Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN), on ABC’s This Week, identified long-time segregationist George Wallace, the Democratic governor of Alabama and twice a Democratic candidate for president, as a Republican: “We do have the worst Republican nominee since George Wallace.”

Wallace was never a Republican and never won the nomination of either major party, though he was the candidate in 1968 of the American Independent Party. He ran in the Democratic presidential primaries in both 1972 and 1976.
