Jay Carney vs. Jay Carney: Attacked Bush's 2001 'Heartland Tour,' Defends Obama's 2011 Midwest Job-Creation Tour

By Alex Fitzsimmons | August 11, 2011 | 13:19

Alex Fitzsimmons's picture

Jay Carney, meet Jay Carney.

In 2001, the then-Time magazine reporter wrote a snarky piece criticizing President George W. Bush's month-long vacation that was billed as a "Home to the Heartland" tour. But almost exactly 10 years later Carney, now the Obama White House's press secretary, is defending President Barack Obama's Midwest job-creation tour and vacation at Martha's Vineyard.

"I don't think Americans out there would begrudge that notion that the President would spend some time with his family," claimed Carney at a recent press briefing.

But that's exactly what he, as a private citizen working for Time, did in 2001 with a Republican in the White House, even though the unemployment rate the month before Obama's vacation (9.1 percent) was almost double what it was the month before Bush's (4.6 percent.)

Referring to one stop in the tour where Bush assisted in building a trail at the Rocky Mountain National Park, Carney chided: "Bush didn't actually help build that trail so much as he posed for the cameras as he simulated the act of helping build the trail."

Fast forward to August 2011, when Carney complained "the air of cynicism is quite thick" in the briefing room after reporters questioned Obama's upcoming road trip, adding, "The idea that the President of the United States should not venture forth into the country is ridiculous."

Never mind that years earlier the former Time reporter lamented Bush's "cynical attempt" to shape public opinion with a cross-country bus tour.

Obama recently promised he "will not rest" until the jobs issue is solved – right before announcing his month-long vacation to Martha's Vineyard.

Tisk tisk, Mr. President. 2001 Jay Carney would not be pleased.

This twerpy little reject

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 08/11/2011 - 1:23pm.

This twerpy little reject from 'Happy Days' is actually more disgusting than Bagdad Bob Gibbs............and that's NOT a compliment.

I did hear the 'Obama will not rest until everyone who is looking for a job or wants a job' statement yesterday on the news while I was............WORKING!!! I almost threw my hammer at the radio!!! What unmitigated and total BS!!! This little tilley has either got to be totally vacant, or a complete robot, to even have the nerve to SAY something like that.................and that doesn't even address whoever actually came up with such a ludicrous statement.

It becomes more obvious daily this guy and the rest of the administration have not a clue as to how to lead, speak, protect,or care about what America is all about. They are all, a utter failure. This guy always bashes Bush during the majority of his own agenda answers to questions, put to him. The more he protects his bosss, the more he sounds/looks like a complete fool.

I can't believe the number of times some democrat gets up and does a 180 on something they said or wrote previously. All this proves to me is that they don't care what the issue is as long as they can slam the other guy.

Are you ready for a new website?

Submitted by pbthinker on Thu, 08/11/2011 - 2:09pm.

If Newsbusters gets into looking at how the press handled Bush and how they're handling Obama, they'd have to start a new website to put everything up. If you could afford all the bandwidth, you could also put up the difference in the vetting of the Republican vice-presidential candidate and the vetting of the Democrats presidential candidate.

Vote Republican - Then you'll only be called a racist one more time.

Submitted by ThisnThat on Thu, 08/11/2011 - 3:07pm.

He's speaking at the Holland, MI event. So far, he's blamed Bush; Europe; and Congress. "You deserve better". And then -- get this --- he followed up with "From the CEO down".

This evening, he's going to say "We need to tax that SOB CEO" at his two fundraising events in New York. Bet your mortgage on it.

And of course -- he just asked for more spending!!!**. After saying that we can't cut the Federal Government any more. Everybody's got to do their part! he says. "We learn this in Kindergarten -- being fair. One thing we can do right now -- is tax the oil companies and billionaires". This guy's toast. No one applauded him. Same ol', same ol'.

It's typical Liberal Speak

Words, context, definitions, they have no meaning other than what they might mean the moment a lib says them. Only after the fact, when questioned will he reveal the intent of what he was trying to say. It works when you have no firm established principles and each day is a clean slate with regard to the message being presented, Yesterday never happened and contributes nothing to today, and tomorrow will be whatever we say it is until we get there.

June 3, 2011

Dear President Obama,

Last week we remembered those lost in the service of the United States of America. Every year I spend one of those weekend days at an the Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show that takes place at Jones Beach. And every year, as I engage various frustrations of being a father, and a husband, I say I’m never doing this again. But I do it. I do it because it is one of the only ways I have to teach my family what risks, and competence, we have in the men and woman that serve in this nations military.

I also do it because, like you Mr. Obama, I failed to serve this nation in uniform. But unlike you, I have significant guilt and regret from that poor decision on my part. Life is not something one can pause and hit the rewind button on though. We must decide what to do in order to make a poor choice right and ensure a better future for our children. Provide money to charities that help the troops, advocate for civilian leadership that will not abuse that trust and lives of those service members, honor them through the passing days of freedom my family and I get to experience because they decided to give that up. In some cases forever by continuing their service to this nation as a name carved in granite or bronze to remind future generations that freedom is not free.

A few days from now will mark the 67th anniversary of D-Day. On that day those men who decided that Europe should be free decided to do something about it. They were led by brave leaders who knew that failure was not an option, they knew that to not meet evil with violence and death only meant that one day evil would find its way to their families and homesteads. So they acted with resolve. My Grandfather was one of these men in a B-24 over France on D-Day, and if the weather was better his bombing group could have saved a lot of allied lives. Because of that bad weather so many of those men had to hit beaches chock full of death and destruction.

But, even in the face of this certain death, they did not give up.

As I watched those pilots fly those planes and marveled at the Golden Knights parachute team hit their marks on the beach I know that the sacrifice of those men so many years ago did not occur in vein. Their heroism, and desire to sacrifice, for something bigger than themselves, is alive and well in this nation, and instead of squandering it, we should foster it. I also witnessed something else, thirty or so new recruits into the United States Air Force, raise their hands to take an oath. I think it is an oath that you took Mr. Obama, but these men, and women, may be called upon to keep it with their lives.

They deserve better civilian leadership than what we have given them and on November 6, 2012 we will be doing our part to bring that about.

Respectfully,

Joe Doakes

Weakness???

Submitted by robbied on Thu, 08/11/2011 - 3:57pm.

The funniest part about the 2001 article is that Carneys actually says "The President's (Bush) most glaring weakness is the public's perception that he is pro-business and anti-environment."

To bad our current president can't be pro-business...

Jay Carney

Submitted by packman on Thu, 08/11/2011 - 5:44pm.

is Roberts Gibbs spawn....this little whining marshmallow weenie is a poster boy for everything that's wrong with this country right now. He is truly representative of how far out of touch the entire white house is with everyday America. Like many others of his ilk - Sharpton, Olberman, Zakaria, Matthews, Maddow, et al, I simply cannot stomach watching them or hearing them speak, preferring instead to read the text of what has been said by them, or to read others reports of their rants. Well at least its not as bad as watching the liar-in-chief himself, which tends to bring on actual fits of nausea.
