Dennis Miller Chides Newsweek Magazine for Ranking US 11th Best Country in World

Appearing on the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" last night, comedian Dennis Miller blasted the beleaguered Newsweek magazine for ranking the United States the 11th "best country in the world," behind left-of-center nations like Finland, Switzerland, and Sweden.

Performing on Veterans Day for an audience comprised of American military personnel, Miller showed his patriotic stripes: "Hey, Newsweek, go fjord yourself okay. Finland is the s--- little plastic village you set up under the Christmas tree every year."

An impassioned Miller quipped: "The best thing about living in Finland is they don't get Newsweek magazine."

The August cover story ranked Finland the best country in the world, followed by Switzerland and Sweden.

As NewsBusters editor-at-large Brent Baker noted at the time, Newsweek's piece blamed former President George W. Bush for a series of "serious blows" and "policy debacles" that contributed to America's lackluster ranking.

I love her myself. Great laugh, too.

I can't believe she's in her mid-forties.

Sad

Submitted by Gat New York on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 5:52pm.

What is sad for me is that many years ago I worked for Newsweek when it was a legitimate and respoected news weekly. It has turned into a joke. It is the print verson of Keith Olbermann and any one still writing for it should walk around with a bag over their head.

Now that the Daily Beast and Tina Brown take over let's see how much loonier she can make it.

The magazine has been on a financial  and credibility respirator for years. They should just put it out of its misery and kill it.

If the U.S. is the 11th best country in the world, then why do we have a major illegal immigration problem the ones above us do not?

That, and also because they

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 11:21pm.

That, and also because they are a helluva lot smaller than we are, both in size and population. And if I'm not mistaken, they have a fairly homogeneous population, so they aren't being pulled in so many cultural directions. And they probably have some kind of a balance going between their industry, trade, education, and other important issues on a primary level.

And we can go back to Teddy Kennedy if we're looking for reasons why OUR inflow of immigrants, and the balance there with regards to race and cultures, changed so drastically in the last 30-40 years......................and look where it's taken us!!!!

Actually Sweden has a serious immigration problem.  You do not hear much about it because Denmark and European countries to the south have problems that are even worse.

Oh, for Pete's sake. Is there any post on bias anywhere in the media that someone here won't write "Who cares what these people say? They're irrelevant. And so on and so forth...". Obviously, WE CARE and YOU must care - why else would this site be here and why would you be on it? Grrrrrrrr.

Submitted by needle on Sat, 11/13/2010 - 10:16am.

Very good point.

The Liberal Media has ruined political discourse in this country, with its bias, its PC cr*p and intimidation, and its Saul Alinsky tactics; and it is trying to ruin democracy itself.   The Left is interested in democracy only to the extent that it facilitates THEIR agenda.

You are right, I do care.

What a metaphor for Newsweek!

Submitted by metaphorsbwithu on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 6:34pm.

Newsweek has been "finnished" for ages so this is no big surprise.

Aren't the populations of all those countries known as big drinkers?

I guess boredom and depression now rank high on the list of things that make for a happy environment for libs.

Sacrifice

Submitted by Ozconservative on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 10:04pm.

Maybe Newsweek should have mentioned also the reason 1, 2 and 3 enjoy the lifestyle they have is because 11 and 14 sacrificed hundreds of thousands of young lives in kicking 12s ass and keeping 51 from invading.

And don't sigh too much, even if you tallied up a 'gotcha'.....................and don't try and drop the country down a notch because I made a math error................I'm not in any position to have any impact on the status of this great country, other than being responsible, dependable, and hard working...............which , these days, is almost a mathematical minority , percentage wise.

I have been to all three:

Submitted by mostlymoderate on Sat, 11/13/2010 - 2:55am.

I have been to all three: Finland, Switzerland and Sweden and they really ARE nice countries.  However, it's because they held off mass-immigration from third-world nations much longer than the U.S.A.  Don't worry, they will catch up.  Whereas the United States has it's 20+ million uneducated, unskilled illegal aliens usurping the tax-payer's money-pool, these Scandinavian countries are not much impacted yet.  It is starting to change though.  More "progressive" organizations are pushing for Islamization, immigration from African countries, the middle east etc.  Why?  Because those countries are too white and that is racist.  It was decided a long time ago that the entire World should be one gigantic melting pot of multi-culturalism.  Anything else is wrong and racist.

Before 1964, the United States was much like Finland is today.  Then Ted Kennedy et. Al decided it was time to screw our wonderful nation up.

Race is the Reason for the Picks.

Submitted by Avitar on Sat, 11/13/2010 - 6:07am.

The cold and  the moutains have slowed genetic mixing in these countries and they get higher test results with less education.  It is unpleasant but if you take as your model of civilizattion the northern countties and assume the model to be static then Hitler was right.

Society and civilization are not static and any country on earth could overtake Finland by 2050 or earlier.
