am in NO WAY excusing the BAD BEHAVIOR of MANY in the black race. Having someone's foot on your neck is no excuse for "laying down", it's a sign that you need to "fight harder"! But let's not act as if THERE WERE NO FOOT ON SAID NECK. When I speak to groups of high school students in my capacity as an actor, that's exactly what I tell them. I point out how we, "have not overcome" all that much. I let them hear tapes where the CEO's of multinational corporations were CAUGHT planning to eliminate people of color from their upper ranks . They listen as people actively plot to limit the future of people with MBA's simply because of the color of their skin. And I point out that the white race has CHANGED A LOT ( thank you Jesus) but there are so manyof them that a relative few NUTBAGS still pose a serious problem! Much like if only 10% of Muslims are terrorists, when you're talking about a BILLION PEOPLE that's a whole lotta terrorists! And because old attitudes die hard, I tell them that it would "behoove" them to take advantage of all the education this counry has to offer, because they're going to need it, just to get "half" as far. I don't make excuses and I don't accept handouts, but I do speak the truth.

Have not all of these things been done to the black race? Aren't there a bunch of white conservatives who act like there's been a level playing field since 1492? I mean, JEEZ, do you really think that 4OO years of bondage and persecution can CONCEIVABLY be rectified in 43 YEARS! The civil rights act represented "freedom" for blacks, strange that you don't see that. Do you really believe that the "problems" of the black race that took 400 years to create, can be eradicated in 40? If so, this would be the first of it's kind wouldn't it? A problem whose solution is quicker than the time it took to create the problem itself! Funny how you don't place such burden on the white race and rail against those who do! I believe that the attempt by the college to "indoctrinate" folks into what is or is not racism was doing just that! It said, "Wake up White people, no more lazing around waiting for your "hearts and minds" to change at their glacier like pace." But a lot of folk around here, didn't like that approach. Keith, don't forget about what the "war on drugs" does
November 1, 2007 - 05:08 ET by BlindSightto destabilize inner cities and to corrupt the police. The Prohibition did the same thing; thank God we we smart enough to undo that.
The war on drugs effectively makes criminals of all of the suppliers of what upper and middle class consumers want, while leaving most of the consumers off the hook. Those who supply have an highly valuable and easily moved product that cannot be defended except through violence (or threats of it). This destabilizes inner cities, and the war "against" it just puts greater arbitrary power in the hands of police and prosecutors, frequently corrupts them as well, and shifts more and more power to the feds at the cost of local authority. It is of course also corrupting and poisoning our relationship with many other countries.
Now I am no fan of drugs, but it is just not the job of government to save us from ourselves and when it tries, the cure us clearly much worse than the disease.
I imagine that you're aware that cops across the country are starting to argue for legalization, and that Reason mag and Cato have a fair amount of material on this.

You can call us here deniers - but you will need to come up with FACTS to support your acusations, if you are capable. Seems you are the one denying that the demolibs, who you admire, are the ones holding you back, what with their non-solutions and inuendo. Bur it was a good try.

October 31, 2007 - 22:04 ET by KeithDude, if you think I admire the Dems then you didn't read the post where I conclusively proved that they are the children of Satan. I was explaining how nice looking, intelligent, "articulate" people like Barack Obama, could vote to KILL BABIES THAT SURVIVE ABORTIONS. I'm the one who taught this blog that Jesus said that there were two divergent "strains" of humanity. A group placed here by God and a group placed here BY SATAN. I illustrated this by laboriously printing Matt 13:24-30, with the subsequent explanation of the parable of the wheat and the tares, here...Matt 13:36-42.
I know more about the Liberals and "what moves inside of them" than any of you. Not only spiritually which the above referenced scripture was pointing out, but also "naturally" having been at some of their meetings. Meetings where DemoNcrats, Atheists and members of G.L.A.D and another homosexual group that I cant' remember, were discussing the ERADICATION OF PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF CHRISTIANITY on Santa Monic Blvd. The meeting took place in the "game room" of an apartment building in Beverly Hills where I lived in 1995 or so. So NO I don't "admire" any dems. Sry.

October 31, 2007 - 14:50 ET by Col SmokeI have it, on good authority, that Johnnie Edwards was born in a state that flies the Confederate flag on the statehouse (public property) grounds. Furthermore, Hitlery Clinton's husband was governor, for multiple terms, of a state where the vast majority of white, male citizens decorate their motor vehicles with said emblem.
Where is the media outrage over these proven facts?!?!
Jeez man
October 31, 2007 - 22:08 ET by KeithLook I can't STAND John Edwards. I think he's probably a "larry craig" and frankly , his oily smooth manner disgusts me! So DON'T YOU EVER put me in the position of having to "defend" that spineless piece of feculent waste again, okay? That said, it is a FAR CRY from being BORN in a FRIGGIN STATE which flies an objectionable flag, to FREQUENTING and individual establishment of your own volition, which flies that same flag. You weren't being addressed, Keith
October 31, 2007 - 22:35 ET by RJThe poster was responding to the blog at the top of the thread, but you nevertheless attacked him with an aggressive and inappropriate tone.
You're always whining about blacks being mistreated, but, frankly, given your constantly crude behavior you're being treated pretty well for the most part. You're being given a latitude you probably don't deserve, and why would that be? It's likely because you claim to be black.
Now, there's an interesting conumdrum, Keith.....a black man bitching about blacks being mistreated, even as he's treated better than his behavior deserves....

Nice to see New York is the Solid South
October 31, 2007 - 16:14 ET by Lame CherryThis must be a real brain buster for liberals in finding that New York is now part of redneck land lol.
Perhaps we will see the new Scarlet Clinton donning the drapes for ole dixie followed by Charles Rangel and Al Sharpton doing a stage act for the DNC's entertainment.
The biggest and bigot question in this is to ALL LIBERALS is if the UNITED STATES FLAG MEANS NOTHING AND CAN BE CRAPPED ON AND BURNT then what importance is there in the least for a Confederate flag which was only around for about 5 years????
Liberals say flags mean nothing...........and yet this one flag is supposed to mean "something".
Hope you had a great time Dick, but you got to be shaking your head at shooting them pen raised York birds. Try South Dakota again out at the ranch as those are real birds out there and what I will be dining on in little over an hour.

Look, Let's Start Over
October 31, 2007 - 16:33 ET by BourbeauI'm sure there's a story here if we just let the MSM work with it a bit more. You're being way too critical of them; it's not their fault they were sent to capture the 'next Cheney shooting victim' and all they could come up with was a bad Confedy flag. So let's give the MSM's a break. They tried mightily to fill the void, but failed. But remember when one fails, one learns (most of the time).
I will say this about
October 31, 2007 - 16:57 ET by Ruths husband BenI will say this about the Confederate Flag. It is a divisive symbol. To Southern white folk it is a symbol of rebellion against overwelming odds, to black Americans it is a symbol of oppression. And over the last forty years or so, there hasn't been much movement on those respective positions.
I am a Southern white folk. I was born and raised Southern. I am proud of my heritage, but not of the slavery in my heritage. I decided some years ago, that if the Confederate flag means pain to some and if my not flying it helps tone down the divide, then okay, no Confederate Flag for me.
My parents did not raise me to be a bigot, so it (for me) is not an issue of overcoming my prejudice, rather, it is my way of moving toward reconciliation, with the belief that one side has to budge. It may as well be me.
That being said, it was not Cheney flying that flag. It was Cheney just trying to have a vacation. The press is out of line to try to link him to this. It would be reasonable to address this with the management of the hunt club. It would also be reasonable to ask Cheney what he thought of that flag being there. But to suggest that Cheney endorsed that view based on it being somewhere he never was is ridiculous.

RHB, and one thing you can
October 31, 2007 - 17:25 ET by motherbeltRHB, and one thing you can count on with the confederate flag is that in any discussion it will bring out the worse of both sides, unfortunately.
That being said, it was not Cheney flying that flag. It was Cheney just trying to have a vacation.
You are dead right on that score. I guess the VP, before he goes anywhere, is expected to send in the troopers to inspect every bit of the place, to make sure there is nothing offensive anywhere. Even on the inside of the back door of the garage.
Since the Veep was in his motorcade, I'm guessing he didn't go into the garage, so he never saw it. But that won't stop them from trying to make a mountain out of this pimple.
Stonewall Cheney
October 31, 2007 - 17:49 ET by acumenI agree. As someone also born in the south riddled with white guilt I am disgusted with these rebel seperatists in that hotbed of the "deep south", Dutchess County New York.
I applaud the eagle-eyed journalist for exposing these obvious white racist friends of Stonewall Cheney that callously display this Confederate battle flag in their secret lair.
I can't imagine the degree of anguish this display must cause the "many" blacks that belong to this exclusive club located just a couple hours north of that "conservative" bastion of New York City.
I knew the left's favorite flag was all white but I never knew there was another flag that they detested more than the American flag. Bravo!!!
Dear Ben, Rarely have I
October 31, 2007 - 22:19 ET by KeithDear Ben,
Rarely have I read on this blog a post with such compassion, depth and insight. God Bless YOU. May the blessings of the most High Jesus Christ warm your every cold moment. You're right that Cheney didn't fly that flag. And you're RIGHT that the press was WRONG to link him to it. I'm an African American who's "savvy" enough to know that the vacationing Vice President of the free world might not know about something hanging in a garage of a place he is visiting. My earlier poing was that the flag had to be visible from a common area since that's the only areas in which the reporters were allowe. That said, A Vice Pres has, or SHOULD HAVE, a heckuva lot more on his mind that what's hanging in the garage. They should, however have ASKED HIM ABOUT IT. If he said, "Gee, I had no idea, sorry" I'd take him at his word because I think he's a pretty straight shooter. But then I'm one of the FEW "Cheney fans" around, who actually thought that HE would have made a better president that GB. Again, I have to commend you for your willingness to give up something that you hold dear, for the sake of comity. You are a rare individual. God bless.
Thanks Keith, and he does
