Karl Rove

Recruited By Mika, HuffPo's Stein Tries But Fails To Debunk Devastating Obama-Celebrity Ad

By Mark Finkelstein | April 27, 2012 | 08:28

If you haven't seen the hilariously effective ad by Karl Rove's American Crossroads group that portrays Barack Obama as a celebrity president with a failed economic record, check it out in the video clip.

Mika Brzezinksi was clearly peeved at how well the ad was playing even with her liberal-dominated panel.  After Obama fan Donny Deutsch, and no-conservative-he John Heilemann praised the ad, a Mika at wit's end sought to recruit HuffPo's Sam Stein to help her out.  "Can you debunk some of the things in the ad?", she entreated.  Stumbled Stein: "ah-h-h-h-h, sure, I guess."  After offering a paltry defense that Joe Scarborough demolished, Stein was reduced to saying that Mika had invited him to try to debunk the ad, and that "I'm trying my best!"  View the amusing video after the break.

Frank Rich Whines About 'Sugar Daddies: The Old, White, Rich Men Who Are Buying This Election'

By Noel Sheppard | April 23, 2012 | 08:37

Sunday must have been reverse racism day for past and current New York Times employees.

After David Brooks and Helene Cooper expressed concern about there possibly being two "white guys" on the Republican presidential ticket, former Times columnist turned New York magazine flame thrower Frank Rick wrote "Sugar Daddies: The Old, White, Rich Men Who Are Buying This Election":

By Noel Sheppard | March 06, 2012 | 01:06

As NewsBusters reported Sunday, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich scolded Meet the Press host David Gregory for beginning their interview with a question about the Rush Limbaugh-Sandra Fluke controversy.

On Fox News's On the Record Monday, Karl Rove said of this exchange, "God bless Speaker Gingrich for taking David Gregory out behind the barn and giving him a whooping" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Norman Lear Attacks Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Karl Rove and GOP Presidential Candidates

By Noel Sheppard | December 13, 2011 | 19:51

Television's Norman Lear, in a speech celebrating the 30th anniversary of his far-left organization People for the American Way, called James Dobson, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and Karl Rove hate-mongers.

In his December 5 address published at the Huffington Post Tuesday, he also accused the Republican candidates for president of having a "holier-than-thou sanctity" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Politico's Top Stories Suggest Site's Liberal Tilt

By Mark Finkelstein | October 10, 2011 | 08:04

Politico's "Daily Digest" is an email the blog blasts out in the morning, touting the day's top stories.  As a subscriber, this NewsBuster was struck by the left-friendly lean of five out this morning's six featured stories.

To be sure, "Post-recession income falls" is not good for President Obama, reporting as it does that Americans' incomes have fallen faster during his presidency than they did even in the depths of the recession.  But every other story would surely be welcome at the White House.  Here are the stories, in the order they appear in the email:

MSNBC's Schultz Defends Bachmann from 'Right-Wing Hit Job,' 'Maybe' a 'War on Women' in GOP

By Brad Wilmouth | July 21, 2011 | 07:34

On Wednesday’s The Ed Show, MSNBC host Ed Schultz came to Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann’s defense against what he called a "right-wing hit job" from the Daily Caller in the form of an article alleging that the Minnesota Congresswoman suffers from severe migraines. But one may question whether Schultz waded into taking a side in the controversy as an excuse for bolstering his case that the Republican Party is anti-woman, or just to attack the GOP establishment and other Republicans whom Schultz may perceive as being more able to defeat President Obama as he lambasted presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty and FNC contributor Karl Rove.

But whatever his motives, Schultz had words that sounded more gracious than one typically expects to hear him speak of a Republican. As he neared the end of the segment, Schultz addressed Bachmann directly:

Karl Rove Asks Juan Williams: How Can an Obscure Guy Who Did Diddly Squat in the Senate Become President?

By Noel Sheppard | June 25, 2011 | 16:32

Karl Rove and Juan Williams had quite a lively debate Friday evening about politics, the economy, and who can beat Barack Obama in 2012.

With Williams acting as substitute host on "The O'Reilly Factor," guest Rove asked the question that has been plaguing conservatives for approaching three years - "How can an obscure United States senator from Illinois who had done diddly squat in the senate become the nominee of the Democratic Party and the President of the United States?" Liberal Policies Lose on a Day America Wins

By Rusty Weiss | May 03, 2011 | 05:41

Sunday was an historic day for America, an historic victory in the War on Terror - Usama Bin Laden, the man who had ordered the death of over 3,000 Americans on 9/11, had finally been  killed.   It was also an historic revelation that, conducting the war according to far-left liberal policies would have prevented this day from ever happening.

NCIS: Los Angeles Sneers That Murderous Venezuelan Villain Is the 'Karl Rove of Caracas'

By Scott Whitlock | March 24, 2011 | 17:20

CBS's primetime drama NCIS: L.A. on Tuesday took a gratuitous swipe at a prominent conservative strategist, referring to a murderous Venezuelan villain as "the Karl Rove of Caracas." As if to emphasize the point, the jab was repeated later in the episode.

The March 22 show, titled, "Enemy Within," revolved around a Venezuelan politician who was supposedly pro-American, but turned out to be opposed to the U.S. During a visit to Los Angeles, "Gutierrez" is targeted for assassination. A Navy lieutenant explained, "Look, there's a hard-line faction in the country led by a guy named Miguel Cortez. He's like the Karl Rove of Caracas."

Later in the episode, the insult is needlessly repeated. "Special Agent Callen," played by Chris O'Donnell parroted, "Cortez is the leader of the hard-line faction in Venezuela." Another agent, played by Daniela Ruah, reminded, "Yeah, Chambers said he's the Karl Rove of Caracas."

National Review's Salam Schools Andrew Sullivan on Conservatism, Palin and the Tea Party

By Noel Sheppard | January 16, 2011 | 18:48

National Review's Reihan Salam this weekend demonstrated exactly why it should be required that there be at least one conservative present during televised political discussions.

Appearing on the syndicated "Chris Matthews Show," Salam had a spirited and at times contentious debate with the Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan about conservatism, Sarah Palin, and the Tea Party (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Matthews: Has GOP Sounded Dog Whistle Declaring Open Season On Sarah Palin?

By Noel Sheppard | December 07, 2010 | 00:20

It appears Republicans need to be read their conservative Miranda rights: anything negative you say about Sarah Palin can and will be used against her by the liberal media.

Such was made infinitely clear on Monday's "Hardball" when the host first teased, "Has someone sounded the dog whistle," and later opened a segment, "Are Republicans putting out the word that it's time to stop Sarah Palin?" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Kurtz: Rove's Fundraising For GOP 'a Lot Worse' Than Olbermann Donation

By Matthew Balan | November 07, 2010 | 19:54

On Friday's Situation Room, The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz stated that the fundraising activities of Fox News contributors Dick Morris and Karl Rove somehow rose to a worse level than Keith Olbermann's maximum individual donations to three Democrats, which violated MSNBC's policy. Kurtz also suggested that both networks "tighten up on this stuff or just tear up the rule book."

Correspondent Mary Snow covered Olbermann's suspension during a report just before the bottom of the 6 pm Eastern hour. Snow began by noting how the anchor "has become a star power at MSNBC for voicing his liberal opinions, but Keith Olbermann is now sidelined for financially supporting three Democratic candidates. Records show he contributed $2,400 each to Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway, and two members of Congress from Arizona: Gabrielle Giffords and Raul Grijalva." She continued that "Congressman Grijalva was a guest on Olbermann's show October 28, the same day Olbermann donated to his campaign."

Later, after recounting how the MSNBC personality has been "a vocal critic of Fox and its parent company, News Corp, for donating $1 million to the Republican Governors Association," the CNN correspondent played her clip from Kurtz, who gave his take on the Olbermann suspension and on the Fox News contributors' fundraising:

Karl Rove Goes Toe-to-Toe with Matt Lauer on Today

By Geoffrey Dickens | November 05, 2010 | 12:30

When NBC's Matt Lauer threw out the tired, overused, standard media line, on Friday's Today show, that the public is tired of all the "vitriol" and wants the Republicans to just work with Barack Obama and the Democrats, his guest, Karl Rove, threw Obama's words back in Lauer's face as he pointed out it was the President who called Republicans "enemies." When Lauer asked if the GOP could advance their agenda "without personally attacking Obama" Rove responded that Republicans could work with the President but it was he, who needed to tamp down the rhetoric, as the former George W. Bush senior adviser reminded Lauer: "It was the President out there saying to a Latino radio station, 'We need to punish our enemies and reward our friends.'"

The following is the relevant exchange as it was aired on the November 5 Today show:

Palin and Van Susteren Slam Politico's Newest Sarah Hit Piece

By Noel Sheppard | November 01, 2010 | 11:50

Politico published another Sarah Palin hit piece on Sunday evening, and much like the last one, authors Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei couldn't find one disparaging source to actually go on the record with his or her negative opinions.

Grabbing the article hot off the presses, Fox News's Greta Van Susteren and her guest Palin trashed "all these brave" faceless people as well as the so-called journalists willing to write hit pieces without any named sources (video follows with transcript and commentary, h/t Mediaite):

Lib Talker Malloy: Karl Rove 'Traitorous Rat Bastard' Who 'Makes Deals with Demonic Forces'

By Ken Shepherd | October 14, 2010 | 15:34

The liberal media have had a field day with conservative Delaware Republican Senate nominee Christine O'Donnell saying years ago on "Politically Incorrect" that she had dabbled in witchcraft in high school.

But don't hold your breath for the mainstream media to call out leftist radio host Mike Malloy for insisting without any proof whatsoever that Karl Rove "makes deals with... demonic forces on this planet" and would, if he could, "make a deal with Osama bin Laden to attack the United States again" in order to "end Obama's presidency."

ABC Demands Karl Rove Respond to Baseless, Unproved Charge from Panicky Dems

By Scott Whitlock | October 12, 2010 | 14:49

George Stephanopoulos adopted the "guilty until proven innocent" style of questioning on Tuesday and pressed strategist Karl Rove to prove that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other groups aren't receiving foreign money– a charge there's no evidence for.

Stephanopoulos teased, "And dirty money? President Obama and Joe Biden accuse Karl Rove of trying to buy this year's election. Is foreign money really influencing elections?" In a previous segment, reporter Jake Tapper pointed out, "And so far, this strong charge is completely unproven. But the White House response to the chamber, prove it."

Yet, Stephanopoulos picked up the administration's talking points in an interview with Rove. The host played a clip of Joe Biden demanding that the ex-Bush aide defend his group, American Crossroads against the foreign money charge. Stephanopoulos followed up: "Ready to take up the challenge?" segment, reporter Jake Tapper pointed out, "And so far, this strong charge is completely unproven. Olbermann: Christine O’Donnell ‘Lump of Dumb & Judgmental,’ Tea Partiers Pushing ‘Virulent, Uneducated Hatred’

By Brad Wilmouth | September 17, 2010 | 21:46

On Friday’s Countdown show on MSNBC, during the show’s regular "Worst Person in the World" segment, host Keith Olbermann referred to Delaware Republican Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell as a "lump of dumb and judgmental" as he introduced his slam of Republican strategist Jack Burkman and a clip of him being criticized by former New York Republican Senator Al D’Amato for comments Burkman made about African immigrants on the Fox Business Channel.

As he attacked Burkman, the MSNBC host smeared Tea Party activists generally as promoting "nonsensical, virulent, uneducated hatred." Olbermann: "For the second time in three days, a hardline GOP stalwart managed to get fed up with the nonsensical, virulent, uneducated hatred pushed by one of these flip Tea Party types, and he called BS on it. The first was Karl Rove wigging out over the lump of dumb and judgmental that is Christine O’Donnell."

Randi Rhodes Crudely Mocks Christine O'Donnell's Prim Sexuality: 'Hymen Check!'

By Tim Graham | September 16, 2010 | 23:17

Liberal talk radio host Randi Rhodes rejoiced on Wednesday over victorious Tea Party candidates Carl Palladino ("a seriously creepy, creepy guy") and Christine O'Donnell ("you've got the anti-masturbation paranoid creationist lawyer where we could pick up a seat"). But Rhodes decided to go scabrously nasty and personal against O'Donnell, complete with flagrant virginity mockery:

By the way, Christine O'Donnell. It comes to my attention, uh, Deb tells me that Christine O'Donnell is not married....she's an unmarried woman. Hymen check! [plays popping noise] She'd better be a virgin! Right? With all this vitriol about sex and sexual thoughts and lust and not masturbating and it's wrong and what am I doing in the room...

I know she had a boyfriend. I know she did because her then-boyfriend -- then campaign manager -- purchased her house when her house was in foreclosure for her! Uh, do you think he did it with lust in his heart?

After Delaware Race Called, Rove Continues To Rip O'Donnell

By Mark Finkelstein | September 14, 2010 | 22:47

"This is probably one of the few times we're going to disagree here."  -- Sean Hannity to Karl Rove regarding Christine O'Donnell.
I'll say. Even after Fox News called the Delaware GOP senatorial primary for Christine O'Donnell tonight, Karl Rove continued to rip the winner, questioning everything from O'Donnell's "rectitude" to her "character."   Concluded the pessimistic Rove: "this is not a race we're going to be able to win."

Sean defended O'Donnell staunchly, but was met with a litany of Roveian criticism of Christine, including these comments:

Revolving Door Spins as Peter Orszag Takes NYT Columnist Gig

By Lachlan Markay | September 03, 2010 | 17:06

The massive revolving door between the mainstream media and the Obama administration has spun once again, this time as former White House budget director Peter Orszag signs on as a New York Times op/ed columnist.

Orszag is the eighteenth individual (that we know of) to transition between the White House and the mainstream press. He will surely not be the last. That amazingly high number again underscores the ideological similarities between members of the Obama administration and members of the press.

The New York Times Co. broke the news in a press release today:

Olbermann Ties Stabbing to Ground Zero Mosque Opposition, GOP Strategy is 'Hate'

By Brad Wilmouth | August 27, 2010 | 14:32

On Thursday's Countdown show, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann tied together Republican opposition to same-sex marriage, the Ground Zero mosque, and illegal immigration, as he charged that "the Republican method" for electoral success is "hate." The MSNBC host opened the show: "The Republican method for winning elections is hate. Hate somebody. Anybody will do. We have seen it this year with immigrants and now, Muslims. And now, in our fifth story tonight: for the first time, we have a former head of the Republican party confirming that, yes, his party does it. They do it to win and did it in 2004 and 2006 against gay Americans. He said this even though he himself is no longer denying that he, too, is gay."

Without evidence, Olbermann also blamed the stabbing of New York City cab driver Ahmed Sharif on those who oppose construction of a mosque near Ground Zero. Although he later admitted that the mosque was not mentioned by the suspect, the MSNBC host suggested a link as he teased the show:

On Ground Zero Mosque, George Stephanopoulos Keeps Focus on Republicans: Will They 'Undercut' Obama's Outreach?

By Scott Whitlock | August 18, 2010 | 11:32

George Stephanopoulos on Wednesday again focused on GOP reaction to the Ground Zero mosque, challenging Karl Rove as to whether Republicans such as Newt Gingrich will "undercut the work" President Obama has been doing to reach out to moderate Muslims.

Stephanopoulos highlighted Republican officials "who worry that the kind of rhetoric we've been hearing from people like Newt Gingrich is going to undercut the work that President Bush did and President Obama has tried to do to reach out to the moderate Muslim world." [MP3 audio here.]

He quizzed Rove, "Are you worried about that?" At no time did Stephanopoulos discuss Obama's handling or the rightness of building so close to Ground Zero.

At one point, Rove retorted by bringing up the GMA host's past as a Democratic operative: "You were there, George. In every instance, did you have to go there and say, 'Mr. Clinton, you need to get involved in every single issue that's popping up on the radar scope?'"

Schultz Mocks Rove Radio Work, But Can't Pronounce 'Cousteau'

By Mark Finkelstein | August 09, 2010 | 22:45

From the Department Of People In Glass Houses . . .

Early in his MSNBC show this evening, Ed Schultz mocked Karl Rove's performance in filling in for Rush Limbaugh today.  In particular, Schultz slammed Rove for his brief problem in providing the show's call-in number.

But later in the show, Ed himself ran head-first into a rhetorical roadblock, stumbling badly when it came to pronouncing the most famous name in the world of ocean studies: Cousteau.

MSNBC’s Matthews Roots for Birther Candidate Taitz to ‘Bring Down’ California GOP, ‘Tie Her Up Like a Witch at the Stake'

By Brad Wilmouth | June 09, 2010 | 09:10

Appearing on the 10:00 p.m. edition of MSNBC’s Countdown show on Tuesday to discuss the day’s primary election results, Chris Matthews expressed his delight that Orly Taitz – a prominent member of the birther movement that pushes the bizarre theory that President Obama was not really born in America – won the Republican nomination for secretary of state in California, and expressed his hope that the fringe candidate would drag down the Republican ticket in the state. Matthews celebrated what he termed a "malignancy" within the Republican party as he openly rooted for Taitz to hurt the GOP:

Keith, we`ve got good news tonight. And that`s the probable nomination of Orly Taitz in California for secretary of state. This is a true malignancy on the Republican party. She will bring down the other two candidates for high office out there. She`ll probably bring down Carly Fiorina, and may well bring down Meg Whitman because she is unacceptable to any reasonable voter.

Matthews went on to advise that California Democrats "tie her up like a witch at the stake":

It is tribalist, it`s malignant, and I believe if I were a Democratic officeholder out there or had anything to do with the Democratic party with Jerry Brown`s campaign, I would tie her to them like a fencepost. I would tie her up, I should say, like a witch at the stake. This is a malignancy.

Matthews went on to reiterate that he thought that Taitz’s current success in California’s Republican party was "wonderful news":

Rove: W.H. Press Assoc. Credentialed 'Homeless' Reporter the Bush Administration Had to Feed Cheeseburgers

By Jeff Poor | June 07, 2010 | 17:50

What is going on within the White House Correspondents' Association?

While some can argue they allowed embattled former Hearst Newspapers' columnist Helen Thomas to hold a coveted position in the White House briefing room for far too long after she made some remarks to be considered anti-Semitic, there's some other bizarre stories surfacing. Former Bush administration Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove, now a Fox News contributor, detailed an account of what he called a "homeless" reporter credentialed by the WHCA while he was at the White House.

Rove appeared on Fox News Channel's June 7 "America Live" and explained what was going on within this division of the fourth estate. He explained it's very tough for the White House to restrict who has access to the White House briefing room.

Rove: Joe Klein's 'Man Love' For Obama Makes Chris Matthews' Tingles Pale By Comparison

By Noel Sheppard | June 03, 2010 | 01:18

Karl Rove on Wednesday said the "man love" Time's Joe Klein has for Barack Obama makes Chris Matthews' adoration of the President pale by comparison.

As Rove's radio interview with Sean Hannity began, the host told the former White House adviser, "You know, we now have guys like Joe Klein out there blaming George W. Bush for the oil spill."

Rove responded, "Joe Klein used to be a thoughtful person, and now he's just got a reflexive hatred of George Bush, and, and he makes, he makes the man love he has for Barack Obama, it makes Chris Matthews' man love for Obama pale in significance" (audio available here, partial transcript follows, h/t Weasel Zippers):

Karl Rove Forced To Defend Bush Immigration Policy - On Fox News?

By Noel Sheppard | May 07, 2010 | 10:36

If you listen to the Obama administration, Democrats, and the mainstream media, Fox News is just an echo chamber for Republican talking points as well as a proud defender of former President George W. Bush.

Fox fans counter that this is the only television network where liberals and conservatives regularly are allowed to voice their views while getting challenged by hosts and anchors.

Thursday's "O'Reilly Factor" was a perfect example of this premise.

The host's guest was Karl Rove, and the former Bush adviser was certainly NOT treated with kid gloves by the very contentious and argumentative host.

As you watch the following clip, try to imagine a member of the Obama administration being so forcefully grilled on any mainstream television station (video follows with transcript):

Karl Rove Details Grievances of CBS's '60 Minutes' In New Book

By Kyle Drennen | May 06, 2010 | 12:04

On April 13, I reported on CBS 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft complaining about the fact that Dick Cheney and Karl Rove have refused to appear on the program. I pointed to recent instances of 60 Minutes smearing both men as a possible cause of their unwillingness to be guests and found that one of those examples was referenced by Rove in his new book, Courage and Consequence.

On February 24, 2008, 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley did a story on a bizarre conspiracy theory in which an Alabama lawyer named Dana Jill Simpson accused Rove of engineering the political downfall and imprisonment of the state's former Democratic Governor Don Siegelman. In Chapter 34 of his book, entitled "Rove: The Myth," pages 506-507, Rove describes his reaction to Pelley airing the piece: "I was flabbergasted that Pelley had bought her [Simpson's] story. His producers had called me about Simpson the previous October. I told them I had never met the woman or worked with her in any campaign or capacity."

Rove went on to note: "It struck me as odd that five months later, Pelley did not call to say that 60 Minutes was going with the story and that he wanted to give me a chance to tell my version." Rove also explained his efforts to reach out to Pelley after the segment aired: "[I] stewed about it for several weeks before calling Pelley on March 31 to list all the ways I thought he had failed to exercise due diligence. While cordial, Pelley was unresponsive. So I followed up with a letter on April 2, summarizing my concerns....In a letter two weeks later, Pelley answered virtually none of my questions."

CBS's Kroft Whines Over Dick Cheney, Karl Rove Not Appearing on '60 Minutes'

By Kyle Drennen | April 13, 2010 | 16:15

While attending the Radio Television Digital News Association conference in Las Vegas on Monday, 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft spoke to a crowd of young journalists and claimed that his dream interview would be with Dick Cheney, but complained how the former vice president and Bush adviser Karl Rove simply "make hay" in criticizing 60 Minutes coverage, but would not go on the show.

If one looks at a recent history of 60 Minutes reporting, it's easy to see why Cheney and Rove would not be eager to appear on the CBS program. On the May 11, 2008 broadcast, correspondent Morley Safer conducted a fawning interview with left-wing actor Alec Baldwin and light-heartedly remarked: "Your eloquence, if that's the word, can get you into deep trouble....perhaps excessively eloquent, as in your description of Dick Cheney, who you said was a sociopath and a terrorist, and you later apologized by just calling him a 'lying, thieving, oil whore and a murderer of the US Constitution.'"
